History: Steve grew up in Brooklyn during the Great Depression, often being bullied. Steve's father died when he was still young, and his mother just after he'd finished high school. Steve was enrolled as a fine arts student when WWII began, but hearing of the atrocities committed by Nazi Germany, he tried to enlist in the Army. He failed to pass the physical requirements, but was invited to volunteer for Project: Rebirth. Steve accepted and became the first test subject.
He was dosed with the super soldier serum and bombarded with vita-rays, which augmented his body to the peak of human efficiency. He became Captain America, serving not only as a counter-intelligence agent but also as a symbolic US hero, countering Nazi Germany's propaganda. He went on to lead a team of soldiers, the Howling Commandos, to many successes throughout the war.
In the final days of WWII, Steve boarded a plane laden with explosives and bound for New York. Knowing that if this plane were to go down over America then many hundreds of thousands of lives would be lost, Steve crashed the plane into the icy waters of the Atlantic, giving his life so that others could be spared.
