Shame and guilt were powerful motivators. For those with empathy and a conscience, they were powerful emotions that could make things difficult. It had been a while since his promotion, and he hadn't touched the bonus. He'd only worn the coat on the mission, and had tried to keep to himself. As out of sight and mind while he wrestled with Dis, who had given him a single cold answer as to why he was being ignore.

'You let him mark you.'

It didn't help that he had only later found what Dis had been referring to. The mark on his a** was met with anger, confusion, disgust, and fear. He didn't know what it was, but a quick enough trip to the library made him worried. A demon's mark, he'd entered into a contract and getting out of it was not something he could possibly do. Dis had called him 'his'. Dis had always been a bit possessive when it came to Marcus admiring other weapons, wanting his own compliments, his own praise and now that he realized it, Dis had wanted affirmation. The weapon hadn't cared when it came to handling another weapon, only when Marcus had liked the other weapons.

Dis had been betrayed, all because Marcus hadn't any idea what he'd been doing, no idea that he'd made a deal with a demon. That ate at him. The weapon was letting himself be used but it was harder, the comfort replaced with biting anger, and his dreams were no longer buffered by the vampire's influence.

Dis had no kind words to offer Marcus, no help or advice for the fact he was staring at his phone The name of his division lead high lighted. Bite the bullet. Robert and Jordan didn't deserve to have his failure bite them both in the a**, and the actors death was on his shoulders. He'd led the mission, and without anyone knowing, it had ended on a failure.

Mechanic, he typed out the message.

Quote:
Miss Carr, I need to speak with you in regards to my recent mission and promotion. Please get back to me as soon as you can. I am currently by townhouse 151 and will be there until 1900.

The house was still unfinished, walls unpainted, sockets needing covers, and tiles needing to be set into the floor. From the outside, it looked nearly done, the exception being the small yard and what looked to be an elevated garden. A work in progress. From the lack of dust or dirt on him, he hadn't worked on it at all that day. The message had been sent, and all that was left was to wait, the small makeshift stool from a plastic crate the only thing keeping him from sitting his a** in the dirt.

On my way.

About twenty minutes later, Edith strolled up eating something that looked a bit like bananas covered in cheese-whiz and paprika. Probably because that's what it was. Finishing off a bite, she waved to the hunter, "So what's up? They mix up the divisions on your coat? Simon can be a sneaky little b*****d when it comes to trying to stack Allan's deck with division talent."

Why did she just have to be likeable? This would have been much easier had he disliked her, hated her like death or hell, was more afraid of her like he was with the doctor. But no, like Julie, he just couldn't bring himself to dislike her at all. Julie may have aggravated him, exhausted him, but he'd never been able to truly dislike her.

The banana didn't get so much as second glance as Marcus stood up shaking his head. "No. I got the right coat. It's... it's nice." Said coat that was sitting on the ground, folded up, showing no signs of wear. "But I mislead you that day. The mission was -is- a failure Miss Carr." There was little beating around the bush, and Dis's cold rage was giving Marcus the emptiness her needed to 'power through' it. "Robert Patterson never made it back. He was killed en route."

Shame and guilt, he was unable to look up from the ground. He didn't want to see her reaction. All her could anticipate was more shame.

"Pattinson," she corrected absently as she took another bite. Her chewing slowed as she processed what he just said. Finally she swallowed, "And yet he seemed pretty darn alive when you arrived." Her voice had lost a lot of it's earlier warmth, becoming pensive, "Explain."

Pattinson. Patterson. Close enough. He was dead. "No, he was... very much dead. It started out fine, I mean, we had some trouble with the fans, but it wasn't that bad. But once we got in the limo, the driver-" He sighed. "I didn't think to check. The driver was some vampire. I tried to talk to it and it just ignore us. We were on the road by the time we found out, and the speed was.. insane. Thought taking the drive shaft would stop it but- we flipped. Landed on some.. freak highway. And he just... died. Robert tired to revive him but..."

He was shaking his head, still unable to look up. "The vampire, it wanted to make him one of them. It didn't know we were hunters. So we tried to pass off a reapers. Then it called these two things and just-"
He backed into the wall. He wanted Dis back. He wanted just something, anything to tell him he wasn't the worst. That he hadn't ruined himself. "I'm sorry Edith, I'm so, so sorry."

Edith took a deep breath, and prompted him with a carefully neutral expression, "I see. And the Robert Pattinson that arrived at the event?"

He didn't want to keep going, but the 'auto pilot' had been engaged. He'd begun, and he'd see it to the end. "A demon and a monster-lizard thing showed up. Boogeymen. They sent the vampire away and-" That cold fury welled up in his head. Dis didn't want to revisit it. "They knew what we were. I- I was a ********> idiot. If I came back with a dead body, then at least they'd have a body, but it would ruin the reputation of Deus. It would make things difficult for everyone. But they made an offer. They offered an out and I was a god damn dip s**t and I took it. The demon cast some kind of doppelganger thing, took the actor's form. Then-" his hand was shaking as he brushed his hair back.

"It marked me. I gave me a ******** demon mark and I set up the worst ******** terms for it at that. Dis flipped out. He stopped talking to me. He hasn't said anything since. We came back and then you had to wrap it up. I just... I couldn't pull you aside. I didn't know what to do. I.. I'm sorry. I ******** up . I ******** up and I let someone die because of it. I lied to you. I lied to everyone." his gaze went to the folded coat and reaching down, he pulled it up, dusted it off, and offered it to her.
"I haven't touched the pay either. They don't belong to me. Nothing gained with a lie is worth having."

Edith stared at the coat he held out for a while, considering both it and the man. Finally she lifted her eyes to meet his and said simply, "Keep it. And the bonus. If it's handled, it's handled. Done is done." Her lips turned down slightly, "Don't mistake this for all square, it's not. You won't be given anymore optional missions, and you won't be given leadership of teams from this point on, especially not protection. You fail again, and I'll remove you from my division. No questions, excuses, or arguments, just out. Maybe you'll prove yourself and that'll change, maybe you won't. And the demon mark...well..."

The Moon leader's expression grew wry, "...pretty sure I know who you're talking about. Have fun with that." She tried to take another bite of her snack, but the spoon snapped in her hand. "Welp, anything else, or are we done here?" Her tone was casual, but there was was a hardness in her, from eyes to her posture. Edith was not in anyway pleased, and there was no real forgiveness despite allowing Marcus his rank.

She was letting him keep the coat, though it came with a price. A small one in the grand scheme of things. Opening his mouth to protest he stopped himself. She wasn't shoving him out yet, nor was she shoving him in a pod or just killing him for his incompetence. "Understood Miss Carr, and more then fair."

The spoon snapped, and he winced. Well that hardly was a good sign. "Nothing else in regards to the mission just.." Dis was silent as ever, huffing at the fact Marcus was being allowed as much as he was. "But is it.. possible that a weapon to reject a hunter?" He feared the answer though her guessed his fear would be unfounded. If Dis really wanted to be rid of him, he'd have done it already wouldn't he?

"Nope, but it sure as heck can make your life miserable," there was no sympathy in her voice at all. "I need to get going. If your little issue causes performance problems, we'll talk again." She was already walking away, not hurriedly, but with enough held a tension that promised violence, soon.
