Amun yawned as he wandered absently, calmly taking in the sight of his surroundings. He was adjusting to life as a Gladier quickly, according to Esha, and the female had taken him to other places to explore and learn. He yawned again, looking at the lightening sky. 'Getting a little drowsy... well, I am supposed to be nocturnal. That was part of the wish...' Still, he was sleeping so often that he could make an exception. After all, he hadn't seen daytime yet. He frowned as he noticed the sky changing itself to a much lighter hue of blue.
"Esha?" Amun wandered back over to his companion. His expression was puzzled and maybe even concerned. "What happened to the stars?" He couldn't see them anymore. "Can you not see them in the daytime?"

Esha had stopped to sit down and rub her eyes, as usually by morning she always grew weary. Today was no exception.
"Huh.. the stars? Oh, they're still there... but for some reason they're not visible during the day", she responded. Even her thought process was a teensy bit slower than usual, much like a normal gladier's speech would become slurred when they were tired.
"But there's the sun.. it's a star too, I think, but it's so much closer that it's bigger and brighter.. a little too bright, really.."
She was all but ready to retire to their den for the day, but as usual she figured she'd wait for him to express his willingness to go home.

"Oh. I see." Amun inspected the sky again. "Is the sun what makes the sky change color?" He could also hear sounds, but they were different than the crickets he was used to. Maybe Esha knew what they were. Just as he was starting to lower his gaze to Esha again, his eyes locked onto a ball of blinding brightness. He yelped and backed up as he tried to shield his watering eyes, tumbling backwards into his companion. "What," he gasped after a moment, his vision filled with spots, "is THAT?!" He felt blind!

The warm morning air was gradually filling with birdsong and other sounds of diurnal creatures. While it wasn't outright unpleasant, it was still noisier than what Esha would've liked. And then came the part she hated. She did like the colors of the horizon just before sunrise, but the sun itself was too much for her. The little female desperately shielded her eyes with one front paw, squinting at the same time. It was just simply too bright.
"That.. would be the sun", she informed Amun. "And yes, I believe that it's what causes the sky to change into so many different hues." As the morning grew brighter and brighter, Esha became increasingly uncomfortable. Could they finally go sleep? Their den was oh so inviting right now, with its cozy dimness in contrast to the light that was currently blinding them both.
"I wish it wasn't so bright.."

Amun nodded.in agreement as h tried to regain his bearings. "Too bright..." He nuzzled his face into Esha's fur, as if he was trying to hide from the blinding sunlight. Although he couldn't see her well with his spotty vision, he could feel her discomfort. "Let's go back..."

Esha laid her head on Amun's shoulder, still squinting awkwardly to try to see even a tiny bit of what was around them.
Their den was deeper inside the woods, so at least the trees and undergrowth would offer them some relief while they made their way back.
"Let's go.. it's back this way", Esha told him, nudging him ever so slightly in the right direction knowing he couldn't see from the brightness. The sun crept higher above the horizon every moment, and grew brighter as it did so. She just wanted to get back into the darkness - or even partial shade - where she could see without stinging pain in her eyes.

Amun began walking in the direction Esha had nudged him toward, pausing only when he lost track of where the female was. Once he found her again, his motion resumed.
"How do people see in the daytime?" he wondered aloud. It seemed impossible to him. Such blinding light... was the sun really a star like he'd once been? How could anyone stand that brightness?

"I don't know.. but supposedly, daywalkers can't really see in the dark, like us, either. We're.. all adapted to our own environments, I guess", she replied.
She stopped every time Amun seemed to stray too far, and continued walking when he got closer. Gradually, the dense undergrowth of the forest and its edge made their surroundings darker once again. Little by little she was able to open her eyes, and actually see what was around her.

"But the dark doesn't hurt your eyes," Amun pointed out, stumbling as he did so. Blindness made walking and talking difficult. He'd have to remember that.
His eyes almost sang with relief as they entered the darker area, beginning to recover from their battle with the sun. He yawned and bumped into Esha. "My apologies," he mumbled as he righted himself. He didn't feel tired in the way he usually did when he needed to sleep. He felt drained, though. "Can the sun steal your energy?" he asked as he tried to walk straight.

"True, it doesn't.. but I think their eyes don't adjust to the dark and they're just as blind as we are in sunlight", Esha pondered. The few times she'd come across other gladiers back as a kit, when her parents were still around, she had been told this. She couldn't really imagine the sun being pleasant though, but apparently to some it was.
She gasped quietly as Amun bumped into her, surprised. "It's okay", she reassured him, rubbing her eyes with one paw again. "Um.. I guess it could. I don't know for certain though. It sure feels that way, huh.."
She just wanted to get further away from the brightness. "Luckily our part of the woods stays shady the entire day.." she thought as they slowly made their way further into the undergrowth.

"Oh... I see." So instead of seeing only white, they saw only black? Interesting.
He stuck close to Esha, nodding to her comment. "It does feel that way," he confirmed. At her last comment, Amun nuzzled his face into her fur. "Mm-hmm... but my vision still has spots..." And Esha's dark fur was really soft. "How do you get rid of them?"

His sudden show of affection made her stop, and she softly nuzzled Amun in return. "I think they should go away on their own after a while.. there's nothing else you can do but wait, really, I'm afraid", she told him. She still saw bright spots everywhere, too. They were irritating, since they basically made her partially blind.
She could feel his discomfort, and it in turn added a little to her own. She wished there was something she could do for him. As sad and frustrating as it was, there were many things she couldn't affect, things that were simply beyond her grasp.
"Is it hurting anymore?"

"M'kay," he mumbled. He thought about just shaking his head to her question, but that would require moving away from her. "No, no, it doesn't hurt. It's just a little irritating." And growing less so as he turned his focus elsewhere. Nuzzling Esha again, he asked, "What about you? Are you alright?"

She exhaled softly into his fur, her eyes closed. "It's getting better. The spots are still there but they're starting to fade", she replied. She reckoned this must have been a pretty shocking experience for the former star, but some things couldn't be taught. She had been curious about the sun as a kit too, and had gone through the same pain and confusion back then.
At least they didn't stare at it for long, so it would likely ease up soon. "Do you still want to stay up, or should we retire into the den for the day..?" she asked then, ever so gently nudging him to indicate she wished to get moving again, deeper into the darker part of the forest.
