Not again. No.

The disproportionate limbs and Insanity-touched elements were missing, but it was the selfsame sawtooth grin that chilled Mort. It didn't matter that they were the same size, shape, and species - the icy blue mirror image that smirked at him now might as well have been five feet taller.

But Mort was not the same zomboil who had fought for the sake of fighting, who sat fearing for his own health and sanity. Not today. Today, he didn't give the creature so much as a snarl before he launched himself at it, beak mercilessly piercing its deadened flesh.

And indeed the antiMort was opening its beak to make some sort of snide remark before it was assaulted. There was a thrashing and rush of feathers as the two kicked and pecked at each other, the blue version coming off worse for the wear when they at last forced each other away. "That isn't any way to treat your shadow," it hissed with pain, though its eyes were wide and the stitches of its mouth were tilted up with apparent glee at their reunion. "But I see you've gotten less inadequate. You still can't even accept the fragments' power, though."

It pawed at the ground, a challenge for Mort to come at it, bro. "And in that fact alone, in that knowledge that when power presents itself you can't even raise a hand to grasp it, you are still weak."

The same taunting, frighteningly identical voice unnerved him. And yet today, Mort had had enough bullshit with the zapping fragments, confusing old men and owls, and Jack damned puzzles to fit in one more piece into his schedule. With a guttural growl, he took wing -

"Flying away now? What happened to being different?" jeered the antiMort below, its own wings spreading to join him. But anger fueled Mort's actions, and before the creature could lift more than two of its feet off the ground, it was assaulted by an aerial dive that tore a good portion of feathers off.

"Am different," he asserted, landing not far from the fallen foe and beginning his march to finish the job. "D-Don't need stupid shards. Didn't need for beating you last time, won't need this time either."

The antiMort writhed on the ground, the miasma seeming to thicken about it in response to its rage before, with sizzling sounds, electric blue energy began to course through it, shocking it with a second wind. The creature gave a wheezing laughter that unnerved its opponent, claws flexing as it observed his advance with challenging eyes.

"The more things change, the more they stay the same," it grunted, insolence emanating from its every crevice, angle, and nook. "You tell yourself you are better than me . . . so why not be rid of me? Or is the hero unable to shake his own sins?

"If you couldn't stave off a few fragments, you can't hope to best yourself."

The miasma began to spread beyond the creature's space, and though Mort didn't need to breathe its noxious fumes filled his wounds until even he couldn't help but succumb somewhat to its effects. The room seemed to spin, and his march faltered until, several feet from his mouthy quarry, he lunged again.

He was not going to give in, not as a student, not as a minipet.

"To be hero is a constant journey," he hissed in the thing's ear (or what would have constituted for one) as claws raked its belly mercilessly. "If means have to f-fight you thousand times, will do it. Hero does not turn down The Call. Nor does hero take Temptation -"

"Spare me the inner strength bullshit."

The antiMort's fetid breath, coupled with the less than graceful landing and the confusing miasma, disoriented Mort long enough for his doppleganger to unleash a savage counter, tearing out his vocal chords with a wailing crow that frightened Mort enough to back off. Blood poured from their collective wounds like sludge.

"And listen."

And all Mort could do was open and shut his beak uselessly, a gurgling sound his response.

The creature pulled itself up sluggishly, heavily favoring one side as it eyed Mort with pitch black eyes that seemed to fix him in place, a gorgon's glare that struck him to his core.

"Can't you hear them?" the antiMort prompted, licking blood off its beak with a euphoric, if not savage, smile. "They hum with power. Power that could be yours if you'd only stop wasting time. Why are you denying yourself this? Why are you denying us?" It took a languid step forward.

"Haven't you gone through enough?"

Another step.

"Don't you deserve a reward for enduring, experiencing what you have?"

Bloodied paw prints were left in its wake, small red pools that were washing together as the miasma filled his chest. Mort shifted, twitched, railed at its proximity - but was silent.

"You and I both know that answer." Its beak parted slightly in a shadow of an amicable grin a head's length from his face, a trickle of blood escaping to its chin. "Take what's rightfully yours and you will never have to hear me again."

For a moment, silence: a hanging cloud of its own between them. Burning, stinging, raw. Expectancy. No escape.

Questions, questions, questions, all hanging by spider threads strong as steel, reverberating heavy with promise. Flitting memories: blue fire, white and gold coats, a pale figure turning her back, another one cradling her knees, fire, rage, envy, resentment, weak, weak, she won't believe, why won't she believe -

Maybe . . . Maybe he . . .

The tang of blood in his mouth brought him back. Exertion stung from his every muscle, but the price had been worth it: the antiMort lay slain at his feet, dark eyes peering at him sightlessly.

More words hung in the air, unfettered by webs: Everything has its price. Images assaulted him, more fighting, more clanging weapons, a clash that overwhelmed his mind until he knew only light and darkness. And when that too was eventually exhausted, colors came to beset him.

Weakened and weary, he shut his eyes and allowed himself to be taken in.
