Hot dry wind whipped across the plains, and the buzz of insects the overriding sound. Not the grass in the wind and not the hooves running off in the distance. Tail flicking back and forth, Madi rested on his back, trying to ignore the fact that the heat was making his fur itch. More than normal anyway.

Paw lifted to swat at a small bird come to try and get bugs from his fur the lion figured that it was a good a time as ever to move. The sun would be going down soon, and hunting then would be a mixed bag. Evening, twilight, was a good if short time to try and get a bite to eat. Stretching out, Madi yawned before looking to where a lake had been not that long ago. With the recent heat the water had begun to dry up, and now only a fraction of the lake remained, the water that fed it but a trickle if anything at all.

Shaking out his fur Madi made his way out of the shade and into the open sun and heat, wincing at the sudden shift in temperature. A quick sprint to the drying lake and his ear flicked in annoyance. Mud. Still fish should be in the deeper parts and the only way to get to them was to wade through the mud. Once at the water's edge he could make out some shadows just out of reach.

This was going to be interesting to say the least.

The heat was hell on this male. Being mainly black had it's perks, but at the same time, in a hot, dry summer, like it was, it had more drawbacks than perks. He was over heating. He knew that much. Mamoru's tongue was out, panting hard as he rested in the shade of a nearby bush. It wasn't big enough for him, but it was something. Being in direct sunlight hurt the male to no end. He suffered, frequently, from headaches because of the sun. A smarter move would be to go to the watering hole he smelt, tub it smelled like it was so far away. That or it was tiny.

His brown eyes squinted as he got up from his spot and trotted across the dead grass, listening to it crackle under his paws. The cracks in the ground were scratching up the pads of his paws, and made it difficult to walk. Grunting his discomfort, the spotted male found the 'lake' that he'd smelled. Well... It was basically gone. On the other side he saw another male, his head tilted to the side and his ears flicked. Did he say hello?

Well, not right now. He slid down the banks, through the mud and sighed. The mud felt good on his way too hot pads for him to complain about. While it was warm, it was a hell of a lot cooler than the cracked earth. Without even worrying about it, he moved in deeper to the lake, finally getting to the water and lapped up at the liquid, soothing his parched throat. "Gods above, there needs to be rain soon," Mamoru muttered, his voice deep but not quite rumbling.

Blue coat or black, anything of darker shade was a pain. even with the mud around his legs, it did little to cool him off. The crack of grass had his ears swivel to the source. A low growl under his breath and he backed away slightly. Being caught in the mud would hardly help should a fight arise. Plus he was hungry, and that alone set him on edge.

Tail flicking some mud from his fur, Made sized up the other male. He didn't have any females around him, and he didn't smell like he had a harem. As the other lion didn't seem to be looking for a fight, Madi relaxed, stepping forward into the semi-cool mud once more.

"Rain or just shade. With any luck the rain season will come soon enough, and this infernal heat will end." Shaking off he waded further in yet again, taking a swipe at one of the slim shadows in the water.
"Or at least drive these damn fish into my paws."

Of course Mamoru had seen how on edge the other male seemed to be, which is why he didn't really react. Why bother being on edge as well when he knew it would lead to a useless fight? His head sank further into the water, submerging his nose to get bigger gulps of water, not able to help it. Right now he really wanted to just flop down and roll around in the liquid until he wasn't panting so bad. Alas, he was going to be chatting with another male, it seemed like.

He watched the male attempt to fish before he waded into the water until it was up around his knees. "Try to catch the fish with your mouth." He spoke in a low tone, even lower than before as he stayed completely still. After a few minutes, he felt a fish brush against his leg. He waited until he could make it out just in front of him and then threw his head down, striking quickly and came up with a fish flopping about between his jaw.

Smirking, he looked over to the male and moved to his side of the lake before dropping it down. "I'm Mamoru. You can have this fish, if you want it. I wanted an excuse to put my head in the water."

This male, this Mamoru, was easing Madi's worry with each minute. The lack of a fight was a good thing, as was the lack of some crazy pride come to stalk or try to draw him in. He liked being a rogue. Freedom had it's own downfalls to be sure, but to him it certainly beat living in a pride with possibly foolish laws.

Freedom was simply a path of ease and comfort.

"Madi'molĂ´i, though Madi is much easier I'm told." Walking closer he sighed, tail swaying slightly before flicking to rid himself of flies. "Mouth? I must admit, I thought to try it but figured it would be harder." Wading into the water, the mud sank part of his paws, rendering his movement slow and sluggish. Waiting for the fish to come around he felt them pick at his fur, no doubt a few bugs crawling on him served as a nice least meal. "But no thank you. If I don't get my own then how will I learn?" Swinging his head down, he snapped his jaw shut, but coming up, the fish slapped him with it's body, jaws letting go in shock. He'd only caught the tail and hadn't been ready for the fishy attack.

When Madi introduced himself, the male had to blink. Indeed, that was a mouthful to say! So, Madi he would be. It was an easier name to remember. "Well, Madi. I'll eat this fish, then.." The laid-back male laid down and put the fish between his paws, starting to bite into it, sighing when it finally stopped flopping around. His eyes closed as he savored the meal and mentally groaned. It'd been a long time since he'd had fish. Lately, Mamoru had taken to eating the small ones of a zebra herd that sometimes came near by this watering hole.

He startled when he head a splash of the other's head and then grinned at the sight of the fish. "Be careful about the-" and he was cut off because it had already happened. "...I should have told you sooner! They will hit you in the face to try to get you to let go!" Well, now he felt like he was being Captain Obvious. Sighing, he shrugged and took another bite out of the fish. "Try again. Now you know about the fin slap, so just don't let go."

The lion huffed as the mud seeped further into the paws. Claws would be filthy, but hey, at least he'd be cool. One nice thing he guessed. Even if the mud would cake on his fur and make him filthy. "Enjoy your fish, I will endeavor to get my own." Puffing up his mane, (as damp as it was), he dove his head down into the water premature coming up with nothing.

Grumbling, his tail splashed into the water. "Fishing is harder than catching a gazelle. At least I know how those move. Fish-" he sighed, waiting for more to swim back. "At the very least they lack the intelligence to flee. One nice thing." A nibbling fish swam between his legs and he watched it. Face slammed into the wet, coming up with a fish in his jaws. It kept slapping him the eye as he made his way to the drying bank. Setting the dying fish down he sighed. "This dry season needs to end. Change is good, but not this much change."
