Parting from Phiel and We'rika, Cesc drifted through the maze's entrance with Xiu, turning behind him just slightly to make sure the silent other was beside him. He caught sight of the other Raevans pairing up and making their way inside as well -- there was Melisande and Rivener, and Zurine, ah, was she alone? No, surely she had found someone friendly, too, hadn't she? They were all moving forward together, Cesc noticed, making him wonder if the selection of pairs was really even a necessity! Maybe they were all going to go as a group, perhaps getting separated along the way...?

But, as the pair took their first turn into the maze, all the others seemed to simply... disappear somewhere within the tall, leafy walls. It was as if a calm hush descended upon them, a ceiling of mist blanketing them, lush greenery in all directions. Cesc didn't notice until after he put his left hand against the closest wall as per Xiu's earlier idea, his eyes taking in the understated beauty of the maze, his fingers comfortable against the cool leaves. He turned his head toward Xiu and then noticed -- they were alone.

In the quiet, so close to Xiu, Cesc could feel it again, the niggling feeling in the back of his mind, the absence that he could feel emanating from within the white sigel. It was muffled somehow, unintelligible. Or did it just feel that way now, after the sharp, dizzying cry that was the muse's hurt? Rhedefre forcibly turned his mind from it. This was not -- was patently not the time.

He smiled. It was a comfortable atmosphere, encouraging conversation. Who knows what would come up? He was eager to know the other better, so self-contained and good natured Xiu seemed. Cesc drifted forward, his fingers dragging gently against the leaves.

"This is really quite amazing," he said, his voice filed with a quiet wonder. "The doctor really outdid his -- oh."

The syllables died on the stag's tongue as his eyes went back to the path -- a path which, just as suddenly and fascinatingly as it had opened for them, closed again. A solemn, tall wall stretched before the duo. Wrong way, it said silently.

By the time Cesc and Xiu had arrived at the maze’s entrance, the crowd was already starting to enter in pairs. Xiu recognized more than a couple of them as they walked (well, the raevans floated) in. For the most part, everyone was laughing and chatting away. There was a jovial atmosphere to be felt as the group made their way into the maze. Not wanting to lose Cesc in the crowd, Xiu hurried over to the other’s side. He had not seen Lazarus. Perhaps the Sigel was still at the grill? Xiu felt a twinge of regret. It seemed almost unfair that the firey one would be left tending to the meat alone. But then again, Lazarus had made it perfectly clear that the white Sigel should participate in the garden maze event.

The crowd was beginning to disperse as each pair of participants went on their separate ways through the maze. The Sigel glanced up and noticed the uncommonly heavy mist forming above the maze, muffling most sounds and giving the whole environment a noticeably eerie feel. Was this...natural? Or had the Doctor done something fishy again?

Looking ahead, Xiu realized that he was being addressed by the frei. Giving a nod in agreement to Cesc’s remark, Xiu was just about to write a reply when the frei uttered a soft exclamation. Looking up sharply Xiu at once realized what had happened. The path which the both of them had chosen had closed in on them, cutting them off from the group.

The White Sigel did not like this one bit; regardless of how calm the frei might seem to be. Grey wings which were once held at ease were now tightly pinned against his back as Xiu tried to keep the image of lonesome graveyards at bay.

That strategy we discussed earlier... the Sigel wrote It might not work here with the maze shifting like this .

For all he knew, they would end up walking in circles if they tried that method.

By now, the Raevans had probably realized that the maze seemed to have a life of it's own, being able to shift it's walls as they see fit, cutting the duo from the rest of the group, isolating them. Despite the dread, a string of buds started to grow and bloom into tiny white flowers on the wall that had appeared before them. When it stops a moment later, the flowers formed three words on the wall - Take another path. And just as silently as the wall appeared, a few openings appeared behind the Raevans.

"You're right," Cesc agreed quietly, reading Xiu's notepad. The entirety of the maze around them seemed different somehow -- the solemnity of the hedges, the unerring, unbroken perfection of each tiny leaf... there was no blemish anywhere. It was haunting, unnatural, and so everyday wisdom was not going to help them here. His hand dropped from the greenery, back to his side.

Then, as if in response, the maze communicated! Cesc's ears twitched gently in surprise, his eyebrows lifting into his hair. He looked at Xiu with half-shocked amusement, his smile wry. "Wow," he breathed, floating back from the flowery message and turning to go back the direction they'd come. A thought occurred to him, warming his eyes with humor. "Well, let us hope the maze likes us. If it doesn't, we might be stuck here a little while. It is a little like Alice in Wonderland, don't you think?"

Looking over at Xiu, Cesc instantly regretted the words -- the other did not seem to be enjoying the overall feeling the maze gave off, his shoulders tense and his expression one of concern. Certainly they weren't in any danger, were they? The doctor wouldn't gather all the Raevans, just to put them in harm's way, certainly not. It was just the feeling, the feeling of magic drifting all around them, the feeling of such sudden and complete isolation. It was difficult to relax in.

The claustrophobic feeling that had begun to creep over the white Sigel ever since the maze shifted itself right before their eyes was not made better when word forming flowers began to appear across the maze’s newly formed wall.

Take another path the words said, in that ominous and indifferent feeling of theirs. To Xiu, it felt as though the two of them were being played with. The feeling intensified when several options opened up to them, each one beckoning and each one having the same uncertain feeling to them.

But...looking at Cesc’s concerned eyes, Xiu immediately regretted his actions. It would not do to worry the Frei like this. For all he knew, this would be just a harmless joke of the Doctor. He was the host of this event after all and he was certainly capable of magic. But to blatantly use magic like this...

Xiu shook his head and gave Cesc an uneasy smile.

You must forgive me. Being enclosed like this with the thick fog.... it makes me uneasy

It made him remember...

Wings still folded tightly against his back, Xiu motioned that Cesc should choose the next path.

As the Raevans turn into a new path, they found a group of pigeons of about thirty pecking at the dirt floor before them, cooing softly. However when the pigeons realized the Raevan's presence, the whole flock took flight over their heads, raining down a bombardment of bird poop.

Cesc nodded in understanding to Xiu's written words. It was strange, to be so completely enclosed, so completely cut off from others. He did not mind it, himself -- there was a bizarre sort of peace to it that spoke deeply to him, and he did not mind, truly did not fear, being lost. Some part of him acknowledged the possibility, even welcomed it. Inside, somewhere, it made him feel confident.

But Xiu, he could see, clearly did not share his own feelings. There was something that rolled from him that tugged at Cesc's mind, so much more pressing than anything in the maze. It was that unnamed absence again... what WAS it? What had happened to the sigel?

"Don't mention it. But at least, we are together." Rhedefre smiled reassuringly. What could he do to make Xiu feel more at ease? Perhaps some easy conversation would break the tension -- perhaps if they were not so focused on the surroundings, then the other would feel morer relaxed? Cesc nodded toward the middle of their three options, already beginning to float toward it. Quickly, he saw the group of pigeons enjoying themselves in the middle of the path, and his eyes brightened. They were not alone, here were some other living creatures! He turned to Xiu, about to speak, when the pigeons spooked, flying overhead and... AND...

SPLAT!

SPLATSPLATSPLAT!

A torrent -- an absolute MESS of bird poop showered over them!

Cesc was frozen, his arms held out from his body, his sunlit eyes open wide with pure shock. He did not even watch the birds disappear into the mist above them, so stunned was he by the random attack the birds had seen fit to hurl at them. Dear lord! The -- the smell -- the consistency of the stuff as it slid down one of his shoulders! His ears flattened against his head, and he slowly lifted his eyes to meet Xiu's.

A laugh began to thrum through him, uneasy at first and then far more strong, his shoulders shaking as he flicked his soiled hands at the hedges and then combed the poop out of his hair. It continued, musical and clear, as he unbuttoned and slid off his vest, shaking it out toward the maze, and then dealt with his cravat, doing the same. The randomness, the weirdness of it all! What -- just -- what?!

"Oh, no..." Cesc gasped, his voice still weak from mirth, moving to help Xiu tidy himself. "I think we disturbed a family reunion. But they got their revenge, I think." He shook his head, pulling off a larger leaf from the maze hedge and using it to help clean, his smile still wide and helplessly amused. "Maybe it's best if you choose our next path."

So much for tension!

The flock of pigeons blocking their path certainly took Xiu by surprise. Were these actual birds then? How did they come to be here?

Blue eyes stared at those feathered creatures suspiciously. If only he knew for sure...

Then, as though reading his mind, the flock took off. The thunderous sounds of flapping wings filled the misty maze and for an instant, those awkward moving birds actually looked...majestic.

But that image was soon replaced by one of pressing concern. The flock (if it was even possible), seemed to have developed a kind of mass diarrhoea as soon as they took off. Splatters of pigeon poop were raining down just as the last of the pigeons took flight.

Horrified, Xiu had just enough time to shield his head with his arms before the rain of poop struck. Splatters of warm, organic smelling gunk pelted the two raevans for what seemed to be a good few minutes. Horrified, Xiu let out a silent groan as some of the poop dribbled down the back of his neck and into his collar. His clothes would smell for a week! And the stains!

When the last of the diarrhoeal pigeons had left, Xiu chanced a glance at his newfound friend. Blue eyes stared in surprised as Cesc began to laugh; chuckling at first before it developed into a first class guffaw of amusement. The white Sigel wondered for a moment if Cesc had indeed lost his mind due to the horror of...

But no. His eyes were sane enough and his laughter infectious. Xiu was finding it harder and harder to keep a straight face. Come to think of it, there was a certain irony to this event...

And now that Xiu saw the joke, he was laughing along heartily with the pink haired frei while flicking his wings vigorously to remove the gunk. His outer clothes were a mess but his inner ones seemed to be safe from the worst of it.

Gingerly removing his outer robe and bundling it up as best as he could, Xiu allowed Cesc to help him remove some of the poop that had dirtied his hair. Really. This was too much.

When Cesc suggested that perhaps he should choose, Xiu gave their available options a thoughtful glance. Which path should they take now?

With the maze being as unfathomable as it is, let's hope we find a place to clean ourselves a little wrote Xiu with better humour than he had been prior to being splattered. I know I’d appreciate that

Picking a rather broad and well kept looking path, Xiu approached his choice warily.

It's no lie that this is a beautifully kept area. The walls are immaculate, the grass is trimmed, and everything just seems perfect for the day's events. This is why it's so odd that this path you've walked into is so unkempt. The grass is knee high and uneven, the walls are running wild with branches stretching in front of your face, roots are twisted above the ground, and there's a number of insects, squirrels, and stones dotting the path ahead. Perhaps the gardener just forgot about this section of the maze - it is pretty large after all.

"Yes... a lake or something would be nice," Cesc agreed, floating alongside Xiu as they took their new path, a high-humored smile still firmly on his face. He was glad that Xiu had laughed as well, considering the extreme ridiculousness of their shared situation. As he rolled up his sleeves, trying to preserve what cleanliness he could, he mused that he was glad to have met the sigel, and to have him as a partner in the maze.

But soon, the broad and well-kept path they chose became... narrow, and not so well kept. Twigs split in the crook of Cesc's antlers as the two passed, and the grass became higher and higher. Animals scurried as they continued through, and slowly Cesc began to have a hell of a time making sure neither of them went right into a tree-branch. Scratches lined his arms and hands, and he became somewhat bewildered.

"Well," he said as the path split into a T, "It's ... more natural, at least? But no lake here." He shook his head with a faint, wry grin. "I am starting to believe this maze does not like people with good grooming."

Unconsciously, he floated toward the left side of the T-junction; that turn seemed less generally overgrown and disheveled than the right.

I am inclined to agree with you on this wrote Xiu as he hefted a rather wiry branch aside for the both of them to pass through. The low hanging branches made sure that neither raevans could float above the tall grass and avoid being assaulted by a variety of weed seeds. Already what clothing he still kept on was covered with love-grass and other bits of plant matter. The occasional bug got caught in his hair.

But surprisingly, the white Sigel preferred this physical challenge to the psychological ones. Here, you had enough on your hands to deal with without letting your imagination run wild. Besides, despite the unkempt nature of the maze, the walls were far apart and the feeling of claustrophobia was ebbing away little by little.

Soon, the duo reached the end of this challenging garden to find a T-Junction awaiting them. Xiu held some measure of apprehension as the Frei floated over to the better kept of the two roads. After all, that was what he himself did earlier right? And look where that had gotten them?

But maybe...Cesc would have better luck with this.

Dusting the last bit of tangled leaf off him, Xiu followed Cesc’s lead. What do you think we would find here?

"Your guess is as good as mine," Cesc replied, his ears flicking in an attempt to rid his hair of any remaining leaves or broken twigs. The two of them made an amusing pair -- so calm and well-dressed entering the maze, and now, look at them! They looked as if they had been camping for weeks, or rolled in a muddy embankment somewhere. When they got back to the party, they would certainly not make for very fetching guests...

... but this new pathway was looking a bit better now, with the reaching branches slowly receding back toward the maze's walls, and the grass gradually becoming lower. Perhaps they had entered some sort of calm area? With the relative jungle behind them and the earlier tension of claustrophobia broken, Cesc felt freer to talk with his new friend.

"Do you think the doctor had a purpose in inviting us into this maze?" he wondered aloud, his eyes reflecting as he looked up at the mist that hovered so opaquely above them. He looked back at Xiu, genuinely interested in the other's opinion -- Xiu was older, after all, and had obviously been through... many things. "I know you have seen more of these parties... does he do this kind of thing a lot?"

It seems that Cesc had better luck at choosing their paths; the tangled heap that had been the maze only moments before was starting to look better groomed. Already the grass was becoming tamer and the branches had receded back beyond the maze’s outer wall. For that at least, Xiu was thankful.

Cesc’s question however, was an interesting one. Xiu had, on more than one occasion, pondered over this very same question as they traversed the garden maze. Was there an agenda behind the doctor’s apparently innocent maze set up? Was he trying to test the raevans? Beings that had been...created by him?

No, this maze challenge is the first I have experienced wrote Xiu, choosing to answer the second question first. Usually it’s just a gathering of sorts. Good food, good music; harmless games...

Guess the Doctor got bored of that wrote Xiu as an afterthought. Well, after being able to create life, this should hardly come off as a challenge for him, right?

I just hope we finish this looking no worse than we are now wrote Xiu wryly. Already I am yearning for clean clothes and a hot bath
