It wasn't fair. Why did Aunt Mercy have to leave? Why couldn't she have stayed just a bit longer? And why hadn't she come back to visit yet. Never mind the fact that it had only been three days since the alicorn mare had left her home for the first time on her own, Lapin was missing her Aunt greatly. The others seemed to have moved on, returning to life as normal, and try as she might Lapin just couldn't stand it. She missed Mercy more than she had ever imagined she would. Who could play with her night and day now? Who would let her ride on her back to make it feel like she was flying? Who would keep Syrrin at bay? Aunt Mercy used to do those things and now Lapin was lost without her.
Letting out a sigh the small foal walked through the trees, dragging her hooves along not caring where she went. Normally she would be running around having a great time but with Aunt Mercy gone fun was hard to find. Kicking a small stone as she went seemed to be the only source of entertainment and fun she could have at the moment. Poe had tried to cheer her up but Lapin just couldn't help but feel sad.
Now that she was farther away from the others Lapin dropped to the ground in a pile of sadness. She desperately wanted to see Mercy again but there was little she could do. Sure she could try to follow her but Mercy could fly and was likely a very far way away already. With a heavy sigh Lapin laid her head down on her front legs and closed her eyes. She would just lay here until the sadness went away. Lightfoot had traveled quite some distance and now found himself in a forested area that surrounded a nicely sized meadow. From the paths worn in the grass and among the trees he determined that a small herd of Soquili lived in this area. Surely they would let him stay here for a few days. Making his way through the trees the small rabbit came across a very small Soquili. And to make it even more interesting the tail on this Soquili looked the same as his tail. Inching his way over to the foal Lightfoot sniffed her gently, wondering if she was asleep, before dashing a few feet away - just in case she didn't like being woke up.

Feeling some light puffs of hot air Lapin's eyes immediately shot open. "Aunt Mercy?!" She asked far too excitedly before her eyes settled upon a grey rabbit a few feet away. It wasn't Aunt Mercy just a silly little rabbit. Any other day Lapin would have jumped for joy to see a creature so close to her but today she just couldn't muster up any excitement. With a heavy sigh she laid her head down again, only this time her eyes remained open watching the rabbit with little interest. If Aunt Mercy were here they would have probably chased the rabbit in a fit of laughter. If Poe was here she would likely want to quietly observe it, not wanting to scare it away. But neither of them were here, Lapin was on her own, trying her best to avoid the others since they kept asking her silly questions like if she was alright. Of course she wasn't alright, Aunt Mercy was gone! They didn't understand, perhaps Poe did a bit, but the others didn't.
The foals sudden voice made Lightfoot jump back in surprise. When his heart stopped racing he took a few tentative steps forward, his nose twitching as he sniffed the air, ears standing at alert. She had called out to her aunt, perhaps she got separated from her. Sitting down, his front legs lifted off the ground Lightfoot sniffed the air once more. He couldn't smell another around, so if the foal was lost then she must really be lost. "Are...you okay?" He asked, his own voice sounding far too loud in the quiet of the small clearing. "Are you lost?" He couldn't explain it, but he wanted to help this foal, no not just help her but be with her.

Lapin suppressed a sniffed as the rabbit asked if she was alright. She was far from alright. Lifting her head Lapin looked over at the rabbit, his nose twitching as he constantly sniffed the air. "No." She answered at first, not really indicating which question she was answering. "I miss Aunt Mercy. She...she left a few days ago...and I miss her." The end of that sentence was choked in the beginning of a sob. Lapin would give anything to have Aunt Mercy around once more.
Seeing the foal cry nearly broke Lightfoot's heart. He hopped forward until he was right beside her and gave her a nuzzle. "Shh, it will be okay." He assured her, rubbing her shoulder gently with one of his paws. "Would you like me to stay with you a while?" He hoped that she would, as he felt this strange and deep bond to her that he really couldn't explain nor deny.

It took a few moments for Lapin's crying to come to an end, but having the rabbit there at her side whispering to her softly made her feel better. Gently she pushed her nose into his shoulder to show her gratitude for what he was doing. "I....I would like you to stay." Who would have thought that she could make a friend when she was feeling so sad only moments ago. "I'm Lapin." She said pulling her head back to look at the rabbit. His fur was nearly the same color as hers and one of his front paws was white. That made her smile a little. He sure was cute.
Seeing her smile and hearing that she wanted him to stay melted his little bunny heart. "I'd be honored to stay with you Lapin. My name is Lightfoot." Funny he had never spoken with a Soquili before. Often times he avoided them, as there were several vicious breeds that would love to make a snack out of him. And other times he had no reason or desire to talk to them. Perhaps this little foal was more special than he had first thought. Honestly when he first found her he thought nothing, it was just another Soquili but now Lightfoot was thinking differently.

Her small smile grew a bit more. It had been far too long since she had smiled or been happy. This little rabbit seemed to be the key to breaking through the sadness that had filled her every moment ever since Aunt Mercy left. "You could stay here with me...forever." She told him hopefully. It would be nice to have another friend around. She had Poe, Olo when he was around, Syrrin when he wasn't being mean and the rest of the herd but she could always use more friends.
Hearing his name made her smile again. Lightfoot. It was a very appropriate name since his one paw was a lighter color than the rest of his body. "I'd...like you to stay here Lightfoot. My family herd lives here, we could share the land, you wouldn't take up much space." Heck most of the herd didn't take up much space, except for those winged foals but she was almost certain they and their parents would leave once they were older and able to fly.
He never expected this. In all his travels and all his years Lightfoot had never envisioned himself becoming attached to a Soquili. Yet here he was, in this very moment, feeling such a deep connection to this foal he knew he would never leave her. "I'll stay." He told her with a nod of his head. "Forever." This little foal would be a large part of the rest of his life, and he would be a huge part of hers. It was clear she was still sad, missing her Aunt but perhaps his presence would sooth the sadness away until she was happy once more.

No longer feeling a deep and unending sadness Lapin got to her feet. She wasn't too much bigger than the rabbit, and would still be small even when she reached adulthood so he was the perfect sized companion. Mother had a buffalo who was larger but Lapin thought a rabbit was perfect for her. Plus they had the same tails! And her longer ears were similar to his. Hey this day was starting to look up! Her short fluffy tail wiggled at the notion. "I hope you love to run Lightfoot, cause I love to run!" If he could keep up with her then everything would be alright. "Come on I'll show you around. You can meet my sister Poe, she's shy but I think she will like you." And with that the little foal trotted off towards where the rest of the herd could be found. Today was a great day, even if Aunt Mercy wasn't around to share it.
"Are you kidding? I love to run!" It was so nice to see Lapin no longer so sad like she had been when he had first come across her. And she had family around here too. He was certain they would all be nice like she was. There was no way Lapin could have any evil in her life. As the foal trotted off, Lightfoot hopped happily behind her. This was the start of a great friendship.
