Hypatia was not normally one for rash decisions. Detailed lists, colorful pie charts, bar graphs-- she liked to see it all laid out in front of her, color-coded and alphabetical by pro and con. And yet... here she was, standing in the reception area of a local animal rescue shelter, dressed down in jeans and a vintage t-shirt with a faded soda pop label across the chest, cutesy flats with lace bows on the toe covering her feet instead of her usual high heels, long hair back in a simple pony tail.
And what, one might ask, was a shop girl from Destiny City Antiques and Collectibles doing at a local animal rescue shelter? After reviewing her apartment's lease agreement, it had come to Hypatia's attention that it was well within her rights as a renter to have one(1) small pet, under thirty pounds, for the duration of her stay. And so with nary a thought further, she had grabbed her purse and out the door she had gone to catch the nearest cab.
"Could I possibly look at some of the animals?" Hypatia asked to the room at large, not sure if anyone was within earshot of helping her or not. There seemed to be a few people milling around wearing matching t-shirts with the shelter's logo on them, but they all seemed to be rather busy... And an animal was a lot of responsibility, perhaps she could just... slip out, unnoticed. Leave a donation, of course, but...

Yahya's life was going well, or so he'd like to think. Disregarding weird happenstances occurring in Destiny City, his job was steady and something he loved, and his parents didn't hate him for not attending university yet. He'd get there, he just had so many things to do! At the moment, it was carrying a female cat who had just been checked out by the vet to her cage. Hopefully, in a few weeks she'd find a new home, and just as soon as she'd leave another animal would come in that needed to be tended to. Usually, Yahya worked with wildlife such as birds and possums, but he helped out wherever was needed.
His job kept him busy, needless to say. Really, he hadn't had time to think about some double life he's suppose to lead to save Destiny City. He had plenty of lives in his care to think of already! Gingerly, the blue-haired young man deposited the cat into her temporary home. Doubtlessly she'd have a more comfortable place to sleep soon. Now, it was on to the next task! Yahya felt like he did nothing but run around all day, trying to catch up to a list of tasks that was too long to wrap his head entirely around.
He was passing through the front lobby when he noticed another teenager who clearly needed assistance. No, Hypatia, there was no turning back now. The smile that came to Yahya's face was easy and likeable, the sort of expression that was natural to him. The smile probably made up for how dirty he looked, wearing old overalls over a t-shirt that still had some cat hair on it from his latest furry friend.
"Of course! I'm Yahya," he greeted her cheerfully, simply waving at her because he hadn't gotten to the hand sanitizer yet after handling the cat. "What were you interested in looking at?" He was more than happy to divert himself from work if it meant getting an animal a nice home! In fact, that was the entire purpose of his work.

Hypatia had to admit, the panic that had been setting in at her impulsive decision was easily dispersed at the sight of such a genuine, kind smile. A matching expression curving on her own lips, Hypatia tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear and held out a hand to Yahya, despite his dirty appearance. If she was going to be the proud owner of an... animal, well. She'd have to get used to a little dirt, especially if she went for something like a small dog. No, no, there was the panic again, a dog was obviously right out. Dropping her hand from him, she glanced around a little nervously.
"Ah, well. Yes, I, um." Stop. Breathe. Continue. "I live in an apartment in town, and I was told that I was allowed to have a small animal. I work a lot, and I'll be starting up school again in the fall, so I need a... a pet that is okay with a lot of alone time, and doesn't require me to come home every two hours to let it out to do it's business. So, I think a dog is pretty much out of the question. But, other than that... I defer to the expert." She smiled at him again, the expression reaching her warm brown eyes. "Could I get some advice from you, maybe? I was thinking a cat, maybe..." She looked past him to scan over the cats that were within eyesight. None of them were quite catching her eye yet, but the idea of a cat in general... Yes, that she could handle.
Hopefully.

She seemed nervous, Yahya noted, though did not take her nervousness for uncertainty. It was perfectly fine to be nervous, considering that she was going to be taking responsibility for another creature's life. He'd rather she be a little anxious - it at least showed that she was thinking this through enough to know what she was getting into. Still, he wanted to put her at ease! The smile on his face seemed to be unmovable as he reached out to warmly shake her hand. Yahya was the sort of person who just seemed to live with the sole purpose of being happy. It was the exact kind of happiness that was infectious, if someone was open to it.
"You're right, a dog probably would be a poor match for you," he agreed easily. "So you're leaning towards a more low maintenance pet? Have you considered maybe a guinea pig, or a rabbit? Maybe a rat, too. They don't require as much care as a cat would, but then again, cats are pretty independent creatures themselves." He didn't think this would be too hard at all, Hypatia seemed to have a general idea of what she wanted, so he could easily work off of that.
"I have two cats, and I work a lot now that I'm out of highschool. They can take care of themselves fine while I'm gone, and when I come home they're the perfect entertainment. With cats, however, you don't really know what you get until you bring them home. They're very strong-minded animals, sometimes." She had expressed interest in cats, so he was already starting to lead her to the cat adoption area.

Hypatia hadn't considered getting some on the very small side. A rat could be nice... Oh, but Yahya was already leading her toward the cat area, and they all just looked so... fuzzy. Was this how some became crazy cat ladies? All the different colors and types, some meowing, some quiet, some playing, some laying, some young, some old, and all of them looking utterly adorable.
"I suppose it's not feasible for me to take all of them home with me?" she asked with a soft laugh, lifting up a hand for an orange tom cat to sniff at as she passed by his cage. "They're all so beautiful... No wonder you have two of them yourself," she added, turning to look at the young man helping her. "I know what you mean about having more work now that school's out. With summer here, at least for a little while longer, I'm keeping myself busy at the little antique store that I work at. Are there any of these delightful creatures you'd recommend?" she asked, tilting her head off to one side, looking again to Yahya for advice.
It was a little overwhelming, seeing so many animals in one place... They all looked equally cuddly, equally playful, equally entertaining. However was she supposed to choose? Given that Yahya already had two cats, though, and seemed eager to help her, Hypatia knew that she could count on him to steer her in the right direction when it came to picking a pet. It was obvious now that she had made the right decision to come here.
