Regardless of the winds, Luci had been insistent on settling by companion outside the safety of her glass bottle. She’d gotten used to bottle after seeing it’s advantages- like hiding from curious hands that sought to snuff out her crown, or avoiding that river crossing which had nearly scared her out of her wits. But she also knew that Kalyan would stuff her in there as punishment if he saw fit, and so she still looked upon the bottle with irritation. She didn’t mean to be in a sour mood; honestly she was glad that he was being fairly complacent today, but she was starting to get stir crazy.

They sat amongst slacking seaman and coils of rope. Never had she been this close to the sea, all of their travels and jobs had kept them inland. Everything they had seen had been exciting to her; from the run down villages and farms to the cold city of Anica. So when the tall man had decided to sit by the boring docks of all places as soon as they entered the city, Luci was quick to vocalize just how much she did not care to be there.

“Such grand city, and we’re wasting it by some boats,” the little body of light sighed, bundled as close to his discarded overcoat as she could get without singeing the cloth. “How long are we going to stay here?”

“You can wander off and get lost on your own if you like. You’ve done nothing but complain since we sat down.” He didn’t bother to look up from whatever he was writing. Though at the moment a particularly strong gust blew across them, and she was cast in shadow when he angled himself just so to keep her from toppling over.

“It’s just- everything is so large here. And bright! Did you see all the people when we came in? Or the pretty building with the shiny gate and fancy stone!” He didn’t react. She looked up to him then, her little white mouth wobbling. “I said-”

“We’re only here to stock and gather ourselves. Nothing more.” He stated before she had a chance to whine.

“Oh! So we are going to walk around?”

“Only for errands. No sightseeing. I’m not quite sure I trust,” there was long pause filled with scribbling, “another city this…crowded.”

She bounced in place. “That’s no reason! You’re being para...par…a…”

“Paranoid.”

“Yes! That!”

Kalyan sighed through his nose, “Luci please. I needed a place to sit and think. Give me a few moments to finish, and I’ll consider ‘exploring’.” He’d been writing within a bound book full of loose papers; the place he kept the notes of his travels and the few ‘plagues’ they met that were supposedly like her. She’d noticed that he had been looking at the travel bag frequently, and knew he was most likely writing about her ‘sibling’ within. She considered being nosy, but now he was baiting her in exchange for her silence. However long a few moments was, if it was longer than sixty seconds then this was one game she was going to lose. Horribly.

Amory Kempe was on a mission, and it was not from Panyma.

Rather, it was from the Council, and it was one of the increasing number of chores that had been heaped upon him since being elected Counselor. The Councilman who had come to make the request was a respectable scientist, well versed in theology, and seeking an audience with some august members of one of the Panymisian brotherhoods on the other coast. Heckling him on either shoulder were a gaggle of black chess piece stunteds, who seemed to have quite exhausted him, but after gaining his assurance that he did have business in Mishkan and the stunteds hadn't merely heckled him into going, Amory had granted him permission to take leave on one of the several ships in the Council's employ, most of which were being rented around Imisus and Panymium now that international borders were closed and the budget was stretched sliver-thin. He could have set the task aside there, let an errand boy select a ship, but this particular day, Amory was sick of being cooped up in an office, and his schedule was unusually free due to an error on the part of a student who had again failed to show up for his meeting. The smell of the sea and the sight of the docks was a refreshing change of pace, but entirely foreign to Amory, who had never traveled from Imisus in his life.

He was sure that the same was true of Professor Milton, who was quite adept at theological debates, and impossibly bad at handling motion sickness. He and the Professor had a passing acquaintance, something that could be said of Amory and almost every Scientist on the Council, man or woman. Doctor Kempe was a social creature by nature, but Professor Milton was not, so he supposed the ideal thing would be to find him a large, smooth sailing ship with room for him and a guide to help him handle the voyage. He somehow doubted the chess stunteds would be much comfort to anybody.

He wasn't quite sure which ship might be best, though, and supposed that there was nothing for it but to ask for aid. He was curious enough to listen to how it worked so that in future he might know how to do it himself. The thought that he might need an aid for something that seemed on the face of it simple was irritating, and Amory, a hands on individual if there ever was one, was eager to rectify the gap in his knowledge. The problem was finding someone who knew what they were talking about, and he was about to seek out the captain of one of the remaining Council vessels when he saw a bright light out of the corner of his eye, which refocused upon second glance into the image of a Grimm and his Plague conversing. Amory hesitated, torn between finishing this chore and nosing into somebody else's business, but he couldn't resist, and flagged down the man and his Phasmas, waving cheerfully. "Hello there, my good man!" he called, scurrying to the pair of them. "I wonder if-"

That was as far as he got, however, because the clumsy Counselor then promptly tripped over his own feet and into the grimy, somewhat slippery dock.
