It was a lazy day for Gunju and the leopard was taking an undeserved nap on the lowest branch of an acacia tree. One had to call it undeserved because the green leopard had somehow managed to steal all his meals for the past weeks and through no effort of his own, here he was, basking the warm sunlight with a full belly and not a care in the world.
He yawned quite loudly and then looked around briefly, wondering if there was anything of interest in his surroundings before he was finally forced to admit to being somewhat bored. It was usually a matter that he could easily fix by harassing a passing stranger but the sleek cat seemed to be quite alone. He sighed under his breath but did not move from his comfortable little spot. He was not that bored yet.

The weather had finally decided to be kind for the past few days, for which Baridi was very thankful. She had also stumbled across a rather fruitful area of the rouge lands, full of pack animals, water, and vegetation. She figured this would be a good area to rest for a while in, call home for the time being, and see if there were any potential friends in the area. After an hour or so of trotting happily through the savanna, she caught wind of a feline not terribly far from her. She stopped and looked around, catching the scent again coming from a tree. A leopard, then. Cheetahs and lions really weren't the type to climb trees. She turned her paws in the direction of the other feline, smiling a bit as she spotted a green male lounging in the trees. "Good afternoon," she called out happily as she approached. It was always best to have a cheerful personality. It encouraged the other to be cheerful as well. At least, that was her mentality. "It's a lovely day, isn't it?" It wasn't boiling, there was some cover from a few puffy clouds, and a herd of antelope grazed not too far away. It really was a perfect day.

Gunju turned his head to look down at the green leopardess, wondering how he’d missed her presence until the moment she spoke. His head tilted as he took in a few details about his appearance. A similar shade of green and bright-colored eyes – green instead blue like his own. He wouldn’t be surprised if they were distantly related though somehow he doubted it. Anyway, he’d asked for amusement and here she was, a quiet prayer’s answer bouncing in his direction.
“Good afternoon, miss!” He replied in a polite tone, offering the leopardess a bright smile while his inner self grinned in anticipation. Perhaps she was the bubbly and naïve type… those were always fun to mess with. “It is a lovely day!” his face sobered up a little, growing slightly worried. “Are you alone, miss? That is… not a good idea. I’m not sure I should tell you… no, I better not.”

Baridi smiled up at the other leopard as he returned the greeting. Oh good...hopefully this leopard wouldn't be like the last one. He had just been so...distant and obviously didn't appreciate her presence. This leopard even looked like her a bit, which was nice. It wasn't easy being green, even if her coat was muted and dulled, unlike the electric green she had seen on a few other felines. A worried look crossed her face as the male continued to speak. Oh no...had something happened here lately? "I am alone," she said as she moved a bit closer to the tree. "What is it? Had something happened?" She had been traveling alone for quite some time now, but had never really been in danger. She knew she could take care of herself if it came down to it, but really, if there was something wrong here, she'd rather just move on to get away from it. She was a lover, not a fighter.

The green leopard stood slowly on the branch and leaned back to sit. He still had the same worried expression from before and his frown deepened.
“You seem very nice and I’d hate to upset you.” He said softly after pretending to hesitate for a few moments. His expression lightened suddenly “Maybe if I just tell you to avoid a few places, I won’t need to tell you the terrible details…” He glanced around quickly before he turned to look at the green-eyed leopardess again. “I’ve been limping quite badly lately so I wouldn’t be of any help if trouble were to find you.” He decided to let her mind wonder what sort of trouble could be lurking in the area.

Baridi's expression mirrored the other leopard as he leaned back a bit. It was really serious, wasn't it? It had to be. She glanced around and wondered if she should join him in the tree. Perhaps it was some rouge rhino that was charging anything in sight. Of course, she was sure she'd be able to hear a charging rhino coming up behind her. Maybe it was a pack of hyenas causing mischief. She wouldn't put it past the canines to gang up on rouge felines like cowards. "Oh no, are you hurt?" she asked, trying to see if he was injured. "That's horrible...I could try to patch up any wounds you might have if you'd like. I'm a bit of a healer." Her mother had been a healer in the old pride she had been in so she had learned a bit from her. The rest she had sort of figured out on her own. "I'd be ever grateful if you did tell me where to avoid. I was thinking about staying here a few days but if it's dangerous, I should probably just move on."

She was rather cute, wasn’t she? It was almost enough to make Gunju reconsider his lies. Almost. Actually no, not really. It was just too much fun to see her react to his words.
“A healer? Really?” he faked surprise and delight as he made his way down the trunk of the tree. He dropped to the ground on three paws as if he were protecting one of his front legs. “I’m not sure if you’ll be able to help me, the damage is inside. Bones, I think.” He paused, looking at her seriously as he extended the “injured” leg to her.
“Well, then. Let’s make a deal. You see what you can do about this pain of mine and I’ll tell you all about what’s going on and the places you should avoid.” Mmm, what areas should she avoid… well, all the places that held water sources for starters. Too bad there wasn’t a desert nearby or a crocodile-infested swamp like the last time someone had asked him for directions.

"Well...I'm not as good as some, I'm sure. But looking can't hurt," she said with a little nod as the other leopard jumped down from the tree. Ah...it was his front leg, then. And there didn't appear to be any surface wounds...yes, he confirmed that it was internal. Oh dear...those were always harder to deal with. "That sounds fine," Baridi agreed as she moved around to the injured leg. "What exactly happened? Were you hit, or did you fall...knowing about the injury will help," she said as she sat down and motioned for him to do the same. "My name is Baridi, by the way." Sharing that little tidbit always helped, she found. Names were important to her, whereas she had met some other creatures who found them silly. "And we're not in any danger now, are we? I could take a look up in the tree if we'd be safer there."

This was going perfectly. He was close enough to touch her now. He refrained from doing so, knowing she’d probably react warily to it but since she was inspecting his leg, she’d probably end up touching him, a complete stranger just because he’d told her he was injured. Mighty low defenses, she had.
“I was kicked by a zebra a couple of days ago. Hunting, you see. Haven’t been able to do it since then obviously.” He lied with ease. If he played his part right, he might even get another free meal today. He sat down and smiled gently. “Baridi, such a lovely name. I’m Gunju. It’s nice to meet you.”
He paused for a moment as if he was considering her question though in truth he’d already chosen a lie for her so there was really no hesitation on his mind only his mouth.
“Well, we’re far enough… and I’m in no danger but I can’t say the same for you... You see, there’s a group of big lions that has been plaguing the area and they seem to only be interested in… well, girls.” He told his story as if it caused him pain. “They do horrible things to them and torture them for days. I’ve been unlucky enough to see one of the girls they left behind. A poor little cheetah, probably an adolescent still. Her body was badly injured and later she found out she was expecting. Her family wanted nothing to do with her and… well, let’s just say her story didn’t end well but it did end.” He sighed, frowning again.
“I’m very serious, Baridi.” He said with a sudden urgency, brushing one of her paws lightly with his own. “If you see a group of lions, you run. Okay? Don’t let them get too close. Trust me, trees won’t save you. Promise me.” It was so hard to keep the façade down. There was a hidden grin threatening to come out.

Baridi hissed quietly in sympathy. A kick from any hoofed animal could be serious. He was lucky he got hit in the shoulder and not somewhere else more vital, like his head or his chest. A broken leg can certainly be the end of a life out here, though, especially if one was on their own, as this male seemed to be. "And you as well, Gunju. I'll see what I can do for your leg." There didn't seem to be any swelling in any case, so that was a very good sign. As she leaned forward a bit to visibly inspect the area first, she listened intently to his story. As he reached the point with the young cheetah she pulled back, a look of horror on her face. "Gods...the brutes. I can't believe they'd do that to the poor thing!" Lions were so much bigger and stronger than even a full grown cheetah. The cowards...ganging up on someone so much smaller than them. The concerned touch and request made her nod, a sincere look in her eyes. "Of course. I'll spread the word as I go, as well. That's so horrible. Thank you very much for the warning." She'd certainly be keeping an eye on the horizon for any all-male groups of lions. That was one thing she didn't need to come across in her travels. "Now...your leg. Where exactly is it injured? I don't see any cuts or swelling. Is it closer to your shoulder or your paw?"

Oh, the thought of her spreading his lies around was beyond all his expectations. He could already picture himself, lying in this exact same spot just a few days from now, hearing his story as if for the first time from the mouth of a passing stranger with good intentions. Ah, nothing brought forth empathy like the thought of a poor abused slender girl, it seemed.
“It’s no trouble. I thought you should know but I just didn’t want to give you nightmares. These are not nice thoughts when one is alone at night.” Her tone had gone deeper for a second but he wasn’t playing seductive today so he quickly corrected it. “It’s closer to the paw but the pain shoots up when I put too much weight on it. It’s better than yesterday so I wasn’t too worried. Do you think it’s serious?” If he wasn’t careful, he’d start believing his own lie soon. He eyed her neck for a moment, basking in how vulnerable she looked to his cold eyes.

Baridi nodded slightly and lowered her ears shyly as she picked up on the slightly flirtatious tone. She had a job to do, though, and she couldn't let the kindness Gunju was showing her get to her head. "I'm sure I'll be fine. I'll make sure to find a safe place to sleep tonight," she said as she crouched down to look at his paw a big closer. "Well...there doesn't appear to be swelling, like I said. You'd definitely know if it was broken. Tell me where it starts to hurt," she said, pulling back just a bit to press her paw gently against his. She made sure to keep the touch light and, after pressing on his toes for just a moment, moved up inch by inch. "From the sound of it it might just be a bruised bone. Those are very painful, and they take a while to heal, but you won't hurt yourself further by stepping on it," she said as she continued her little experiment. "There isn't much you can do for it, unfortunately. Just rest."

He hadn’t expected her to pick up on his little slip into flirt mode but apparently she hadn’t been terribly affected by it so it wasn’t a problem. In a different situation, it would definitely not be a problem but when he was still hoping to con a meal out of the pretty girl, he didn’t really dare to hope too much.
He allowed her to manipulate his paw, moaning quietly as if he were stoically enduring a great amount of pain when actually he felt quite ticklish at her gentle touch.
“I’m sure it will be fine.” He said with a smile. “Please, don’t worry about it too much. I think I’ll be able to hunt well enough tomorrow.” Mmm, she hadn’t offered to bring him something yet. He was starting to worry that he might actually have to do some work for a change.

Baridi frowned a bit as her patient moaned. She couldn't feel anything wrong...no breaks, no minor swelling, no odd bumps...well, there were injuries that hurt that you couldn't see, of course. Bruised bones were one of them, minor sprains were another, strained muscles were a third. It could be a number of things. But, thankfully, all were not life-threatening provided he let himself rest and heal up a bit. "Oh no, I wouldn't hunt for at least a week or so," she said seriously as she set down his paw. "When was the last time you ate?" A week wouldn't be too much of a problem if he had eaten recently. If he hadn't, though, it could mean possible starvation. "You're lucky there's a watering hole nearby. It would have been horrible if you were out in the plains somewhere, away from water and shelter."

“Ah, yes. That would’ve been terrible.” Like a proper male who disliked showing weakness, Gunju gently pulled his paw out of her reach and downplay his grievous injury. There was still hope of getting a free meal out of the girl and this was probably his last chance… he just couldn’t be too obvious or she’d start suspecting him of being more than a poor injured but well-meaning stranger. So how did males react when pretty girls saw one of their weak spots?
“Don’t worry about me, love. I can take care of myself.” He gave her a wink as if he were unconcerned about his leg but shifted his weight not-very-discreetly to the other paw. “I ate… recently.” He laughed out nervously, wondering if this would be enough to get something out of the green leopardess. If it wasn’t, he’d just throw his mask away and finally show his true colors. This was getting boring already.
