The stage was set. Today would be the day that she finally put her lessons into practice. Midnight's Whisper stared out towards the empty plain beyond her as she kept a lookout. The crashing sound from behind her startled her. She turned around to witness the arrival of her younger, and only, sister as she bumbled her way through the branches. "Can't you be any quieter Coda? I only let you tag along because I felt sorry for leaving you behind with mother and father. This is a stealth mission. If it fails it's because you were being far too noisy."
Midnight didn't care to realize that her harsh words had cut deeply into her sibling's psyche. She had already turned her attention back to the empty landscape. A sneer was cast towards the path that she knew her prey would take. Nightsaber had helped her in this task. Her hawk familiar had scoped out the pathways and had relayed his findings back to her.

Coda blanched as she broke another twig. How was it that her sister managed to move through the woods without a sound? She was envious of her older sibling's abilities and the attention that father seemed to lavish on her. She was truly her father's child. Coda was quiet and withdrawn. She had jumped at this chance for a little night time adventure that her sister had been planning. Apparently they were going to surprise someone?
She hadn't quite figured out her sister's target before Midnight had sauntered off. Tonight, according to her sister's purposeful stride, was the night that everything was set in place for the meeting. Who was the unlucky individual who was going to get a taste of Midnight's wrath? Coda was actually excited to find out. The tongue lashing that Midnight delivered though was not part of her excitement. Coda felt a sense of betrayal at her sibling's words. It cut deeply inside to know that her elder sister only felt pity for her. Sulking silently Coda let her eyes adjust to the darkness as she tried to hide the hurt expression on her face.

As Coda shuffled into place just slightly behind her Midnight grimaced. Her plans had not included a tag-along. But maybe it was better this way. The mare gave a mental shrug. Time could only tell.
Almost as if right on cue a stallion emerged from the woods and made his way tentatively onto the plains proper. Midnight knew that tonight had been the right night to stalk her prey. Slowly, and without pausing to see if Coda followed, did she emerge haltingly from the shadows that had concealed her form; so far so good. The unicorn stallion had had no notice of her whatsoever. Midnight took in the stallion's vibrant orange mane and tail before emitting an angry sounding snort. It was almost comical how fast the reaction time was. Midnight chuckled as she gave the other stallion another look over. "So I finally meet you face to face. What's the matter brother; skinwalker got your tongue?"

Coda was too busy to notice that her sister had slipped out onto the open ground before them. She decided that depending on what was going on she would leave Midnight to deal with it on her own. She didn't need to be bossed around continuously. She could easily go back towards home and the feeling of being wanted for just who she was ... not someone who thought she was nothing but a hassle.
Those thoughts all went flying out the door as she heard Midnight's words on the slight breeze that had sprung up. Her gaze took in the stranger's appearance before registering what it was Midnight had called him. This stallion was her brother? How was that possible?
Coda emerged from the brush that had kept her form hidden as she locked gazes with the stallion. He couldn't be family; could he?

Precaution had taken a back seat to deep thought. Orion was always glad to take little excursions now and then to try and puzzle out what it was he was thinking about. He was glad for the time he spent with Katell and the occasional visit from his children but sometimes one needed alone time. It was how he found himself meandering a path so familiar to him that he barely had to look around for any threats. He'd found this little trail before meeting his mate and had traveled its length time and again since.
So when a voice broke him out of his thoughts it was with such surprise that he made a startled motion. A dark-pelted mare stood before him blocking the trail and he gave her a confused glance. Why was she here? Who was she? Orion had his second surprise of the night as the mare uttered her words. His eyes opened wide in shock. He had remembered a time when he had seen his mother with foal. Perhaps this mare was his half-sister. An interesting development one would think. The arrogance that she displayed though wasn't very common though. As he mused he watched another mare appear from the edge of the forest and stand behind the first. She seemed a little at ease with the first and Orion had to stop himself from shaking his head in amazement. When he spoke he directed his words to the first mare; the one that had addressed him.
"No. A skinwalker does not have my tongue. Nor would I ever let one get that close to me. You have addressed me as your brother but I believe that to be a half-truth. I know for a fact that you are my half-sister," he dipped his head towards the second mare, "as you might be as well. I know this for truth even if you deny it."

Midnight gave an angry sounding snort. Why did he bother to try and correct her? It was always irritating when a male tried to assume he knew better. Midnight glared at her half-brother before she rolled her eyes. "Fine. So you can talk. I guess I spoke too soon." Midnight's voice was tinged with a little bit of sarcasm, "so what brings you out into our neck of the woods dearest brother?"
Midnight wouldn't be bothered to introduce herself until she felt the time was right. She tried to catch Coda's eye to signal her not to say anything. She took in Coda's stance before realizing that her idea might be backfiring. She'd wanted to control this meeting but it looked like Coda would spoil everything.

Coda was intrigued by this stallion's words. He was Midnight's half-brother. That would make him family. She peered around her sister's frame to get a better look at the stranger. Even Midnight's brief look towards her did nothing to deter her next action. Pausing only a minute in hesitation Coda stepped beyond Midnight's range.
Her eyes drank in the sight of her newly discovered half-brother before giving him a soft smile. "You speak correctly. Since I'm related to that old fuss-pot behind me that we would be related as well." Coda could hear Midnight's groan behind her and she grinned. Anything to disrupt Midnight's plans was a bonus in her books.
"My name is Sunset's Coda. I don't suppose I should keep calling you half-brother."

Orion turned his head to the second mare that spoke more pleasantly than the first had. He took in the appearance of his younger half-sister. She was quite a beauty. Orion gave her a smile as she introduced herself. It seemed that she was harboring a sense of humor as well.
"Greetings then to you Sunset's Coda. I am curious to know your sister's name but for now I'll let it be. I am Orion's Verse." Orion dipped his head to Coda before raising his eyes to look around. He seemed to be scanning the horizon, as if he were looking for something. Finally he returned his attention to his sisters. "Are there any more of you around? I'd like to meet my extended family all at once."
Orion watched the pair in silence. If he had to choose between dealing with one or the other he would have already made his decision. Coda exuded a seemingly air of friendliness and sincerity.

Orion's Verse, what sort of name was that? Midnight ground her teeth a little. For some odd reason the knowledge that there was something else between this stallion and herself besides shared blood made her own blood boil. How was it that her mother had managed to find someone else besides father to settle down with?
The now silent, fuming mare took in Coda's eager expression. It looked as though her sister was actually enjoying this meeting. Midnight huffed silently and cast her gaze to the horizon. Why hadn't this meeting gone to plan?
She had wanted to confront Orion but instead it seemed as if she'd been pushed to the rear by her own sister and their half brother. How could she take control of this meeting again?

Coda cast a quick glance back towards Midnight when she heard the other mare grinding her teeth. It was clear obvious that her sister was not content to be spoken of like she wasn't around. The mare shrugged. If her sister wanted to pout then why try to stop her. Coda returned her attention to Orion. "I don't really know where the rest of the family is. My sister's two brothers and my two brothers are most likely off gallivanting through the lands. I could tell you their names. That is if you are interested."
She would let Orion think on this decision. As she waited, Coda breathed softly. Here was extended family that she had never known about until this night. It was sort of like a dream come true. At the same time she couldn't help but wonder why their mother never told her children about the other side of the family.

Orion hadn't forgotten about the sullen and hostile mare that hid now behind Coda. However it seemed as if she still refused to say anything to him. Was she sulking? Orion refocused his attention on his friendlier half sister before canting his head to the side. According to the quick count that he'd done as Coda spoke this meant that he also had four other half-brothers roaming the land. Orion was slightly taken aback. His mother had been blessed with a rather large and mixed family line. Would she even know of just how far her family now extended?
If only he could see her again. Orion gazed thoughtfully. Coda had offered to name her siblings. The stallion was curious. It was with a silent dip of his horn towards Coda that indicated she should continue. "Go on sister. Let me hear the names."

Whoa. Hold it. Midnight's head snapped up as Coda was going to willingly give their half-brother information that shouldn't come freely. However it seemed that it was already too late as Orion asked for Coda to proceed. It was with a not so polite shove that Midnight pushed her sister off balance. Coda stumbled briefly before checking her position. Midnight cackled softly as Coda turned her head to glare at her. The expression didn’t faze Midnight at all. Her sister was, still very much, a big pushover.
Midnight's gaze snapped and bored down to meet Orion's own gaze. She gaze the stallion a lazy smile before flicking her tail to silence her sister. "Why should we just give you information freely dearest brother? Why oh why should we do this? What is in it for us? Will you reciprocate and tell us what we want to know?"

She was just about to turn back to converse silently with Midnight when she heard Orion acquiesce to the knowledge that she wanted to share and that he wanted to know. She grinned softly. It seemed as if she was making more headway with being friendly than Midnight had with being confrontational. She had just begun to start talking when she felt a hard jab into her side. Midnight had shoved her way back into the front and in the process had deliberately pushed her aside.
Coda knew that her sister was just trying to be protective of the family. But why did she have to be so pushy about it? She'd just about been ready to share the names of her family ... that was all. There was nothing harmful about it. Coda sighed before she caught Midnight's words. Coda mused silently, Midnight did have a point. Would Orion be willing to divulge information of the same sort?

Was he finally going to learn about the rest of his family? With six other siblings running around, including the mares that stood before him, the potential for forgetting the names would of course be present. Orion's horn flashed briefly as he turned his head and caught a ray of moonlight. It was at that moment that he realized a power struggle going on in silence between his sisters. The sullen one had once again moved to the fore and in the process had nearly knocked Coda over.
What was wrong with this mare? Why did she seem so adamant and hostile towards him? Orion listened carefully as the mare asked her own question of him. Would he reciprocate the sharing of knowledge? It wasn't like he had anything to hide from these semi-strangers. Orion cleared his throat before sighing. "I can agree to share what you wish to know. But first, I demand to know your name."
