The year is 1729, Scotland, and times are rough to say the least. A new plague has been unleashed, and with the public growing more afraid each day, scapegoats are demanded, and witches are easy targets. While the hunt has pretty much stilled, men and women who perform witchcraft aren't very welcome by the public, and often become homeless wanders as they're shunned by almost everyone. Trying to keep a low profile, witches and wizards do their best to survive, their powers suppressed and hidden to avoid the few groups that are still searching them out.

Name: Esme Age: Unknown, appears to be 15 to 17 years old. Gender: Female. DoB: Unknown. Race: Witch. Ethnicity: Unknown, most likely Scottish or Irish. Birthplace: Unknown. Current home: None, vagabond. Place in time: 1729 Family members: Ann - Biological mother, and active prostitute. Kicked Esme out of the house when she began showing signs of being abnormal.
Other friends/pets: John Jack - An undead rat Esme brought back from the other world as an experiment with necromancy. Oddly enough, it became strangely attached to her. Half decayed and smelling like death on a bad day, John Jack is no feast for the eyes. In addidtion he also eats rotten flesh, which makes him stink even worse. John Jack appears to have above average intelligence, being able to understand human speech perfectly fine, solving puzzles and reading to some degree. The little fur he has is black. The name came to be as Esme couldn't make up her mind to call him John or Jack, so she ended up with both after a few confusing weeks of mixing the two up.
Rowland Smith - An English priest Esme sometimes visits when she's in deep trouble or needs to steal something to sell onward for quick cash. He's a very kind man, but also well aware of Esme's less legal activities and use of witchcraft, thought she thinks he remains ignorant. He has several times tried to offer her food (so that he doesn't have to keep replacing everything he owns) and shelter, but Esme has shown no interest in it.
Bio: Born in an ally-way, Esme didn't have a good start in life. Her mother made it quite clear from the beginning that she was an accident and that she shouldn't expect much of her life. Occasionally Ann told her daughter that she loved her, the few times the prostitute had a good day and a little too much to drink, but Esme hardly payed attention to it. Hell, Esme didn't pay much attention to anything her first ten years. Esme grew up with no friends, being introverted nature, and was quite happy to be left alone in mud puddle and training rats behind her mother's back. Sometimes she would even be brave enough to sneak into the stables and pet the horses. Esme began discovering she was a bit out of the ordinary around the age of 5 when she sent a cup flying across the table while throwing a hissy fit at a man who stomped on her toe and refused to apologize. After some trial and error, Esme could light candles and levitate items some months later, and has since passed over to necromancy, item animating, and animal control over time. Ann caught her lighting a candle one day, and sure enough threw her out the same day with little to nothing with her around the age of 11. Esme has since been wandering around, looking for someplace to call home.
Hair: Dark orange, uneven length ranging from shoulder length to waist. Not layered, just randomly cut. Never been combed properly, dirty and always in a mess. Eyes: Dark green, almost black. Body: Lankly, long limbs, long fingers and large feet. Very thin, little fat. Under developed and childish. Pale skin, cheeks, feet and arms often sunburned. Full of freckles. Clothing: Dirty, gray shirt that used to be cream. Dark brown sleeveless dress, light brown apron and a way too big man's belt with a pouch attached (contains pretty marbles and other useful things). Notable features: Bright red lips, large, droopy eyes, and highly placed eyebrows. Real life play-by: Visual references:
Personality and general about: Esme is anything but sweet and polite. She's rough around the edges, speaks her mind without thinking about the results and is more than willing to use her fists if her words fall for deaf ears. Esme never had much physical contact with people, and becomes awfully jumpy if people touch her. She's very much careless with how she treats herself, and therefor is often full of bruises and cuts that are all her own fault. Calling her clumsy is far from the truth though, as she probably has better body control than the average athlete. Having lived on stealing and scavenging, Esme has grown very accustomed to running, climbing and other acrobatics. Despite being a theif, Esme is a very honest gal, you just need to ask. Doesn't mean she'll return it though. That's something different. While Esme has had a lot of bad experiences with humans and is majorly apathetic towards them, she has developed a tight bond with all kinds of critters as a form of replacement. It's strange how well she gets along with them and understands their body language...
Esme does have her good sides though. Towards those who treat her kindly, she's quick to help. She'll improve crops, heal the sick or perhaps bring grandma back to see a long awaited wedding. If you really get on her good side, she might even give you a good scare (which is the highest form of compliment and affection you can get from her). If you step on her or treat her like trash, expect the dead to come for you. Literally; Esme enjoys sending the undead after people she wants to get even with.
Esme isn't very open about her witchcraft, and if she does perform it it's usually to punish people for their evil deeds towards her. She does make sure they don't get too hurt, and she certainly doesn't do anything in order to kill them. She has that much respect. Esme believes witches who spread plagues are the lowest of the low, as they affect everyone, not just the one who deserves it. This is also why Esme rarely casts curses, but she's not above setting your house on fire with you still in it once her blood gets boiling.
Compared to other witches, Esme has less control despite having much more experience. Her magic is less refined, and sometimes the results will vary once she has cast a spell, for better or worse... usually worse. For the victim, not her. Esme doesn't know how to treat illnesses or heal bones, as she can only deal with that's visual. So far she's not been able to levitate herself, or use items to fly or cast spells (such as wands), and all she does is with her own hand and mind (which is far more complicated to cast and control). Putting her next to a witchling student would make her abilities appear quite primitive in comparison, but perhaps even more effective and destructive. Esme doesn't follow any rules, besides what she has set herself, and often performs "forbidden"spells such as bringing the dead back to life, or causing misfortune.
Habits: Snorting and swearing when bothered, picking at her nails when bored. Likes: Being left alone. Adores: Playing with animals such as rats, foxes and horses, getting her hands on pastries. Dislikes: Wearing socks or shoes. Hates: Being accused of doing something she didn't do, people who don't know how to apologize, people who ask her too many questions. Fears: Witch hunters. Talents: Witchcraft, climbing walls. Facinated by: Animals. Not able to: read or write, walk on slippery surfaces. Got no clue about: History or math. Couldn't care less about: Formalities, or having to dig through trash to find food.
