Today wasn't a good day for Sophie. She had to tend to her family's shop by herself today. Of all days it had to be today. Sophie was almost done with a large special project but no, it wouldn't get done today. It was to be a gift for her parents but unless she got nearly no customers there wouldn't be time. Knitting was difficult to do when trying to take care of customers.

There was something she could work on in between the flow of customers. She was spinning a particularly hard to get wool in a stunning blue color. This would make either herself a wonderful scarf or make her some extra coin. Either would be welcome.

The textile shop was of decent size. At the moment she hadn't any customers and was sitting at a spinning wheel near the back of the shop.

A young woman strolled along the ever-crowded street, peering at shop fronts and trying to make a decision. Truth be told, Anna had not been herself of late and by "of late", she meant the past few months. The drastic re-writing of her life had dealt a harsh blow and she had crumbled under the pressure. However, her aunt had not long put up with her self-pity and in truth, even Anna was getting sick of her own company. So she had resolved to pick herself back up and start putting the pieces back together.

Her aunt had started that process by sending Anna out to explore parts of the city and soak in the vivacity. Today, however, the young woman had a mission. What better way to express her resolve to begin anew than to buy herself a new dress? Something fashionable in her new country.

Her eyes lit upon a certain textile shop that looked promising. The name sounded vaguely familiar, too. Perhaps her aunt had mentioned it as one of the more respectable shops?

Sophie had spent her day so far with little customers. So far she had yet to deal with more than one in the shop at a time, a rarity on a busy market day such as today. She was grateful for that though, multiple customers at once was something she didn't have much experience with yet.

She was at her wheel again, close to finishing off the wool she was working with. There was a chime as the shops door opened.

"Oh." That was more to herself than anyone else. Sophie got up from the wheel and walked to the front of the store. "Hello. What can I help you with today. Looking for anything in particular?"

Anna was met with a profusion of color much brighter, richer, and more varied than she was used to. It was one thing to know that this new land was less subdued in fashion than her home country; it was quiet another to be confronted with it so suddenly. She had seen a few ladies on the street in vibrant shades, of course, but never had she seen so many together like this. Was this what she would be confronted with when she was finally ready to face society? Well, she would just have to prepare herself for it. All the more reason to commission that new gown.

Determined grey eyes found the shop girl who appeared.

"Good morning," she replied in her accented Common. Never let it be said that she did not know her manners, no matter the fire that she suddenly found in her heart. Who knew shopping for a dress could kindle such feelings?

"I am looking for a dress. Something fashionable in this country. What can you make?" Though, if the fashions she saw displayed were any indication, she would have to order an entire new wardrobe.

The shop was full of many different textiles. It ranged from fabric, to yarn, to any other material imaginable you could make an outfit with. There were colors from all over the rainbow, as well as more natural colors as well. All in all there was just about anything you could want there.

"A good morning to you too." That was nice, some of the people that could come it ranged in manners.

Sophie thought for a few moments. "We have many fashions, for all sorts of tastes. Any specific colors or styles, or would you just like to see examples of everything?" There were many fashions, many colors. While she waited for her answer she went about and went to grab a book from the back counter, something to write with, and some color examples.

"I am...not familiar with what is good here. I will rely on you to help." She glanced down at her current dress, something clearly made for a much colder country, even though it was a summer fashion. Its color was a subdued fawn, which was pretty enough, but would hardly compete with the jeweled tones worn by so many of the natives.

She considered that last detail. Would she even be comfortable in the brilliant colors of this country? Some seemed so garish. Even if she could bring herself to wear them, it took a certain kind of color to look good with her dark auburn hair. Choosing an appropriate color would take some doing. Better to start with the style.

"Could you show me what the newest fashions are? What is being worn?"

Someone wanted her opinion? She was use to small things but never someone wanting all of her help. Perhaps it was because no one else was working today. "I can do that. This way." Sophie motioned towards her where there was a counter she was setting some items up at.

"Many fashions are ... expectable here. Your current dress is pretty, perhaps a bit heavy looking though." Heavy for the season outside, Sophie wasn't sure how the other girl could wear that without getting hot.

She opened the book up to reveal pictures. "I've drawings of current popular styles. These few pages here." There were quite a few pages actually that held pictures, each page had anywhere from one to three pictures on it. "Colors, you can choose those after. I've a range to choose from as well."

"Hm, these, are probably the most current fashions." Sophie flipped a few pages and came towards the end of the book.

Anna smoothed her hands down her skirt wryly. It was indeed rather heavy for this country's weather, but at least she had said it was pretty. Perhaps she would not have to alter her style as drastically as she had feared.

She moved so she could see the book and studied the pictures. The seamstress was right: there were many fashions to choose from. Some seemed almost familiar and others were completely alien to her. Some she found to be quite pretty and others, well, Anna could not help but wonder who would be caught wearing them.

When they reached the newest styles, she took more time studying them. There were some that she suspected would not flatter her current, too-thin figure. However, there were also a few that she thought might look nice on her, especially after she put back on the weight she had lost in her grief. Even better, she found a few that reminded her of the current fashions in Bellastrana.

"Oh!" she exclaimed upon seeing a design on one of the last pages. "What about this one? What do you think?"

Most of Sophie's customers were the more sensible when it came to fashion. She had only ever served a few that wore the most outrageous of styles and colors. How they thought they looked good, she'd never know.

Luckily being a large city most types of dress were acceptable. Sophie smiled as the other girl made an agreeable sound. Sounds like she had seen something she had liked. Leaning over she looked at the design.

"I think that one would look quite lovely on you." That was honestly said, it was a nice style, not too outrageous and a very popular fashion. "Any others or shall we just concentrate on this one? We could look at some color selections now."

A little rush of relief swept through her at the shopkeeper's words. Although she could not necessarily differentiate the truth from a lie with complete accuracy, Anna was most adept at getting the feel of peoples' hearts. The shopkeeper had a good heart and she felt like an honest person. That, combined with the warmth of her words convinced Anna that she was not telling a meaningless white lie. She genuinely approved of the design.

"We can start here, I think," she replied. If she liked the end result, she could certainly come back for more. Besides, she still had to take inventory of her wardrobe and decide what she could keep and what she would need to change. For now, she just wanted something that she could acceptably wear about town. When she felt up to social functions, she would commission new gowns.

"What colors do you have? I noticed that the people here enjoy dressing like...jungle birds?" Was that the correct phrase? Somehow, it did not sound quite right. "What do you call them? With the long necks and long tails? Proud birds." She sketched the idea in the air.
