Makena was out by himself that day, crouched amongst the tall grasses as he watched two adult males moving past - out towards the borders where he was told he must never go. They were scouts, his mother had told him. Their job to protect them from anyone who might wish to harm them. Mean lions, perhaps, but mostly those mean hyenas. He'd been told a few stories about those hyenas and their slobbery mouths filled with mean teeth. Was he frightened? Yes, perhaps a little. He wondered if those scouts were frightened too, or whether adults didn't feel such things.

And then his belly growled and he gave a small whimper and sat back on his haunches to pat a paw against his stomach. Scouts were all well and good but they didn't bring home any food and he was hungry!!

He watched a beetle crawl along a blade of drooping grass and wondered, for a moment, how it would taste. Would his teeth even be able to break that hard shell? Would it taste as nasty as it looked with all those creepy legs and the strange jaws attached to its face? Hm...there was really only one way to find out, wasn't there?

Slowly, he inched towards the poor, unfortunate beetle...

Having been recently groomed thoroughly by her mother, little Subira was given the go ahead to do a little venturing out. Not too much, though, as her protective mother would become quite worried if her precious daughter was gone too long and out of her sight. White paws stepped soundly along the grasses, ears slightly elevated to listen to what was around her, pale eyes sliding about to check her surroundings too. She was a curious girl, that was to be sure, but she was also cautious from the story's and lessons her mother had taught.

On her stroll, she too saw the pair of guards that took to their post, keeping a safe distance from that boarder that was warned of. And she wasn't going to break her mothers rules. Staring at the males, her tail gave a small flick back and forth, round ears lifting and swiveling forward to show clear interest. What was it like out there...? Oh to be older and able to do so much more...
Slightly caught up in her daydreamy state, Subira almost missed that there was another individual present. Another cub. Gaze turning to him, she watched curiously as he pursued a bug... ears wavering with slight uncertainty, staying right where she was. Bugs were ok... but sometimes they felt weird in your mouth. Nose wrinkling just slightly, she decided to watch this other youth from afar... wondering just what he might do to the shiny scuttling bug.. intrigued.

Makena licked his lips, lowering himself further into prime pouncing position just like his mother had taught him. He and his siblings had practised their pouncing technique for hours, though he always seemed to be much slower than the others. When he had got upset about it his parents had just looked down at him adoringly and he had felt better.

"Okay, bug, here goes!"

And he pounced -- though not quite far enough.

He crashed into the grass and the blades moved so violently that the beetle was tossed into the air. What came next was epic battle between beetle and lion cub; much scrabbling of paws and clouds of dust. Eventually, though, Makena emerged the winner, the beetle clamped in his mouth, working its little legs furiously--

--until it went crunch between his teeth.

The taste was not so bad at first but the longer it stayed in his mouth the more gross it got and, in the end, he had to force himself to swallow the morsel, wrinkling his snout and hissing in dismay. Ew. Beetles did not taste good.

Black and gold capped head lifted with surprise as the male cubbin took a leap of faith at the juicy bug. Watching the scene unfurl, the battle rage, Subira's tail flickered with the slight curiosity starting to swell within. She was further intrigued to see that the beetle had been caught, and made into a snack... though the victor didn't seem too pleased with his catch. Ears pinning back with uncertainty, she casually went on to keep her distance, but walked a little bit towards him, as if searching for a bug of her own to catch.

Sure they weren't the best things, but... she didn't always pursue them that often. Crouched a little along the grasses, her ears would perk as a few moths fluttered out, gnats already zipping this way and that, fly's alongside them. Finally a few grasshoppers leapt out, and back into the grass that they camouflaged in so well. Pricking up her black ears, she stared at where they'd landed, as if waiting for something to happen... but nothing did. Walking closer, the grasshoppers took off like a herd of wildabeast! Alarmed, she simply watched them dash off, a sea of light green diving and bouncing in the grass blades, heading right towards the other cub. Glancing to him, she scooted back some and gave an apologetic expression. Well... this was embarrassing, and... awkward.

Oh! More bugs! Perhaps these would taste nicer? Although they were the jumpy ones and not necessarily easier to catch. He spat the remnants of the beetle from his mouth in an uncouth spray and tried to slap the grasshoppers to the ground.

Unfortunately, these bugs managed to evade his paws.

And then Makena looked up and spotted a cub around the same age as him. A cub staring at him from only a few paces away. "Hey!" He blurted. "Were you trying to hunt me?" He asked, thinking of the games that he and his siblings played. All for practise with real hunting, their parents had said. "If so, you got seen. That's no good." And, just in case she hadn't been 'hunting' him he asked: "I'm Makena. Who're you? Do you have any food? I'm hungry..." And as if to prove it, his belly chose that time to growl loudly. He gave an embarrassed laugh and pulled himself to his paws, his short, stubby legs carrying him closer. His little nose worked, trying to determine if she had anything on her. It didn't appear that she did.

Oh well...

Subira's ears flipped straight up as the other cub prompted her. It also caused for her lashes to blink incredulously a few times by the question posed. Hunt him? Frowning faintly, she gave a small shake of her head. That was silly. Why would she hunt her own kind? Unless.. he was implying the act of play? But even that she hardly engaged in with others, unless it were her family... Ears pinning back, displaying her uncertain and awkward disposition, the little pale hooded cub kept her distance for awhile... to observe and wait for his move; something her mother had taught her was a wise course of action in any uneasy situations.

The plethora of questions did throw her off though, and her head was lifted once again, ears wavering forward and back, forward and back, lips pressing and brows creasing as she found herself unsure of which question to answer first. He certainly talked a lot.. Clearing her throat softly, she finally spoke, in a very controlled tone for one so young, "Subira... I'm Subira." she introduced first, tail twitching awkwardly once, "N-no... I don't have any food..." she muttered, paws clutching the earth as he grew closer, ears folding back for a last time, "uhm... hasn't your mother any food for you..?" she asked slowly, and somewhat cautiously. That's where the majority of her meals came from, after all.. surely it was the same for others?

Tag here and over in Ithambo for Cahala <333 Sorry for the delay. I was without internet for a couple of weeks during a house move, but am back now!

"Weeeell." He kicked out at the sand sheepishly, folding back his ears. "She did bring us something to eat earlier but it was all tough, stringy meat." That hadn't stopped him from fighting to get more than his fair share. "So I'm still feeling hungry but there won't be anything more for a while. She told me to go and play until later." But playing was hard when you had an empty belly. And then his ears perked with an idea and he shifted even closer, seemingly aware of her cautious demeanour.

"You. You're a girl. Girls can hunt well, right? Better than boys? Could you hunt something? I could...maybe try and help..." He gave her a sheepish little grin that suggested he'd rather do the lazy thing and sit and wait for her to return with a snack. Already his mind was picturing a big fat mouse or a succulent hair.

His mouth watered and a string of drool hung from his chin.

Ah stringy meat... tough meat. Not the most delicious, but it was part of a common diet. So she was able to give a subtle understanding nod. That didn't sound tastey at all. But her mother always told her that even if it wasn't the most appealing, food had its job and regardless of if it wasn't a favorite taste or not, it was to be eaten to keep everyone going.

And here came more questions, which made the tiny cub tense again, ears pinning straight back, eyes creasing slightly. Her? Hunt?! But... she was just a cub, like him! The only thing she could really catch once in awhile were lazy, or old bugs! a little embarrassed, warmth prickled her cheeks, "u-uhm.. well... are bugs ok..?" she asked hesitantly... her eyes slowly drifting off to avoid any sort of strange looks he might give her.

Buuuuugs? Ew. No. He was tired of bugs! Why were all the females around him so mean? First his mum and now this cub. Wasn't she supposed to be his friend now that they had spoken? That was how it worked didn't it? And friends did stuff for each other.

He puffed out his cheeks as if readying to enter into a temper-tantrum, but blew out his breath a moment later and gave a deep sigh. "Okay, seeing as neither of us can hunt the tasty stuff, shall we go sneak over to see if the hunting party has anything?" It wasn't too far and likely no one would notice a pair of cubs slinking around the place looking to steal a quick meal. It sounded like a pretty decent plan and he was quite proud of it.

"What do you say, huh? Don't worry. If anyone says anything we can just say that we were told to go there because we're growing up!"

Oh yeah, it was a fail-safe plan, for sure.
