It wasn't often that Arilee Selvig's cheerfully confidant face fell off. But then, it wasn't that often either that her dearest father dared to try and argue with her. Most of the time, he remained carefully in the background and didn't try to talk to her. He knew how she felt about her step mother. He knew. And every damn time, he would persist in calling the cow her mother. And now he was trying to fight her into acceptance. Ugh!

Her sandaled foot lashed out viciously, kicking a pebble and sending it shooting across the street. She wanted a fight. She needed a fight and there was no one around to start anything with. Glancing around, she saw that not only was there no one to accost, she'd also managed to roll her way into one of the less savory areas of Destiny City.

"Right on," she muttered to herself, a wild grin flashing across her face. Slamming her heel down onto her skateboard to make it pop off the ground and into her waiting hands, she stood and held it out like a club.

"Where the hell does a girl have to go to find a therapeutic brawl around this shithole?" she called out mockingly. To anyone watching, they might have thought she seemed far too relaxed, too loose. What they might not see would be the tensed muscles through her shoulders.

What was life without a bit of excitement, after all?

Princess Ares very rarely left her throne room in mirrorspace. There was so much to be done, and as the only one with the ability to wield the Dark Brimstone Crystal, the leader had certain responsibilities each day that could not be avoided. When she set foot outside of the twisting fog of mirrorspace, it was for a damn good reason.

Tonight, she was hunting for recruits.

The Dark Mirror Court had been at a bit of a standstill. They brought in energy, charged the crystal, created wraiths -- but what was it all for? Ares had her own plans, but she felt like they were not making the headway that she had always dreamed of making. Mostly, she blamed herself. She was shackled to that damn throne room. It had made her out of touch.

Gliding through a mirror into a dark alley, Ares arrived just in time to see a strange girl with blond hair wielding a skateboard. Her outburst had one effect -- those who had been nearby shuffled away from her. "Fighting isn't therapy," she called from the shadows. "It is more than that." There were too many people for her to approach, but she could at the very least try to tempt the girl to step out of sight.

As much as she'd been hoping for a response of some sort, Arilee hadn't expected one so quickly. And the voice hadn't sounded particularly aggressive. Maybe we can change that, the tall, mohawked girl thought. Moving carefully in the direction of the voice, she held her board at the ready.

"Well, stranger," she called back, "maybe it's not therapy for you, but me, I tend to feel better after a good fight. The hell are you sticking to the shadows for anyway?"

Seriously, what kind of person spouted zen s**t from the shadows like that? Deep down, a tiny, rusty voice whispered, Someone we do not want to ******** with. Squashing that tepid burst of common sense, Arilee continued moving forward, a smalll tight grin on her face.

The shadows in the alley were enough to keep Ares concealed. She knew her regalia wasn't exactly the most inviting in the world, not to anyone with common sense. The gang activity in Destiny City was decently well-known. Sure, there were impostors, but Ares had no desire to chase off the girl so ready for a fight. A spirit like that could be an asset.

"I don't need a spotlight to be empowered. It seems you do, carrying around that... thing like it's a weapon." Ares extended one hand into the light, gesturing to the skateboard. A thick gold band encircled her wrist, and the tip of her finger funneled into a claw. "Real power isn't loud. It doesn't have to be."

Again, she waited.

Had she just seen a claw? Arilee paused briefly, her eyes and brain arguing. The gold band they agreed on. The claw... well, that they weren't so sure of. It had to be a trick of the light and shadow. Shrugging on her momentary chill, Arilee had to laugh at the mystery voice's words. So, maybe this wasn't a fight, but she found herself enjoying the exchange.

"What," she answered in a mocking, bantering voice. "You expect me to actually get my lily white hands filthy? Seriously though. What if there's a zombie apocalypse? Skateboard makes a good tool to beat out diseased brains, no?"

Ignoring the tiny flash of cautioning common sense, the girl stepped further into the shadows, dropping the skateboard slightly, balancing it on one end as she used it as an impromptu cane.

"Wouldn't know much about power," she answered frankly. "I mean, I've heard there's power in style and all that usual crap. You gonna teach me about power then? Or lecture me for needing an outlet for my agressive tendencies?"

The zombie reference was lost on Ares. Even as a civilian, Fallon was not up to date on pop culture in any way, shape, or form. She didn't really give in to frivolity, and she considered fantasy-pursuits precisely that. That was, until she became one -- but now that was all water under the bridge. Whatever the girl said didn't truly matter anyway. Ares was a hunter. She had already targeted the prey.

"I don't need to teach you about power, or lecture you about an outlet for aggression," she said, voice low.

The click of heels tapped against the concrete in the summer heat. One leg appeared from out of the shadows first, then a sweep of black skirt, a thin waist, arm, shoulder -- and then she was standing before the girl in the alleyway, her golden staff giving off a warm red glow, emanating from the Dark Brimstone Crystal.

"I can give you power," she said calmly. "And with it, you can put your aggressive tendencies to good use -- if you are strong enough to handle it."

At the appearance of the leg, Arilee felt her eyebrows raise up, as the rest of the female appeared, she wondered if she might not permanently lose her eyebrows somewhere in her hairline. In the red glow, she could see the claw tipped fingers, the odd outfit. But none of that mattered. The woman Arilee found herself confronted with was, in a word, HOT. And Arilee had never been one to fail in appreciating beauty in any form.

She felt herself blushing in the face of this woman and her calm words. Never a stammerer (mainly because she knew how to stay quiet when flustered), she felt her fingers slide off the skateboard, heard it drop to the ground at her feet. And she forced herself to consider the offer she'd just been given. Running her fingers through her hair, she let her eyes fall on the glowing crystal in the staff the woman held.

"Well, you do come to the point, don't you," she murmured as she thought hard. The words 'good use' were what had kept her from laughing outright. Her father and step-mother had power thanks to money, but in Arilee's opinion, they certainly didn't use that power for anything worthwhile. And the power of money was such a fleeting thing. The power she was being offered was something more. She was being given a chance to do some actual good. She understand that much. Well.

It was only then that the challenge in the other woman's words struck her. Grinning, she kicked her board back up into her hands and tucked it up under one arm. Her free hand went to rest on her hip.

"Strong enough, huh," she replied, eyes sparkling with challenge. "Try me."

Cold gray eyes did not waver from Arilee's face, but when Ares spoke it was clear she was not talking to the civilian in front of her. "This is her -- unawakened?" Her head tilted to the side, as if to listen for a voice. A soft call came from the shadows, too quiet for Arilee to hear. Whatever was said, it brought a smile to Ares' face.

"I love a good dance, but I have no desire to damage you. I'll save that challenge for our enemies," she said, taking one long stride toward the girl with the skateboard.

The crystal in the golden cage at the top of her staff began to glow, softly at first -- then it flashed, tossing a glowing, reflective pane into the space beside Arilee and Ares. In a quick beat, the Princess of the Parallels was mere inches from Arilee. Her hand gripped the girl's shirt, lifted her off her feet. "If you aren't strong enough, it won't matter. The Dark Mirror Court will help you get there. Welcome to the ranks." With that, something flashed through the air, tossed from the same shadows where Ares had just directed her voice. It was a pen, cartwheeling through the air and landing squarely in Arilee's palm.

"Deep breath," Ares said -- and then she threw Arilee through the mirror of energy, shattering it into pieces that absorbed into the girl's flesh.

Arilee's eyes flickered side to side quickly, trying to figure out what or who this woman was talking to. And what she might mean by unawakened.

Then, there was no time to wonder. The strange woman moved fast. Arilee heard herself squeak in surprise as a weird glowy thing appeared beside her. Then, feeling herself lifted by her shirt, she kicked out reflexively her hands moving to try and break the other's grip on her.

The spinning pen the flew through the air to slap so neatly into her hand distracted her briefly and her mouth opened, whether to ask a question or scream, she wasn't sure. Then, she heard "Deep breath" and felt herself being thrown.

She felt the mirror shatter, felt it get absorbed into her. But whether or not it was painful she couldn't decide. She felt heat, felt something happen. And then, she didn't feel anything at all, except for the weight of the pen in her hand.

Ares had seen this dance countless times before. She made no move, except to let her tense hand relax back to her side. After a few moments, the girl with the skateboard was now a new person altogether:

The Princess of the Parallels craned her neck back to the shadows. "Who is she?" she asked.

Still in the darkness, the guardian cat replied, "Sailor Chariklo, Senshi of Seagulls. I'll go around the block and see if I can sense any others." Without ever revealing itself, the cat was gone. Ares was grateful to the help of the cats, but she longed for the day when she might have one that was utterly sworn to the Dark Mirror. Unfortunately, it did not seem like it was within her power. Ares' magic seemed to be specifically attuned to the senshi, nothing more. Perhaps it warranted testing? It would take a lot of power. A thought for another day.

She gave the girl a few moments and then said, "You are Sailor Chariklo, Dark Mirror Senshi of Seagulls. Under that human skin of yours, you are more than you might have ever thought possible. You are a creature reborn -- a creature from space with powers beyond any human's. I am Ares. I rule our court. There is much to discuss, much for you to learn, but standing here in an alley is not the place for it. I can take you to mirrorspace and summon another of our ranks to explain it all to you. All you need to know now is that you are part of something, your life has changed, and that the power you crave is now back in your hands. Why don't we see what we can do with it?" Ares glanced over her shoulder. She didn't like having a freshly born senshi standing so openly. There were things the girl needed to learn so that she didn't run off and get herself killed.

That would do nothing for their cause.

Aril... no, Chariklo stood staring at herself, listening intently to every word Ares said. She didn't entirely understand how she was a reborn space person, but she believed. After seeing the energy mirror and feeling it absorb into her skin, she believed. It was impossible not to.

Giving herself a tiny shake, she snapped herself to attention. Eyes shining now with wonder and a burningly intense loyalty, she placed one hand over her heart and bowed to Ares. Ares had found her, woken her up and had given her a purpose. And for that, Chariklo would follow her leader to the very ends of the earth if need be.

"Yes... of course. Sure. Holy s**t," she replied, her voice still on the dazed and confused side of things. "Whatever you say, ma'am."

For a moment, she didn't care where she was to learn about what she now was. But it seemed important to Ares that it not be in an alley, so she would happily go with whatever the other suggested.

Princess Ares had other matters to attend to that night, but she would not leave a freshly-awoken DMC senshi alone. "Here, let me show you our world," she said, grabbing the girl by the wrist. In two steps, they had disappeared through the mirror that had brought Ares to this very place, sliding through the mist and fog of mirrorspace. The leader had done her part to bring Sailor Chariklo to their fold. Now it would be up to the rest of the faction to train her and show her the ropes. The young girl's journey had just begun.
