A crying, sobbing mare was really not a pretty sight. Well, in truth, this particular mare was fair and delicate but even a beautiful creature crying was never a sight one wanted to see. At the very least such a scene would normally evoke great sadness and humility in others.

Avia was curled up in one of her favorite secret places, one of her nests. She built them several places, some publicly known, others like this one discovered by very few. It had become a recent habit for her to frequent this particular nest because it was in an area that she knew her mother and sister didn't like to go. There were some dangers to avoid on the way over here, but she had been treading this path for as long as she could remember. Why, if she had to, she could probably walk here with her eyes closed. But most importantly, this area was where she could be alone. It was a quiet place where animals strayed close but not too close, so her sobbing could probably be heard, but it was not the only sound carried on the wind. A few chitters and chirps here and there accompanied the maiden's sorrow.

Her eyes full of tears, Avia tried to regain her composure. Taking a few deep breaths she allowed herself to begin softly. She hummed a few warbled notes before she regained steady breathing. Another deep breath and then she truly began a wordless song. It was as grim and low as she was, hauntingly beautiful. But it was quickly cut short by another onslaught of quiet sobs. Tucking her upper half into that den that she had found so long ago (as that was all that fit anymore), Avia had not yet finished crying. Dark tears rolled down her cheeks as she pressed her forehead against a wall of the den that she had made her nest.

The sun was warm on his back, his eyes shielded from it by the thick black curtain of his hair. He hated how the sun would glint off of his glasses and bother his eyes--it always disrupted his reading. He went everywhere with his books--stealing moments or sometimes hours away to read a new passage or go over a familiar and favourite tale.

The stories were good, yes very good. These stories, of course, were written by masters. However, Horus did not always agree that the way things were written were the best. Not all endings should be happy. He'd often rewritten them in his mind, adapted them to apply to some stallion or mare walking by until he could come up with a tale on a whim.

It had taken time, but he'd mastered manipulating words and through them other soquili.

A soft sound struck his ears, causing him to turn his head and flick his ears in the direction. He could feel a smile tickling at the edges of his mouth, as he approached what he recognized as a soft sobbing sound.

Pressing her face further into the dirt wall as much as her horns would allow her to, Avia simply couldn't stop her sobbing. Everytime she went to tell herself to just breathe and calm herself she could only get a few lonesome notes out before the cruel thoughts came back to her. Why would no one believe her? She had all the right parts, and even when she told them what she was, they still denied it. It had always been this way, but with time others grew tired of her insistence and they grew mean. They became unkind and taunting words, and as of late they had gotten even worse. Now, there was no cover-up and there was no pity, only hatred and humiliation.

She was a bird. And yet they argued her.

As for the approaching stranger... well, the mare was too absorbed in her thoughts to notice. In this state she would probably have to be directly confronted to be stirred enough to even open her eyes.

Horus could hear the sounds of sobs. Some poor distressing...girl? Yes, a girl. He smiled widely. Likely she was upset about something trivial though it could be major. She'd be down and out, feeling oh so misunderstood...

And that's where he stepped in.

He'd come in with kindness and understanding and make her feel completely at ease. He'd console her poor little misunderstood soul. She'd feel better, he'd dry her eyes and tell her she was just perfect as is. And she'd fall for every single word he said.

He could weave such an intricate tale of why she was who she was and because she wanted to believe it, it was all as good as new.

He approached the little area, a memory tickling at the back of his mind. He couldn't remember it quite...but soon maybe. He saw white clawed legs, black curtain of hair. He watched her eagerly as the pieces clicked in her mind. Could it be this was the girl that Grauen had got her books from all that time ago? Could it really be the small one named Avia?

"Are you okay?" He asked kindly, an expression of worry on his face.

The dirt was somewhat soothing against her skin, but even that was the tiniest spark of brightness in her world at the moment. But then, then there was a voice.

A sweet voice, and it was talking to her.

Turning her head and tilting it so her curtain of black hair fell to the side, revealing... most of her face. And the face she stared into was a kind one, one that was there just for her. At least, that is how she felt at that dreary, dreary low.

She sniffled once and then nodded, trying to make herself smile to him, to dry up her tears, anything so that he would not run away. She needed someone, anyone, to be here for her. She needed someone like she'd never needed anything before. And he looked just like somebody that could fill that empty place.

He had a dark flowing mane, just like she did, and as she looked him over her eyes came to stop on the other similarity: He had claws. He had claws just like she did! Now that smile didn't come to be difficult to form anymore. Genuinely picked up by this simple similarity, she pulled herself forward but didn't quite make it to standing up before she caught herself and whispered, "My name is Avia. What's yours?"

Just like a book or a flower, she was planted there. Face drooping away from the sun, all nutrients denied her. Then with just the briefest sprinkling of words like water on her ears, she came alive. The wilted flower blossomed and there was that dangerous thing coming around and onto her face.

Oh yes, the dangerous look--not for him, but oh for her. For everyone who ever believed in that phantom called hope. Surely, she'd heard fairytales before. Probably believed in shining princes and castles...true love and saving and all other kinds of lies. It was always so easy to convince them that all the stories were true...but they never ever were.

So there she was looking at him like he was her saviour, like he'd slayed a dragon for her when he'd only merely just spoke. But he smiled back at her so graciously, so beguiling as if he was mesmerized and slightly dazed by the brilliance of being. "I'm Horus. Avia is such a lovely name. Sorry...maybe I shoudlnt' be so...imposing. But you looked so..." he looked away biting at his lip. "You look dejected, is there a way I can help?"

Her ears perked, eyes began to dry up as she calmed a little. Was this a knight in shining armor? Was this her knight in shining armor? She was ready to find out.

Gathering herself a little more, Avia tucked her legs under her and swiftly brought herself to standing in one gracefully hopeful moment. Was she hopelessly delusional? Perhaps it was better if she didn't question herself.

Blurting out her sort-of question, "You have claws too. How did you get them?"

Oh, how perfect she played into the compliment. She'd evidently not been fed them often, jumping to it like a frog to a fly. Her question was a simple one, very simple and yet....maybe the answer woudln't be quite so simple.

In his mind, he flipped through the page of a book to an old beloved story. "Well, it's the kidn we are..I am at least. There was a stallion named Illumanati who strove to save his love. He battled dragons though he was ill-equiped. He braved flames though his skin became burned. He went through desert and snow all just to get to her to find that a great gap seperated them. He was unable to cross it, no matter how hard he tried. He had not wings, and only hooves. But his love for the girl was so much that he would not stop trying to reach her.

"She was hysterical with crying when he ran and flung himself over the gap to reach her. His front hooves barely touched, but he clung promising not to let go. To hold on forever if so. He said simply that...if love was enough, he could hold on forever.

"Encouraged by his love, one of the greater Angenis--a type of goddess descended and bestowed upon him claws to hold on to his love and fight for it if need be, and wings to keep him from ever being seperated from her again."

His gaze returned as he looked down at her, waiting to see the effect the story had on her.

Horus had her attention as if he were the whole world, and nothing but him existed before her.

She walked into his lure willingly, silently listening to his answer as she subconsciously narrowed the space between them. A lovely story he retold for her to explain his claws. But it somehow didn't quite seem to be done. It explained that a certain kind earned their claws by the strength of will and love. But what did that mean of Horus? Was he just descended from such a stallion, or... she gasped and hoped against hope that it wasn't this second possibility.

Hesitating, she voiced her thought, "Did you earn your wings and claws like he did? For the one you love?" Her expression was both hopeful and sad at the same time. She did not want to find out that he had already found his love, but she could also understand that and hope that one day she could do the same.

The little fly was neatly caught in his web, all he had to do was spin her up and snack on her later--metaphorically. He looked down and sullen when she asked that question. "I have not been so lucky to have found someone to love. I don't know why...I was blessed with these...these ahead of time or if I need them to find her."

He looked up at her with a half sigh, and what could be a glistening tear in his eye. "Is that how you earned yours? By how and when your love came for you?" He paused a moment, a wisftul look in his eye as if to say, I was too late.

Her heart fluttered inside of her chest when she heard the good news. Well, to her it was good news, anyway, even though it could be a sad thing that he hadn't found his love yet.

Having grown up in safety, Avia had not encountered many dangerous situations, in fact the most threatening one was where she got bullied into relinquishing magical books that she had found, but that was about it, and that was when she was a filly. She was not a dangerous sort, not really. Sure, she could be adventurous or curious or even content to just wander without direction, but she had lived a calm life so far. So why should she be suspicious of this stranger? He seemed so sweet, afterall.

Quickly stepping closer, Avia replied instantly, "No, no!" Her words rushed out, excitement not really contained, "I haven't found him yet. I have my claws and wings, but..." she slowed down, when she bowed her head slightly to look down at her claws her curtain of hair fell over half of her face. More quietly she finished, "But I never knew how I got them, or why. They never believed that I was a bird."

Horus allowed his face to glow alight with happiness at her being single. It did make things easier to use her since she was free. It made everything so much easier. He listened to her voice fevered with excitement and delight. Hook, line and sinker--wasn't that the expression?

The little bird. She'd believed in some part that she was part avian, and in part she was just not bird like she thought. But he could work with this. "Well, we're bird-like but better. Birds are born to be genetically, but us...we were blessed with wings and claws by an Angeni. Much better to be blessed than born. We were created and molded so that we could find our other..."

He stepped closer to her, "Maybe it's why I'm here with you. Maybe...Well, maybe..." He let his voice trail off, letting her fill in the blanks with her excited mind.

She slowly tilted her head back up so that she could see his face, but not quite at her full height. She ate up his every word as if it were the very air to her breathing. At last she had found someone that understood. Someone that knew what she was and how she got her claws and wings!

Tasting the sentence she softly repeated it, helping it to sink in permanently, "Blessed by an Angeni..." She nodded lightly, that sounded right. That made sense to her. She believed it.

Her skin felt warm from her blush, but it wasn't really one of embarrassment, more from the excitement of this brand new possibility. Had she found someone for her, at last? Well, it's not like this stallion would go around and spend his days breaking the hearts of mares for fun.

She completed his sentence with what she knew was the right ending, "Maybe we were meant to find one another. Here. Today. Maybe we were meant to be together." And she was sold in her fantasy.
