Arian had taken the chance on powering up to Athene after school, the dark-haired teen choosing to hide behind one of the large dumpsters in the series of alleyways that ran near to the late night diner where he bought his hot drinks on patrol night. Sometimes it was useful not being particularly tall (or in non-Arian speak – short ).
A bit of ‘sparkle-sparkle’ later and it was Arian’s powered alter-ego, Super Sailor Athene that was stepping from behind the dumpster, senshi phone to hand. The dark-haired senshi’s usual modus operandi of sneaking out to go patrol had been out lately. His cousin had been too twitchy lately, probably a side-product of having to get stiches after being stabbed by the crazy spear-wielding Nega General, although his cousin was under the impression that he’d run afoul of a gang. Either way it had been a couple of days since that night and Athene figured that he should take the chance on getting a message out to Polaris to let the other senshi know that he was okay.
As he sat on a nearby wall to tap out said message, the dark-haired senshi was probably not paying as much attention to his surroundings as he probably should have.

Eternal Sailor Chaonis was feeling, as he often was when he came out on patrol, pent up. Every time he powered up he felt that magic in him, that strength that came with his sphere and title and all those 'responsibilities' that everyone talked about. It was more the former two he cared about most. He lived for the thrill of his own strength, and for the challenge of finding a way to occupy his time.
Something worthy of him, of course.
Maybe worthy was not the right word. He was not that kind of proud. No, he was cocky and brazen, looking for fun and danger. That probably was partly explained by his sphere, but the rest was just attitude.
He had that to spare.
Walking along, he saw the youma first, then saw the senshi it was heading for. He was atop a building, near the wall Athene was on. He could have easily called out a warning to the senshi, but he didn't, watching the monster as it loped its way toward the senshi and then leaped at him.
Chaonis watched, arms folded over his chest. The youma looked kind of piddly, so it wouldn't be hard to kill, and it wasn't particularly threatening in appearance. No spikes or claws or teeth to speak of. He wondered what the senshi would do, though, as Chaonis, by sight alone, had marked Athene as a wuss.

As a civilian, the dark-haired teen was the sort of person who had to tap out complete sentences in his text messages – powering up to Athene didn’t change things – no ‘text speech’ for this senshi. After hitting send, the dark-haired senshi banished the phone and looked up – just in time to see a youma, that seemed to have appeared from out of nowhere leaping in his direction. “Ack!” as he tried to shift out of the way, the dark-haired senshi overbalanced and fell off the wall instead, landing on the ground with an ‘oof’. It had the benefit of causing the youma to sail over him, although the thing didn’t seem have the same problem landing that Athene had had. Maybe it was a good thing that the dark-haired senshi hadn’t picked a particularly high wall to sit on, although Athene still felt like a bit of an idiot as he picked himself up off the ground.

"Nice duck, wuss!"
Chaonis laughed, watching Athene scrabble. It was just not fair, he had seen the youma coming and put Athene in this situation by refusing to help. Instead he pointed and he laughed, and he teased when Athene nearly failed to react in time. That wasn't fair, was it?
Of course, the senshi of Danger did not really care about fairness.
He was there to make a point, as per usual. So he was going to do so with style. He watched the youma circle back, judging it to be a moderately strong one.
"Alright, head in the game. Show that thing what you can do! If you can do anything. What are you? The senshi of frills?" He grunted and shook his head, not too worried. This wasn't a training mission, so much as it was a chance for him to vent some frustration.
Bullying built up if he didn't do it much.

Athene’s head shot up surprised as he heard another voice and laughter, he had company? Actually come to think of it the dark-haired senshi could sense another aura, one of a senshi, but stronger than him – so an eternal senshi then. Surprised turned to embarrassment as it sunk in that the other had mostly seen him toppling off the wall – that definitely hadn’t been his finest hour. Catching sight of movement Athene turned in the direction of the youma, clenching his right fist as he did so “Blue Beads of Nazar!” The youma had started to rush back in his direction in the time it took for the beads to form and as the dark-haired senshi directed the beads towards it, he hoped that this would one of the times that his unreliable senshi ability decided to actually work. At least though it was two against one though, or so Athene thought – the dark-haired senshi had no idea that the eternal senshi out there currently had no plans to intervene. [ooc note: Athene’s basic attack takes the form of a ‘ball of beads’ that can trap a target with ill will towards Athene in a barrier of beads if it connects. (Ill will means that the target wishes to cause some form of harm to Athene). Target can still jump, block, or strike with their weapon - but they cannot leave the ring of beads. Beads can be smashed by someone outside the barrier, smashing half (12 to 15) will bring down the barrier.

Chaonis watched.
He was good at that. Very good at not getting involved in things that he probably should have gotten involved in, though much better at butting in where he was not needed. Except he felt he was needed here, this guy was going to get his butt eaten by some lame youma.
Though, with that set up it seemed like Chaonis was there to help Athene, which was not the case. Not in the classic sense, anyway.
No, instead of using his own attacks, or getting in there to deliver a few good punches, Chaonis was just going to stand back and watch, and shout largely unhelpful, insulting things until the youma was dusted or there was no choice but to get in there and dust it himself. For all his bluster, he did actually care about the side he fought for, and he didn't want to see more people getting hurt.
He watched the attack, looking surprised. It looked like another barrier thing, but at least it was effective.
"Now what? It's not a decoration that needs beading! Stop bedazzling and make that thing dead!"

Athene breathed a sigh of relief as the youma’s move in his direction was caught short by the beads from his senshi ability. Despite the fact that his senshi ability had seemed to work better ever since the night where he had upgraded to Super, it had let the dark-haired senshi down too badly in the past for him to want to take it for granted. He glanced in the direction of the other senshi as he spoke, a flicker of confusion passing across his face at the other’s words decoration? Bedazzling? Athene wasn’t sure what the older senshi was talking about – well apart from the making the youma dead part – he got that bit. “I guess we dust the thing” he said to the other senshi, picking up a bin lid from a nearby bin. It still hadn’t sunk in that the eternal senshi might not actually be there to help, probably as under other circumstances Athene would have done his best to pitch a hand in

"What is this we thing?"
Chaonis was not going to help. He wanted to see this guy finish the fight and dust the youma on his own, with as little help from Chaonis as possible. That was the best way to get stronger. Chaonis was a life line. A thin, shaky, untrustworthy life line that did not instill the most confidence, but was better than nothing and might just pull through when it needed to.
"That's your fight, jingles, not mine. You made that thing angry, you put it down: that's what a senshi has to do. Fight for themselves. Yeah yeah, all that 'we're a team' bullshit is great and helps with the warm fuzzies, but if you're on your own you just gotta do what you gotta."
He disregarded the fact that he was technically there and was basically obligated to help, but was just pretending to be some sort of god that could not interfere in the lives of mortals.
Athene was probably lucky that Chaonis wasn't making it worse, by attacking the senshi for some 'training' or something. Though, now he was considering it.

“I’m sorry, I misunderstood” Although the words spoken were polite there was a slight stiffness to Athene’s voice. The beads imprisoning the youma had already faded away and Athene hung onto the edge of the bin lid as the thing started loping in his direction. When it got within reach Athene used the metal lid to swing out at the youma as hard as he could. He assumed the eternal senshi wasn’t going to stick around – after all the unknown senshi had made it pretty clear that as far as he was concerned the dark-haired senshi of beads was on his own. Surely he wasn’t going to hang around and just watch… Surely Athene wasn’t that unlucky.

Chaonis watched and frowned at Athene's progress. He shook his head and leaped down to the fight at last.
"What's this? Using a piece of trash? Use your fists, dude! You're a dude, right?"
Anger was usually his best teacher. Get someone frustrated and they fight harder, but Athene seemed really level headed. Chaonis did not like people who knew how to keep their cool under mocking and duress. Maybe he just needed to step things up, but now he was getting involved and going the direct path.
"Like this," he said. It had turned in to a chance to show off which was just as good to him in his mind. Teaching or just showing how awesome he was. He moved to punch the youma as hard as he could.
He believed in a senshi's strength, raw and without aid. They didn't need to use their magic or some weapon to triumph, not all the time anyway. He used what he was given. But maybe that was because his magic was dangerous, and not just to his opponents, so he had to learn differently.

No it looked like Athene could be that unlucky, the eternal senshi wasn’t going away, had in fact jumped down in mixture of white, black and orange. The dark-haired senshi blinked – actually the white looked a lot like armour of some kind. He hadn’t realised that senshi could get armour. He bit his lip slightly at the older senshi’s lecture, still gripping onto the trash can lid. “But the only thing that’s important is that I dust the youma right. Why should it matter how I dust it.” Besides he was horrible at punching things – like seriously terrible. He kept his voice quiet, trying his best not to let his irritation at the ‘dude’ comment show.

"You'll look like a wuss," Chaonis grunted in response.
As if that was what made a senshi, and what kept them alive. Looking cool when they were fighting. Really, Chaonis believed in the strength every senshi was given, and felt like they should all just learn how to punch and kick and they would be a lot better off. Far less of them getting themselves killed in stupid fights they should have been able to get out of, at least.
Chaonis hated when he heard about or saw other senshi die.
It wasn't out of sadness or a feeling that a life was lost. It was a restlessness inside him that was stirred each time, like he had somehow witnessed a failure in something so fundamental. If he knew about it, it had to be easy. He needed to get out there and show them all how it was done.
But they had to listen, too.
"You were given power for a reason, you shouldn't p***y out and hide from it. Use what you have, yes, but why are you acting like you're made out of paper and afraid to get dirty? Dusting youma is a piece of cake."

“I guess that’s easy enough for you to say” although Athene spoke the words in his usual quiet voice, there was a frosty undertone to the spoken words and his eyes narrowed slightly from behind his glasses. After all the eternal senshi came complete with armour and probably had some sort of senshi ability that worked on tap – unlike his, which despite working better – still seemed to have a mind of its own. “I…” The words he was going to speak tailed off as the youma decided to charge in his direction – okay so maybe it was still upset at having gotten caught up in his bead barrier earlier. Holding up the trash can lid to swing out at the thing, maybe some of the eternal senshi's comments had hit home, because at pretty much the last minute Athene tried to kick out at the youma instead. Okay it was a pretty pathetic kick – the dark-haired senshi was about as good at kicking things as he was at punching them – but it was an attempt at a kick nonetheless.

Chaonis was very used to attitude. His own and getting it from people he pissed off. He grinned at the other and shook his head, shrugging as languidly as if the conversation were casual and calm.
Chaonis never used his magic, if only because it tended to destroy everything around him whenever he did so. He had more luck with his eternal powers, but it was still very destructive and not something he wanted to risk using all the time if he could avoid it.
Chaonis looked at the youma as it turned toward them. Rude, interrupting a conversation. Like Chaonis knew anything about manners. He grinned and clenched his fist, then looked at Athene.
The kick, at least, landed, and the youma stumbled. Chaonis moved in to punch it again, packing a good wallop in his punches. The youma had no chance, after the beating it had taken already, against two senshi and burst into dust at the last two hits.
The Senshi of Danger laughed, folding his arms over his chest.
"See?" he said, as if his point had totally just been made.

Athene’s kick, had surprisingly (at least to the dark-haired senshi) not only connected, but had been enough to make the youma stumble, however it was the eternal senshi’s punches that delivered the blow to turn the thing into dust. He looked confused as the taller senshi started laughing, not sure what was so funny. Then again if he was being honest Athene wasn’t really too sure what to make of the eternal senshi who’d first told him that he was on his own against the youma and them punched the thing – more than once – in between calling him a wuss. “Thank you for your help back there” he told the other senshi at last. It wasn’t really the dark-haired senshi’s most gracious thank you – the eternal senshi’s earlier comments still rankled – but the other senshi had helped out and Athene felt that it was only right that he acknowledge it. It occurred to the dark-haired senshi that he had no idea who the eternal senshi was so he added "I'm Sailor Athene by the way." Who knew – maybe the eternal senshi would let him have a name back.
