Name: Nergui “Rat” Ganbaatar
Race:
Shinigami
Squad:
10
High Concept Aspect: “I have half the Armory stashed away…”
If someone was to describe Ganbaatar as a kleptomanic pack rat, that person would have shown incredible insightfulness. A simpler man may refer to Rat as an incorrigible embezzler. Regardless of what descriptors are used, Rat tends to assesses all sorts of things and thinks up situations where said objects may be potentially useful. This had led to the creation of a large cache of objects where only half have any obvious use, such as armor. As a member of the Tenth Squad, this has also led to the miserly squirreling away of his precious munitions and significant amounts of clay. It also isn’t uncommon for Rat to look through trash or other people’s things if he suspects there’s something that may be important there, must to the chagrin of others.
Trouble Aspect: “.. and you can’t have it.”
Rat is also incredibly, incredibly reluctant to part with any of his hidden cache of weapons and miscellaneous items. He is very possessive of everything he has and letting other people use them, even if he took things solely for the purpose of letting other people use them, makes him paranoid that whatever object in question will not be returned, will somehow be wasted, or used inappropriately. He is also secretive about his cache and refuses to disclose its location(s) to anyone. This refusal to share also extends as a basic distrust of everyone, not in the idea that everyone is inherently evil but that people, including himself, work towards their own benefit above all else.
Appearance:
Rat is about 5’8” in height and appears to be of Mongolian descent. His face is hawk-like and narrow while his sharp eyes are hazel. His black hair is about shoulder length and Rat usually keeps it in a messy queue. His hair has a slightly wavy nature and his mouth is small. His face can show a large range of emotions. Rat also dons the basic Shinigami uniform which he takes rudimentary care of. His uniform can often be seen with dirt, scorch marks, or holes in it. Other pieces of armor often accompany his regular Shinigami uniform, most commonly in the form of gauntlets, vambraces, boots, and/or shin guards, most of which Rat had found/stole himself.
Personality:
Rat’s general philosophy is to stay out of mind, partially due to paranoia that an officer or high-ranking official would confront him about his habits and try to confiscate his cache. Some people consider Rat to be a man of few words but the truth is he only becomes talkative when he becomes interested in either the subject or the person he’s conversing with. A basic belief of Rat is that people, himself included, always work towards their own benefits first and foremost, regardless of what they may say or believe. As such, he has a base distrust of others, though it doesn’t really hinder his interactions. That same belief has also made Rat rather cynical towards the “holier-than-thou, high-and-mighty” type who believes they have an important mission or cause to fulfill.

Background: Where Did You Come From?
Born in the outskirts of the Rukongai and quickly abandoned at a young age, Rat only managed to survive due to being taken into by a band of thieves. It wasn’t a merry or a happy band of close comrades but a group of individuals, each one unable to survive on their own, filled with strife and cliques etching out a meager existence. Growing up, Rat learned the basics of surviving out in the Rukongai and the importance of being unseen. The lack of comradery lead to a lonely childhood of petty crimes. But then, everything changed when the Shinigami attacked.
By the time Rat was around thirteen, the Shinigami clad in their black robes had come into his district. Being in a den of thieves himself, Rat managed to experience first-hand how wiling people who had known each other for many years were to sell out others for personal gain or survival. Some of those who had sold out others weren’t even benefitted and were labeled by some Shinigami as lesser beings, thus claiming any agreements made could be null and voided. It was towards the beginning of that when Rat decided he had to get out before the wave of persecution caught up to him too. He had heard tales from others, mostly raiders and ransackers who always brought back great riches, that the inner parts of the Rukongai were much more prosperous and people lived in comfort. With that in mind, Rat decided to set off towards the inner districts in hopes of a better life.
Aspect: “People work for themselves, nothing more.”
Rising Conflict: What Shaped You?
As he traveled, Rat soon discovered that his situation was hardly unique. He had come across bands of other migrants seeking a better life in the inner districts. Experience soon taught him that it was better to travel alone and not draw attention to himself as he watched countless others get arrested and sent back to their districts regardless of their situation. Neither was the inner Rukongai the paradise he had heard. While the shelters had evolved from basic, hastily erected tents and huts to actual houses, many people still struggled to get by with what they had.
Soon, Rat decided that the only ones who lived well in the Rukongai were the Shinigami. They were often hailed as protectors in the inner districts and treated with respect. It only took a short logical jump for Rat to decide his next step would be to join the self-same Shinigami and set about figuring out how to do so while still stealing to stay alive. When he eventually worked up the courage to visit the recruitment center, he found, much to his surprise, that the Academy was accepting anyone with an ounce of spiritual energy in them and he fortunately had enough potential that they overlooked his illiteracy, home district, and lack of a background. Times were desperate, it seemed.
While he would train with the others, Rat ended up being separated and assigned a tutor in order for him to learn how to read and write at a decent level. Though it was difficult and tedious work, he eventually became accustomed to it and an opening in one class appeared, allowing him to be admitted. His fellow students had told him the former student who he was replacing was at the top of his class and had been murdered. Hypothesizes and rumors were raised about why, a jealous student, some secret organization, the beginning of an invasion, so on and so forth. As a result, Rat decided it was a better idea to fade away than to try to make himself stand out and he strove to maintain mediocrity for the short while he was in that class.
Aspect: “Out of sight, out of mind.”
