"How long will you be gone?"
"Until past your bedtime, Daisybutton. I told you, the vigil's lasting until midnight."
"So long!" Flora draped herself over the couch, and as she did so, the DS she had been prodding at idly fell from her hands. She hastened to retrieve it, shooting him an embarrassed smile, but her father wasn't amused.
"We all want Megan to come home, and so far there's been no sign of her," he chided. "The best thing we can do now is hope and be there for Ms. Nowakowski. You like her, don't you? She would go to a vigil if you went missing." As an afterthought: "And don't you dare."
Flora knew she couldn't win this, that her father was leaving tonight and not coming back no matter what she said, so she merely nodded glumly and took the scolding, her cheeks turning a shameful red. Of course she was being selfish, but wasn't Ms. Nowakowski also?? She was keeping her dad until eleven on family night, when they usually tried to cook their own meal and watch television together until she fell asleep. Family night only came once a week, and Flora had waited those six long days for this one. A candlelight vigil wouldn't make Megan come home, not even if all the UMA employees attended.
That kind of thought was wrong, and she knew it, but if she had at least been allowed to go with her father, she would have been better behaved about the whole affair. At least she'd get to spend time with him that way. "I just wanted to spend time with you," she said sheepishly. "I'm not selfish."
Her father's face softened. "I know you aren't, Daisybutton, but you're not a grownup either, and you have school tomorrow. You don't want to spend half the night sleeping on my back. Anyway, you like Olivia, too. I'm sure she'll cook a much better dinner than I could."
"That's not what counts," Flora muttered, but by now she had given up. She didn't mind, she knew she wasn't supposed to mind since this kind of thing was all very sad, but she did, and it only made her feel worse about everything, herself included. Better to keep quiet when she felt bad rather than make too much of a scene. First and foremost, she wanted her father to like her, and if she couldn't act like a grownup, he wouldn't.
Still, when the knock came at the door, Flora's feet dragged when she answered it, and she couldn't help but sound reluctant when she opened it for her babysitter.
"Hi Olivia," she muttered, looking at the ground. Her father came up behind her, ruffling her hair.
"Evening to you," he greeted, grabbing his coat and flashing a grin. "Thanks so much for doing this- I've left a list of instructions on the fridge, and help yourself to anything, wi-fi, snacks, TV, whatever. I'll be back by 11:30 at the latest."

As the doorway opened t reveal the tiny blonde girl, Olivia immediately greeted her with a 'Hey Flora', as excited as she could muster after seeing the child's lack of enthusiasm. Once her father had adressed the teen though, she looked to him with a smile.
" No problem at all, Mr. Gandy! I'm happy to do it," she stepped out of the way as he gathered his coat, moving to stand beside Flora and resting a friendly hand on her shoulder," I'll make sure Flora is happy, fed, and in bed before you get home." She gave the clover-eyed girl a soft pat on the shoulder and flashed her a grin before returning her gaze to the man.
"So don't worry about us! You just stay safe, and good luck."

Flora's father looked relieved, clearly unusued to and still hesitant about leaving his daughter alone for even an evening. He leaned over kissed Flora's cheek, saying, "Goodbye Daisybutton!"
"Dad, not in front of Olivia!" She pushed him away, but seemed to regret it right after, grabbing his hand and shaking it to show that there weren't any hard feelings. He laughed and turned to Olivia once more.
"Thanks again. Ever since Megan vanished, she's been a little off-kilter, has Flora, and I think that this'll be good for her. You're practically like a big sister to her with all the babysitting you do and the dinners we have at your mother's house." He grinned at Olivia and departed, leaving her alone with Flora, who stared up at her babysitter somewhat reluctantly.
"It's family night," she said in a mildly accusatory way. She liked Olivia though, so she added, "Sorry, I just... It's supposed to be family night."
It was hard to explain to Olivia why she had been looking so forward to this family night, because it would involve explaining how tiring things had been lately, which would further require her to explain all the magic that had been happening in her life lately, and the monsters she had to deal with, and that there was something evil or whatever living in the UMA. People didn't take to hearing those things well. She'd sound completely crazy. But that was how it had been, and all she had wanted was a night in with her dad after a very long week, and now it wasn't going to happen and she couldn't even complain because the reason it wasn't happening was important to a lot of people that she cared about.

Olivia giggled at the father's affectionate nickname for his daughter, and waved to the man as he finally made his way out into the night. It was as the door clicked closed though, that a small voice beside her grasped her attention once more.
' It's family night.'
The statement was bitter, though as the babysitter looked down to the girl with raised brows, she could not say she was especially surprised. Flora had not seemed all to enthused about Olivia's arrival nor Mr. Gandy's departure, and after the child tacked on an apology, further explaining the importance of the night, the rose-eyed girl offered her own condolences.
" Don't sweat it, kid," she smiled, raising a hand to ruffle the lamenting girl's cropped hair, " I get it. That's a tough break, but I'm sure your dad will make it up to you." Retracting her hand she grinned, attempting to keep the mood from falling further. " And if that's the case then I guess I just have to be an extra rad sitter or something to make sure the night is still fun, right?" Olivia shrugged, giving a small chuckle," and since I'm not entirely sure how to make that happen, I'm going to need a lot of suggestions for what you want to do. I'll be down for anything."

Flora smiled despite herself. Her bad moods didn't keep for long, and she liked Olivia, who had been like a cool older sister to her for as long as she had been her sitter. Flora didn't have many older girls in her life to look up to and Olivia was tall and blonde like Flora, but also very, very pretty. She was the kind of teenager that you saw on television, and Flora had always admired her, even if she was no replacement for her father.
"I want to bake something!" she insisted. "Show me how to bake something." Whenever Olivia let her choose what to do, she invariably chose things she had seen girls in books and television do at sleepovers. "And I want to try to braid your hair. Can you show me how? Oh!" Her eyes widened. "I forgot that I have a loot bag for you from my birthday!!" She dashed up the stairs to her room, yelling, "Berightback, berightback!" and coming back down with a bag stuffed with green paper and little dollar store trinkets.
"Dad said that we could get you one even though you didn't come." Flora blushed and looked at the ground. "Sorry I didn't invite you, I--"
"Didn't want to invite my babysitter." she admitted lamely. As cool as Olivia was, it felt too awkward. Plus Olivia had probably been busy with Older Kid Stuff.
