The air was dark. It stung the eyes, choked the lungs. A shudder worked its way down Uuni's coat.

Squinting, she could make out a glow. An antelope darted its way past her, its eyes wide. Uuni watched it for a moment, before breaking into a jog.

On any given day, at any given moment, Uuni had a general idea of where her children might be. Now and then, they disappeared; she did not concern herself with this. After all, she kept tabs only to be sure she did not run into them prematurely. Children requested things - love, answers, favors. It was better not to meet them.

But despite what she told them, and what words may pass between her and her children, she did not want them to die. Minkah-Tzvi had been in this area. He was meddlesome, and meddlesome people were easy to track.

Perhaps he was busy saving others from the flames; perhaps he was trapped himself; or, he may not have been present in the region at all.

The young male was doing what his mother thought he would be doing. although worried about what was going, he wasn't really that sure he was trying to do. He felt lost. He didn't know what to do really, it was hard to breathe and he didn't know where his mother or his sister was. He had never seen anything like this but it was scary. He was trying to move around but as he would move in a certain direction he felt as if it would get too hot and he would turn around and start wandering the other way. It wasn't really even wandering his feet would move as quickly as they could and his heart was racing.

But as the small male dashed back and forth in the smoke, half terrified, he heard a faint sound. He had heard a similar sound before but he couldn't really place a paw on it. A soft squeak, a odd one, one that made his ears twitch and his head look around trying to figure out what was the sound that he was hearing. He coughed as he wandered through the smoke he couldn't see however he could hear, it was a little hardest since the flames around him were oddly... loud.

It was a mouse that he was hearing, a mouse, a mouse that appeared to be doing much worse then he was doing. He got closer to it and he looked at it. It looked terrified and he wasn't sure if it was because of him or because of the fire. Or what he didn't even know was quite the fire yet. He paused and then took a moment to lean closer to the bird, he as carefully as he could and leaned over. "can you hold on to my fur?" He asked the small bird with no answer he leaned over and scooped it up in his jaws as gently as he could. Trying not to move quickly and trying not to hold the bird too tight. He didn't know what to do with himself before pausing once again and then taking a moment and then thinking. Now how was he going to get out of here?

A chuff escaped what was left of his mouth, the small bird was in his mouth, it was alive however he just wanted to get out of here he was hoping that his mom would come or some one would help him, something would happen.

In principle, avoiding a fire was very easy. Stay away from the hot stuff. Given that her muzzle was open wide and she was sucking in smokey breaths in an attempt to cool her body, Uuni had a feeling this plan of attack was going poorly.

Before she had entered the mess, Uuni had examined it from a high point. Unfortunately, fires did not stay put. Whatever paths she had scouted had changed. New ones had opened to blackened earth and others had closed off.

She could die out here. Teleportation did a goddess no good when her mind was muddled with asphyxiation. ******** children.

It was time to leave. He wasn't even here. She was going to die, and he was probably off convincing some hyena not to eat the dead.

No sooner had the thought crossed her than she spied the fuzzy, browned silhouette of a male lion. The smoke was too thick to properly smell, but Uuni would know that shape anywhere. She'd avoided it, because she hated being lectured, and her son sounded like he was lecturing when he was saying hello.

"Hey," she yelled out after him, alarmed at the hoarse quality of her call. Uuni pushed her way further into the smoke. Just a few more minutes. Keep your head low. In hindsight, perhaps she should have shifted into something tiny, or something with huge wings to beat away the smoke.

The small male didn't know what to do with himself, breathing was starting to become harder and harder, and he was starting to feel like it was near impossible to see not only because of the thick smoke but also because of the way his eyes started to burn, he hated the burn he wanted to get out of there and yet as he frantically tried to escape the smoke and get himself to safety he still held the small creature gently in his jaws. He wasn't about to leave it behind. He wasn't even sure if the creature was still alive he thought it was but yet he couldn't say that he was completely sure. He stumbled around as he did he wasn't that sure of what to do with himself, his head too was starting to fog he couldn't think straight he couldn't see he was starting to have a hard time breathing.

Then there was a sound, a sound that he knew. Really it was a voice that he knew he had heard it many times before. His ears perked and he tried to pin point his mother's voice. He knew that he couldn't smell her not over the blackness that was surrounding him. He lifted his head and started to wander toward the lioness as quickly as he could the bird still hanging in his jaw. "Maommm." He called out, very muffled, to his mother. In between the smoke and the bird in his mouth he was imagining that it was a little hard to hear but he was hoping that his mom would find him. "Maaooooooommm." He tried again a little louder, where was she? What was all of this around him anyway, this was his first fire and at this point he never wated to be caught in one again.

It was definitely him. She had talked to her children about using that word. It still felt strange, foreign. It had become a second name that was not really hers, but could leave her weak-willed in the face of small, pudge-cheeked cubs.

Ducking her head low, Uuni surged through the smoke. The thickness of it had made him seem further than he was, and soon her head was bumping into his side. She fumbled, until she could sink her teeth into his mane and get a firm hold. She was not letting go of him again.

"Minkah-Tzvi," she prepared to scold him before her lungs filled with smoke and the coughing began.

"Listen to me for once and keep your head low." Though, perhaps Minkah had been the most mannered of her children, all children misbehaved. It was in their nature. "Damnit." Were they going circles?

"I'm gonna have a look." The change was fast. Her front legs distorted, toes elongate into wings and then to feathers. Uuni did not wait for the tranformation to be fully complete before she was beating the air and attempting to rise above the smoke. It thickened, and she veered rightwards until at last she was free.

The fire billowed and moved, but it held a relatively distinct line. Her son was barely visible among the shifting smoke, and if she had not known where to look, Uuni would have lost sight of him again. The falcon-goddess dove downwards, and by the time she reached the ground she had taken on a mortal lion form.

Once again, she used her mouth to pull against his mane and lead him. Panic started to push into the edges of her mind, and she began to jog, urgently wishing to be rid of the clinging smell of smoke.

Minkah was starting to get worried as she did not come at first when he called her. Was she even around? Did he leave him here? As these thoughts swirled in his head the panic in his little body started rise. He started to look around frantically and look for something to either help him or for him to figure it out. But at the same time she just wanted to flop down on the ground and take a few seconds and cry. He wanted to cry. It was a cubbish reaction and he knew that his mother hated when he did it but he wanted to cry so badly that it took him over. It made him feel bad because he was frustrated that made him want to cry. The fact that he wasn't sure if he could save the bird made him want to cry. That he didn't know where his mother was made him cry. He didn't even know if he was going to make it out alive.

A voice made his ears snap to attention. His head raised and his eyes narrowed and he tried to find what was talking to him. His head lowered right afterward though realizing that his mother seemed upset. He didn't like it when his mother was upset but yet as she talked she didn't seem -as- upset more worried. He was upset by this. There was nothing more disappointing to him then seeing that his mother was mad at him. He hated his mother being mad at him. His life was short, yet, there was nothing more that he wanted to do at the moment then to make his mother happy. Not only that but he also wanted to help others but this seemed to be a conflict of how to make his mother happy. Helping others didn't make his mother happy. "Mmookkaaaaayy." He replied muffled as he lowered his head.

Oh how he was hoping that his mother didn't hate him for having the bird.

He lifted his head and watched as his mother started to transform. To another this might have been an odd sight. To him it was pretty normal though. He was so used to it at this point that it really didn't bother him too much. He found it pretty cool actually but he knew for many others that it was odd to have their mother just turn into another creature. He looked up but still kept low to the ground. There were many times where he found it hard to listen to what his mother had to say but yet this time. It was very different.

He waited and then suddenly he found himself in his mother's jaws. He went limp but yet at the same time he did his best to hang on to the bird in his mouth. now that his mother was here he was a lost less concerned about getting out of the fire, he knew he was safe, but now his attention was to the bird.

The fire gave its best efforts; it choked lungs, left her momentarily blind and stumbling, but in the end it failed.

Paws sizzling, Uuni had stepped her way out onto charred earth. The ground still smoked and spat, leftover steam and ash whipped up into the air in the prevailing wind. She ignored the heat, knowing her footpads would later heal; she was occupied with tugging the body of her son to a cool, barren patch of ground that had been dirt and rock.

The fire had crowned behind them, producing such smoke that the flames could not be seen where they reached the tops of trees in dense brushland.

Uuni released her jaws and let her son find his own feet. The goddess coughed, shaking her self down as she blinked away embers.

"You are a stupid son," she told him immediately. "I could have died." He could have died, she did not say. The last thing she needed was her son to think she was overly concerned.

Then, softer, as though only agitated. "You have soot all over your nose and mouth." She swallowed. "It makes you look like a charcoal-eater."

Minkah went limp as he felt his mother's jaws around his scruff. He held his breath the best he could. It was hard to breath and he didn't want to start coughing and drop the bird that also hung loosely from his own set of jaws. He didn't want to loose the bird but he had no clue if it was even going to be alive, his stomach twisted in knots not sure if the bird was going to be alive or not. The little cub was really hoping that the bird was going to be alive. It was going to be really upsetting if the bird was dead.

The cub, in his own worried filled world, was not aware that he was about to hit the ground until it was too late. His rump hit the ground and as he realized it he placed the bird down and then looked up at his mother who was scolding him. His ears folded up against his head and his pale eyes looked up at his mother before he broke into a fit of coughs. "I didn't mean to mama." He said quietly, he didn't want his mother to die, or him to die but he just got lost. "I just got lost mama." He explained as quietly as he could. He knew that she didn't like it when they called her mom. But everyone else called their parents mom.

As his mother started to tell him about the soot on his face his eyes followed to the ground to the bird that was resting at his feet. At he choked a sob, instead tears just started to fall down his little face and he looked back up at his mother. "Mama, the bird died." He just wanted to help the bird and he couldn't even do that, and his mother was upset with him. He wasn't sure what else could make this day bad. He just wanted the bird to be alive, then he could show his mother that he did something good. He strived very hard to make his mother proud, constantly. He was an odd little guy that was for sure. He never raelly fit into his family.

Uuni felt her mouth start to close together. The black lines that shaped her muzzle thinned and she rolled her eyes.

"So you did."

She dipped her head and began to wash away the soot with her tongue, pausing as the young son began to stream tears. Crying was not a strong point for Uuni - but what mortal emotion was?

"A lot of birds died," Uuni explained. Though, that probably wasn't going to help his tears. She washed those away as well.

"You didn't die." Damn the bird, really. Dumb, selfless son.

"C'mon. Your sister will have a fit without you." She picked him up and moved him, attempting to get him to take to his feet. If she had to, she would drape him over her back and let him rest while they traveled. Smoke-filled lungs, death, and a scolding were probably a lot for a small mortal cub to handle.

Minkah sat still sniffling as his mother started to clean his head. His tail flicked behind him as he thought about what his mother was saying. What she had to say was true. He had to admit that he knew everything that she was saying was true but then again at the same time he couldn't help but to feel sad for the one little bird that he couldn't say. "I can't save all of the birds." His voice was quiet he was mostly talking to himself. He knows that he can't save everything but he just wanted to help the one little bird that he found. He looked down at it and sighed as he let his mother lick the tears away from his face.

"Okay." He said as his mother lifted him he coughed a his mother lifted him. He didn't really want to see his sister, really he just wanted to be by himself for the rest of the day. For now he knew the closest that he would get is just waiting to get back home as his mother walked. As she walked he though, thought about everything that he couldn't save, and how badly he wanted to save everything. He felt like he could if he tried hard enough. He was hoping that he could. Maybe when he got bigger and older? He had a lot of thinking to do.
