Chalcedony was the sort to take responsibility quite seriously, especially when it came to his people. As such the moment that the title of 'guard' was given to him he wanted to do just that, he wanted to guard them. Unable to get some alone time quite yet with his friend Takoda he decided that he would see about doing some rounds, make sure that everything still appeared calm around where the three groups were camping during their temporary alliance. He could only hope so, not feeling as though he were ready to break up any major fights between tribes though if needs be he would do exactly that. Or at least he would attempt exactly that, how it went at this point was anyone's guess.

Walking along the dark skinned guard glanced from side to side, taking in everything around, him, then gave momentary pause when a dark shadow flew by. He glanced up, spotting one of the scruffy, grumpy birds that he'd met earlier before he continued along on his patrol. Was it just him or was that bird following him around? He knew that it would probably sound crazy if he said it out loud, it seemed crazy enough when he just thought it, but he'd swear that was what was going on. He could even tell that it was the same bird given that one of it's tail feathers looked as though it were half broken off. It was a distinct thing and one hard to miss when a creature was constantly circling. He figured that either it was mad at him for helping the old man take back his heirloom treasure, grateful that he gave the other trinkets back, or it meant to try to take another bite out of him because it thought he tasted good. He hoped for that second option personally as he walked along, not wanting to be nipped at by any more birds for some time to come.

As he moved along on his self appointed patrol, not really going too terribly far from camp just in case something happened, he found himself wondering idly how long they planned to stay, if they were going to perhaps go deeper into Sauti, and if he might see that strange woman from the day that he was appointed as a guard again before they left these lands. All questions that were, for the time being, without answers. Perhaps he should consider asking Antiope if she got a minute when she wasn't busy, though he wondered if she would even begin to answer the last question of his since he had no idea if anyone else had seen the woman who'd given him the shield he was currently carrying. He supposed he would only know if he asked her, something he'd see about doing later, once he'd made a few circles around the camp and deemed everything safe.

This was all Faiza's fault and Shukri was never going to do anything nice for his formerly favourite youngling again so long as he lived.. if he lived. Fai had asked him to gather some bones for her to make beads with. Far too young to actually choose to craft as a career the youngling rarely got at any of the good bones that came in from hunts and was often left to practice with lower quality materials. She was also too young to leave the camp unattended and everyone was too busy to take her on a trip right now.

Shukri though had free time and had figured it wouldn't be that difficult to find a set of sun bleached bones or a vacated carcass to gather stuff from. Faiza was, outside of his family, his favourite person in the band and he didn't really mind helping her with simple things like this., though it didn't hurt that Faiza was always good at repaying favours.

Off Shukri had gone in search of bones, scouring the nearby area and then venturing a bit further away from camp when he found nothing. Years of being on the move had made Shukri quite fast and though his legs were only so long he could cover the ground or scale the nearby rocks with ease. It was in dropping down from a small outcropping that Shukri found exactly what he'd been looking for. A small shallow cave filled with bones, all of them the same type and upon closer inspection not a one of them looked line it had been chewed or separated from the rest by force. This was not some predators cache but a place where for some reason many of these beasts had died or, Shrukri had frowned and crouched down to better examine the bones, some seemed far older than others. So were the creatures coming here to die then for some reason?.

There was likely something deep and meaningful in all of that and Shukri would ponder the significance of it and that place later. in the meantime he had gone about collecting the type of bones requested as well as a few teeth and claws for his own personal use. Everything had been going fine until an old mangy looking critter had shown up, presumably to die and had taken offense to Shukri's looting of the skeletons. While the creature had never been an true predator in it's prime it still had sharp teeth and claws and Shukri had been on the run from it after narrowly making it out of the cave.

As a prentice all he had to defend himself was a simple sling and while he had no problem taking the bones of the dead or defending himself normally he couldn't bring himself to attack an old likely already dying creature.

This softheartedness had lead Shukri to where he was now, 30 or forty paces ahead of the beast that would not stop stalking him. Both had long since stopped running and slowed to a walk, both trying to outlast the other. Shukri had no idea where the creature, which was practically skin and bones now, found the stamina to continue to peruse him. All he knew was that he saw someone else in the distance and hopefully the creature would back away rather than deal with two of them.

When the Shifter first saw the blond coming in his direction it was from a distance, making it merely seem as though someone were traveling around with some sort of strange beast following him. It was something that he himself had gotten used to since the day he'd been given the rank of guard since a one of the scruffy birds he'd met since that day had been following him. As the Wind Tribesman got closer though he found himself studying him more closely, he looked... exhausted, didn't he? Looking passed him at the beast he realized that it wasn't exactly a pet, was it? If anything it looked half starved and its eyes were completely locked on the one that it was following and it seemed to click in Chal's head, that beast was planning to eat the blond, wasn't it? It was a shocking thought and he found himself quickening his steps so that he could close the distance between himself and the member of the Wind Tribe.

Once he got close enough Chal slid to a halt, placing himself between the blond stranger, lifted his shield up before them, then looked at the beast watching it closely. It was old, frail, broken, and likely chasing down the Wind Tribesman because the beast saw him as a meal that it might be able to take on since he didn't have the claws, teeth, or horns that other beasts possessed. He didn't like the idea of attacking a weak creature but there was no way that he could really allow the beast to eat someone. Thinking on it for a moment he used his free hand to dig into his pack, moving his hand around until he found one of the wrapped, smoked fish that he'd traded fruit for toward the beginning of the journey and he figured that he might as well share it now when it might be useful. He wasn't sure if it were fit for consumption by himself or another tribe, he'd been saving it in case the bird decided to ever come down out of the sky, but figured that now was as good a time as any to take it out.

Lifting his hand into the air, waving the smoked fish from side to side he said to the blond I am gonna toss this, when the creature is distracted we will see about making our escape, alright?" He could only hope the plan would work as he gave the fish a toss, landing it in front of and a little to the right of the beast before he turned to look at Shukri, "Alright, let's going." He said, hoping the fish, and the cloth it was wrapped in, would distract the beast long enough for them to put room between them and it.

While Shukri had been planning to get the shifter to help him he'd not expected the other man to be quite this useful. There was no way the beast was going to get past the currently dark skinned shifter and his shield. Which meant Shukri and the small hoard that rested in the pack upon his back and in the pouches in his belt were safe. It was perhaps a little embarrassing to be hiding from a native predator behind the stranger but Shukri valued being practical and healthy over proud and injured or dead. Besides he would have been hiding behind someone no matter who it was. Shukri, while athletically built, was no fighter and avoided any confrontation that couldn't be handled with a few shots from his sling.

Shukri had to give the other man points for creativity, he'd not even though about trying to use food to persuade it to stop following him. Not that he'd had a lot of time to deeply contemplate the situation then, not that he had all that much now. As soon as he was told to get going the wind tribe prentice started moving again, eager to put as much distance between himself and the vengeful predator as possible he moved as quickly as possbly without doing anything so rash as breaking into a full run which might draw the predators attention. " Thanks," the single word was a breathless pant but filled with gratitude nonetheless.

For it's part the beast did indeed stop following the wind boy and made no move to pursue him and the odd smelling stranger. While the capacity for sorrow was in it's nature so was the need to eat and it had been thrown free food. Old and weary it may have been but the desire to ease it's hunger was still there and the beast began to set about trying to release it's meal from the strange encasing.

Chalcedony was quick to lead the blond away from the beast, only checking back from time to time to make sure that the creature wasn't following. For now it would appear as if the beast were distracted with the fish that he'd tossed to it though he realized now he no longer had anything to offer to the bird other then fruit and he had no idea if they had anything like it in Sauti so would the bird take such an offering? He supposed he wouldn't know until he met with the bird. Dragging his thoughts away from something so simple as that and back to the present he turned his attention to the blond that was walking alongside of in a hurried manner. The Shifter couldn't help but to give him a bit of a smile when he was thanked for his help to which he answered as he always did, "It's alright, I just wanted to help." He really did have a habit of jumping in wherever he was needed. In fact this guy wasn't even the first Wind Tribesman that he'd helped and he hadn't even been here all that long.

"Is there anywhere nearby that would be a good place for you to take a rest?" He found himself asking, he didn't really know his way around, not all that well at least, and he figured that if there was anyone to ask it would be someone that lived in this area. Until they got somewhere that would be safe enough for them to slow down in he would keep himself at ready, keep looking over his shoulder, and make sure the creature that this guy had been chased by wasn't following still, "Mmm, seems like he liked that fish." He said, giving a bit of a laugh, wondering how often a beast like that might actually get a chance to eat a fish... he really had no idea. The creature didn't quite look to be a fishing sort so this might very well be a first. Well, if it distracted the beast then he was happy. Like with the birds from earlier he had no reason to fight with them or harm them unless it came down to a point where it was kill or be killed. Today, he hoped, wouldn't be a day where that situation arose.

"Most scavengers like easy meals," Shukri pointed out with a bit of a grin as he surveyed the area and looked for the best place to rest." We can rest up there," he pointed to the top of a rocky arch that connected two nearby elevated bits of land. " It's not going to climb after us, I don't even think it can." The beast might have been able to follow after him for some time but that had been walking over fairly flat surface, Shukri was pretty sure it couldn't drag it's carcass up a proper rocky incline right now. Not that he was in great shape for climbing right now either but the prentice would manage even if it hurt. He had no concerns about his rescuers ability to follow, after all he was a shifter like Takoda and they climbed trees all day.

Wasting no time Shukri set about finding a good place on the wall to start scaling it. His pale skin was flushed with adrenaline and taking on a pink shade darker than the one that tinted his otherwise golden hair. This was not how his days normally went and even his most incredulous adventures had not featured him being hunted by a decrepit old beast angry that he took it's kin's bones. Something for which Shukri was still not sorry, he'd been on a mission after all and honestly it wasn't like they were going to be used just lying in that cave. At least with him and Fai, the bones, teeth and claws would find new purpose.

Chalcedony paused for a moment as the blond motioned to where it was that they would be going to wait out the beast and he gave a slow nod of his head, "Alright, that should work." He was more used to climbing trees but he meant to do his best in climbing up the rocks since he wasn't wanting to leave the blond on his own even if he didn't think that the beast couple climb up to the arch after him. He would leave the guy on his own after he'd gotten some rest. It did seem as if he were a bit tired, making him wonder how long that beast had been after him. He figured that he could ask him about it once they got up to their high perch for some rest.

As they made it to the foot of the hill he shifted his shield, looked up to where the blond was, then set to climbing up after him. It felt a bit different then the trees that he was used to climbing but he felt that, with some effort he should be able to make it up. It was a bit exhausting though he realized part way up, the fact that there was less to hold on to, no branches over head to shade them with, and the weight of his shield. Still, he was able to keep up with the Wind Tribesman that he was following. Once at the top of the arch he slid the shield off his arm to set it next to him, sat down, and gave a sighing sound, "Phew." One hand brushing a bit of sweat away from his forehead he found himself looking out over the landscape and he couldn't help but to stare, "Wow... what a view." Far different from home, one needed to get up to the tops of trees to see as far as this. If you with were down among the branches all you saw was other branches, other trees, one didn't get to see nearly this far off as this. It really was a little on the breathtaking side.

Turning to look over at the one he was sitting with he gave a smile, "How are you doing?" He asked, hoping that he was doing after what he'd been through before the two of them met up. He didn't look as though he'd gotten bitten, that was good. He was lacking himself in healing skills, that was more for people like Takoda who was trained for such things.

"I'm ok, just a little tired," Shukri admitted as he let his heart beat calm and his body relax not that he was no longer being pursued or forced to climb. From here he could see the scavenger best that had been after him, it had destroyed the wrapping around the fish and was now devouring it slowly with what teeth it still had. The young prentice wondered if the meal would give it the energy to eventually make it back to it's intended final resting place. He sort of hoped so for reasons other than the fact that he was putting it on one of his maps as a good resource cache.

"The view is nice here but it's better from some of the smaller mountain tops," Shukri noted, responding to one of his Savior's earlier comments. "You probably shouldn't try to climb anything bigger than that though" he continued and pointed a mountain off in the distance. "If you try to go too high too quickly you can get very sick and die." The air thinned heavily the further up you went and even members of the wind tribe could not climb the tallest mountain in one day as their bodies could simply not adjust fast enough to the changing atmosphere. Well there were rumors to the contrary but Shukri didn't personally know of anyone who had ever dared try such a thing. Even he had too much respect for the mountains and Bergchi to think he could simply scale anything with no repercussions.

Able now to properly greet the other Shukri offered a grit covered hand to the shifter. "I'm Shukri, thanks again for saving me."

"I'm glad to hear that." He said, giving a smile as he looked over to where the old, skin and bones beast was, tearing apart the wrapping that the fish had been covered in before giving a bit of a smile. He was glad that he could help that creature out as well though he could tell just by looking at it that the beast was old and unlikely to last too terribly much longer even if it were able to find itself a big meal. It was rather old after all, probably at the end of its life and it probably knew that but still instinct had driven it to look for food. Chal was glad that its intended meal hadn't been something that the beast had been able to catch since Chal didn't have any training in healing. Maybe he ought to ask Takoda about that, to see if he couldn't learn at least a bit about it. The best he could treat were the cuts and scrapes that his siblings got while they were playing after all.

Turning to look over at the blond he listened closely as he was told about how dangerous it could be to high up to high in Sauti, that one could actually get sick and die from it. Chal's eyes went a little wide at that, "Really?" He murmured, surprised. He had been to the tops of the trees in Jauhar and hadn't had such a dangerous reaction before... it seemed as though Sauti had a lot of dangers, didn't it? He would need to be careful not to go too high up in Sauti if there was such a risk to it, not that he really meant to wander that far away from the other Shifters. The only reason he wasn't with them now was just because he had been wanting to do some rounds, to make sure that everything was safe, and would likely end up back with the soon enough. At least once that beast had moved on that was.

Chal's attention was once more on Shukri when the blond held a hand out to him and he reached out to take it, giving it a shake, "It's good to meet you Shukri, my name is Chalcedony." While the circumstances could have been better it was still nice to meet him regardless.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 13, 2012 4:54 pm

"What made you want to come to Sauti, Chalcedony?" Shukri asked curiously as he slowly drew his hand back after the shake. Shukri himself was the adventurous sort but some of those he had met from the other tribes were not and well he couldn't imagine going so far from home just to see what was out there if you weren't going to enjoy yourself along the way. Shukri was also nosy by nature and liked to learn everything he could about people so knowing Chalcedony's motivations served multiple purposes.

Chalcedony had to think about it for a moment then finally said, "I think the very basic reason was wanting to get stronger. I have a big family at home you see." One likely to get bigger since his father was home and that always seemed to be what happened when his parents were left along, "And I want to be able to better protect them from all of the various dangers there are in Jauhar." Of which there were plenty, up to and including the very people that they were traveling with though he figured he should keep that to himself. He didn't want to worry the Wind Tribesman when the Alkidike likely had no problems with them... yet at least. They would need take Jauhar and Tale both before they could set to attacking Sauti after all and somehow he could almost see them wanting to do just that one day.

"I was all well and fine with trying to get stronger back home, to be useful there, but once my father got back from one of his patrols he signed me up for this. I kinda wonder if he knew I would be away so long." It had been quite a while already and he could tell that they weren't quite ready to head back yet. He did kind of look forward to that day though, he did miss them. Lifting a dark colored hand to tap it against his shield he said, "I think I am doing well so far, I actually got a shield and the rank of guard during the trip so already I am well on my way to be someone that can protect my family." Something that pleased him like nothing else.

Shifters were an oddly noble bunch, Shukri noted, or at the very least the two he'd met so far had seemed that way. Still it was good to know that Chalcedony really had no ulterior motives in joining in with the group that had come here. He felt a little bad for the other male having been signed up to travel seemingly against his will though, even of some good had come out of it all.

"You certainly seem to be doing a good job of protecting me," the young man admitted with a slight smile. "And congratulations, getting titled is important, do you think your family will be sad they weren't here to see it?" Chalcedony sounded close to his kin and Shukri wondered if there was any bitter sweetness in getting promoted to guard when those he wanted to protect most weren't there to celebrate with him.

Chalcedony couldn't help but to be pleased when the Wind Tribesman commented that he'd done a good job protecting him, it made him quite happy to hear though he would feel as though he'd done a really good job only after he got the blond somewhere that was truly safe. While where they were had a nice enough view it wasn't exactly what he considered to be the safest place ever, especially given the terrain. At least that old, worn down beast couldn't get them up here, a bonus for sure, "I am glad that I happened along when I did." He mused, really glad that he had made it, having been sort of patrolling at random since he didn't know the terrain as well as he did that of Jauhar.

"I think that my sisters might be a little sad, my mother too, but I am sure that my father will be pleased even if it's not exactly what he'd had in mind for me." He still had a younger brother so perhaps the man's dream of having a son that followed in his footsteps might still be realized. That or the twins might do it, now that he could see quite easily given how much like Father they could be at time he thought to himself. It was a thought that had him glancing momentarily in the direction he knew Jauhar was in. He missed them, it was obvious by the look on his face, but he wanted to see this journey through to the end. Once it was over and done with though he would be only too happy to get home and get to work keeping everyone there, his family included, safe with his new skills and equipment, "I almost see a party when I return just for me returning, it will get even more exciting when they learn of my rank." He knew now that he would have a million questions to answer when he got back, his siblings always the curious sorts, not to mention a bunch of stories that they would demand that he told as well. It would be interesting for sure.

Giving a little flush he said, "Sorry, I tend to end up talking a lot when it comes to my family." He said, sure that not everyone was really interested in a foreigners family life but he couldn't help it, he loved them so much that his mouth often got away with him when they came up.
PostPosted: Mon Oct 22, 2012 4:10 pm

"If I wasn't interested in knowing I wouldn't have asked," Shukri pointed out. He wanted to reassure Chalcedony that a little rambling wasn't going to bother him. "Besides, your family sounds nice and like they probbaly talk about you just as much." All the family talk just made Shukri glad his own kin and Faiza were not that far away. He was no great protector but he had his place amongst them and they had always accepted him for what he was.

( Sorry my brain ran out of things to say here sad I should be able to write more if we get them moving again or something but I couldn't find a smooth way to transition the conversation. )

He gave a little smile at the comment about his family talking about him as much as he did them, "It's possible, with as often as I spoiled them." He said with a little chuckle. He loved his siblings and wanted to help his mother as much as he could since their father was often away on patrols, as such he tended to be a bit on the motherly side to them in the same manner that their mother was, something father always frowned upon. Turning to look toward where the beast had been eating the dried fish he realized that it had gone on its way and was no longer in sight, must be on its way back to whatever it had been doing before it had decided that Shukri looked like a tasty snack, "Seems that your friend is gone." He said, looking from side to side to make sure that nothing else was waiting for them to come down and into its mouth but he saw no other dangers.

"Coast is clear, do we want to make our way down and see about getting you back to your people?" He asked of Shukri, sounding as though he wanted to see this bodyguard job through to the end, to make sure that the blond was brought safely back to his people. Then and only then would be feel ready to go back to where the Shifters were all gathered as he didn't feel right just leaving the Wind Tribesman all on his own out here, "I am ready to make the climb back down when you are."
