Long ago, when the world was young, it was full of magic. From this magic was birthed many wonderful and frightening things. Faeries, Dragons, mermaids. Things that ran, swam and crawled. Things that were only spoken of in the safety of firelight. Though the most notable of these creations was the Unicorn. Being directly born of this wild thing called magic, the Unicorns are fiery magnificent creatures.
They were strong enough to defend the innocent and yet gentle enough to not crush a single petal, nor bend a single blade of grass with their passing. With their swirled horns they could take life or heal it.Their cloven hooves supplied them with a grace and nimbleness that was unrivaled among their fellow beings of magic. One of the most striking things about these magnificent creatures was the colors of their coats. That is to say, they were born in all the colors and patterns of creation. Each as individual as a star.
The world was a glorious place during the time of magic. But as happens to all things, the world began to mature. At first, man and magic lived in harmony. One supporting the other. Then, the race of man began to discover that they had the skills to manipulate the world around them without the use of Magic. The beginnings of technology were born. As more and more technology began to fill the world, man began to rely less and less on the Magic that had filled the land with life to begin with.
Magic became a thing that few people were able to touch. Eventually those very people that could wield the power of the world's creationist force began to be feared. They had the ability to do things that were considered beyond the normal human and that made them dangerous in the eyes of the people in power. Thus it was that the hunts to destroy anything of magic began. Anyone who showed even a touch of the gift to handle Magic was put to death. The creatures whose very life force depended on Magic were forced into hiding for fear of being killed as well. So it was that True Magic was forgotten and existed only in the quietest of whispers or the wildest of children's stories.
That, however, is not the end of the story. Merely the beginning. For you see, people that have known the beauty of Magic do not like to have to hide the wonders they know. As for the creatures born of Magic, they are proud and the exile did not sit well with them. So, unsure of what else to do, the outcasts all began to seek the purest of Magic's creation, the Unicorns. Even natural enemies were willing to hold their peace as they sought the advice of the Unicorns. So it was that all the beings who had or were of Magic came to be assembled together in one place.
Despite the fact that all had gathered, none had the courage to approach the Unicorns. Though the Unicorns were kind, gentle creatures they were held with such great reverence in those days that none dared to approach them. Finally, after a long wait, one little Wild Mage, who was no more than a slip of a girl, was chosen to go forward. A collective breath was held as she approached the waiting Unicorns.
Though she was frightened, the girl had no hesitance as she went forth to the first Unicorn that was standing a little apart from its Glory and set her hands in its silky mane.
"Please forgive us Great One," she began, "But we are all lost, hurt and confused. The world is rejecting us all, even yourselves, and we know not what to do. Is there any way you can help us?"
The Unicorn listened to her plea before laying her horn across the girl's shoulder and replying "I know not what we could do on our own to help you all, little one. But if we work together I am sure we can figure something out."
The girl was then charged by the Unicorns to gather a few brilliant minds who had the strongest connections with Magic and bring them into a council with the wisest of the Unicorns. They talked for many days and, just as the crowd was becoming impatient of waiting, they settled on a plan. It was the little Wild Mage herself who had come up with it.
"You are all creatures of Magic." she confronted the Unicorns. "Magic is the force of creation. Can we not all work together to create a safe world for all of us?"
Careful preparations were made and the most primal of the Unicorns were chosen to do this Great Working. One for each of the elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water. The little Mage girl was chosen to represent Spirit as she was the driving force behind all of it. It took them three days and three nights to finish. On the dawn of the fourth day the sun rose upon a clearing of four collapsed Unicorns and a young girl. All fast asleep. None knew whether they had succeeded. Food and drink were laid out close at hand for when they awoke but none dared to disturb them.
It was another three days before the forms in the clearing began to stir. It didn't take long for word to spread of the the success of creating, if not a full world, at least the seed of one. Once the Girl was recovered enough to stand she went to present herself before the entire gathered mass. Holding her cupped hands for all to see she declared
"We have only just begun! We now need the help of all of you. We all need to combine our efforts, thinking of what would make a perfect home for each of us."
With that she went down among them holding the seed carefully but in a way that those who were curious could see. She directed everyone to touch, making sure none were left out. Including all of the mer-folk who had made their way up the rivers to be included. While everyone touched, she directed them to think only of what a good home would be like. None knew how long they stood concentrating before they were all shaken by a staggering force. Then everyone was falling and knew nothing more.
When the Wild Mage awoke she found her head cushioned on a silky flank. As she blinked the sleep from her eyes she began to take in her surroundings. There were the branches of great trees overhead and the calls of animals she had never heard before filled the air. She sat up and realized she had been sleeping on the first Unicorn she had had contact with. Around them other Unicorns stood guard. It took her but a moment to recognize that they were the Primordials, as she had begun to think of them.
"Oh, good. You are awake." her pillow stated before standing and shaking.
"Your Majesty,"One of the guards said, "Your glory awaits you."
The girl looked to her companion with surprise causing the Unicorn to laugh with a tinkling bell-like sound and confirm that she was, indeed, the Queen.
The girl stayed with the Glory as everyone was learning to explore and enjoy their new world. From the Unicorns she learned that everyone they had met so far had managed to end up in a place most suited for their needs. As there were so many that had come with them there was no way of knowing how large the world was or how far spread all of the different beings were. While everyone was happily celebrating their new freedom, the girl felt a tugging at her heart. Eventually her thoughts turned to those who may still be trapped on the old world. This inspired in her a restlessness and a feeling of needing to go seek those others.
So it was with determination, and a little regret, that the girl bid the Unicorns farewell and set out to discover a way back into their old home world. It didn't take her long to find a way. It wasn't even a difficult way at that, with her ability to work with Magic. She was soon able to move easily back and forth between the worlds. In her travels she did come across those who were left behind in the great migration and set about to finding them all and taking them to their new home.
Though this is not the end of the story, it is the end of my tale.
