Was it a personal choice? Did family help? School? Friends?

How did you come to ally yourself with conservative ideals?

My family is pretty conservative, but until recently didnt ever really talk about politics. During HS one really smart and attractive guy I liked was a big Republican, and he taught me some of the basics. Its kinda a lame reason to get into politics, but since then its become a personal passion. I had an internship at my state capitol and worked at a campaign office. I'm planning on declaring Gov't as my major.

I wasn't really interested in politics until election 2000, where many of my middle school collegues talked about Bush and his supposed " tax cuts for the rich." A little independent research quickly confirmed the opposite. As the year progrossed and we learned about the Consistution I began to discover my political beliefs were those of a conservative. My strong Catholic beleifs figured into how I view moral matters and basic common sense helped shape my basic beliefs into strong conservative ideas and concepts.

I started out Liberal despite my parents being Conservative. I went to an arts school where being Conservative was loked down a upon.

Eventually, I grew up, got a real job and realized what a big mess the Liberals were making of my province.

Ugh. The 2000 elections for me is what did it. My parents were conservative, but I was sort of a 'rebel', and went along with my friends, until 2000, when things just got exciting for me. My World Cultures tearcher was republican, and I had some really long talks with him about politics. That's what made my decision, really.

Well...

I used to be an Eisenhower or Roosevelt type democrat, definately a champion of the the working class. I was never a liberal however, and always somewhat conservative in my thinking. So I was a conservative democrat, aka a "blue dog" democrat.
As the party moved more and more to the left, I began to realize that the present day democrats are a far different bunch than they used to be. Not only do they no longer express nor reflect my values, by they have become the very antithesis of the party I thought I belonged to.
So... I changed... and I'm a lot more comfortable now. True, I must now suffer the "slings and arrows of outrageous democrats", but still... more comfortable.
It was kinda like wearing shoes that did not fit.

For me, it was a matter of personal choice with much influence from my family and friends. Both of my parents are Republicans, and my best friend and her family are Republicans. Therefore, I kind of grew up with the conservative ideas.

Both of my parents were in the army, so it was pretty obvious why I'm conservative. My father is (and as well as my mother but she is now deceased) were very, very strong supporters of Ronald Reagan.

They also disapproved of the Clinotn years with the terrorist bombings, the selling of missile technology to communist China (for campaign funds!), the Lewinsky scandal, NAFTA, and other misdeeds to turn more right winged.

I, like my family am not a "fanatic" conservative, I just believe in the whole point: the government should allow citizens to run their own lives like Jefferson originally planned on when it was formed. This whole gay marriage and stem cell research, I really don't care for and I don't really see why some right-wingers should care so much about it (I believe it's just to piss off some petty liberals). Politics should have nothing to do with a major religion.

Which Roosevelt are you referring to? The turn-of-the-century Teddy was a Republican before forming the Bull Moose (you're brillliant german bar wench! heart ) and other, FDR was a Democrat. He is also the only President in American history to have three terms.

FDR doesn't count as a Roosevelt anymore. Democrats for the most part only get initials these days. FDR, LBJ, JFK, etc.

I'm literally a neocon. I used to be a Democrat, but I switched to Republican after viewing first-hand the faultiness of the left.

It comes down to 9/11, then blogs, and finally the successes in Afghanistan and Iraq ... Afghanistan gave us warrior-scholar heroes -- the special forces -- for a new century ... xd
