This Document is for both heroes and villains. For the heroes reading this, it is to give you some insight as to why we do what we do, in a roleplaying sense. For my fellow villains, it's to give you some pointers, help you avoid pitfalls, and lead to ( hopefully) better RP for all of us. With that, I shall begin.
First off, we are villains. In character we are Bad People. For whatever reason we stray from the light of that which is good to do what we do. That does not mean that out of game we are bad people. I tire of out of character mud slinging because of something someone did in game. On the other side of that coin, just because you play an evil b*****d, that doesn't mean you have to be a d**k.
Secondly, We are by necessity stronger ( each in our own ways ) than you heroes out there. This is not brought up for bragging rights or to see who's E-peen in larger. It is a simple fact. If each hero was singley as powerful as their enemy, we would get steamrolled by sheer numbers. Now, that doesn't mean The Riddler can fist-fight superman and come out on top, but I'd love to see the kryptonian deal with some of Eddie's riddles. Now, my stating our singular superiority doesn't mean I'm giving license to create an OC or pick an established character to make yourself God ( Darkseid, disregard this if you read it ) The exact opposite. God-stomping the heroes with your awesome evil might all the time is damn boring, unless the story calls for it. If your idea of a great RP is Modding your way through the entire DCU hero set, perhaps this game isn't for you, and there are nice coloring books in the corner you can deface.
Third, I'll bring up the subject of Villainy, Modding and where to draw the line. As villains, a small bit of what is quaintly refered to as "Moding" or "god-moding" is, I believe, necessary. If a hero bursts into my secret lair, I''m not going to point out the fact that the area is laced with explosives in the opening description. Make them work for it. That doesn't mean you never take a hit and always auto-hit when you strike ( which is sometimes also necessary ). The occasional "Mod" is just that, a "mod"ification to the situation to turn it to your advantage. It is a subtle tool, not a beatstick. If you have to resort to modding too often, perhaps villain roles are not right for you. An excellent example is Darkseid. The fella playing him knows when to roll the big die, and when to let things lie. He doesn't roll darkseid into the Titans tower and Omega beam them into nothingness. It just isn't done. But if you ruffle his feathers and get the big ol boy angry...well, that is your fault. I've also seen people get angry at certain Jokers for dodging things that they shouldn't be able to. The melting pot of Gaia requires these situations because, lets say Powergirl punches the joker all out in the kisser. The man's neck will break and he will become a pez dispenser. The same goes for eye-lasers. Her on Gaia some villains face heroes they never really see, and are forced to step their game up to survive, and continue to play and what is that? Have Fun.
On the subject of having fun, I bring up one of the many sore subjects I know that many villain players deal with. We do not get to win. We plan, we plot, we scheme, but at the end of the day we know the heroes will win. That is our JOB. We lose, so the game is fun for everyone. The trick is, to learn to do it with some grace and dignity. If you get beaten, congratulate the hero that took you down. Your loss means everything returns to the status quo and the cycle turns again. We get the upper hand, they save the day. As villains, we need to enjoy losing, and make every victory cost them just as much as our loss, but that is another topic, for just us villains. For you heroes out there, the next time you have an awesome battle that you walk away from, thank the villain that you played opposite, you have no idea what it will do for them. Also, without character death involved of course, maybe take a fall once in a while. Small victories are where it counts for us.
That is about it for this Rant. I'm sure there will be more forthcoming. I honestly hope this helps both sides of the Rping fence. If you have any further questions, would like Rping skill help or want to yell at me because you think this is crap, feel free to contact me. I will, of course, respond in kind.
