Chailyn toddled along having difficulty caring the pet cage. Laban and Taini's protests weren't helping the matter either. She had tried to put them on leashes but they wouldn't move. Even when she told them they were going home now that the vet was done looking at them, they still wouldn't budge. She gave a huff as she looked up at her mother who was having an extremely easy time carrying Princess. She stopped tilting her head to the side and putting her hands on her hips.
"Why can't I carry Princess? These two are heavy," she pouted. She stared up at her mother almost begging her to switch. It took a moment but her mother nodded handing the white feline to the tale. Princess purred nuzzling her head in Chailyn's neck, her wet pink nose causing the tale to giggle. "Thank you," she giggled out with a smile.
"Be careful Chailyn. I don't want Princess to get away from you," Anemone said softly. She knew it wasn't likely that the cat would run off but every once in awhile, Princess seemed to decide she had something to do and would disappear. No one actually knew where the feline went either.
As the group walked passed an alley, Princess's ears snapped back. She tensed in Chailyn's arms causing the girl to stop in look at the cat. "What's wrong?" Chailyn asked gently. She stared at the cat's yellow eyes trying to get an answer but the feline didn't pay much attention. Her fur bristled up as she jumped from Chailyn's arms. She sniffed the air just sitting for a moment as her tail swished. She smelt something, someone familiar. She pondered wondering why or if that person belonged here.
A motherly instinct snapped on inside the cat and she took off, her delicate padded paws avoiding any broken glass. She hurriedly rushed towards the scent purposely leading Chailyn and Anemone along the path. She was sorry that she couldn't simply tell them to follow her but she was an ordinary cat that couldn't speak. It didn't take long for Princess to find who she was looking for. A mew announced that she was there, before Princess moved to nuzzle up to the person.
It took Chailyn a minute or two longer to arrive and Anemone at least three, what with having to haul both Laban and Taini along. The two took deep breaths looking at one another and then Princess. It took them both a moment to recognize who the cat had found. Part of Ane said that they should collect the cat and go off but she knew that was wrong and quelled the thought.
"Nala? What are you doing here? Where's your mother?" Chailyn asked. She found enough courage to move forward and kneel down though the ground wasn't very sanitary. She avoided any sharp or broken objects looking at Nalira with concern.

Nalira leant her head back, her expression ambivalent as she remembered her mother – remembered how she would check on her when she was younger, how she insisted on it, just to make sure there was nothing waiting for her under her bed. Nalira doesn't want to – she doesn't care what that woman thought – but for some reason she felt a twinge of regret she couldn't help but acknowledge.
But no, she didn't care. She left her here, cold and alone and dying while she lays in a hospital bed, in complete control of her life while Nalira holds on by a single thread. A nagging voice in the back of her head was asking her not to make these assumptions, asking her why she was, but she couldn't answer. So, insead, she stares forward, her expression gradually neutralizing, exhausted and blank.
It took Nalira a few moments to register the cat rubbing against her. It didn't sever her from her thoughts, or lack of, but it forced her to face reality. Nalira turned over, careful not to dislodge the cat. Groaning, she pinched the bridge of her nose, feeling slightly annoyed.
"Hey there," She mumbled, rubbing Princess behind the ears. "Where did you come – " Nalira fell silent, straining to hear the emerging voices. The gears in her brain began whirring. Upon hearing her name, Nalira wrinkled her nose and shrunk into the shadows. Startled and disoriented, it took a moment for her to realize she knows those voices.
"Chai," She smiled, so small her face barely changed. She paused, rediculously aware of her chest rising and falling. "It's been a long time." She mumbled, so quiet it was almost a whisper. And then she laughed, just a little, sounding as if she was about to cry. With a tight smile, she looked down, running a hand over Princess.

"Yes, it's me. Are you ok, Nala?" the tale asked gently. She looked at Princess, who seemed momentarily angered that she had been dumped off Nalira's lap. Purring seem came from the feline, who rubbed against the troubled tale.
Hanging back, Anemone was the most observant at the moment. Chailyn was far too young and naive to understand any sign and Princess was acting on instinct. The woman looked at the surroundings. She didn't know why Nala was here, she didn't know how she'd come here, she didn't really know anything. The sun's rays didn't even reach to light the alley and it took her blue eyes a moment to adjust.
She furrowed her brows in concern. Even as worried as she was, she couldn't leave the tale here. She had to do something. "Nalira? Why don't you come over to our house?"

Okay, Nalira thought, leaning against the wall. Obviously this could be a good thing. In a lot of different ways. And this is why the idea seemed almost too hard to believe. She'd spent almost two months living on the streets. She'd been using for thirty-two days, and although she wasn't sure what that math added up to, the need for difference suddenly overwhelmed her, a kind of franticness. She needed to do something.
"Alright," Nalira hesitated, looking unsure. "Let's go then." She said flatly, straightening out and stretching her tired and aching muscles, brushing a hand over her arm. She wrinkled her nose, pulling down her sleeves, struggling not to let any emotion show on her face. With a frown, Nalira swallowed, not wanting to think of this, of now, inexplicably wishing for things to go back to the way they were.
She paused for a moment, her voice tight. "I'm not much company, you'll find," There was another pause, followed by a heavy silence. Sighing, she pulled her hair behind her ears. "Well, let's go then." She pressed, only vaguely aware of the tightness in her chest. She turned to leave, taking only a moment to grab her jacket and blindly grope her way out of the alley.
She doesn't know where Ane's house is, but she isn't going to stick around and find out.

Anemone blinked in surprise. She'd expected some resistance, or even a flat out refusal. Even now the woman was struggling with what to do. She really didn't think Nalira would hurt Chailyn but she wasn't herself, that much was obvious. She didn't know what the girl might do in this state if Chailyn said or asked the wrong thing. She wished that she could split in two and then she could easily to both things she wanted to.
"Chailyn, take Nalira home. Go straight home, though. Princess will go with you, ok? I'm going to stop by the stationary shop and leave a note for them," she told her daughter. She looked at Princess letting her get the idea of what needed to be done.
Chailyn nodded and skipped off after Nala with Princess. "Wait for me!" she called out after the older tale with a grin. She was obviously at a disadvantage being small, even Princess could keep up better than she could.
Anemone watched the duo until setting off on her own, lugging the cage along with her. She wasn't about to let Laban and Taini out. They'd probably get lost. Sometimes, things were very complicated.

Nalira stopped, stubborn impassivity showing on her face. "Sorry," She said flatly. "Was I going too fast? I'll slow down." There wass no emotion in her voice, no emphasis, no love. Her eyes were still burning from exhaustion, and she was honestly suprised she'd managed to stay upright for so long. Her body wanted to yawn and stretch, but she wouldn't allow herself that luxury. There was a big part of her that wanted her to feel bad – as bad as she possibly could, just so her body matched everything else.
Sometimes Nalira wondered about her own calmness. Sure, when drugs were flowing through her veins, making everything seem so much more thrilling and goddamned incredible, she could let loose a little without even realizing. But when she's coming down – caught in the limbo everyone else calls reality – she can't let go. She's quiet and still and just there.
Thoughts scrambled, Nalira reeled back as if she'd just been hit, jerking away from the hand being placed on her shoulder. Don't touch me her mind screamed as she stumbled back, gripping Chai's hand. Unexpected touches always end up in backing away and frightened eyes.
"Back for more already? And you've bought a little friend, too." A low rumble that might have been a laugh followed, tightening Nalira's grip on Chai. Panic rose in her chest, the kind that makes her tight and coiled and breathless and ready to run. For the first time in a very long time – she couldn't even remember the last time – she felt them coming. Hot wet tears that she didn't want to give in to. They make everything too here and too now.
"No," She breathed, so soft it was almost a whisper. "Please don't. She's only a little girl. Look around, you have plenty of customers." Nalira moved away, pulling Chai with her, trying to gain control of herself and forget for just a few moments. Just enough to get her breath back. Five, four, three, two, one. Nalira let out a small sigh. For the first time, she realized just how scared she was – she let herself realize it. But she wasn't scared for herself, she was scared for Chai.

Chailyn blinked as Nalira collided with the person. She looked up at him curiously offering a naive smile before she was dragged off. "Customer? Does he sell you blankets so you're warm?" she asked. Being a child she automatically assumed he must be good if Nala went to him.
However, Princess wasn't naive. She could sense he was not a good man and hissed, her ears falling back. She growled as her fur stood on end making her appear larger (if not much like a puffed up furball) making sure he didn't follow. She ripped him to shreds if he came near the two on her watch.
"Princey! Come on kitty!" Chailyn shouted motioning for the cat to hurry up. She turned back to Nala taking hold of her hand again as she led her alone. "Maybe you can stay with us, Nala? Or I bet we can find you a place to stay!"
Meanwhile, Anemone had finally reached the stationary shop. She'd been in such a hurry she'd gone passed it the first time. Pushing the door open, she set the cat carrier down letting Laban and Taini rest. "Hello? Is anyone here?" she called out. She didn't wait for an answer, she simply rushed over to the desk and jotted down a note for Huni or Linny.
Huni, Chailyn and I found Nalira in the streets. She doesn't seem to be doing well and I think something's wrong. For now, she's at my house. I'll call if I find out anything.
- Anemone
Thinking that would do, she sighed and started back to the door. She paused hoping someone would appear. She hated to just run off but she was worried about Chai and Nala.

Nalira sighed inwardly, running through the Rules in her mind. Don't tell her what he really sells. Don’t tell her what the term 'customer' means. Don't mention your mother or what you've been doing and for the love of god, don’t mention drugs or needles. None of this. And don’t scare her away. Scratch that, don't scare her at all.
Nalira stepped closer to Chai, breathing evenly. "Yes," She lied, glancing over to the younger Tale casually. "He sells blankets. But don't buy any from him, they're dodgey." She paused, still feeling the peculiar tightness in her chest once more. She was scared to let herself relax, even a little. Everyday is a new waiting game. Hit and miss, hit and miss, hit and miss. An endless charade of doubt and not knowing where you're going.
"Perhaps," Nalira said suddenly, stopping to swallow. "We'll just have to wait and see. Do you want to race?" It was a completely random, out-of-the-blue question, but it just seemed to fit. Nalira's heart beat faster and her fingers began to tingle. She was terrified of somehow screwing this – everything; her friendship, her welcome, her life – up. And lately it had become a little clearer just how badly screwed everything can get.

With Nalira's words, she dismissed the thoughts of the man. He must really not be someone important. Why would Nala lie? She gave a smile up at the older tale not noticing the frown or tighter grip. She was oblivious finding it much too wonderful to see her friend again.
Unlike her friend, Chailyn disliked the streets. It instilled fear in her. All these people who didn't have homes, all these animals scurrying about, trash and worse littering the alleyways. It made her sad for the people and animals but scared her too much to think of doing anything. They didn't look kind, a conception that could both hurt and save her should she ever get lost here.
"Yes, let's race!" she agreed with a grin. It'd be fun to race. She'd completely forgotten that Nala was blind. With a jump, she laughed knowing she probably couldn't win no matter what but it'd be fun!

"I'll start us off," Nalira said, allowing Chai time to ready herself. "Ready, set, go." Without a seconds delay, Nalira rushed forward. It hadn't occured to her that she didn't know the way to Anemone's house. Actually, nothing really occured to her. Everything was a blur of here and now and this.
"Hey, sweetie pie, got a light?"
Nalira looked over to the origin of the voice and quickly shook her head, avoiding eye contact (not that she could really make any) and hurried on. The voice sounded sick, and sick was never good when you're hurrying down a dingy street alone. She continued running, painfully unaware of where Chai was, then hesitated, reeling back.
Nalira felt a leg connecting with her ankle, lurching her forward onto the cement, teeth smashing together painfully. Nalira groaned as a warm coppery taste filled her mouth and braced herself for another attack, but no more blows came. Nalira shrunk back as hands began digging in the pockets of her jacket. She managed a bitterly amused grimace. Go on, look for money, she thought. Maybe they'd end up lending her a couple of dollars.
There was an explosion against her ribs and Nalira instinctively curled inwards, but suddenly realized just how lucky she was as she heard fast, retreating footsteps. It had just been a habitual kick, one last burst of machismo so the worthless bum wouldn't feel he'd completely wasted his energy. Slowly sitting upright, Nalira shook her head and carefully rested a hand on her side, wincing a little at the slight burn.

Giggles trailed behind Nalira as she rushed off, Chailyn doing her best to keep up. Stopping dead in her tracks, she opened her eyes. Her breath caught in her throat as she let out a squeaky yelp, "Nala!"
She rushed forward, stumbling a few times, before practically throwing herself down beside her friend. She touched her shoulder gingerly, gulping. "Are you ok? Nala?" she asked. She let out a breath, her mind pounding or was it her heart? She couldn't tell if her heart was beating, she was too scared that Nalira might be hurt.
Pulling at the fabric around her hair, she listened to it tear finding it wasn't very strong. She wiped at the tale's mouth a small bit of blood on her lips.
Luckily, or perhaps not, Anemone came trudging along behind them. She'd been walking as fast as she could to catch up to the two tales but it wasn't easy with the pet carrier, she was lucky she hadn't tripped over anything. "Chai? Nala?" She rushed forward kneeling down to help Nala sit up. "Where's Princess?" she asked realizing the feline wasn't around.
A mew came from beside Nala, a white head peeking out. This was not fun, the feline seemed to be saying as she crawled out. She shook her head, lifting her paw to clean it.
"Princess caught Nala!" Chailyn giggled. She let out a loud laugh tugging on Nalira's arm as she stood up before picking up Princess. "Silly cat!" she cooed.

"Well damn, hey? Trust me to," Think quickly, don't scare the girl. "Run into a garbage can. Running into those things shouldn't hurt so much, or leave so much damage." She laughed, flinching away from Chai's touch. She didn't even remember being kicked or hit in the shoulder. Slowly getting to her feet, Nalira placed a hand on Chai for support, balancing herself.
Good luck, you good-for-nothing a*****e.
"And yes, I'm fine." Nalira continued, shifting uncomfortably. Maybe she shouldn't stay with Chai and Ane – she never thought she'd have a place to stay again, afterall. Maybe, she thought, maybe she can’t. Maybe it will burn too much and hurt too much and be too much. She hadd already convinced herself that she wass independent, that she was alone in the world, why change now?
Nalira swallowed, feeling close enough to the edge already – close enough to snapping and just losing everything. Her feelings were coming back. For so long life, herself, everything, it was all just a mess. A catatonic mess surrounded by a thick cloud that she couldn't and didn't want to see through. But now it was becoming clearer and if she was that much of a mess when she closed off, how bad was it going to be when she started letting everything in again?

"Use this Nala," she took Nala's hand putting the light fabric in it. She gave a smile, leaning forward to hug the girl gently. Relief flooded her and she felt her stomach unknot but she was still a bit shocked. It shouldn't have been so surprising considering being blind and running usually didn't mix (unless they were in a padded cell).
"Are you all right?" Anemone asked, she waited for Nalira to get up before wrapping an arm around her shoulders. She bent down, wiping the hair from her face so she could see the tale's face. "Home isn't far. We'll get you cleaned up," she gave a soft sigh.
Chailyn held onto Nalira's free hand, giving a nervous smile. She wasn't going to let go of her friend for awhile, afraid something else might happy. She watched Princess trot in front of them as they neared home. "You'll have fun, Nala. There's lots to do at home," she piped up.

Nalira gratefully accepted the fabric, running it over her mouth. She allowed herself to lean into Ane's embrace, taking in a deep breath. There were too many feelings at once, too many burnings. Her chest was too full. Too much pain, too much pleasure, too much, too soon. She can't have touches, she can't have that light feeling in her chest or it all comes back, right from the beginning, right up to the end. Her heart and body just aren't big enough for this anymore.
So she jerks away.
"I'm sorry, Ane." She mumbled, closing her eyes to stop herself from crying. She can't cry, she won't cry. It's just too much. You act and feel and smell like," My mother. "Someone I know. And it just, I'm sorry." She whispered, fidgeting a little before lowering her head, trying to silently brush past Ane. It all seemed much too frightening all of a sudden. Besides, she though, I don't deserve to have that feeling of love, not after all I've done.

"It's all right Nala. We just don't want you to get hurt," she said biting her lip lightly. She didn't want to say that she thought Nalira was incapable of doing things but she was concerned that she might get Chailyn hurt.
She smoothed Nalira's hair with her hand, standing up so she could support the tale. It was a little hard since Chailyn was clinging to her friend but at least with both of them holding onto her, she hopefully wouldn't get hurt more. "It must be hard to walk when you can't see," Chailyn blurted out a blush covering her cheeks. "I mean..."
"I'm sure if I couldn't see, I'd be more like a bowling ball," Anemone joked trying to cheer up Nalira. She smiled and looked at the group of pets that had to be taken home. "I-"
"Don't cry," Chailyn cut off her mother as she wiped at Nalira's eyes. She hugged her gently. "I'd have fallen too, I'm not good at running," she beamed proudly even though she didn't really like it.
