Can you clarify a little? I'm not so sure that I follow you. Do you mean like Screenshots of the sky in different games? Or screenshots of your character?
If you mean this, than I'd say a contest of funny business. Like dancing, or hooligans trolololing. Or for fps's (might be hard) some head shots.

Well, honestly the categories would have to cater to the particular genre of the game being submitted. For example, what may work for RPGs (fashion for example) isn't really going to work for an FPS. Though most categories that you would think of for an FPS would probably work for an RPG.
"Most dramatic death of an enemy" for example can work for either.
"Most dramatic death of the player" is another example.
"Team work"
"Death with style"
Just my thoughts on it.

Best scenery?
Best PvP screenshot? (Might have to PvP with a friend here 8'D)

I would enjoy a screenshot contest.
I would suggest screenshots of:
-Awesome Overkills.
-Character in the middle of combat. (Skill)
-Scenery in game.
-PvP.
Would games like Vindictus be aloud? It's kind of the only game I actually play.
EDIT: You should try to keep the screen shots unedited if anything. That way it could be fair play. 3nodding

Avatars. 3 categories.
Most Intimidating. Meaning that they're dressed or posed in a way that you find it scary
Most badass. Meaning that it's posed or dressed in a way that you see it inspiring and awesome.
Best characterized: This one is a contest between who has the best back story for their character if they have a back story written.
people vote for which contestant best fits the 3. Then out of all 3, one grand winner is chosen.
