It was like looking into a mirror. The minipet facing him was himself, the red-gold cat with an earring and red scarf, the sun marking on its leg, and, he knew, if he could see under the fur on its chest, he would find a thin, faint scar there, matching the one he bore. Still, though it was his mirror image, something was wrong about it, something imperfect, something flawed. For that and that alone he hated it instantly. Jordan, said a worried voice from very far away. Jordan, your mind tastes wrong. Fight it!He shut it out. It didn't matter. Power and perfection, that was what mattered, and he would have those qualities for himself, in spite of what all the rest thought. They would drag him down, stab him in the back, like smiling schoolchildren holding tainted gifts. It had been a mistake to trust anyone, just as it always had been. He'd grown soft and overindulgent, lost his drive. The shards had only reminded him of what he'd always known, brought back the memory of his true task, a task he should never have forgotten. He crouched low, opened his mouth wide to show all his fangs, and hissed at his doppelganger, wordlessly promising that he would not let it corrupt him. He sat down and curled his tail close around his haunches, staring at the distorted colors and grotesquely snarling face of the cat facing him. "We were fighting it before we fought the shadow dragon," he said. "You know as well as I that this isn't you. You're stronger than this. You have more willpower. Shake it off, dude. You can do this. I don't want to fight you." Jordan Faction: Sun Hunter Element: Fire (Once per battle you may roll 1d6. This the amount of EXTRA BURN DAMAGE you to do your opponent for TWO TURNS.) "No," he hissed. "You're lying. Lying by omission if not commission. I know you. I am you. You're a ******** liar. Dress it up in pretty words and evasions all you want. You don't fool me; you only want to take it all away from me. You can't have it. I need it." He shifted, crouched lower, tensing and coiling in on himself. "Let me have this. I need it. You're weak, too weak, too soft; you let them in, don't you see how you've exposed yourself? Don't you see how much they've hurt you already? You're wrong. You're wrong!" His claws unsheathed as he leaped, and he came down right on top of the other cat, knocking him down, clawing and biting and kicking; there was a deep satisfaction in the act, somehow, as though he had done at last something that he had wanted for longer than he knew. "Listen to yourself!" he pleaded. "Listen to Ferros! You're not making sense. Logic, remember? Reason and comprehension. You're letting the paranoia blind you. You're not being objective. We can get through this. You can beat it if you try." The attack wasn't unexpected, but it hurt more than he'd been anticipating. He curled into himself, rolling onto his back and gathering all four paws in close to his belly, claws popping out in preparation for defense. Flame! Ferros hissed. I cannot, you must do it for us!He knew how, somehow; somewhere in his core, himself, he gathered the energy of fire into a tight, pulsing ball, then released it to come searing into his claws and teeth. He had to end this, and fast. He hadn't wanted to fight, but this twisted other self had forced the issue. There was a sense of draining, of change, a sudden sort of chill, and the paws braced against his chest and legs grew suddenly warm. "What did you do?" he howled, and clawed wildly at the cat under him. "What are you doing? What are you taking away from me?" He sobbed once, a sudden, unexpected grief mixing with his fury. "I'm weak, I can't, don't take it away! Hasn't everyone else already taken enough from me? Can't you leave me alone? Can't I leave myself in peace, just once?" "I'm sorry," Jordan said, and looked up into the yellow eyes of his other self. "I have to do this. I can't let you destroy me." He dug his claws into the other cat's body, feeling them grow hotter and hotter, burning into flesh. The sickening smell of cooking meat and burning hair surrounded them both in a nauseating cloud. Jordan yowled as fire burned into him, bright searing pain with no Fear shield to block it. Ferros! Ferros, help me!I can't, the dragon said, misery in his tone. Don't fight. Please. Let it go.You, too? Jordan felt as though his heart had simply stopped, if he even had a heart like this. His own weapon, the other part of his soul, had betrayed him. He should have known. He should have known all along. He mewed like a kitten and swiped weakly at his double. Jordan Faction: Sun Hunter Element: Fire Key bonus: +2 HP: 11/20 Dmg: 4

"I'm sorry," Jordan said again, softly, ignoring the stinging pain of the scratches. "Please. Just let go. You're me. Come back to me. Listen. Please, just listen." His claws stayed buried deep into the other's flesh, still heated, still burning. Jordan Faction: Sun Hunter Element: Fire modifier: +4, two turns Key bonus: +2 HP: 7/20 Dmg: 8

He paused for a long moment, his yellow gaze meeting the blue of his other's. "Nobody ever listens," he said. "Not even me. Us. You." He leaned down to bite at his own throat. Jordan Faction: Sun Hunter Element: Fire Key bonus: +2 HP: 3/20 Dmg: 3

"I know," Jordan sighed. "Even when they listen. Even when they know me." He hunched his shoulders to make the loose skin at his neck bunch, protect the delicate veins in his throat. "You're not listening, either. Even you. Even me." He reached up to set his paw under the other's chin, pushed it up to bare the vulnerable throat, and bit, as gently as he could. He let himself push his chin up, didn't resist as his teeth broke the skin. He only closed his eyes and let it happen. He was tired, so tired; he'd been fighting for his lonely, thankless task so long. Maybe he'd wanted to trust. Maybe he'd deserved to be betrayed. Jordan HP: 0/20 He was neither and both, whole again, understanding and confused and aching for something that had never been his. The shards had borne a price, a terrible price, and their seductive song had been a warning in itself: go not blindly, accept the consequences and the burden and the power.Somewhere in Jordan's mind, Ferros breathed and coiled and made a sound that might have been a whimper as he comprehended all at once the choice that he had made, once upon a time. They watched together as a scene played out: a man with a sword, a man with a staff, a clash of light and dark, perfectly balanced, canceling one another out, protection and destruction, destruction and protection. Two sides of a scale. Two sides of a coin. Forever, Ferros whispered, silent, yearning. Forever, Jordan agreed.
