Rock slides were generally not the sort of thing to be celebrated, they often put boulders in the way of common travelings paths and could kill or disturb the local flora and fauna. Shukri though was fond of them, provided they didn't occur while he was trying to climb something. Sometimes when the outer layers of the grey and purple mountains sloughed off he found interesting stuff underneath. Today he had carefully climbed over the newly settled rubble to investigate the dark black streaks in an otherwise bruise coloured cliff. One had to do this slowly though so as not to disturb the rocks and set off enough slide. It was worth it though as Shukri wedged himself into a crack in the rock and got a better look at what he had been seeking.

It was another fossil, a thing Shukri didn't quite understand but knew was interesting and valuable. This one appeared to be of some sort of many leafed plant that was unlike any that grew in Sauti today so far as he knew. Plant fossils were so much harder to get out of cliff sides though compared to bones and teeth and claws, you had to dig them out differently and that worked much better when they were simply in dirt or on the ground.

Still Shukri hadn't come all this way and scaled part of the cliff to just to decide it wasn't worth it. Listening carefully for the telltale signs of another rock slide Shukri pulled a chipped arrowhead from one of the travel pouches around his waist and began to carve his way into the purple stone. At least plants were thin so he wouldn't have to go too deep to get the fossil out.

It was a steady tapping sound that had alerted Jacin to the fact that something was going on outside the ordinary, or what he felt was the ordinary, of the rocky land of Sauti. He found himself wondering if it were some sort of animal, he's seen birds that liked to tap their beaks against trees, digging into them to find bugs. Maybe this was the same? Maybe some sort of animal was digging for food? If so the archer wanted to find it and see if it were something that looked to be on the edible side... though really that was a rather broad range when it came to him. Jacin had eaten bugs the size of his forearm after all that he hunted down in Jauhar, nothing else in the world could look worse so surely anything in Sauti, in comparison, would be more delicious then those thick shelled insects.

Moving in a slow, steady, careful manner, not wanting to make any sound that might disturb the rocks or scare off whatever he was stalking he slid his bow off his shoulder. He was getting closer, the sound of tapping was getting louder, and he could only find himself that much more curious as to what it was that he might be about to see. As he peeked into the area where Shukri was working Jacin couldn't have been more shocked. Oops... good thing he hadn't drawn an arrow yet or else he might very well have looked as if he were trying to start a fight with the Wind Tribe of something. Slinging his bow over his shoulder he watched for a moment what the other was doing. Looked like he was gathering fossils? They did look pretty neat and his hands itched to get one of those for himself, he wanted so badly to go and show it off to Keilana sure that his sister would love an old, fossilized flower. Then again she might think it a girly gift and hit him with the rock flower so maybe he should try to get her a fossilized animal instead?

Giving a bit of a smile at the thought he then turned his attention to the one gathering the fossils. A Wind Tribesman, one with the most interesting pink crystals, some of the looking rather spike like, one his skin and then he had that fascinating golden hair that was so different from all the other races that Jacin had encountered until this point. Despite being dirty from his work that hair still seemed to gleam in a manner that made it look like some sort of treasure. So neat! Reminding himself after a while that he was stalking and starring at the poor guy he figured he should make his presence known so that he didn't give the guy a heart attack. As suck he lifted a hand to his mouth and cleared his throat, something he'd learned was always a good way to get the attention of others. He just had to wait to see if the Wind Tribesman reacted alright to being approached by a foreigner.

Shukri froze at the sound of someone clearing his throat and craned his neck so he could see who it was from over his shoulder. Oh! This must be one of those leaf tribe types Takoda had been telling him about. He wondered how the dark haired male had managed to sneak up on him, most of the strangers were poor at at quietly navigating this unfamiliar land. When his pale blue eyes caught site of the bow the other wore then he understood, hunters of all types had to learn to be surefooted and quiet, Shukri was just glad he wasn't really prey.

"Hello there," he called out, loud enough to be heard but not so loud as to echo heavily and cause any sort of problems. As he waited for a reply Shukri shifted to a a position where he could look at the stranger more comfortably. He was almost like a dark mirror of Shukri which the prentice found more than a little odd. Takoda had described the leaf tribe to him when they met but it was strange seeing one in person.

Jacinthus gave a smile when it seemed that, while he might have surprised the Wind Tribesman a little, maybe, that he didn't seem to startle him enough that he caused any reaction other then the blond turning to look his way. Giving a smile the other listened to his greeting which made him lift one hand to give a little wave, "Hey there." He didn't really have all that much else that he could think of to say in response, taking a few steps closer to where the other was working, taking in what it was that he was looking at. He really did find quite a few really neat looking things, didn't he? Those fossils really were something, weren't they?

"You seem to have made some amazing finds here." He said, giving the other the praise he deserved for having found this place. Were Kei to bring back something like this amongst her treasures he would give her just as much praise after all so he shouldn't skimp on his kind words with this guy even if he were a stranger, "Is this your private spot?" He should probably ask, not wanting to intrude if this were a spot that the Wind Tribesman had claimed for himself. He would just have to see about finding a fossil elsewhere for Kei now that he knew that Sauti had such interesting things hidden among the rocks. For a while he was kind of thinking the place a little boring since it was just rocks upon rocks but now that he saw what the Wind prentice had found he couldn't help but to think that the place had some hidden character that he hadn't expected.

Setting his bow down to lean it against the nearest rock, a show that he was here in a peaceful manner. Best to keep everything nice and peaceful, even if Jacin weren't normally the most laid back of people.Instead he was more the sort that couldn't sit still... so an excavation wouldn't normally be his thing other then the time in Jauhar where he'd gotten a crystal for Kei... something that reminded him that he would need to get that to her when they got home.

Shukri shook his head "I'm one of the nomadic members of the wind tribe, we don't really own land." While Shukri had seen and even been inside a permanent settlement before he found he struggled to comprehend the idea of a piece of Sauti belonging to just one or a few people. Items he understood and animals but land, who were they to claim land when they couldn't live on it forever? Sure Shukri was using this area and he had every intention of taking the plant fossil he'd discovered but that didn't mean others were unwelcome to join him and see if area had other ancient things hidden. He had recoiled at the idea of the Alkidike possibly claiming Sauti when speaking with Takoda because this was where the wind tribe lived. It wasn't so much that he felt possessive over Sauti but that well he wasn't sure how to describe it, just that the place was home and he did not want to lose it.

"I came because I had heard about a rockslide and those usually help reveal hidden stuff." Not always of course and most of the time they caused more trouble than they provided anything valuable. Still, Shukri figured it didn't hurt to give an honest explanation of why he was here. He didn't know if there were mountains where the earth tribe boy was from, perhaps he could use this information back at home as well.

Though he hadn't been particularly worried Shukri was pleased when the stranger put down his bow. He knew the darker skinned male could have shot him when he was unawares if he'd wanted to so he'd guessed he meant little to no threat to him. Still it was a formidable weapon the archer wielded and Shukri assumed he could do serious damage with it if he chose to.

Battling with a gust of wind to keep his bangs out of his eyes the young prentice smiled welcomingly at the other earthling. " I'm Shukri and you're welcome to look for your own fossils if you want." He wasn't about to pass up the chance to meet another of the newcomers.

Jacin's mossy green eyes went a bit wide when the blond claimed that his people didn't own land, "Really?" He asked, it was clear the idea was one that shocked him a little then again given that he and Kei had fought tooth and nail for everything they had it was only natural. Their home, their possessions, all of it was stuff that they had to work hard for so the idea of not having that home, or those things, didn't sit well with Jacin. It was an idea that, while seemingly natural, wasn't something he care for at all and he found himself thankful for being among the Leaf Tribe, "I see." He finally said, not wanting to overreact, instead pushing the feeling aside. They had different ideas on how to live was all, same as how they were both far different from the Shifters and Alkidike, it just how it was. Still, he didn't know what he'd do without his home and sister to return to.

"Rock slide?" He asked, looking around at the area, taking in what the area around them looked like, and a bit of inspection did make it make more sense to him what it was that the guy meant. Rock slides weren't something that happened in Tale, then again the also didn't have such tall mountains that could suddenly break up in the way that this one had seemed to do. This place really was a strange one he thought to himself, glad that he hadn't come earlier since he might have been caught up in the slide then. Luck it would seem was on his side today in more ways then one, "I will be sure to keep an eye out." He didn't really feel like being crushed by rocks after only having just arrived after all. That would be as far from fun as anything he could think of at the moment.

All possible danger that went along with rock slides though seemed to be instantly forgotten when the Wind Tribesman, Shukri he said his name was, was suddenly telling him that he was welcome to look for his own fossils if he wanted, "Really? Wonderful! I am sure that little Kei would love something like this." He would of course show it off first, letting her know that he'd found such an awesome thing, then being the good big brother he was he'd share with her, "Thanks." The guy didn't have to share after all, even if said he'd said he didn't own the land. Just the fact that the guy was sharing seemed to endear him to Jacin who was always excited by such interesting treasures, "I'm Jacinthus by the way, though just Jacin or Jac is fine." He said as he moved forward to look around, wanting to find something neat for Kei.

"Welcome then Jacinthus, have fun, though I should warn you there are a few odd members of the wind tribe," Shukri noted a hint of distaste in his voice. "They live in permanent settlements and are not keen to share their resources. Such places are few and far between though and you will know long before you could accidentally trespass." Though what he had said before was true Shukri felt it only fair to mentioned that some small segments of the wind tribe had opted to survive in this land by taking possession of parts of it. He wasn't sure if Jacin or other members of the new tribes would stumble across a settlement given how far spread out they were.

"Is Kei a youngling from your tribe?" He asked, changing to subject to something more pleasant. Perhaps Jacin, like himself had a young friend much like he had Faiza. Or, Shukri supposed as he shifted a little so he could return to his excavation, it could be a young sibling like his own brother and sister.
PostPosted: Sun Aug 12, 2012 3:09 pm

Jacinthus gave a bit of a chuckle, "Thanks for the warning, though I can understand how they feel since we have permanent villages as well." He said, not really sure what he thought about the idea of living as a traveling sort all the time. He rarely sat still, was always wandering around, but was glad to have somewhere to return to when he was done with an adventure, "I will be careful not to get to close their homes if I can help it." He knew he didn't want any strangers getting too close to where he lived so it was only right that he didn't get too close to where others lived for sure. He would be sure to keep an eye out for the Wind Tribe settlements so that he could more easily avoid them though given the lay out of Sauti he found it was likely that it would be difficult to avoid them completely since they could be around any corner. The longer he was in Sauti the more he missed the openness of Tale, something he'd never though he'd find himself thinking since before coming here he'd thought Tale could be a little boring.

When the blond man asked if Kei was a youngling of his tribe he couldn't help but to laugh for a moment, "Man she would kill me if she heard that... I suppose I shouldn't refer to her as 'little Kei' around others since they tend to think that." He said, far to amused even if the nickname was likely going to get him murdered one day soon, "Actually she isn't too much younger then me, I just always refer to her as that since she is my younger sister." He explained, so that the other knew what he was laughing at. If Kei knew how many times people assumed she was a youngling because of Jacin she wouldn't be pleased that was for sure.

Giving pause the archer spotted a rather interesting looking pattern in the rocks before him, something that looked like it might be a fossilized... something. Sauti definitely had some interesting things laying around, didn't it? He wondered what it might have been. Kneeling down he ran a finger over it, curious as to if it were a plant or animal, he wasn't exactly the king of fossils by any stretch of the imagination but so long as it was strange and rare then Kei was sure to love it. As such he got out his knife and set to tapping away around the object with the hilt of it, "Where do you keep all of the stuff that you find on digs like this if you don't have a house?" He found himself asking of the blond, unable to keep the curiosity out of his tone. Maybe he had a hidden treasure trove somewhere? That was about what the place that Kei and himself shared looked like at first glance after all.

Ahh so it was a younger sibling then, just not a very young one. Shukri supposed he could understand using such a nickname even as you grew up since Jacin would always be the older one and Kei would always be little to him. Well unless she grew taller than him but Shukri didn't known many women who were taller than men.

The blonde wondered if he would still always think of Isra and Yasir as small even as they too aged and found their place within the tribe. Not that he himself was really going anywhere at the moment and he was still a prentice so it wasn't like he knew how it felt to be handed the responsibilities of a proper adult. On the other hand the young men his age who did have responsibilities didn't have nearly as much free time as Shukri got to enjoy so there was a tradeoff.

As Jacinthus began carving into the rock himself Shukri returned to the process of getting his own fossil out of the cliffside. At the other man's question he laughed softly, it seemed his people really were a mystery to Jacin. " We live in tents and when we have encampent's setup my stuff is stored in mine, well mostly, some stuff I just carry on me all the time." While those of the other tribe certainly weren't wandering around with no supplies he had seen none that carried the assortment of backpacks satchels and pouch lined belts that were customary in Sauti. " Fragile and precious stuff stays in the tent though and gets wrapped up and carried carefully when we travel to our next location." Shukri's collection of little treasures was often on display at the far side of his sleeping quarters so that he could see it as soon as he entered the tent. The tribe was too closely connected for him to need to worry about thieves.

As it was explained to him how the others lived Jacin gave a little nod of his head, able to picture it in his head to a point how that sort of living might be. It was a bit like camping out but on a more permanent basis he supposed, having slept away from home a few nights and there there when he'd wandered to far out to get back before nightfall. Still, to do it for a few days here and there was one thing, doing it for a living another. It would be far too much like the current journey that they were on at the moment and while it was an interesting adventure it certainly wasn't something that he wanted to do for a lifetime, "It sounds like quite an interesting life style." He commented as he worked on extracting the fossil from where it had been buried for countless years.

Turning to look over at Shukri he said, "It must be a lot of work to pack everything up before you move on. How long do you think that you stay in one spot at a time? Or does it just depend?" He found the Wind Tribe to be fairly interesting and given that they were staying in their lands for the time being it was probably a good idea to learn more about them, huh? The more he learned about them the more he found himself comparing their two tribe. They were quite different from each other but then again that could be said about all of the tribes. Of all of them though he noticed that they seemed to have the most in common, physically at least, with the Wind Tribe since they shared the same color of jewels upon their person. He had to admit though he found the spines that Shukri had to be rather fascinating.

"If you might indulge an odd questions... is it difficult to have those crystal spines?" He found himself asking, knowing it was a strange sort of question but surely it must make some things more interesting, like laying on your back for one. Jacin wasn't really the sort to filter his questions like some might and as it came to mind he asked it almost instantly.

Shukri had listened carefully to the questions as the pair of young men worked, each attempting to free a piece of lost history from it's rocky casing, or at the very least the larger rocky casing surrounding it. He approved of Jacinthus' curiosity and liked that he pried but not in an aggressive manner or about things that would be deemed sensitive. Shukri might enjoy sneaking about and getting information from people but he didn't want to be put in a situation where someone tried to get him to divulge secrets or the weaknesses of his people.

"Well for the first one, the moving thing, it really depends on a lot of different stuff. Sometimes a planned camping ground is occupied or food and water is too scarce that year and so we only stay a week or so. Other times if situations are right a few months is the most we stay put." The blue eyed boy paused for a moment to brush his bangs out of his face before continuing on. " Also some places are only good for a short time at different times of the year or only meant to be very temporary anyways so we don't stay long." The current encampment was one of the longer stay ones near more resources than they generally saw while traveling or at other camps. The previous one had been a shorter stay one meant to allow the band to hunt during an annual migration, the encampment being location not too far from the traditional path the beasts took though they only passed by it for a few days.

"As for the jewels," Shukri shrugged "You grow up with them so we never know any different. I mean I haven't caught them on my clothes getting dressed since I was small and even as younglings we learn the ways in which we can or can't rest our bodies." A small flush rose in the young man's face has he continued on. " I have heard that it can be a little difficult to um.. well to get someone else used to knowing your body though." Lust apparently made people careless and more then a few people his age had ended up with some interesting injuries while messing about.

Jacinthus seemed to be listening closely, his ears twitching a bit, rather enjoying learning about the Wind Tribe since before they came to Sauti he didn't even know they existed. His world had been so much smaller then, it was just Jauhar and Tale and the only ones he knew of other then his own people were the Alkidike and the Shifters. This all just made him wonder what else there was out there to be seen, and to learn how they lived and why they moved around made it all seem that much interesting, "I see." He murmured, giving a bit of a nod when the other mentioned food and water being a reason for why they moved around, "Now that I can understand, water is pretty can be pretty scarce where we come from other then the places we set up our homes. Little oasis where we can have the water needed to survive even in the dry months. Still, traveling away from home can be quite the pain if we aren't careful. I am in awe of your people and the way they move around." He always planned for each venture out into Tale or Jauhar carefully, to make sure he would be prepared. It was nothing though compared to what the Wind Tribe did, was it?

"There is a lot I could learn from the way you do things. Perhaps I aught to explore Tale more closely, to find places that I can move between while I am on hunting trips." He mused, already planning to try just that once he got home. It might be a while from now but it would be something that he would benefit from, not to mention those that his hunting trips helped to feed.

As conversation turned from survival to the jewels he was once more listening closely, giving a bit of a nod when he said that he grew up with them so he never knew any different, then he said that they learned as younglings the way they could rest, "Makes sense." He said, then couldn't help but to chuckle when Shukri flushed while explaining that there were difficulties when someone else was getting used to your body. Ahhh, now that also made sense though in a slightly embarrassing manner. He could see how, in times like that, that having spikes on your body might be a little awkward. He was glad that his own jewels were pretty well smooth and didn't pose a threat, not that he really had anyone who might come in contact with them in such a manner though, "Something else that comes with experience, I'm sure." He finally commented, giving another little laugh as he turned his attention back to the fossil he was working on freeing.

Shukri was pleased that Jacinthus seemed to be coming to appreciate the way members of the nomadic wind tribe lived. It was good to learn to be adaptable and how to call anyplace home if you needed to. The pale haired young man wondered if there were things he could learn in return from the other tribes, surely something they knew or did would be relevant to life in Sauti. it was in moments like these that Shukri was glad to be the sort of person who was interested in trading information, it never hurt to be one of the first to learn new skills.

Shukri laughed softly at Jacinthus' final comment and blushed a bit more. "Everyone seems to get the hang of it eventually, I'm not really looking forward to when I have to learn though" he admitted. Shukri doubted he was going to be one of those people who it just clicked for and thus got by with minimal fuss. He had a hard enough time dealing with conflicting and confusing feelings as it was these days, the last thing he really needed was to add the awkwardness of physical intimacy.

Besides he had no time for that sort of thing right now anyways, at least fossil hunting and the like came with a proper reward for your efforts. Yep, Shukri was quite content to spend his days with physical activities that were more centered on the finding and retrieving of valuables.
