11:30pm - 1:00 am: Patrol and Reconnaissance

That entry had been placed into Eilian's digital planner in late 2010, set to repeat every other day that there was not already a previously existing conflict. There was a well-worn route that Super Sailor Albali followed every single patrol that she could not and would not deviate from unless there was a more pressing crisis somewhere else that called her attention to it. Even then since what had happened at the creation of the Dark Mirror Court what was considered a 'pressing crisis' was becoming more and more fluid, more and more ambiguous.

Was it a senshi in trouble? Yes? Which one? That was crucial. If it was unlikely that the Senshi of Echoes would be able to do any good by stepping in and getting her hands dirty, so to speak, she wasn't likely to move off of her route to help. Civilians generally got her help getting the hell out of the jam they were in and she almost always went after youma when they made themselves apparent. Chaos officers of the Negaverse were rarely engaged unless she had no choice and Dark Mirror senshi almost not at all. Sailor Albali meant to be one and not only did she mean to join them, she meant to be their leader's right hand as she had been in the Blood Moon Court. Nothing less would be acceptable after everything was said and done.

As a result of her shift in thinking about being a senshi it wasn't entirely uncommon for the senshi to be distracted on her patrol. The BMC had all but disintegrated finally over the past few months and though there was nothing left to be loyal to but a senshi princess who did not seem to want her, Albali did what she had always done. She persevered and kept to her schedule.

Albali was like Ares in some ways -- one of which was their mutual dedication to schedules and habits. The path that Albali patrolled been a constant for some time. Ares did not remember it when she evolved into her Dark Mirror self, but she spent enough time silently watching the Senshi of Echoes to pick up on her habits. She watched, but she didn't interact. What was the point? This thing in her chest was a weakness. It had beat for Nehelenia, for Ouranos, and now -- for Albali. Albali was what she had left. It would be too simple to bring her into the Dark Mirror, and too dangerous. Ares was fool enough already to still have these human emotions toward the small female. She had no intention of being romantically involved with one of her troops, and if Albali was with her, Ares doubted she would be able to stay away, not now.

The truth was that the Dark Mirror Princess felt like she was slipping away. She no longer prowled the battlefield hungry for blood. Instead she sat in mirrorspace, actively funneling energy into the crystal, strategizing for the faction, and secretly searching for a bridge back to the Black Moon Kingdom. If only she could find a way to reenter that existence... perhaps she could save them all. Perhaps she would find Nehelenia and Hector and Alexandros and Aphrodite all reborn on the other moon and living happily. Even thinking such a hopeful thought made Ares feel weak.

And yet, still, she took a break from the safety of mirrorspace to travel to the path of Albali, streaming out of a mirror reflecting the sky on the top of a building. The air was hot and sticky with summer heat. It had been weeks since Ares had felt it on her skin. Such was the curse of mirrorspace -- time had no meaning there, not to her.

The staff that held the Brimstone Crystal was strapped to her back, long skirts swishing with each step. She perched on the edge of the building, closed her eyes, and felt for Albali's presence. It was weak, it was stupid, but she was here.

Albali was so bored on her route that night that she half-considered taking out her phone and starting to revise her schedule for the next few days to include some time for what she inelegantly called 'snooping'. Now that the BMC had become defunct with everyone either going to ground, giving up entirely, or possibly being killed by the followers of Chaos she needed to find a new source of information. On her own nobody would willingly come talk to Albali because though she had been scorned and abandoned, none of them could tell where her loyalties were now. Were they still with Ares despite it all? Or was Albali, the loyal administrator, ready to put her skills to work for a new captain?

Kallichore had mentioned something about Jovian moon senshi, that they were open to newcomers and organized, perhaps...what was that? Something stopped the senshi in her tracks, heels faltering and ribbons going limp in the July humidity as her purposeful stride broke. Ironically for her it was like smelling smoke in the air, head tilted up to see if she could catch more of it so that Albali moved into the maze of alleyways to her left after it. Stronger and stronger it became before tapering out again frustratingly, sending her down another path and another set of dangerous dark corridors.

Only one person in the entire city had an aura like that; she'd know it from a mile away which was probably what was happening. Ares was somewhere in the city, somewhere not very far away, and she was heading after the Princess of Smoke like an idiot. A weak idiot who couldn't stay away if there was a chance to see the woman she'd foolishly fallen hard for. Even if Ares didn't want her she could plead her case again, show the Dark Mirror Queen that she'd become more powerful. Maybe now?

Stopping, realizing how utterly pathetic she sounded, Albali scrubbed fingers over her face and considered turning her back and walking away from the lure of that aura. Perspective was a thing missing, something she prided herself on, but then the aura pulled at her one more time. Oh ******** it, was her thought, as the Senshi of Echoes moved again to try and find her desired queen.

Turning a corner, senses clogged by her truest weakness, she didn't see the youma until it was on top of her. It wasn't one of the little ones that she could kick around either, oh no. This was one of the big ones that took an exhausting amount of pyrotechnics to eliminate. Pyrotechnics she did not have. "Oh <********>."

Being a princess gave Ares the added benefit of being much better at tracking auras -- but so did knowing Albali's schedule. As the Super Senshi darted around, Ares stuck to the rooftops, trailing after her at times, then turning away, then running back. Each time she came, Albali would run. At first, the Princess of Smoke thought she was running away... until she realizes that the Senshi of Echoes would always change direction too.

She is looking for me.

Each night that Ares did this, she looked for the same instinct -- would Albali attempt to find her, or move in the other direction? There was something about watching the ribbon-clad senshi run blindly toward her that comforted Ares. For one, it made her feel powerful. She felt drawn to Albali, but she was not running around in search of her. Two... it reminded Ares that there were people who had known her before and knew her now, and still cared. Despite what the White Moon said, Ares did not see herself as a monster. But in a small way, Albali's continued support of her made her believe this more deeply.

This was all it was to be: Ares leading Albali on a goose chase. Then the youma appeared. The parallel princess stopped running. She was several rooftops away, but she could hear Albali grunting at she fended off the youma. In a few pumps of her wings, Ares was on the rooftop above them. It was no tiny bundle of parts -- this was the kind of youma that ended the life of a senshi.

The youma was already on top of Albali. It had manacled claws that snapped and pinched, a gaping jaw set with spikey teeth, and trailed some sort of ooze that appeared to be disintegrating trash in the street. Ares watched as Albali flailed toward a pile of trash. The youma tore a bloody hole in her arm, but the Senshi of Echoes responded by bringing a broken piece of pipe down on its skull. The youma barely flinched.

Albali kicked her legs out, breaking free and took off at a run. "Don't turn your back on it," Ares snapped to herself. They were from different factions, but Ares still found herself wanted to coach Albali in battle.

The youma let out a screech and began to pursue Albali. Ares moved to the ledge of the building. Something glinted in the youma's mouth -- something... metal? Spikes. Projectiles. Albali.

Before she could think better of it, Princess Ares launched herself off of the building just as the youma released 3 razor sharp shards of metal like rockets from its jaws. She landed with a sharp click on the ground between the youma and Albali. The first shard was an inch away from her nose when she caught it. The other two were batted to the side by her staff, clattering on the hot pavement. The third shard was quickly dropped too.

The youma growled and began to take a step forward. Princess Ares only stared back. She had no power over the youma, but her signature was of Chaos and her bond was with the Youma Queen. The monster hissed twice before turning on its heels and bounding out of sight.

Princess Ares remained where she stood, back to Albali. Her chin dipped down toward her chest. If she looked at the girl, she feared she would give herself away. Better to leave. Great smokey wings spread wide, poised for flight.

Don't turn her back on it? The voice immediately registered in her brain as familiar but it was otherwise too occupied to realize who it was, what the significance of the voice was to her most important relationship. There was however enough brain power left to snap out something impatient and a bit pithy because it was Albali who hated more than anything to be unreliable. "Gotta run away, it's going to eat me." Well actually it would probably burn through her skull with its acid and consume whatever liquid slurry was left behind when her flesh had all melted. That was a pleasant way to die she was sure, but it wasn't how she wanted to die.

Albali actually preferred to die not at all which she was sure made her some kind of strange duck. Obviously.

But then there was the power of that aura she had been chasing right behind her causing the Senshi of Echoes to stop fleeing, turning in time to watch the Princess of Smoke send the youma away like some kind of damned pet. Sweating from the exertion of the fight, dirty from the trash of the alley, bleeding from her wound and her uniform singed away in a few parts from the acid of that thing's saliva she felt pathetic. Weak. Ares couldn't even look at her before making the motions to fly away and leave her again, all alone in the night with nobody else who mattered.

"No, please! Don't go! I've...I've been looking for you." A hand stretched out until she saw the smallest smear of grime on the back of it, aghast and remembering clearly how Fallon felt about mess and germs. It dropped away but teal eyes were firm with their intent to grab onto the Dark Moon ruler if she needed to.

Princess Ares held her wings in midflight at the sound of Albali's voice. She didn't wince visibly when the girl reached for her, but she felt the reaction in her chest. Taking a deep breath, Ares wiped all emotion from her face and turned to face the Senshi of Echoes with cold, dead eyes. "You have no reason to look for me, unless you wish to court death," she said sharply. It held no anger, just a simple confidence that spoke of the darkness that permeated her body.

Eilian had always been the more emotionally invested of the two and had never really been all that good at hiding her feelings from Fallon. She wasn't overly demonstrative about them because that wasn't how either of them worked on any sort of level, but neither had she made any real secret about her feelings. That was just one of those things that the girl had always seen as a waste of time. So when that cold, emotionless face and voice were turned on the senshi Albali couldn't hide her flinch of pain as it struck her right where she was most vulnerable.

Perseverance was one of the chiefest virtues of Sailor Albali though so despite the painful clutchings of her heart the girl closed the distance between the two of them. "I have every reason to look for you. If you think that death is all you have to give me, that's on you Ares. But I have so many reasons to go looking for you and you know what they are." Personal and professional though there was no way to say that the professional outweighed the personal. She was so lonely these days, always looking longingly towards the mirror and coaching herself out of going over to knock on it the way she knew the queen might respond to.

Her opposite hand came up, relief sliding in beneath the pounding nervousness in her head when she saw it was at least clean white where the other was stained. It reached out for Ares' jaw to touch there lightly as Albali did something so daring she couldn't quite believe it herself, closing the distance between them so that with the warmth of July had the temperature between them soaring. "If nothing else? I miss you." This was not the kind of moment she wrote about in her secret drabblings. It was too raw, too full of the potential to hurt them both in unknowable ways to be something anyone wanted to dream about.

Eyes open, heart raw, Albali daringly tried to kiss Ares.

Princess Ares held her face like something cut from marble -- unchanging, unfeeling -- even as Albali expressed herself clearly. So long as the Senshi of Echoes was part of the White Moon, there could be no alliance. But until all the senshi were recommitted to a Dark Mirror way of life, Ares could not risk the chance at bringing in someone so close to her heart to the ranks. Though her face and body gave nothing away, there was something telltale about the fact that the leader of the new parallel kingdom had not left yet. She remained fixed to the ground, observing Albali as if watching a play of someone else's life.

But when Albali broke through the wall that divided them, Ares felt her ribs constrict. She sucked in a breath, tensing from head to toe. Her eyes were frozen in their death stare, even as Albali began to move toward her lips. Only then was Ares able to react.

A stiff crack split the air. The golden staff glinted in the moonlight, its cage splashed red with blood. The impact sent the Senshi of Echoes sprawling sideways, eyes rolling upward as the blunt force trauma took hold. Princess Ares did not move, not at first. She stared at Albali's prone form lying crumpled on the street. She wasn't moving.

In a flash, Ares was beside her, kneeling in the street and pushing hair from her face. "Albali? Albali? Albali!" Fear gripped the princess. Had she killed her? It had been a reflex, just an act of self-defense. Two fingers pressed into the soft flesh of Albali's neck. Ares held her breath for what felt like hours until the dull thump of a pulse echoed back.

The breath rushed out of her. She was alive. She was hurt, but alive. In the street across the way, a car rumbled past. People, too many of them. Ares couldn't exactly take Albali to mirrorspace, but she couldn't leave her here either. The leader of the parallels strapped her torch across her back, scooped Albali up into her arms, and took off at a sprint, disappearing in the nearest mirror. She knew exactly where she was going.

Floating in the bleak realm of unconsciousness Albali was pretty sure that she had failed in her mission to get that damned kiss. Kissing Fallon had always been fantastic, her romantic heart telling her that the seeing stars wasn't impossible, but there was a certainty that it would not have made her faint. There were a lot of things that Eilian Halpan clearly did not do; fainting was clearly on that list at the top right next to breaking her schedule and being disorganized. Coming back out of it into the morning sunshine with the worst headache that perhaps she'd ever had, fingers came up to her head and landed right on the lump, confirming her suspicions.

Ares had, for whatever damn reason that had flashed through the mirror princess' mind, clocked her. Not even with a fist which would have done the job just as admirably and perhaps not as dramatically as catching metal to the head had done. Wait it was not night, this was not an alley. Opening her eyes and sitting up fast enough to make her head spin and stomach clutch with the nausea that clearly signalled a concussion of some type the young woman glanced around. She was home, in her bed, in her pajamas.

Eilian had not left home in her pajamas. Eilian never left home in her pajamas because you never knew when you were going to want to power down and not stand out, or when you might be seen, which meant that...oh. Oh my. Instead of blushing or perhaps fainting again the music student laughed, noting as well that her arm had been bandaged and even the dirt from under her nails had been removed. Fallon had, as always, missed no detail in her pursuit of perfection and cleanliness.

What bothered her just a little bit was the fact that next to her bed was a note mentioning that there was shepherd's pie in the fridge sitting propped against a cup of tea that was still warm. Still warm meant that Ares had spent the night making sure that her former partner had not died from being clocked like a pervert and...the blanket over her legs was...from the mirror. If that wasn't a damn statement she didn't know what the hell a statement was.

Well, she'd have to send one back. Rising clumsily from the bed and trying desperately to ignore the screaming in her head from the concussion Eilian dragged the blanket over to the full-sized mirror she'd bought when everything had still been alright. Perhaps even very nearly ideal. One hand laid against the mirror, voice warm with what she would have told Fallon had she bothered to stay. "Thank you for taking care of me." For only the barest moment her cheek was laid against the cool glass before pulling it away, polishing the smear her skin's contact left behind, and throwing the blanket over it again.

Maybe they'd see each other again soon.
