x The night was cool and clear, as many such nights were during the summer months over the Greater Herd Plains. The stars winked down from above in laughter, the moon obscured by thin clouds, their edges limned silver by its own light. A soft breeze sang through the lush grasses, whispering at the future to come; foals to be born, river to run deep and cool, and war to come from over the far horizon. The grass would be flattened, stained red with blood, the wind would fade from gentle laughter to high, shrieking cries as the days wore on. The rivers would be choked with swollen bodies, the bugs feasting not on flowers, but on rotting corpses. But the wind and stars knew that would be in several months. For now, they were content to enjoy the false peace while it lasted, while they still had the luxury and time to take comfort from it.

A faint presence stirred among the clouds within the moon, causing the light to falter, be broken upon the land in shadows. The far-off sound of wingbeats could be heard down below on the plains if one were to listen. And like a single drop of rain, a salty tear fell from the skies, plummeting down thousands of feet to the rolling expanse of grass below.

It was a rare occurrence, such a calm and peaceful night. A young mare thought, her bright blue eyes gazing out from the safety of her forest home out onto the great plains before her, beckoning her out to it's silky grass and gentle moonlight glow. Such a beautiful night lay before her, yet her fearful heart gripped her tightly keeping her rooted just inside the tree line. She'd been lazing around most of the day for Eckar once again in their hiding place, waiting for his return to tell her the coast was clear. But he'd never returned tonight and she'd wandered off in hopes of catching him along the way, though it only brought her here. To this tempting grassland. Furred ears tipping back as she sniffed at the air softly, trying to detect any traces of the two-legged people, and pleased when none were in the general vicinity before finally building the courage to leave her cover.

Softly walking out towards the center of the grassy field, her tufted tail swayed gently behind her with each step as her horn glowed with a low pale light that mimicked the moons alluring glow, and lighting her path dimly. What a beautiful night, Avari thought as she came to a halt in the grass hushing the the quiet sound of her steps as she lifted her eyes to gaze at the beautiful moon. When curiously she became aware of a light sound coming from what seemed like far above. The dull sound of wings, churning the air harshly and cutting the reassuring silent that had called out to her so sweetly. Searching the skies out of curiosity, she was stunned with a raindrop hit her square on the nose. Startled a step back she quickly ducked her head to her knee, rubbing the spot lightly as she spoke out to herself in confusion.

"Rain, on such a clear night? How odd.."

x The presence within the clouds stirred, a faint tugging at its heart. What was once before only a sheer moisture in the air coalesced into a spirit, a heart, a being. The presence felt itself become solid, felt the cool air run fingers through its fur, felt feathers on its wings ruffle in the wind, felt the ones on its tail streaming behind it. It opened clear blue eyes, like the heart of a glacier, and then there was a sudden feel of plummeting, of falling, accelerating as its mass and the gravity of this new world carried it downwards. The wind in his ears whistled, and he felt his new heart begin to race, to beat faster and faster. Some deep thing within him, some deep-rooted instinct and fear, told him that falling was not good, that this mortal body would be splintered, shattered, and broken. And while he himself could survive that, this body would not. And there was something -- someone -- he had to find first.

With a sound in the back of his throat, the being extended its wings a hundred feet from the hard ground coated in grass, and with a loud snap, he leveled out as the wind caught beneath his wings, streaming around them. His eyes shining with joy, the being stretched his appendages, shifting his center of mass to the left, his right wing pointed towards the stars and the left towards the ground. He looked down beneath him as he circled slowly in the air, his fur shining with an ethereal, other-worldly glow. A dim glow caught his gaze and held it as he slowly, fluidly dropped lower and lower, and after focusing his Sight, he saw the bigger, brighter glow at its heart that showed it was a creature like him. The word came unbidden in his mind: Azrein. It felt right, its meaning in the Spirit World 'one pure of body, of mind, of heart, and of half its soul.' Nodding to himself, the Azrein shook his head slightly, clearing his Inner Eye, and once more all he saw were the dark, rolling plains and the dim glow of the mare's horn.

With a sound like wind in the treetops, he landed gracefully on the ground, the lush grass beneath his golden, cloven hooves giving slightly. He folded his wings to his ribs, flicking his long ears back before lowering his head to the mare. He stood unmoving, in a non-threatening posture to these pure creatures, these Azrein, and waited for her to acknowledge him. For to him, in the Spirit World, if one did not wish to speak with or engage in action with another, they simply ignored them and went about their business. It was not deemed rude -- on the contrary, actually. If one were to speak to another without waiting ten heartbeats for the other to state, "I See you," then they were being unspeakably crass and rude.

The being raised his head, the bells dangling on leather thongs from his pure-white antlers chiming softly in the wind. His antlers seemed to glow, like the mare's horn, but one could not be sure if it were simply a reflection of the moonlight, or if it were something within him, within his spirit, that made them do so. But if the being were to guess, it would most certainly be the latter. He looked around with confused blue eyes at this new, clean world, and hoped the mare would notice him, if she were not on more pressing business. He had no idea where he was, or where he was going. He just knew that he felt a tug on his heartstrings, making him want to do nothing more than fly to the east to whatever it was that awaited him there.

He turned his gaze back to the Azrein and shifted his weight, cocking his back leg comfortably. He met the mare's gaze and offered a gentle smile when their eyes met.

There was shock in her bright eyes, shock, confusion and fear. It was almost as if the clouds above her wanted to fall and swallow her and this valley in it's wake as they began to tremble and ultimately burst. Dancing away from a point in the sky leaving haunting streams of clouds in various directions. Heart beat quickening as the young mare took another step backwards before freezing one hoof raised slightly off the grass, her instincts telling her to book at the first sign of danger, but her curiosity holding her still. It wasn't long before the dark speck began to grow in size as it raced down towards the earth. Towards her general vicinity.

"Great mother, what is that."

She choked out fearfully, her eyes widening considerably as her body trembled lightly. Her peace was gone, as the clouds continued their movement streaming across the bright moon in various places, dimming the light across the field. Though this darkened enough to bring the figure clearer into view just as it's massive wings spread out, catching itself on the air, and startling the fearful mare frozen even more. Only watching the graceful decent with her wide eyes for what felt like a lifetime before the large creature, who she just now noticed was a Azrein like herself, finally came to a quiet drop before her staring down at her with blue eyes not unlike herself. Tail curling ever so slightly beneath her, she finally dropped her hoof to the ground a step back s his head bowed in what she assumed was a greeting.

Gradually her horn lost it's magical glow as Avari inclined her head ever to slightly, keeping her eyes locked on him as she backed away a step, her heart continuing to pound. All her time on these new lands she'd never encountered another Azrein aside from her companion, always avoiding them from the shadows, and though this one didn't appear to have an malice intent toward her she couldn't will herself to relax under his gaze. Turning her head to the side, the mare continued to study him out of the corner of her eyes as she tried to control the terror building inside of her. Oh Great mother why wasn't Eckar here when she needed him, why was she left her alone in the presence of the winged being. He never said anything, which confused her greatly causing her ears to pin back and her to clear her throat as quietly as she could.

"E-excuse me.."

Avari murmured, her tail curling gently around her hind leg as she attempted to comfort herself with it's soft presence. Taking a moment to gather her courage to speak once again she paused all her thoughts as the soft twinkle that came from his horns. Blinking her eyes, she turned her gaze up to their magnificence form, her ears twitching in their pulled back position. Eyes dilating as her mind flashed back briefly as she arrived at the pens, the sound of chains and terrified horses everywhere. Brows pulling together, she shook the memory away and frowned up at him. Bells, had man touched this horse? Sniffing the air lightly, she found slight peace when she couldn't catch anything. Tipping her head down, she felt the rope around her neck rub uncomfortably against her chest and wondered what had happened to him. Lowering her eyes to run along the rest of his appearance she was caught in awe at the sheer size of him. He was a glow under the light of the moon, everything shimmered like new. No, he did not appear to have had the life she and her sisters had, but after that fall she felt compelled to ask if all was well.

"That was quite a drop.. Is everything okay?"

x The stallion shook his head to clear it, the bells hanging from his antlers chiming. Blue eyes met the mare's gaze before traveling down to rest at the noose around her neck for a moment. A frown creased his brows before he looked back up, and he offered her what he hoped was an apologetic smile. "My most sincere apologies for startling you if I did, unicorn. I did not intend to cause you any fright." Varian looked around himself and his eyes began to recognize areas of the land that his father had once known so well. The small part inside of his heart that was Valdien wanted to sing with joy that his son could see the lands he had so cherished.

Snorting slightly, Varian shook off the feeling of mixed elation and grief within his chest as he answered the mare's question. "Yes, quite alright, though I assure you, I was rather scared myself. Do you happen to know where I am?" He knew he was on a floating island named simply 'The Isle of Azreth.' But he felt a strange pulling in his heart to travel east as fast as his wings could carry him. His nostrils flared, a long elk ear swiveling back to listen to any noises that might be out of the ordinary. Like his father before him, Varian had a basic, instinctual need to protect any he came across. "I find myself wanting to go to the eastern horizon, but I cannot quite know where I'm going if I don't know where I am." He smiled apologetically before starting, realizing he had been incredibly rude.

"My deepest apologies. My name is..." What was his name? His father's was Valdien, he knew that. But what would his father have named him, what name did the Good Spirits want for him? The answer came to him in a stirring of the wind across the plains, a faint whisper. "Varian. Lord Varian, Son of Valdien." It felt right. Something within his breast clicked, and he knew there was a broken, Shattered two-legged waiting for him to the east, though not even the man himself knew. Varian could feel his heart torn asunder, could feel the grief the man -- the boy, really -- clutched to himself in absence of Valdien. With an effort, the stallion hastily put up mental walls; much more of that and he would break down himself, and then he could not fulfill his duty as he was meant to -- either to the boy or the realm. "I would be most honored to learn your own, my lady, if you would be obliging to give it."

Ears flicking back at the crisp ringing of bells, Avari stared up through the stallions smile feeling a faint tug to return it, though her face remained unchanged. Fear settling done as he spoke, the mare was left instead to listen through his apology in mild curiosity as she gazed up at his face, studying his oddities, and watching the mixed emotions that played out on it. Turning her head to glance around them she felt a frown tip the corners of her lips, was the fields disappointing to him? Surely there was nothing disappointing to see in such a clear and beautiful night. It was only when he answered her question that her eyes and attention were drawn back to his form.

"Where you are?" She questioned in thought before a sad smile crossed her face she she sent her gaze back to the forest tracking back her steps to locate their exact spot, before opening her mouth to speak her answer. Though his next few words closed it briefly and she let out a quiet laugh, shaking her head lightly. "I don't see any reason why you'd want to go there. Nothing but danger out that way.." Turning her heads off in the direction they were speaking about she narrowed her eyes and let out a huff of air through her nose. They were more common out there, the two legged, the devils. Shifting her weight on her hooves, Avari lifted both her ears and eyes as he introduced himself and gave a soft nod.

"Greetings Lord Varian, I am known simply by Avari, daughter to the late Rana." She spoke, her smile faltering ever so slightly as she spoke her mothers name, but the pain quickly passed, having been buried long ago when she'd been taken from her. Though whether her mother still lived or not she feared she would never know, but in her mind she was already gone from this world. Straightening her thoughts she inclined her head in greeting, something her terror earlier had barred her from doing completely before she returned to their previous topic of where they were.

"I must advise you to avoid those lands Lord Varian." Avari warned, her ears twitching as her blue eyes drifted quickly in the direction before returning to his form. "Monsters live there. Monsters that will surely snatch away a stallion like yourself." Anger flitting through her eyes, she instead chose to walk a few steps around to his left, before turning her body to face him. She couldn't let someone prance out to those lands without a warning, it would be like sending lambs to the slaughter. "They crave horses for their gardens and horns for their remedies.. I know they would try and horde such grand ones as yours. But these woods are safe, hardly any two-legged walk here as far as I've noticed. The forest is protected, guarded over by the Great mother." A genuine smile lit her face at the mention of her deity as she gazed at him, before offering the protection her and Eckar had found to him. "You should stay here, I wouldn't feel right with myself sending you off to the life I was lucky enough to escape.. If your mind cannot be swayed I will take you as far as my mind will allow.."

x A frown marred the stallion's equine features, his head tilting to the side. He winced as he felt a lance of white-hot anger penetrate his mind, and he stood staring for a moment at the unicorn. He couldn't believe such a pretty-looking Azrein could despise something so wholly. But he knew that the humans -- well, not all humans, anyway -- weren't bad at all. His father's memories attested to that fact. Every single Azrein who was Bonded had been more than happy with the people they had Chosen, and they wouldn't go back and change a single thing, even if they had a thousand chances to turn back time. So why was this mare so utterly against the humans? Varian felt the anger swirling around in his breast, tinged with a dark, ugly green of fear and a sickly yellow of horror.

With a small trumpet, Varian shook his head violently from side to side, snapping his wings out as he staggered sideways a few steps, the tips of his cloven hooves making pitted holes in the soft earth beneath him. He let out an alpha-stallion's scream -- a sound that bit at the flight instinct's heels in every single mare, foal, and stallion -- and reared up onto his hind legs, blue eyes wild, unfocused, wings flapping wildly as he tried to escape the maddening fear beginning to grip him. Calm down! You're in a field! Spirits, what in the Hells is going on?! With an elongated grunt, the stallion tipped over backwards, landing hard the base of his wings, antlers hitting the ground and gouging deep furrows, bells jangling madly. He stared up at Anari, his chest heaving, and saw the fear he felt reflected in her own eyes. He held her gaze, trying to use it as a focus to pull himself out of -- of whatever this was, and suddenly, he was enveloped by darkness and a bone-deep cold.

I could smell humans. Old, dirty, sweaty, smelling like horses -- not Azrein, but the normal ones. My mother trumpeted a shrill scream into the night, telling us to run, to move, to fly as fast as our small legs could carry us. My sister scrambled as a man came near us with a rope, my mother having galloped off to draw the two-leggers away from us. She bit down on his hand, hard, eliciting a grunted curse and a cudgel to the back of her head. I wanted to scream, to run, to fight, but I was so utterly terrified that I couldn't do anything but stand there and shake.
I felt a warm wetness seeping down my legs, and all I wanted to do was close my eyes and curl up against Mom's belly, her scent and warmth like a blanket, keeping me safe. Instead, the men with the ropes came, throwing them on us. One caught and held fast around my neck, and myself and my sister Dal were forcibly hauled into the back of a wagon. It stank of fear and feces. Somewhere along the way, we picked up a colt, but I don't really remember much of it. All I wanted to do was see my Mom, to see Nim again. I spent those weeks fettered and shackled by not only physical chains, but those of fear and terror as well.
Then came the auction house. A flurry of scents and smells, of blood and sweat and sickness, and I couldn't take it anymore. I had to do something, anything, to make this stop, no matter what it was...

With a gasp, Varian rolled over onto his side, shaking, tears streaming down his face, mud and grass plastered all over his long fur, his once-flawless mane and parti-colored feathers. The stallion staggered first to his knees, then his hooves, using his wings for balance. With a reassuring nicker to the mare, he stumbled over to her, extending his wings to mantle them over and around her, placing his arched neck over her own. He wanted nothing more than to keep her safe, to protect her, to show her that humans weren't all evil. But she could never understand that, and he accepted it. He felt her delicate frame quaking beneath his wings, and -- still shaken up, himself -- he pulled back slightly, blue gaze roving over her features, though this time he didn't chance looking into her eyes for more than three seconds.

"Avari? My Lady? I'm alright, really. Nothing hurt me, nothing bad happened, I just . . . I know what you went through and it scared me at first is all." He was attempting to reassure her, but Spirits, how had that even happened? He'd never done anything like that in the Spirit World -- the Afterlife. He had felt her fear, her anger, and then he had freaked out, fallen over, and tried to focus by watching her eyes and then . . . then he had been sucked into her past, it seemed. Varian gave himself a good, solid shake from nose to wingtips to tail feathers, grounding himself in reality, in the here and now, and he frowned down at the unicorn. She still hadn't responded. "Avari, please. Answer me, ladylove. What's wrong?" He was beginning to grow concerned.

With a start, he realized what had just happened. He had only heard about it in the Spirit World, and the Soul Guide had said it was so rare that not much was know about it. He had called it a Soulgaze, wherein if the one with the power looks into another's eyes for seven seconds without looking away, each sees the other for who they really are -- they knew everything about them: their past, their secrets, their fears, aspirations, their very soul. Oh, Gods. Oh, Gods. That meant that she had seen what he had gone through.

Every second of agonizing pain while he felt his father's prolonged death from the Spirit World, all the sadness and grief within him, the feelings from the Shattered King, and the Spirit Web within his mind that brought him all the emotions of every Azrein on the Isle. Varian felt his ribs expand and contract as his breathing quickened. He let out a soft whinny and lowered his head, blowing breath into the mare's ears and nostrils to try to bring her out of dwelling on his life, both this one and his father's old one. Avari, his voice was gentle, yet commanding: the voice of a God. "Avari, you need to return to this world. There are those who need you here -- what would Eckar do if you stayed in your head for the rest of your years? You must come back to me, now, and you must put aside all you have felt and experienced through me, as I have through you. We know each other now more intimately than dam and foal, than lovers and family. You must return to me, to the here and now, and not dwell on what was once the here and now." He paused, closing bright blue eyes as he mantled his wings around her, encasing her entirely.

His voice became deeper, more rich, like heavy fog on a summer night. He put the Call into his words, twining it through each rise and fall, every syllable, slightly changing the cadence of his cant. "As the God of Duty and Sacrifice, Avari, I Call you back to Duty. Do not tarry, do not delay, and come back to this world, whole of mind, heart, soul, and body. I Call you to return, Avari. Come back to me now." Varian let out a breath, feeling as if he had deflated. Even though he didn't know about any of his powers, he could never forget the Call. It was something that every Deity had, something that each of them could do provided the situation fit what they reigned. He would need to recover for several hours once the crisis had passed, but he needed to protect this sweet mare, needed to save her from both his memories and from herself.

He beseeched the mare, in just his normal tone, sounding nothing more than weary. "Come, Avari, it's time to leave that place."

Terror, pure terror struck clean through the young unicorn the moments her last words were spoken. He'd reacted to violently it'd simply startled her at first, but at that scream she found the world moved in a blur as her instincts kicked in to cover for the actions her mind couldn't form together. She'd searched for him in this brief moment, her eyes catching and questioning his before she felt her self stumble backwards, overcome with so many things she couldn't understand before her whole body froze as they became clearer. Hitting her square in the chest she felt a familiar yet horrifyingly new sense of pain, a blinding crippling pain that filled her being to the core threatening to pull her apart bit by bit. Her mind had tried to aid her, to push the foreign thoughts out but she was soon too lost to find her way out, the sensations alone overwhelming her. Eyes staring off blankly, her whole body quaked as she became lost to the world around her. Images turned over in her mind too fast to study, but slow enough to sit right on the edge of vision, threatening to burn themselves permanently in a new mind. Many things she'd never wished to see were suddenly thrown on herself in a moments time. She'd seen horrors in her life, Unicorns treated the worst ways, gutted and stolen, horns snapped off while their legs were broken and caught in bear traps as they were left to lie in wait for deaths cold touch. But nothing like what she was lost in. Each flash brought new and unwanted sensations. Soul shattering loss and grief, so much she felt she would drown in it's wake.

Stomach clenching uneasily Avari stood unwavering as her lost mind was brought to the attention of the stallion. His words fell on deaf ears without so much as a twitch of her ear. She was overwhelmed, the mares mind simply wanting to shut down to drown out every emotion that stabbed at it and gripped her heart so tightly it threatened to squeeze it until it ruptured. Tears built up in her unseeing eyes, as she felt herself begin to buckle under the weight of a burden she wasn't meant to carry. Knees shaking, it wasn't until his low voice called out with such conviction that she was unable to ignore it any longer. With each word she was stripped of one of the emotions, mind freed until she was left with her own familiar pain and anger and loss. As she was brought back to her mind, she felt her knees crumple underneath her, bringing her body quickly to the ground. Avari found it hard to catch her breath between the thick sobs that left her shivering body. Ears and tail pulled close to her body she buried her nose between her knees and simply let out the many tears she'd manage to hold in most of her years, unable to store them in the corner of her mind as it tried to block out all she'd been forced to see and feel. Her horn instinctually beginning to glow in an attempt to heal her wounds, even though the ones she bared were unreachable to it's soft glow, giving her head a quick shake as he spoke she found herself unable to get up or even answer him. Leave? Where would she go? Leaving the forest had been a mistake, she should always stay in it's comforting shadows. Her forest would provide and shelter her from all this pain. But even now, with her eyes closed she could see the images. Why any horse would subject themselves to such pain she couldn't know. Bonded to humans, what an idiotic idea, they only brought pain with every step they took on this world, her mind snapped as her tears began to subside and she was left a shaking mess.

"W-wha.. Why.." Avari began before she cut herself off unable to think up a question for what just happened. Lifting her head to glance up at him she felt her heavy, uneven breaths shake her sides as she shook her head again attempting to clear her mind once more and still her racing heart. How had that even happened, everything had been fine moments before. Ears ringing with words that went unheard while she was lost, the unicorn tried to sort them together to learn what had happened for herself but only bits and pieces drifted to the front, unable to be pieced together. Shakily she attempted to command her legs to stand, but at most managed to wedge her front legs up under her before slipping down to her prior position. Their shivering unable to hold her weight.

"Am I crazy?" She whispered under her breath, her eyes seeking his in question, as she was unable to piece together what happened herself. Sure she'd had small flashbacks to what happened when she was younger now and again, but nothing, never anything like that..

x Varian dropped to his knees when Avari faltered, mantling his wings over her once more, protecting her, sheltering her from all she had experienced from his thoughts. Gently, he tilted his head, clacking his antlers softly against her horn, the bells chiming quietly from the motion. "No, little one. You're not crazy." The stallion's voice was laced with pain, guilty that he had made her go through his memories. With every breath he took, he felt the pain and agony of his father's tortured death -- the price he had to pay for coming to this world. "I'm so, so sorry for putting you through that. What just happened is called a Soulgaze, and I . . . I had not known that I possessed the ability."

Nor did he know that he had the gift of Empathy and the Call. What else had the Good Spirits burdened him with, he wondered. Grimacing, the stallion nuzzled her cheek in a gesture of comfort, his large body pressed against her, giving her a much-needed measure of solace. "I never intended for that to happen, but I deeply regret it. No one mortal -- even an Azrein -- should know what happens behind the eyes of a God." The words did not come out as haughty, but instead they were twined with so much grief, so much guilt, that the wind itself almost seemed to weep. "You will never forget the Soul of another once you have experienced it through a Gaze, Avari, but in a few moments, the rawness of your mind and heart will scab over. While it will still be uncomfortable to think upon it, you shall not have any more physical pain." No, only the mental wounds would last. The Deity cursed himself.

He should've known that something like this might happen -- but how could he? He wasn't yet even an hour old, but the knowledge he carried made him feel old and tired. "You may remain in this glade, but now that a Gaze has happened, the pure energies released from such a powerful magic will call entities here. I would humbly ask that you travel with me, for a few days, at least, until things have settled down here." He didn't want to tear her away from her home, but for her safety, it was his duty to make the hard choices. "While you're with me, I shall protect you with everything I have, with everything I am, and I will not let harm befall you." He rubbed his cheek against hers before leaning away from her, holding her gaze. Once two parties have Soulgazed, it cannot happen again, so there was some comfort in that, at any rate. "I swear it, Avari. I will see you returned safely back here to your home after three rises of the sun. But until then, we must get far from here, in the event the Six or the two-leggers allied with them come seeking out the powerful disturbance I have called."

The stallion bowed his head, ashamed of his thoughtless actions. "I am sorry."

Basically, because the Soulgaze is a power of the Spirits, the energies it releases when initiated can be felt for miles and miles. Those who use dark magic can use it as a homing beacon of sorts, and can follow it back to its source.
Poor V feels so terrible and guilty. D: And so confused. xD

Avari was silent through most of his explanation, her eyes simply searching his face in vain for any lies he may throw her way. There were so many things she wished to find fault in, but the words rang true with simple truth, and the pain and apology in his eyes couldn't be denied. Dropping her blue eyes from her study, Avari shifted, leaning her body against his warm side she focused his steady breathing trying to match it with her own. She was thankful for his wings and took in the great comfort in the shelter the provided her in this moment. She had felt too exposed, stuck on the ground in the middle of an open field. But the light shadows being cast over her, and the smaller space reminded her greatly of her dark forest, and began to work to calm her racing heart.

Turning her head into the long mane down his chest, her horn carefully resting just above as the unicorn closed her eyes, ears listening as he explained something she'd never expected to exist in this world. Soulgazing, what a terrifying power to wield. The words turned over and over in her mind as it attempted to block out what she'd experienced by filling itself with new information, but every pause turned it back to moments ago. Breath coming out in soft huffs against his neck, she frowned. The pain would fade she'd be reassured, but at this moment she was worried the experience wouldn't close and leave her mind as easy. She was content to rest in this spot for a moment, as her panic ebbed and left her eyes feeling tired, but his information about her only safe haven becoming dangerous caused her to lift her head from it's prior position and look up at him with confusion catching his gaze as he leaned away to search for hers.

"Leave?" Avari questioned, as her eyes turned to glance off towards the forest she'd emerged from earlier. She'd known nothing of the war that now threatened these lands prior to this meeting, but now the mere mention of these beings called the six frightened her. Even more then the two leggers who were mentioned after. Nodding her head reluctantly she let out a shaky breath. "I.." She started before pausing to collect her thoughts, her ears tipping back as her heart tightened in fear at the thought of having to leave the only area she'd found safe. "I guess I really have no other choice but to leave.." The mare felt a shudder run through her body as the images of what the evil band of horses were really capable of flashed through her mind and she slowly lifted to her shaky hooves. "I never wish to run into one of them. By the Earth mother, I hope Eckar doesn't return anytime soon to search for me." She felt a pang of worry for her traveling companion, but he'd been coming and going from their temporary home that she hadn't seen him for a few days already. Surely he was safe wherever he was going.

Glancing at the god beside her, the mare forced a small smile to her lips, though the worry never faded from her tired eyes.
"But where would we go in the meantime?" She questioned as her eyes moved once more to her home.

x Varian's heart clenched at the forlorn tone of the mare's voice. He bumped his muzzle against her jawline before rising gracefully to his feet, giving his wings a shake to loosen their joints. He felt old and tired, and he had barely been on this world for an hour. His nostrils flared as he let out a gentle sigh.

"All I know is that we must go, Avari." He caressed her name, hoping to offer her comfort in the midst of the doubt and confusion in her breast. "We will travel to the monument of the Fallen, the giant arch to the west of the castle. We will spend the night there, and then tomorrow we will discuss where we can go stay for a few days until things return to normal here." He lowered his head and gave her a gentle yet strong nudge as she began to rise, helping her to her feet. He gave his head a shake, bells chiming before looking off to the east, to where their destination lay on the horizon. "It should only take us a few hours to reach the Arch, even at a slow trot. I do not wish for either of us to tax ourselves after what we've just experienced."

Varian knew he could handle a flat-out gallop straight to the arch, but he didn't want little Avari to strain herself after what she went through. He wanted to get her far enough away to where the Six's allies couldn't find them, and he knew that there was plenty of natural shelter in the area where the Arch was. They could put their backs up against one of the cliff walls there, or even find an empty cave to stay the night in. The stallion lifted his chin, blue eyes searching the sky, noting the building clouds. The wind smelled like rain, and he knew it wasn't too far off. Perhaps they could make it to shelter before the downpour began. Regardless of where they stopped, he would watch over Avari all through the night to ensure that nothing troubled her.

Turning his gaze once more back to the pale mare, he pressed his wings to his flanks in an absent gesture. "Do you have anything you wish to take from this place, Avari? It will be days before you return, and if the Six's allies do come here, they might trash the place seeking us. If you have any mementos or things of value, gather them quickly. I will be right beside you, so you need not fear while you do so, my lady."

x Varian glanced back at the woods as Avari moved off into the night before trotting forward to catch up with her. He had wondered about the rope on her neck, but it was far from tactful to ask about it. He assumed it was the same one that the men had taken her with, but she or another Azrein could've gotten it off long ago. Perhaps it was a way of remembering everything she had lost from that time in her life, or maybe it was held fast by magic. Either way, Varian wouldn't offer to take it off unless she broached the subject herself.

The stallion fell into step beside her, going along at a gentle walk for now so that they might reserve their strength for when the land became flat and they could increase their pace. He walked forward with his left wing draped over her back in a protective gesture, hoping she would be more at ease because of it. The bells on his antlers chimed with every other step he took, fading off into the cool night as the breeze carried the gentle sound away from them.

"No, darling. Most two-leggers are asleep at night. Only Azrein visit it, as it's fairly far off from both the castle and from Avandere proper." He didn't know how he knew the answer; the words had simply come to him, but they rang true in his mind. "But we will bed down in one of the caves that litter the area around it. It smells like a storm on the wind, and I want you out of the rain and someplace warm and dry when it finally falls." The stallion smiled warmly down at her, though his blue eyes were sad. "I will keep watch through the night, so that no one will trouble us while we rest. In the morning, we will figure out where to go from there. If you'd like, we can find a place further from the city, someplace where humans never venture."

Hearing his steps fall in time with her own when the stallion reached her side, left the unicorn thankful that he didn't push their pace. Though she was a swift runner, her legs felt cold and stiff at this moment, something that left her quite uncomfortable. But even this short distance they'd walked has already began to slowly work to warm her muscles. It was strange she'd never felt so emotionally drained. Yet Avari still felt a genuine smile cross her face when she felt the air stir across her back followed by a gently brush of his primary feathers as his wing extended over her. Providing the small sense of security it had granted her moments earlier, and for that she was grateful.

His words allowed a bit of her stress off of her with a soft sigh, but with each step away from the one place she'd called home for an extended period of time she felt a bit of paint and worry catch her heart. She didn't want to be lost in this land again, and she feared that even with this new God watching over she wouldn't be able to sleep. The feelings of their soulgaze lurked on the edge of her conscience as if waiting for her tired body to fall asleep and take hold, it left her feeling anxious. Shifting her steps slightly, she moved closer to him as the dark thoughts threatened to resurface. Her mind focusing on the soft noise of his bells.

She felt the need to talk after he's words had stopped, an deep urge to keep them speaking as if the noise was the only thing keeping her from delving into her mind and experiencing the fear and panic she was desperately holding back. "Do you really think there is a single place on this isle where two-legs don't tread?" Tossing her head quickly to loop her bangs over the curved horn after her nervous question, she felt s shiver go through her spine when a cold wind-draft cut through the air speaking of the rain that would be biting at their heels during this drop and solidifying his prior statement.

Varian felt the warmth of the mare as she moved closer to him, her shoulder bumping into the bottom of his own. He felt a small smile curve his features. She was tiny, so delicate, like a songbird, a dove, or a sparrow. He felt the smile widen. Little Sparrow. Compared to his size, she certainly was small, but he figured around most Azrein she was of relative height. He was almost the size of a draft, only being a single hand shorter than most of them. The stallion felt a shudder pass through her as a draft of wind raced across the plains, and he belt his wing at the joint, drawing her closer to him as his wing wrapped around her left side, blocking the wind from biting at her flanks.

Tilting his antlered head to look down at Avari as they walked, Varian nodded slightly. "Of course. There are places humans don't go on the Isle. Generally, they're all clustered in cities, towns, and villages. They're mostly like us, wherein they want to be around others, their herd if you will. However some, like us, go off on their own because they don't like the alpha of their herd, or they just feel out of place." He lifted his right wing in a slight shrug. "Humans have a lot of common with us, Avari, even though it's hard to realize. Some of them are very, very bad, like those Azrein that join the Six and kill their own kind because they can. And just as we do, they do. The humans have some that kill others for things like money or jealousy, or even just because they enjoy it." He paused to let that sink in before continuing.

"But those are far less common than you would think. Most humans are good of heart and good of soul. They make mistakes sometimes, and everyone has their faults, but a lot of them would lock the men who did what they did to your family and others like you in a stone and metal box called a gaol, and would keep them there for years if not life. The majority of humans care deeply for others of their kind, but more than that, care about Azrein like us, and even horses and lesser animals that cannot communicate as we do. But that is only on this Isle, Avari." Varian hoped that by speaking to her, he could not only educate and possibly assuage her fears at least a bit, but also to keep her from her own thoughts on their Soulgaze. "There's a huge land that seems endless beneath the Isle, called the Lands Below. Down there, a lot of the people do not care as much as the two-leggers up here do. They would just as soon kill all the beavers in the river to make their mill than move the mill a half-mile downstream so they won't disrupt the lives of the beavers. The men up here would rather go out of their way to make sure the other things living here are not inconvenienced, as they realize that the smaller creatures do not understand why their lives are turned upside-down."

Varian swiveled his ears, Listening to the Wind, making sure there were no others around besides themselves as they traveled. All was clear for the moment, so he went back to talking. "The King of this Isle is that kind of man. I know it is hard to believe, but the King himself would have rather been taken and hurt, and his own family killed by those men than you. He sees every Azrein on the Isle -- even the bad ones, for some reason that's utterly beyond my comprehension -- as almost sacred, as something that must be loved and cherished." Varian laughed; a rich, smooth sound. "He is our voice, and the voice of all the small animals on his Isle. Without him, Avari, the Six would have already taken the Greater Herd and all of the Azrein not aligned with them, and would have tortured, raped, and abused them all because of their defiance."

Varian's voice became hard, and his eyes glinted with the chill of the heart of an iceberg. "The Six are a disgrace to our kind, and they do not deserve to be called Azrein. They would just as soon kill us than be within a mile of us, Avari. If you ever see an Azrein that is not myself or someone you know, and something just feels . . . wrong about them, I want you to swear to me that you will run, run as far and as fast as your hooves will carry you. And the moment you start running, I want you to Call out to me in your mind -- now that we have Soulgazed, we are connected. And I swear to you that if it is within my power, I will fly as hard and as fast as I can to protect you." Varian stopped and turned so his body was perpendicular to Avari's, blocking her path. "Promise me, little Sparrow." The stallion spoke around a lump in his throat, genuinely surprised that just the thought of this little mare being in danger make him sick, made him want to protect, to hurt, to kill whoever threatened her. "I could not bear to see you get hurt, Avari."

Varian already cares so much for herrr. > u <
Though I can decide if it's because of her personality, the fact that she was the first Azrein he met, or because of just who and what he is.
