History: Bruce was the son of Brian Banner, an atomic physicist who worked on producing clean nuclear power as an energy source, and his wife Rebecca. Brian believed his exposure to radiation had mutated his son's genes. Bruce showed signs of high intelligence at an early age which strengthened his father's belief. Already an alcoholic and jealous of the love Rebecca had for their son, Brian became abusive to Bruce and when Rebecca intervened, Brian murdered her. Brian was sent to a psychiatric institute and Bruce was placed in the care of his aunt.

The trauma of this experience caused Bruce to develop a split personality in order to deal not only with it but also with the constant abuse and bullying he received from his peers. Bruce became more and more withdrawn, holding in all his rage and sorrow. He graduated from high school at the top of his class and went on to study at Penn. State and Navapo college in New Mexico before obtaining his doctorate from CalTech.

Bruce then went to work for the US Defense Department, researching methods of duplicating the process that created Captain America. He and his associates eventually hit upon what might have been success in their efforts through the use of gamma radiation, but while making some calibrations to the gamma chamber, the radiation bombardment process was mistakenly activated. Locked inside, Bruce was hit with extremely dangerous levels of radiation, triggering his first transformation into The Hulk. The creature destroyed the lab and all research materials with it along with most of the scientists.

Waking with no memory of what had transpired - only the knowledge that he was the cause - he fled from the laboratory, becoming a fugitive of the US.
