The winter had been a long one. Luckily, or perhaps at times unluckily for Dendro, he had Prism around to help clear ice out of the pond, gather food and keep the small clearing they called home clear of snow and other pesky things. It had been hard but the pair had managed to survive the coldest winter Dendro could remember. These new lands were not entirely what the herd had envisioned when they came here, if all the winters were like they one they had been through only a few months ago then they were in big trouble. Especially himself, for Dendro had left the herd and lived on his own. Well mostly his own, Prism helped when he felt like it.
Now that good weather was upon them once more Dendro had temporarily left his home, leaving Prism behind to guard it as best he could. He needed a change of scenery, a refresher on what it was like to live on his own, relying on his senses - or at least what was left of them, and to just get out there. He had traveled for days before finding himself at the sea. Seeing water for as far as the eye could see was a thrilling thing, even for Dendro. While he loved his small pond in a hidden away clearing the large sea did call to him. With this much space he could swim and swim some more and never see another soul. Where as in his clearing there were constant intruders, both Soquili and other manner of creatures. Trotting over to the waters edge Dendro let his legs soak as he followed the beach, cool sea water splashing at his legs and belly as he went. He made sure to keep his good ear facing the beach. Sure there were dangers in the water, but more came from the land so it was best to keep his attention in that direction for the time being.

Ikaroa woke from his mid day nap at his usual time, just as the tides came in. He yawned widely, stretching out his fins and legs. He was awake so that meant it was also time to eat. Ikaroa didn't tend to keep stores of food in his cave, opting instead to exercise a little and go gather enough for his meal at the time he was hungry. It wasn't like he was so old that he couldn't do that, right? He trotted sleepily to the mouth of his save, the light stinging his eyes a little. Another wide yawn as he stepped out, into the sunlight of early afternoon. From his vantage point, a few feet off the ground a top the craggy rocks of the shore line, he could see a brightly colored stallion. Food forgotten, he desired to know who had found him and what they wanted. "You there," he called, not moving form his high ground. "What brings you so far from the pastures?"

Great. So much for a quiet day on the beach. With a great sigh Dendro turned away from the water and walked towards the stallion atop the rocks. It didn't take him long to see who it was, someone from the herd, not just someone but his old herds leader. There was some sort of irony in the fact that their leader had left them after coming to these new lands, and not long after Dendro himself had left the herd as well, he was useless to them so had struck out on his own and hadn't looked back since. He had picked up a companion along the way, but Dendro was certain Prism wouldn't stick around for much longer. Sure it had been handy to have the stallion around in the winter, and now when he had left his home to go on this short journey but he had left the herd to have his freedom and independence and how could he have that when another was living with him.
Now on his first outing since leading the herd and finding the perfect place to call him own he had not only run into an old herd member but the leader itself. Things just kept getting worse and worse. "Pastures don't do me much good." He told the other stallion coming to a stop a few feet away. "My calling is the water, like yours." Dendro made sure to keep his body angled so that his good ear faced the other.

If Ikaroa noticed the recognition in Denro's eyes, he gave no indication. And while he didn't truly recognize him, who could be asked to know all the faces of those they lead, there was a faint light of realization. The disgraced scout, if he was not mistaken. Ikaroa never did learn the name. He'd only heard whispers; it was in the days when he still stuck close to the herd in case of disaster. Honestly, Ikaroa had taken it for rumor only. A blue stallion who had always been a very apt scout for the herd. While Ikaroa himself did not agree with the ruling, he had no place to protest it now. Instead of revealing any of this, however, he raised an eyebrow at the mention of his "calling."
"You presume much, to know my calling. It is not the sea, but solitude. Which you are interrupting." Even through the accusation, there was no irritation in Ikaroa's voice. "Although, I must say this is the fist time a visitor has caught my interest. I've never seen another member of the herd out this far." Or at all, really. "So the rumors are true, a scout truly was removed from service. If perfectly functioning members of protection are being tossed away, however, I might have to reclaim my place." A joke, evident by the smirk across Ikaroa's lips.

Dendro was not one to understand nor appreciate jokes, so the words coming from his old leaders mouth were met with a scowl on the Nixie's face. "I damn well didn't come here to interrupt you. In fact, I would have left you alone had you not called out to me, so if anyone is to blame for interrupting your precious solitude it was you." Had this encounter occurred in the past then Dendro would have certainly apologized for interrupting and went on his way. But this was not the past and he was no longer the stallion from those days. Back when he showed respect to others, loved his herd and would do anything to keep them safe. Now everyone was just a thorn in his side, his old leader included.
Ignoring the fact that he was already angry, and didn't feel like explaining things Dendro went on to do exactly that. "Well that's because most of the herd has stayed put. You know, the place we ended up before you wanted off to you silly solitude." Of course the worse part came at the end. And the joke was not well received at all. No if there was one thing his old leader should know it was why he was no longer a scout. Did Ikaroa care so little for his old charges that he had forgotten? Or did he ever know? "Perfectly functioning?!" Dendro shouting, losing his last shred of calm. "I am far from perfect. I lost the hearing in my one ear protecting your herd from a two-legger raid before we left our old lands. I was forced out of scouting because of this, unable to do the duty I lived for. I was cast out because I am not perfect. Who wants a scout that can't properly hear?!" He was practically shaking with anger. "So go ahead, reclaim your silly spot as leader, see who will accept you back after you abandoned them for no reason. I for one will not come crawling back to your side. You don't deserve to lead them."
