Sable, Elias & Aric
Time of Day :: Morning
Season :: Summer
Weather :: Sunny day with clear Skies

It was mid-morning, a warm orange light still casting over the woods in a quiet greeting. For the desert child it was a wonderful new day to test the cool waters, to let himself be taken by the tide, to bask in the warm rays of the sun. Yet to his guardian, it was just the perfect day to finally take Aric out and learn to hunt.

Elias had grown increasingly worried about the young child and his capabilities. More than once he had found the boy making large burrows of holes into the sand, making mini sandstorms much like how the bottle had reacted before and of course, Aric injuring himself from this careless handling. Elias had tried to be supportive but most of all he tried to look out for the boy, watching his actions and ready to leap at him if there was imminent danger. Proudly, the young hunter was skilled and knowledgeable in many aspects of survival. May it be about knowing which plants were poisonous or not, to knowing how to wield a bow and stalk a prey from behind foliage. But of course --magic--was never something he had thought even existed. Of course there were stories of his youth of marvelous magicians and feats of glory---yet also destruction. And now it was right there in front of him, a young, cheerful boy who was suspending the sand around him, bright blue eyes in wonder of his own skill. For the most part Elias was quite terrified of this power, especially being possessed by a young, innocent child like the blonde. It seemed the thing he needed to do the most was try to save Aric from himself.

The two had started their hunt early, trekking towards the safer part of the Whi forest where Elias was used to hunting. Surprisingly, though Aric wanted to play in the beach more than hunt, he was very much interested in this trip. The blonde wore darker clothing for the hunt, a stark contrast to how his clothing was always bright and intense as he was. For a while, Aric was only to observe. The brunette whispered and told Aric of how they had to take slow, quiet steps --and to never, never break eye contact with their prey. With eager eyes and a smile, Aric listened to all of what his guardian had to say. Despite Aric often shouting in wonder and scaring off the animals, Elias had managed to successfully hunt a little fawn and two rabbits with his bow and arrow. The dust child, growing increasingly impatient and anxious had exclaimed that he wanted to try it out himself. Hesitantly, Elias had agreed. And somehow the morning passed with Aric successfully killing a rabbit as well. Somehow it unnerved the male with how natural it was to Aric.

"We should do this more often!~" the blonde sang in a proud tune, carrying the bag of rabbits from that morning. Elias looked over to the younger male, the bagged fawn along his back. "Yes, you did very well," he said very much like a proud father despite the hesitation he had about it earlier. "You're a natural at it ... now we have dinner for tonight and perhaps we can sell the pelts tomorrow morning." he mused to himself. The two males were quickly making their way out of the woods, just in time to prepare lunch, not really expecting any more surprises along they way.

Sable rechecked the hand drawn map he had received from his friend and boss, Nick. The crudely sketched image was rather vague consisting of circled house in a forest of scraggly trees with a few dirt paths marked beyond the forest’s boundaries. He had figured that with the house not appearing to be very far into the tree’s depths that the little map would be enough to guide him to his destination. It was not.

Glancing down at the little map in a futile attempt to compare it to the landscape around him, he reluctantly admitted he was lost. In Whi Forest. Lovely. He considered delaying his search for another day, but as bad as the map was, it was his only source resembling directions. Sable was no woodsman. Sunlight filtered through branches to provide light, but the sun itself was obscured and could not be used to judge which way would guide him home. This was combined with the endless number of trees which blurred together to form a uniform mass of misdirection. Attempting to backtrack would only confuse him more. So onward it was.

Never again,” Sable muttered, “does Nick get to draw the maps. This is ridiculous.” The day had begun well enough with Nick calling Sable into his office to share the news of an old friend. He had an antique he was willing to part with if Nick desired to pick it up. Sable was Nick’s logical choice of errand boy. Which was fine, as Sable was curious about what the object may be and whether it would be something he could dismantle.

It’s all about the journey though, right?

Elias wasn't a master hunter for nothing. For as soon as he was in the vicinity of the other man he had heard the footsteps, his trained ear listening closely at every sound. His steps were light and fast, holding his bow with a stance and focusing on those strange heavy steps that pressed on the ground. At least Aric was fleet-footed, bare feet pressing on the grass lightly and gracefully. It was a shame that his mouth didn't follow suit.

"Is it a giant wolf? Oh! Oh! Maybe an antler bear----"

"..." he slowly put a gloved hand on Aric's lips, signaling him to be quiet, the boy nodded his head with a smile, mimicking the gesture as he was excited to see what would come from all of this.

Quickly Elias moved among the thick trees, behind the bushes and using the elevation of the ground so that he could see whatever was possibly going to approach them. He had to look out for his child, Aric and himself. He wasn't about to put the youth in trouble. The raven haired man motioned Aric to stay in his place, to which the blonde pouted but he understood, watching with curious blue eyes as Elias climbed that slope and continued to stalk his prey. And he knew it, he was getting closer and closer---yet the sounds weren't any kind of animal he knew at all in fact...

But he pushed those thoughts away, the creature was near! And with a rush of energy he sprinted, revealing himself from the trees and aiming an arrow at whatever monster revealed itself to him!

With wide-eyed wonder, Elias was staring at a man.

Sable consulted the map again. Should I have turned back there? He continued to fret despite the progress he thought he had slowly made. If only he had more solid landmarks to reference! Sadie's treasure hunting map had been drawn with more accurately than this scrap of lines. That had been rather fun actually. Sadie's folks had to leave for a few hours, so Sable had offered to watch the child for the day.

Sadie had rather quickly decided to create a game based on a pirate book her mother had been reading to her. She would be the pirate, obviously, and Sable would be the constable tasked with recovering the stolen goods. All he had to go on was a map fragment that he had recovered in the last battle between the pirates and lawmen.

That map had been rather painstakingly drawn, for the young girl, and colored with crayons. He still had the map among his possessions. It was precious to him.

It was not until Sable emerged from his reverie that he realized he was no longer alone. Two individuals had ghosted from the forest's depths at some point when he had been lost in memory.

"Oh!" he exclaimed softly. "I thought I might well be the only one out here! I don't suppose you know of anyone living nearby? My boss is an idiot who can't draw a map to save his life." Sable had been vaguely gesturing as he spoke and proffered the map as if intending to show these others what he meant.

In his excitement though, he had completely overlooked the particulars of the visitors. One was a child after all! In Which Forest, that hardly seemed safe. Then he noticed the drawn weapon aimed at him.

"Oh dear." What had he gotten himself into this time?

If the man hadn't spoken when he did, it was possible that Elias would have released his arrow. After all, he had a child to protect and his past experiences in this forest weren't exactly situations that you could hesitate on a clear shot. The brunette faltered in his form, wide-eyed and surprised as much as this stranger was yet he still kept it up just in case, not fully trusting or sure of who exactly this person was.

"Aric, stay behind me." he said calmly, to which Aric nodded his head and did just that, tilting his head to the side to this new comer. He was slightly disappointed it wasn't a creature, yet this man looked curious enough. But in any case, he seemed--- not dangerous at all. So the blonde whispered in a low voice to his guardian. "I don't think he's a monster, Elias."

The claim was obvious even to Elias yet he knew how some men could be monsters and despite their appearances. Though the hunter gave him the benefit of the doubt, his bow and arrow drawn and he and Aric at a safe distance. "Who are you, and what are you doing here?" his question wasn't harsh at all, quite gentle and concerned despite his aggressive stance. "This place isn't safe."

The world stilled. The faint breeze stirred fallen leaves along the ground while birds chirped and sang from higher branches. Insects buzzed along merrily. A brave squirrel scampered by. By none of this registered to Sable. Only the realization that this armed stranger considered him dangerous did. Ludicrous at another, safer time, but all too frightening now.

Regaining his composure was hard, much harder than he would have liked to admit. He was vitally concerned, though, with presenting a calm, non-threatening demeanor to these people. A mental side-note of “don’t make any sudden movements” was hastily added. Anything to dispel the notion that he was a threat. Is he trying to protect the child from me? A stranger? It looked that way, but he didn't want to learn if it meant doing it the hard way.

Not safe?” Sable finally spoke, “Yes, I can see that.” His words were accompanied by an uneasy glance back to the weapon. “But you asked me a question. Forgive my lack of manners. My name is Sable. A friend of mine, my boss really, asked me to find an acquaintance of his out here. I was told he lives here. Nearby, I’d thought, but I did get lost. We, Nick and I, work at an antique shop and my friend’s acquaintance said he had something of interest. I was sent for it…” he trailed off. “I found you instead.

A long moment had passed as his grey eyes observed the newcomer, the young man not easily trusting--the result of past experiences. He was slow and careful as he took a step forward with his weapon still drawn at the man, Aric following close by in quiet silence.

Finally he spoke after the introduction of the man, his stance easing up and his brow lifting. "You are nearing the boundary of the forest where it is most dangerous," he said seriously, finally lowering his weapon. Elias was not very trusting but he could at least tell the reaction of panic and nervousness that came from Sable. "You probably meant to go to east--that's where it's safer and has settlements. If you wish -- I could take you." That was when the brunette turned, casting a glance at Sable to see if he would accept his invitation.

"My name is Aric, nice to meet you!" The blonde suddenly piped up, moving around Elias to get a closer look at Sable, a bright smile on his face despite the tension in the air. And his guardian could only manage a sigh as he touched Aric on the shoulder and shook his head. He believed Sable but that didn't mean he trusted him completely. That was yet to be seen.
