"-even you Hunters-" Malodore tensed, wings flaring, but its feathers here were soft and downy, not metallic and edged. Hunters! Here? How dare th- And then the world bled away. Confused, Malodore stepped back, tail swishing around in front of it, its wings still spread as it scanned the space around it with quick, birdlike movements. "Thackery?" it called out, uncertain. "Anyone?" The only thing that answered it was a low crackling chuckle that sounded strangely familiar. Like its own voice played back to it, only with some error in the recording. Malodore's gaze narrowed as something stepped out of the miasma - no, not out of. It was the miasma's source... ... and it looked just like Malodore itself did at this moment, except its colors were warped and blurred, shifting moment by moment. "You're not listening," the doppelganger said, sharply. "Why aren't you listening?! I thought you were smart! We all thought you were smart!" Malodore took another step back. "Leave me," it warned, tail swaying in what it hoped was a menacing fashion. "Go back to your fog and-" Fog. No. No. It couldn't be- no, this wasn't grey, this was something... something else. It had to be. Surely its natural protection to Insanity hadn't failed it now... or had it, it was not a plague doctor at the moment, was it? No... no, but there were no voices, it was not the pattern - the symptoms were wrong - no, no. It couldn't be, indeed. ((Bonuses: +1 key = +1 attack to Malodore and Negadore))

The thing-that-was-not-Malodore let out a rattling hiss and jumped at the original. "You're not listening - weak, weak foul thing, rotting underneath, yes-" The (former) plague doctor jumped back, but the thing knew how to fight and delivered a few punishing pecks to Malodore's side.

Malodore swung back - it was a poor fighter in its normal state (or so it felt), and this body made things even harder. Still, it whirled around, flapping its wings for momentum and trying to whip its tailblade into the doppelganger's distorted form. The doppelganger backpedaled, but the blade hit it square in the side.
A jolt sang through the metal, and instantly the pain from the wounds Malodore had received faded, while the doppelganger reeled. What was that?!

With a snarl, the doppelganger reared back; Malodore's tailblade was still embedded in its side, and the creature snapped at the tail savagely. "Weak, stealing... always stealing, foolish," it rasped as its beak clamped around Malodore's tail. The former plague doctor yelped in pain.

"I have stolen nothing from you," Malodore hissed, and backwinged as hard as it could. The doppelganger tried to hold on, but Malodore had the advantage. Its tailblade tore out of the doppelganger's side again, and it shook itself free from the doppelganger's grip. "Fade into your fog and leave me be, bastardo!"

"Everything you have is mine. Should be mine. You won't listen.... they should all be mine. All of them," the doppelganger crooned, though there was a sharp edge to its words. It too began flapping its wings, with an air of significantly more practice than Malodore had in matters aerial. In an instant, it was aloft, then diving at Malodore, hitting the former plague doctor and sending it flying.
And not in the good, intentional way, either.

Malodore recovered as best it could, flailing its wings desperately as it rolled, feeling the pain of impact shock through its very bones. That had been a powerful strike... "I have nothing! Leave me be," it shouted, clapping its beak together angrily. "I will tear your entrails forth from your body, else!"
The doppelganger landed, and Malodore darted forward, running as fast as it could. Its opponent dodged, but Malodore still slammed into one wing, and it felt rather than heard the bones shatter, shortly eclipsed by the doppelganger's scream of rage and pain.

Now crippled, at least in terms of flight, the doppelganger hopped back, holding the injured wing close and favoring that side. "Mine... never yours," it hissed nevertheless, continuing in its utterly illogical obsession. But the injury had clearly weakened it, and its lunge only managed to pull out a beakful of primary feathers rather than pierce.

"You are finished. Lie down and be silent - no, perhaps I shall make you. You don't seem the type to know when the fight is over..." Malodore leapt forward, landing squarely on the doppelganger's back; it tottered for a moment, then fell, screaming again as it landed on the side with the broken wing.
The doppelganger thrashed for only a moment before Malodore snaked its head past the doppelganger's guard, driving its beak into the base of its neck, feeling for the spine. A messy and foul surgery, but one must do what one must-
Crunch.
It went limp, then dissipated beneath Malodore's feet. "Cazzo," Malodore muttered, spitting the taste of its ichor out as best it could. And now...
... now ...
The world shifted again, and Malodore reeled at sudden light in sharp bursts, but it understood in a moment that these were not another attack. It was a warning... of course, the shards were a warning. They always had been. They always would be. Figures reared up before it, and it stood still and approving, observing them with a calm certainty. Of course this was the catalyst. It was only logical.
Its last thought, before everything floated away, was that it would have to show Riley all of this. She would appreciate its prowess, it thought...
