“I don’t understand why I have to accompany you,” Chase told his father bitterly as the man pulled up at the entrance of his former school. “What’s the point, I’ll just be standing there waiting for you to finish your meeting. You would have been better off leaving me home,” he spat, golden eyes staring outside of his window.

“You know very well why I brought you along,” the older man snapped, downshifting his vehicle as they came to a stop. “You cannot be trusted to be on your own, your mother has other activities keeping her from being home today. The only way to ensure that you will do as told it to keep you under constant surveillance.”

“You treat me like a prisoner,” Chase retorted, head snapping to look at his father. His bright eyes were narrowed into a glare and his arms folded tightly across his chest.

“Until you learn to behave, that is exactly what you are.”

Chase fought the urge to snort as he turned away, rolling his eyes in the process. He wasted no time in unbuckling his seat belt and getting out of the car. The farther away from the older man he was the better, even if it was short lived.

“You will behave while we are here, do you understand me?” The older Black demanded as he too exited the vehicle.

“Of course father,” the teen replied trying to keep his tone from dripping with venom.

Samuel studied his son for a moment, carefully observing the stance of the younger man before walking toward the school’s entrance. Why couldn’t the boy understand that everything he did was in his best interest? He said nothing more to the boy, instead he simply gestured for him to follow expecting the boy to fall in line immediately.

Sometimes Chase worried that he was giving up the fight but then he simply had to remind himself that he was merely biding his time, waiting until the moment arose that he could break free of the metaphorical chains his father had trapped him in. And so, he fell in step behind his father.

The pair approached the desk where the young blonde secretary sat. “My name is Samuel Black,” the older man introduced himself. “I have an appointment with the dean.” He glanced over to his son. “This is my son Chase, he graduated from Azure last year, would you mind keeping him busy while I’m in the meeting?”

Way to go dad, make him seem like a helpless child. Lovely.

Chase cleared his throat and offered a half smile at the girl. “Hello.”

She would have been foolish to think that with her promotion there wouldn't be some additional responsibility, but the sheer amount of it was what had surprised her. Selena was an organised girl, but a week into her new full-time secretarial position and she was still struggling a little to juggle everything. She was definitely getting there, though, and so when the dark-haired man strolled up to the desk she knew who he was before he introduced himself. It was right here, on her orange sticky-note (orange meant important!).

"Ah, Mr Black," she answered, polite and courteous in her mannerisms. She stood as he approached and offered a wide smile, her hair neatly arranged with a selection of sparkly hair-grips and her attire smart. "The dean has been expecting you - his office is this way." She smiled again, this time extending it to the younger boy standing beside him, as she shuffled out from behind her desk and showed him to the door of the dean's office. She knocked briskly on the door, waiting for a 'come in' before twisting the handle and holding the door open for the visitor. Once he'd entered, she allowed the door to swing shut behind him, waiting for the satisfying 'click' of the hatch before she turned back to Chase and offered a wider grin. "Hey there."

Her polite manner disappeared in an instant - whilst years of ballet kept her posture all but perfect, her demeanor suddenly became a lot warmer and more welcoming as she returned to her desk, lifting herself up to sit on the corner. It got boring being by herself in the office all day, so any chance of a conversation she was going to grab with both hands. "I'm Selena." She extended a hand to the boy, eyes drifting up to the bright streak in his hair, "That's a pretty cool style you have."

She glanced to the door Chase's father had just entered, and offered him a sympathetic smile, "I can relate. My dad's a d**k too."

Chase watched quietly as his father was led away. He stood there awkwardly unsure of how to stand, if he should sit or if he should make some sort of escape attempt. He waited too long to pick a plan of action when Selena came back his way and offered him her hand. For a moment he didn't respond ore react, it was almost as if he had forgotten how to. Outside of his parents he hadn't had any sort of social interaction until this moment.

"Thanks," he mumbled, running a hand through the pink before awkwardly shaking her hand. Quickly he pulled his hand away and stood there awkwardly, unsure of what to do next. He took a moment to decide if he wanted to take a seat or continue to stand there, with his hands tucked into the front pockets of his black skinny jeans. He chose to stand.

"He's one of the biggest too," he said without a second thought when she called his father a d**k. "I don't get why he had to drag me along, I'm not a dog on a leash. I mean," he shook his head in frustration unintentionally spilling his guts to the poor girl. "I'm nineteen and he asked you to practically baby sit me. It's a little ridiculous."

It wasn't until he finished rambling that he realized he had shared more than intended, he had meant to make an attempt at being charming but he had failed miserably. "I'm sorry," he told her quickly offering her half of a smile. "I don't mean to trouble you with...whatever that was. It's just...it's been a while since I've been around such a beautiful lady, I've forgotten how to act."

There, much better.

After a small pause he shook her hand, although he seemed rather awkward about the whole thing. She wasn't sure why - she wasn't intimidating was she? Selena frowned inwardly at the thought, but outwardly was still smiling and making a conscious effort to look as welcoming as possible. She wondered briefly if he'd sit, but he'd been standing for a while now so she assumed that was how he was most comfortable.

When Chase finally started speaking her smile stretched a little further, the corners of her lips twitching in amusement. To start with she'd been wondering if he was mute, and now he didn't seem to be able to stop talking! She got the feeling that he'd been stuck inside for a while, bottling this all up. Sometimes all it took was someone willing to listen, and Selena had always been told she was a good listener. He seemed to catch himself and apologised, but Selena dismissed it with a wave. "Don't worry about it. Sometimes you just need to let go, y'know?"

At least he was smiling now...sort of. "My dad's in jail for screwing my whole family, and sort of the country in general, over." It was almost like it was a competition, who's dad was more of a d**k. Selena knew that in her eyes, it would always be Percival.

The compliment came as a surprise, so much so that her smile faltered and her eyes widened, her face somewhat reminiscent of a deer caught in headlights. She quickly caught herself however, offering her own, somewhat embarrassed smile back. Oh god, her cheeks weren't going pink were they? "Heh...thanks." She wasn't really sure what to say, so tried to play along, "You're not so bad yourself."

Glancing at her nails, feeling that was a better bet than looking at his face and turning a distinctly un-beautiful shade of tomato, she changed the subject, "So are you on house arrest or something at the moment?"

He arched a brow when she so casually told him that her father was in prison. For a moment he said nothing, simply tried to read her expression before reacting. "Sounds rough," he offered sympathetically. "Dad's just seem to suck." He didn't say anything else on the matter, he knew it would be an argument that he didn't have the fight to fight. Nor did he see it worthy of any sort of argument.

Absentmindedly he played with his hair again, running his fingers through it and tugging on the tips of his hair. "Thanks," he told her looking away briefly, as a more natural smile spread across his lips. "Though I can promise I've looked better," he laughed looking back over at her. "They don't let me near a gym any longer," he confided though it would probably just confuse her.

He considered her question for a moment before nodding slightly. "I guess you could call it that," he paused to adjust his stance, sliding his hand back into his pocket. "It's kinda complicated," he admitted, a troubled expression crossing his face. Why was he so willing to share things with her? He didn't even know her!

"My parents don't let me out of their sight, well not really anyway."

She responded to his sympathy with a small, grateful smile, but then quickly moved on. Selena watched as he played with his hair, a larger smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. It was almost...endearing, the way he did that, a habit that he probably didn't realize he had. She didn't know whether she should be saying cute, especially if this kid used to be a student here. That was just inappropriate, surely?

The blonde rolled her eyes as he spoke again, though the grin that had stretched her lips gave away that it was a joke. He wasn't even allowed to the gym? "What did you do to deserve lockdown, then?" This might be invading personal space a little, so Selena toned down the grin and merely looked interested. If he didn't want to tell, he didn't have to, she wouldn't be offended. Heck, she'd have told him to stop being nosy if he'd pushed her on the subject of her own father, so she wouldn't blame him for telling her the same thing.

Still, she was curious.

Chase couldn't be too much younger than her, of that he was certain. A year had already passed since he had graduated and this was his last year as a teenager. The thought made him visibly cringe, if only because it reminded him that no matter how old he was his father would always try to have him on some sort of leash. It was her voice that jerked him from his thoughts and he found his head snapping up in attention, golden eyes fixating upon her face.

"Parents don't usually like it when you pretty much run away," he told her, his smile no longer on his lips. His expression was a solemn one and he didn't know why he was so easily sharing this with her. It had been hard enough telling Hayden, so why was he spilling his guts so freely with this girl he had just met? Maybe the lack of social interaction had simply left him as more of a loose cannon than he used to be.

"I was practically my father's lap dog while I was dating this girl and we had a...nasty break-up and I had some other...obligations that took priority for me over what my dad wanted," he paused to study her expression. "So I kinda split, slipped off the grid and disappeared. I picked up two jobs along with my...extra curricular activity. Dropped out of college too, but I cut off all contact with my parents." He paused again but this time he dropped his gaze and looked to the floor. This was the first time he was an open book, he felt exposed but didn't stop talking.

"I didn't take good care of myself and got in a nasty fight which resulted in me being admitted into the hospital," he told her still averting his eyes. "The damages from the fight mixed with malnutrition led to me being deemed unfit to care for myself and since my roommate called my parents I'm under their care since my father is...resentful for my actions. It's my punishment."

Ah, running away. Selena nodded, looking to her feet for a moment as she pondered how, for her family, it had been the other way around. Her father had been the one trying to do the running.

She'd assumed that he'd been purposefully vague and that his explanation would conclude there, but suddenly he was talking and talking and didn't seem able to stop. The blonde lifted her head, blue eyes meeting his and keeping the gaze as Chase let his life story stumble out of his mouth. She was surprised - after all, he hardly knew her - but at the same time she got the very strong feeling that he needed this, that he needed someone to listen, and so she shuffled her bum to make herself more comfortable and did just that.

Her expression was one of interest as she listened, giving away nothing else as she watched him carefully. She was amazed that parents could manage to hold such control over their child, especially a teenager who was presumably more than capable of looking after themselves. He looked to the floor but she kept her attention on him, watching his hair instead. All soon became clear however, and with a nod to show she understood and it all made sense, Selena finally broke the eye contact to look at her shoes again. She had a scuff on one, how annoying.

What was she supposed to say that to? The kid had pretty much just laid bare everything that was crap about his life, and she wasn't sure what she was expected to say. "That...that really sucks, Chase." She looked up to him again, offering a small, shy smile, trying to tease one out of him in return. She always liked it better when people were smiling, especially their eyes - eyes were supposed to be the window to your thoughts and your soul, and when a person smiled you could see their happiness reflected in them.

"You look much better now," she continued, chewing the inside of her lip, "But I'm guessing he won't let you leave again?" She assumed it was a stupid question, since he certainly would have done so already if the opportunity was there. Reaching a hand up to scratch an itch on her eyebrow, Selena sighed softly. "I guess the only thing to do is play lapdog, at least for the time being. Build up his trust, make him think you've changed. Heck, you could say I talked sense into you - then bam, first chance you get you run."

He hadn't looked up since he had finished talking, not even when she addressed him and offered what sympathies she could. He felt hollow, as he had since he had originally defeated Sailor Iris. That seemed like a lifetime ago. There had been times that he had thought that his defeat had been just, and he still thought that, and that it would help him stop feeling so empty but nothing seemed to help. He hadn't decided if that was because he had returned to the dark clutches of his father or if because he hadn't been out on the streets doing what he constantly itched to.

"No," he said slowly. It had almost been as though he hadn't been listening to her. He had been so quiet it was almost as if he had lost himself in his thoughts, but he had been listening. It was just harder for him to speak now. He suddenly felt shy and small, a feeling he was unaccustomed to. "It isn't an option," he stated looking back up.

"It would be nice if things were that simple," he admitted heaving a heavy sigh, "but it's unlikely that I will ever regain his trust. Actually, I don't think I've ever really had it." He let out a harsh laugh. "My father is no fool, he deals with liars and cheaters every day. I doubt I would be able to fool him a second time." He stopped to consider her offer, a real smile spreading across his lips. "Though he did seem to like you, maybe I could convince him to let me spend some time around you."

Chase liked the idea the more the thought about it.

She wondered if she'd said the wrong thing - it was a difficult situation to be in, and she'd tried to remain positive but realistic. It was horrible when someone was trying to convince you that you were just being dramatic, but at the same time she didn't want to agree with him that s**t happens and send him plummeting further into the dark depths of despair. She wanted to strike a middle ground, but that there was where the difficulty lay.

Chase finally spoke up, slowly at first, and the blonde offered a reassuring smile as he did so. Selena was treading carefully, not wanting to upset her new friend, and so she let him speak without interrupting. Heck, he may have just told her what he was going through, but she still couldn't even begin to figure out everything going on in his head. People were complicated, and she'd learnt the hard way that you shouldn't assume anything about anyone. Not even your family.

The reassurance in her expression faded a little along with her smile, and her nostrils flared as she breathed out heavily. It had been silly of her to assume that he hadn't already thought of every possible escape method, but she'd wanted to help. The smile that brightened his face caused hers to suddenly jump back, however, and she laughed a little as he suggested hanging around more.

"I'm sure I could find something for you to do to make yourself useful. It does get kinda lonely around here, especially in the school holidays." She liked the idea, although she doubted the budget would stretch enough to be able to afford him a wage. Still, that didn't seem to be what he was after. "I could, y'know, instill a sense of responsibility or something. Being the responsible, sensible, polite girl I am." She winked at him, lips stretching to a grin.

Chase would probably consider himself to be one of the more complex individuals in the world. He was a master of showing people what they wanted to see, of course right now was an exception but it was likely because he was so tired of being everything that everyone else wanted. It was...relaxing to be open with someone who knew absolutely nothing about him.

Especially since Selena didn't seem to judge him, she only offered him what comfort she could. It was nice feeling like she didn't want something from him like everyone else did.

"That would be nice," he told her because the idea was one that he was growing more fond of. "He wants somewhere where he can keep an eye on me. What better place than the boarding school I spent years at?" He shook his head, mildly amused by the thought. "Though the Dean was never a fan of me, I'm sure if you presented the idea my father could pull some strings."

His father was always pulling some sort of string. He usually preferred the strings he attached to his son's back.

Suddenly a door opened and his head snapped up in the direction of the deans office. "Speak of the devil and he shall come," Chase mumbled under his breath.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 06, 2012 11:29 am

He seemed up for it, which was nice. If she was creeping him out or he didn't particularly want the company, it would just be awkward having him here - for both of them. But he seemed genuinely eager, and so she smiled and nodded and made a mental note to mention it to the dean later that afternoon. "I can do that!"

But all good things had to come to an end, and time always seemed to fly when you were having fun. The door to the dean's office clicked open, and Selena hastily hopped off of her desk, flashing a bright smile at Chase before her expression faded back to one of politeness, the blonde giving a polite nod as the two men exitted the office and said their goodbyes. Walking back around to her side of the desk, she scribbled something on a post-it note before returning to her previous position, reaching out a hand to shake Chase's hand as his father came back into earshot.

"It was nice to meet you Chase, I hope you can help me organise my filing again sometime." Her smile was warm, but not too bright, and when she took her hand away she left the crumpled post-it note in his hand.

When he opened it later he'd find her phone number.

"I'm holding you to that," he warned her, smirking before his playful expression transitioned into the solemn one he had worn when he had first entered. His eyes followed Selena's movements until she bent over her desk to scribble something down. They flickered towards the older Black as he reached out his hand to accept hers.

"It was a pleasure," he responded coolly turning his attention back to the girl. He offered her a polite smile as his fingers curled around the paper. He pulled back quickly, hurrying to shove his hands back into his pockets to hide the post-it. "I would be," he paused just briefly, "I would love to."

Samuel watch the interactions between his son and the secretary with a skeptical expression. He wasn't sure what to think of the girl but the dean seemed fond of her and had praised her in their meeting so he was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. "Thank you Ms. Adams for keeping my son busy," he told her with a fake smile plastered on his lips.

"Come Chase, it's time to go."

Chase fought the urge to sigh as he turned and nodded. "Yes, sir." He fell in step behind the older man. He turned back at the door to grin at Selena. "I'll call you," he mouthed as they left.
