Ami hit the dummy one more time before the incessant buzzing in her pocket could no longer be ignored. The worst part? She knew exactly who it was from. Exactly. To a T.

Nobody texted her on the island. Nobody had a reason to. The occasional mission text from Caelius. The occasional duty roster. Never for leisure.

She groaned stuck Junpei in the ground, and pulled out the poor buzzing, blinking machine.

From: Madeline

Did you know a human head remains aware for about 15 to 20 seconds after decapitation? Neat huh!

A groan escaped Ami's mouth. That was just what she needed to think about. EXACTLY what she needed, thanks Maddie. Thanks for that. She was really starting to get sick of this girl and her ridiculous medical texts coming at the worst moments.

< Wow, really? That's kind of cool. >

Swear to God, I will stick you back on that wall-

< Nah, it'd kill you. >

Ami sighed and typed a message back to her.

Oh, ok! I will be over there soon! OH I CAN SEE YOU FROM HERE, HI.

If Madeline understood the demand from Ami's text message than she sure as s**t didn't bother to pay attention to it. Jogging across the training field to her newly made something-or-other, Madeline beamed, slowing to a halt and shaking out her hair from her eyes, auburn curls spilling from a tight bun.

"Oh, Jumpy is really something, isn't he?" She said, admiring the glaive for a moment before her eyes flickered back to Ami.

"Hey, does your offer for a spar still stand?" She waggled her fingers at the intermediate trainee, anchor bracelet jangling.

( You're gonna get your a** kicked, sweet thing. ) Arsen put in unhelpfully.

Shut the ******** up and be optimistic.

Ami stared at her phone in horror. Oh no. No no no. She was summoning the thing without even meaning to. Ami ran a hand through her hair, which was pulled up in a tight bun on her head. Why the ******** did Madeline always know where she was?

"Junpei," Ami corrected, and then her eyes went wide. Wait a second. She was the one who was supposed to do the correcting! Junpei on the other hand, was laughing quietly in her mind. "Ah ... just ... nevermind that."

She pried the glaive out of the ground, leaving a small wavy indent in the ground. "He's not much, really. Lacking even."

< Heyyyy. I like her! >

Your opinion couldn't matter less.

< She likes me, she likes me. >

Ami put one hand on the bridge of her nose and said, "Summon your weapon first, dumbass."

Folding her arms over her middle, Madeline let her hips sway to one side, looking a little worse for wear, like she'd just been running around all morning training and trying not to fall over in mud and dirt.

"Oh ~" She tilted her head at the glaive, "could've sworn you'd said Jumpy last time." She laughed freely, her mouth splitting into a curious grin. "Cute name."

She tilted her head as the weapon was yanked out of the ground, admiring Junpei before blinking. "Lacking? No, he's much pretty than Arsen."

( Don't go breakin' my heart so soon in the morning, sugar. )

Babe, you don't have a heart to break.

Bobbing her head at the instructions, Madeline paused and lifted her head just a bit indignantly. "I'm smarter than a lot of people, thank you ~" She said, her lips quirking into a mildly ridiculous grin before summoning Arsenios. She'd done it enough for it to feel familiar to her now, but she always managed to give the baseball bat overgrown mace an appreciative glance or two before her attention turned back to Ami.

"Shall we go by your leave then, miss?" She asked, holding Arsen much like a baseball bat instead of a spiked club that could easily decapitate a man.

Ami heaved Junpei so he was in front of her, a neutral position, but a prepared one. She'd never fought someone below her level. Was this supposed to be educational? Ami wasn't sure if she could do the whole teaching thing.

"Well since we're already here ..." she said, rolling Junpei nervously. This would be awkward if she couldn't pull it off. "Just don't get stupidly injured. I'm not filing another medical report."

Seriously, with how much suffering the hunters went through? It got old.

Watching Ami thoughtfully, Madeline let her lips pull upwards into a wicked grin. This would be fun! ... And hopefully Ami wouldn't kick her a**.

( Too hard at least. )

Madeline gritted her teeth. Be positive. She told Arsenios sardonically. Because she totally was. "Hey," The sun trainee retorted, her smile quirking into a shark-toothed grin, "I'm more resilient than I look, doll. Don't hold anythin' back."

Hefting Arsen from her shoulder, she readied him into a stance similar to Ami's - ready to either take the offensive or the defensive. Whichever came first.

Let the suffering games begin.

Well wasn't this girl cocky? She was going up against an intermediate as a complete newbie, and she was saying for Ami to try hard? Honestly Ami would've been offended if it didn't sound so much like herself as a trainee.

Ami swung Junpei, just inches from Madeline's head, and then twisted at the last moment so it ran parallel to her cheeks and missed entirely. It was a warnig shot over the bough.

She held Junpei neutrally again and said, "Never underestimate your opponent."

< Unholy s**t you could've cut off her head! >

And that's my problem because ...?

"Woah!" Madeline tilted back to avoid the glaive, despite it being little more than a warning shot. "Hey now - if you're trying to test that fun fact I sent you, believe me, its true, and my head would not look good decapitated, doll."

Smiling, she hefted up Arsen, settling him in front of her and pointing the spikes in Ami's direction. "I'm not underestimating you, I promise." She said, winking at the girl.

( Stop talking and play, sugar. ) Arsenios barked rudely, in the middle of whatever she might have been trying to say next.

Okay, fine, time to get down to business.

Madeline steadied herself and lunged, the club heavy in her arms as she caught herself and pivoted, swinging at Ami, hoping that she wasn't gonna be complete s**t at this.

Ami dodged left, ecstatic that the weapon's swing was so slow because of its weight. The spike grazed her arm, but it was nothing. She was silently grateful that although Junpei was large, he wasn't particularly heavy.

In the lull time where Madeline balanced her weapon, Ami struck, jabbing the glaive forward into Madeline's leg. She twisted, retracting the weapon as she pivoted out of the way.

Junpei balanced behind her on one hand, while she stuck the other out. "You did it anyways."

"Oh! Wow!"

Okay, Ami had some skills.

Madeline gritted her teeth and hopped back, pushing away the pain in her leg to steady herself again. "Faster," She muttered to herself, steadying the club in front of her before puffing her cheeks and swinging forward again, letting Arsen's weight pull her forward.

After all, there wasn't much to do with a club that wasn't straight forward right now. At least much to do that she knew so far.

Ami calmly sidestepped the lazy swing, and a smile actually crossed her face. A ******** smile. Be prepared for the apocalypse Maddie. It's coming now.

She idly moved Junpei in front of her, taking a more defensive position.

"Stop swinging it around like some little kid at his junior league game," she said harshly, "One you look idiotic, but two it's throwing off your balance." She gestured to the club and said, "The weight's on the end of it, not the center like a baseball bat, so you can't use it like that."

Junpei was perpendicular to her body now, a calm block across her body. "Figure out a way around it, little league." Yeah, Ami wasn't going to be the friendly senpai that helped you out. You had to learn yourself.

"Hmmm."

Madeline blinked down at her weapon, staring hard at Arsen and adjusting her grip - if Ami listened hard enough she might hear the gears in her head whirring as she played around with ideas. "Shh, I'm still new to all of this." She said, glancing back up, cheeks puffing.

( And you're an idiot. )

Shh.

Rumbling, Madeline hefted Arsen again, her stance shifting a bit to accomodate the large weapon. Now, how to attack?

AKA yes senpai!

Pushing herself towards Ami again, Madeline shifted her weight, focusing on a blow to Ami's shoulder in an attempt at a better approach.

... At least she was getting somewhere.

Ami wasn't surprised when the girl came lurching forward in the exact same way. It always took a few tries before you really got a new attack style down. It wasn't like Madeline was going to change in two seconds.

What did surprise her was how the girl focused the attacked on a certain unguarded point- her shoulder. From the shock of the attack, the hand connected to the shoulder dropped Junpei, leaving only one hand holding it awkwardly upright.

It was a good attack, honestly it was, but Ami had been here longer. With the single hand she had left, she loosened her grip on the staff and kicked the other end of it out with her foot, sending the longer end of the staff pummeling into Madeline's stomach.

"It could've been worse," she said, regaining her grip on Junpei. That was as close to a compliment as Madeline was going to get. She noticed the weapon was humming slightly, and cryptically said, "Listen to your weapon."

It wasn't like Madeline wasn't used to Arsenios being a total p***k or anything - only that now he was being overbearingly loud. Half of what he was saying wasn't even intelligible and it was really, really starting to wear on her focus.

Did hunters have to deal with this all the time?

"Thanks! And I'm listening - it's kind of painful right now," She said with a half grin, twisting Arsen between her gloved fingers. Sucking in a deep breath, she tried to push her own ego into the middle of Arsen's rumbling words.

( Feed me. Let me. Here. )

The demand was thick and haughty and angry.

Madeline flicked her eyes towards Ami, puffing her cheeks at the cryptic message. Okay, fine.

The sudden surge of power came as a surprise, but Madeline was flowin' with it. She twisted her body to accomodate the large weapon, a melee of heavy blows raining down on Ami instead of just one this time, until Madeline felt her arms return to noodle-status and let out a little yell, bouncing back again.

"That wasn't a compliment," Ami said, right before Madeline came running at her with a plethora of swift blows to both Junpei and her weak points. THAT was a FEAR charge. Good girl Madeline, you're learning.

Ami was heaving and panting at this point, attempting to fend off the blows left and right. She waited calmly though, for Madeline to trip up. To take that extra step of balance. To falter and swing too far into it. Anything- an opening.

There!

Madeline completed an arc with her club, and Ami stepped back, grabbing Junpei with two hands and swinging him like a baseball bat into Madeline's side- the side without a large club in it.

"Still too cocky."
