Evelyn had come straight home and collapsed on her bed, only sparing a bit of energy to kick a shoe at her sister exiting the small Caffrey home, undoubtedly off to do something illegal in celebration of this weird era of teenage rebellion that was currently going unchecked thanks to the only two members of her immediately family being too busy.

The shoe wasn't aimed very well.

A cell phone ring brought the overworked undergrad out of her haze of wondering why she was even bothering with summer classes, and she blindly reached for her phone and flipped it up with a half asleep, "Hello?" Except it was still ringing. She'd just answered her not-ringing senshi phone and had to actually get up with the most dramatic groan ever to find her normal, people phone.

"Hello? Oh... hi," She quirked an eyebrow at the voice of a only vaguely known classmate needing notes for a lecture they'd missed. Evie was always ready to oblige such requests. "Oh, yeah, bro, I got notes. Just come on over, you can make copies out of my binder."

She didn't even register what date he needed them from. Evie always had all the notes.

Well since she was up anyway she might as well dig up a sandwich while she waited.

Chris hated asking for help, especially when it came to school. But with everything else going on, he was going to be screwed if he didn't at least try to catch back up. His overachieving nature wouldn't allow him to let his GPA drop on account of knight stuff.

And so, after calling one of the better organized girls in his class, Chris was able to set up a meeting with her. At least she would be able to help him out. He already sucked when it came to languages and literature, so any bit of help he could get was welcome, despite the begrudging act he lead.

It didn't take too long to get to her house, thanks to a wonderful little GPS application in his phone. Plug in the address and go, really. It was a lot smaller than he'd imagined it would be, but then again, he was used to houses ten times the size of this one and reminded himself not to make comparisons about how close it was in square feet to the cabana by the pool at his house.

He knocked on the door and smiled sheepishly when she answered. "Hey Evelyn... Sorry again about bothering you," he apologized, his binder of notes tucked under his arm, his shiny pewter car parked along the street.

"Efie," She corrected, with her mouth too full to even really say the syllables. But hey, it wasn't like she was worried about being formal. All but one of her usual braids had been undone and she was down to an awkward ensemble of hipster-chic tunic, sweatpants, and one sock, all lightly dusted in crumbs from the sandwich in her hand. Usually she was pretty neat and tidy but after a long work shift, homework, senshi-ing and more homework, a person just kind of stops caring.

"Evie," She said again after swallowing and clearing her throat as she waved him in, and paused just to see if her wayward sister was anywhere in sight. Nope.

'Cozy' was a word for the house. 'Cramped and overflowing' were probably more accurate.

The kitchen and living room were one clustered space with a sofa crammed in one side and a grand piano that had no business being in such a tiny corner in the other, and kitchen tiles marking where the food preparation area started, though it was buried in files and boxes full of files from her father the good reverend's many ventures.

"Ummm... Oh, here," She needed a moment to pick out which binder was hers and which were just more of her dad's. She grabbed a blue one off the piano covered in photos of the Caffrey-Kavanaugh clan, including more than a few of the late Katelyn Caffrey in full formal dress uniform of the Destiny City Police Department.

Evie just sort of haphazardly tossed the overstuffed binder towards Chris. "I forget which night you needed 'em for, but I haven't missed a night, so." Well she missed one, but so much had happened that she had forgotten there was even a class that day.

"Evie," he amended, with an apologetic smile, before taking a step into the house and following her. She had nice legs. He never really got to get a good look at them aside from when she left the class before he did... She'd probably be a high nine... maybe even a ten in heels.

Er, but that was totally inappropriate... and he quickly stopped checking out her backside and glanced up to look around. It wasn't horrible inside the small house. In fact, he sometimes wondered what it would be like to live in such a small space. He wouldn't be surprised if the whole house was smaller than his apartment, but... he reminded himself not to make comparisons.

"Wow, do you play?" he wondered, eyeing the piano with curiosity, and wondering if he should feel guilty for wanting to take a look at the many photos as Evelyn got her binder for him. "I play the guitar... never really had time to learn the piano," he admitted, fumbling a little with the binder that was tossed his way, nearly dropping both his and hers in the process.

"No problem, I'll find it," he said with a wary smile, since he'd missed the class because of... certain events in his life... which was why he needed the notes. Of course, when he got to the section that should have had the notes he was missing... they weren't there!

"Uh... did you have them in another binder...? I'm missing... the class between these two," he said, pointing out the matching dates. "Was it canceled??" Because that would be great news for him!

"Ha! No." Evie was exactly the opposite of creatively inclined. The artsiest she got was rearranging the aquarium in her room. "My dad used to make my sister take lessons, but I don't think the thing's even been tuned in yeeeears. It's mostly just here because of family stuff."

She had just stuffed the very end of her sandwich in her mouth when he asked and leaned way over, rendered mute. But her brow knitted at the missing lecture notes and she scuttled down the hall to her room to produce another binder. Nope, not misfiled.

She slid on her socked foot across the floor to take a closer look at the dates and was about to check her calender when-- whoops.

She didn't have all the notes. Because that was the night she went to a senshi meeting and ended up nearly getting killed by a goddamned General-King.

And that was the one he also missed. Odd. And by odd unsettling. He could've been at that meeting. Or he could've been crashing the meeting. Or he could've just plain been busy but that was HUGE coincidence. "Yeah... it happened. A lot of people missed that one," She said, trying to choose her words carefully. "...Maybe they slid to the bottom of my bag. Hold on."

There was definitely a sudden overdose of tension in the air, completely destroying the previous light and casual demeanor from just a few moments earlier.

Whatever tension there might have been between Evie and himself, Chris had yet to pick up on it. He was still agonizing over the fact that he could very possibly be making a B in the class, which would break his goody-goody GPA.

Yes, he knew he'd missed the one class because of the meeting that... hadn't turned out very well, before and after the Negaverse and DMC showed up, but when she said to hold on, he did just that.

"Don't worry if you can't find them," he tried to reassure her, not wanting her to get worked up about it. It was just strange that she wouldn't have the notes when she was usually so organized. Or at least it seemed like she was.

Chris glanced up as she went to dig through her bag, looking around the tiny home again. It was quaint. And the more he looked around, the more he didn't think he'd mind living in such a small place. It was so much of a contrast to what he was used to, but who knows... maybe he was in need of that kind of change.

Evie had reached an odd level of paranoia, occasionally poking her head out of her room to make sure Chris was still there, worrying about his grades and not... touching anything. She did toy with the fact that she was being unreasonable, but, it was a big coincidence.

And she had also concocted some weird scenario where his 'act' was hiding a sordid individual like the weird military guy that attacked her at the bakery. Yes. What an unconvincing act, too. Obviously.

Evie was unsure how to confess she wasn't at the meeting either, like that would accidentally ~reveal~ something. Projected guilt, somewhat. Even though there were a million reasons someone could miss a class, she knew where she was, and that there were lots of people in their age range there, and that ramped up all of the unease in admitting she didn't have an alibi.

"Well I guess I don't--"

"Well, I'm off!" Just when she'd mustered up the courage, her father, who was probably the least threatening human being in the world, decided to dodder in around his columns of boxes and files, with a plate of perfectly baked lemon bars he most likely made himself. "Get along with your sister. Oh, hi!" He was in a rush, and didn't have time for introductions, but he did offer Chris a lemon bar and shouted something to Evie about not doing something she'd regret with her little boyfriend. Evie just made a face that made her look like an indignant frog for a second. Comments like that led her to believe the reverend was in denial about his daughter's tendency to bring home other girls. And he had just offered a possible Negaverser/DMC senshi a lemon bar. And that was just awful. She took a brief moment to be bewildered before continuing.

"I guess I missed that day," She said, carefully watching his expression. "I was... busy."
PostPosted: Sun Jul 29, 2012 8:49 pm

Chris laughed awkwardly as the man he assumed was Evie's father made his way through, offered lemon bars, and ran out without much of a chance for an introduction. He'd been attempting to stand and offer at least a handshake or something, but it seemed as though he was rather busy and took off.

"He reminds me a little of my mother," he observed, before shaking his head and taking a small bite of the lemon bar he'd snagged. He definitely wasn't going to say no to good food, especially when it smelled fresh. Hell, he wouldn't say no since that would just be rude, but that wasn't the point... or maybe it was.

"It's fine, I was busy too," he admitted, taking another bite and swallowing before flipping through his notes again. "I hate missing class, especially when I'm struggling with it... but there was this... thing I needed to go to... These are really good," he threw in the compliment when he realized he might be edging into territory that he wouldn't be able to explain to a classmate. How did one exactly go about telling them that they missed class because they're a knight?

Talk about awkward... And then she'd never let him copy notes! Er... if she had them.

"Well... if you don't have them, then I'm sorry I bothered you," he apologized, feeling strange just sitting there now that there wasn't much to do except maybe study...? "Are you ready for the exam? I hate essays... I wish it was all multiple choice..."

Evie had just started to relax, thinking she was spending too much time around her sister and had no reason to assume Chris had been at the meeting or a meeting crasher. Until he brought up a 'thing' he had to go to, and she had to mentally talk herself down again.

"Yeah, he's busy. And kind of the mom around here," She said, grabbing a lemon bar and cramming it in her face to stall for a moment to pick her words carefully. "Same. I had a... meet up thing with some friends," Then she tried to laugh it off like she wasn't completely wound up on the inside. "First time I missed a class, but everyone gets to be irresponsible sometimes, right?"

She made a bit of a face at the reminder of the exam, though. A lot of things were slipping her mind lately. "Like I'm ever ready. And my Nazi of a boss has me working shifts during all the time I could be studying until then." Not exactly true, but sometimes when Evie had a choice between patrolling with a teammate and risking a mediocre grade it wasn't always an easy choice.

"Me too. Missing a class I mean. Well, I've missed one or two before, but for different reasons," he tried to explain, an awkward smile forming when he realized he wasn't really making any sense. He was too focused on keeping up his grades to purposefully skip, but that night... Part of him was relieved that he was there, if only to be a support for those who depended on him, but another part wished that he'd somehow convinced everyone he knew not to go.

Chris nodded lightly to show he understood her problem with getting a chance to study. "Yeah, I get caught up in, uh... work things, too. I don't really have an official job, but I guess you can say it's more of a volunteer thing that I do a handful of nights a week." Right, like that didn't sound like he was an escort or something ridiculous. "Uh, usually with friends. The city is a dangerous place, so... I wouldn't recommend going out alone."

Okay, now he was making even less sense. He coughed and cleared his throat as if that would distract her from how awkward he was being, and then shuffled through some of his notes. "Did you hear how they found a bunch of people who'd been killed the other night...? No suspects, or so I've heard..." he rambled aimlessly, before realizing that... it had been on the night they'd both missed class. Ugh... he was just sounding more and more crazy by the minute.

Evie had to grit her teeth to hold her tongue when he started randomly bringing up the meeting night and the fatalities. Okay, obviously he was on the wrong side because what a psycho.

She stared at him for a quiet moment, mouth in a pressed, straight line until she said in a slow tone that had a hint of accusation to it. "Yeah... I heard. Crazy s**t, huh? Heard it was terrorists."

She stared at him, not saying a word. Maybe she was wrong and he was a perfectly normal guy who just liked randomly bringing up deaths he'd read about in the paper. but in that case he could think she was weird and socially awkward and flee and that would be just fine with her.

"Hey, isn't that the day you skipped class? Lucky you weren't there, right?" Though it was said more in a flat monotone than like a question.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 10, 2012 9:25 am

From the way she was looking at him, Chris could only assume that his choice in topic had been a bad idea. Seriously... who brought up the deaths of many in the city when it was already worrisome to walk out of the house at all??

He shifted uncomfortably, his cheeks turning the slightest pink in embarrassment as he busied himself with flipping through pages. Having it pointed out that he'd missed (not skipped... he didn't skip classes... or at least he's trying to convince himself of such) the day that everything happened only made him more uncomfortable.

"Terrorists... do you really believe that?" he wondered out loud, although he didn't know why he was just digging himself into a deeper hole. It didn't dawn on him before that she might think he had something to do with what had happened... but now that she seemed to be accusing him of something...

"You missed that day too, though," he pointed out, looking up from his notes and indicating his own binder to point out the ones she didn't have. "I guess we were both lucky...?"

He didn't really know where he was going with that, but he didn't like how the conversation was turning. What did she suspect? Or... had she been there, too??

Evie's eye twitched slightly when he asked if she believed it. "Of course! Who wouldn't?"

And then she slammed the table with her fist in a mock 'eureka!' fashion and stood up to give him an overly dramatic point. "Oh! Right! Because you're part of it!" It meaning war, but she was hoping on the off chance she had just blown her cover as a not crazy person she could say something like the media agenda or something. she did have something of a reputation for being a hippie on campus and then he could leave thinking she was only kind of unbalanced.

Dana busted in the front door, peeking through the cutaway in the wall at the entrance to see the accusatory stance her sister had taken and seemingly forgot what she rushed in for. She walked over, a bit behind Chris and gave Evie a sarcastic smile at all the awkwardness in the room. "Heeey, sis, whatcha doin'?" In a very "OH U" sort of tone. Evie had obviously lost some brains to this senshi thing.

"Dana, get away from him," Evie snapped, grabbing her by the arm and pulling her to her side of the small table that had seemingly become a line in the sand.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 10, 2012 10:26 pm

He stared at her, a little startled when she finally jumped to her feet. Was she really losing her mind? Or did she just think he was... really... part of the war. A terrorist?

"Evie," he sputtered, trying to figure out where she was going and if he was going to have to defend himself against... something. He didn't know if she had been one of the powered there, but if she was, was she really that stupid to call him out and therefore reveal herself??

Not that he didn't have his stupid moments.

Chris jumped at the sound of the other girl's voice, a hand flying up to clutch dramatically at his chest for no reason other than the fact that he was starting to feel cornered. He offered the other, younger girl, a small, awkward smile over his shoulder, before quickly throwing his hands up as a sign of peace and defenselessness.

"Hey now," he frowned, trying to balance the binder on his knees. "Whatever you think I'm going to do, or am capable of doing, you've got it all wrong." He was a good guy! Promise!

"Yeah right, you were practically bragging," Evie accused, honestly projecting way more of her own thoughts onto what he said and exacerbating the whole 'randomly bringing up deaths' thing, whatever that was.

Dana kind of pressed her lips together in a bit of a resigned smile, accepting the humiliation of the family fate had burdened her with. Judging by the lemon bars, their doddering father had torn through here recently, and now Evie was interrogating him or something. "I'm sorry, my sister's a lesbian and doesn't understand that psychotic accusations aren't the proper way to treat tall Italians," The preteen said in half a swoon and lifted her hand in a little wave before Evie pulled it down. "Knock it off, Day."

Dana managed to get out a questioning syllable before her much taller sister looped her arms under hers and picked her up, which was just humiliating, I mean, for gods sakes she was practically a teenager.

"Um..."

"What, Dana?"

"Wel--" Finally taking her mind off of the confrontation she'd walked in on, she recalled she did run in the house and deadbolt the door for a reason. A reason that only announced its presence with a low, barely audible growl before splintering through the door in a mass of youma with mismatched animal paws on an odd number of legs, snarling and hissing at the assumed easy prey that got away minutes earlier.

"s**t," Evie reacted in a knee jerk shove, pushing her sister behind her so there was a suitable human shield between the civilian kid and youma and she frantically grasped around for her pen.

"It followed me home, can I keep him?" Dana asked sarcastically.
