The Whispering Woods had held to their name for the many years that Dovev had held the peace within them. The trees murmured to each other in hypnotic voices, and the brown-and-gold stallion listened to each and every word, memorizing their language though he knew he would never speak it. Though the speech was never anything that could be translated to words, it was always soothing conversation and pleasant exchanges, soft whispers of emotion trickling through the green canopy and pitter-pattering to the sot ground below.

Yet this day, something was amiss.

The air was crisp, and the words of the trees were harsh and biting, worried and nervous. Dovev's hair stood on end, his stocky form standing hard against the wind. His ears turned into it, and he could hear the carried voices; someone was hunting within his wood. A frown creased his features, the horror weighing heavily on his heart. As he started at an easy gait down the hill, he could only hope that he would not be too late to rescue the poor soul.

Wynear was totally, absolutely, definitely lost. Not that he frequented the woods - too many shadows and spooky sounds for him! - but these woods in particular were especially confusing. Dark and overhanging, their boughs blocked out almost all traces of sunlight, even though it was still day. Or, he thought it was still day - who knows how long he had been running? At the sound of a stream, the starborn lurched and came to an awkward halt, burying his nose in the cool, sweet water. Even as he took his respite, his ears flicked from side to side, listening closely, hoping they wouldn't hear that terrible...

      "RRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrRRRRRR..."

With a whimper, Wynear was off again. All day this stupid predator had been following him, no matter where he tried to hide. His hooves had drummed endlessly, carrying him far - too far - from the field he called home, through terribly scary swamps and woods, all the way to here (wherever here was). And still the beast pursued him. Tears of desperation were prickling his eyes as he felt his chest heave painfully. He couldn't keep up this pace for much longer. The footfalls of the beast drew terrifyingly closer, and Wynear craned his head behind him, better to see his doom.

"Oof!" Something solid and definitely not a tree caught Wynear in the chest, sending him stumbling backwards. In his horror, his first thought was another beast bent on devouring him, but he could not be further from the truth. A chocolate-brown stallion stood before him, bearing a golden bridle, a sky-blue horn, and a solemn expression. Without even bothering for introductions, the frightened star scurried behind his new protector, stammering out his request between gasps. "Pl-Please, help me, please, a- a something, j- just behind me, g-growling..."

When he first spotted the stallion, Dovev stopped, gazing down the hill. The other equine was dashing up the hill desperately, appeared to be running from something, but without knowing what it was, the stocky brown male had no intent to dive in head-first. After all, standing as he was at the top of the hill, the tailless male was bound to notice him before he reached the top?

Dovev discovered how wrong he was with the feeling of the smaller male colliding with his chest, causing a small 'oof' to fall past the forest guardian's lips. Blue eyes grew wide when the male didn't so much as pause to introduce himself, immediately scurrying behind him instead. The instruction, however, was enough to excuse his behaviour, causing the dark brown star to straighten himself, puffing out his chest and flaring his nostrils, casting his gaze to the path this new star had been following. A scrawny she-wolf leaped from the trees, backpedaling at the sight of the stallion, though she continued her ferocious growling. It was no wonder – judging by her appearance, food in her area must be scarce, and he was doing her no favours by denying her the cowardly male who begged for protection.

Even so, it was against his principles to deny any creature protection when it was needed, and he bowed his head to the wolf, pawing at the ground with a front hoof. The creature seemed doubtful, wild eyes flicking to his gold hoof to the grave face of the chestnut stallion before she finally turned herself around and ran back into the forest, leaving the old star with a new charge. Jaded eyes fell upon the curious brown-eyed companion he'd gathered, sizing him up before nodding for him to follow as Dovev started toward his home.
