Personality: Cruel and bloodthirsty, Jian Lin Kuei believes simply that all human beings are inferior, and that at any point that he comes to believe a person should die, they will invariably die. He is jovial in his cruelty, spilling blood and spewing one-liners with aplomb, but he spares no one from his ruthless streak if he feels they deserve it. His is an iron fist, caked in the dried remnants of his enemies' lifeblood. In fact, it may be more interesting to consider if there is anything or anyone he wouldn't kill than it would be to ask what he would at any given time...
Bio: From the day that he was born, Jian Lin Kuei knew what his destiny would one day be. Son of Lu Bei Lin Kuei, immortal head of the Lin Kuei Assassins...a particularly deadly sect of the Amakusu Crime Family, Jian was destined to one day be gifted with immortality and a large measure of control over the Syndicate. Perhaps because of his entitlement, Jian did not turn out to be the obedient son that his father imagined...from the beginning he was cruel, unusually ruthless and bloodthirsty, and he openly seemed to disdain the secrets and rules which had kept their family in the dark and attached to their masters for the last two centuries. He hated and he wanted more and more by the day...smiling and laughing delightedly as he learned how to fight, how to hurt, how to kill...and with time he grew more and more distant from the members of his Syndicate and even his own family.

During his youth, however, there were many who remembered a single person capable of fighting against him on even terms, who could curb his temper on occasion and convince him to back down from fights that could not be won and/or should not be fought. Though nobody is allowed to speak that young man's name with such reverence these days, even now his existence and closeness to the former head of the family remains a sore spot for Jian Lin Kuei...one he hopes to one day exorcise from his mind permanently.

At age 18, nearly full-grown, Jian's reputation as an unparalleled fighter and assassin finally earned him induction into the highest order of the Lin Kuei Family. Called to stand before all of his elders, the holder of the Grand Panacea received and granted a request for the elixir...and on that day it was consumed by Jian Lin Kuei, rechristened the Starless Dragon of Oshu. And what followed proved that this gift would become the greatest mistake they had made in centuries...for a coup was planned, the elixir granting Jian not just the power to live forever, but the power to kill the other immortals within the Lin Kuei Clan with a simple command. In the days that followed the assassinations began, quiet at first, but eventually as the elders realized that the attacks were taking place from within their clan, battles broke out between the followers of Lu Bei and those of his son Jian, with many dead on either side of the conflict. Jian had come to believe that his father's skills were dull and his clan was becoming rusty, weak in its subservience to the other clans as assassins. The only way to make a true name for themselves was to cut off their own heads...and replace it with a new one.

The final domino to fall was Lu Bei, consumed by the jaws of the Starless Dragon...and though his rival was said to have escaped the destruction, there was no room for doubt as to who ruled over the strongest Syndicate branch in the country...Jian Lin Kuei!

During the 1700s an alchemic experiment took place under the direction of members of the crime family who sought the secret to gaining immortal life. However, as a byproduct of their research they called into the world a demon...and this demon offered them a wish in return for the amusement they brought. Each of the three elders agreed...their desire was for the Grand Panacea, the elixir of immortality. As immortal men who could live for centuries, the leaders of the clan began research that would have been impossible to complete in a lifetime...gaining the secrets of true alchemy in the process to imbue their strongest members with powers beyond those of a normal human. From creating Homunculus to bodily alteration to altering matter, each member of the clan's DNA, when altered, unlocks a different alchemic skill (likely altered from their original special abilities, not unlike the Human Weapons Unit). Using these powers, given only to the highest-ranking and most trustworthy of the Families, the Amakusu continue to operate without fear of death...the secret of immortality held only by one man at a time at any given time...except by death via another immortal, that is. If wounded or 'killed', their blood will pull their body back together and heal the wounds. The only way to die is to be 'absorbed' by another immortal who places their right hand upon the immortal's head and thinks the words 'I want to eat'. This will result in the absorption of the immortal's body, memories, and powers into the consuming immortal.]

Starless Dragon
The Starless Dragon is an alchemic technique which is capable of manipulating space within the absence of light (shadows) into a tangible, solid, and highly durable material form; though theoretically it would be possible to create nearly any shape or form, the only shape he has ever cared to create or practiced is that of a long (possibly as long as 20 meters if enough power is used) dragon with razor-sharp and rock-hard scales and a toothy bull-headed (literally) maw capable of biting and tearing its enemies asunder. By coiling its long body it can defend, and by extending and biting it can attack, but carelessly attacking the sharp scales can deal serious damage to the attacker as well and cause massive bleeding...something he loves.
[Solidify shadow into a manipulable, 10-20 meter-long dragon which moves at twice his own speed at the command of his hands. Can be used to attack and defend, or deal damage in defense via razor-sharp scales. Ability does not alter Jian's stats directly in any way.]


Boneless Dragon
(Skill originally belonged to Jian Lin Kuei's father, but was absorbed when Jian devoured his father during the 'Starless Night Coup'.)
A skill created and mastered by one of the strongest immortals to ever live, Lu Bei Lin Kuei, the Boneless Dragon technique allows the users to alter his own bone density in order to absorb and deal greater damage to enemies with physical attacks. In addition, the user can increase the growth, healing, and regeneration of bone tissue to impossible rates...allowing bones to protrude from the body and be removed from the body (and wielded as weapons) without any real injury to the user. One preferred technique of the Boneless Dragon is to remove the spine from the base of the skull and harden it to use as a melee weapon against enemies. Despite decreased damage suffered and the focused bone regeneration, however, it is still possible to receive damage to bones and body, including breaks, sprains, etc. (and damage to muscles and organs is still possible if hit in the right places).

Personality: Naomi is a noble lady in looks and manor, however, she is not archaic in her actions. She has changed over the years as culture has changed, but all the same, maintains an aura that some normal people find unsettling, like a cold chill.
At heart, she is caring to people within the family, and those that have earned her trust, and if you aren't in the family, her trust is difficult to earn.
Bio: Naomi was a lady of nobility some 270 years ago, born into the families of the Lin Kuei, and from a young age was taught the arts of disguise, deception and assassination. As she grew, she fell into her role more and more, sharpening her skill to the point she was capable of becoming someone else entirely if the situation called for it. She was most often sent when infiltrate and eliminate was the name of the game. That being said, there were a number of occasions where she worked alongside Kimiko, as their specialties meshed very nicely. Naomi proved herself on many occasions, and the two developed a strong mutual respect, and eventually built a friendship.

Allowing her to produce powerful blasts of Kinetic force, wind, and even draw up the ground.]

Personality: Genzo is a nice person. He is also a hitman. The dichotomy this causes in him is a defining trait of his, this friendliness which seems to radiate from him even as he seeks to kill you in his detached, mechanical fashion. He does not like to be hurt, and even has a habit of pleading rather ardently for his foes to give up and die quietly. One must then wonder how he might be were killing and other unsavory things part of his trade...
Bio: The details of his early life are somewhat sketchy, though Genzo likes to say that his childhood was "sufficiently traumatic" with that detached smile of his. His insistence upon smiling might hint towards a sadness in his life that he seeks to bury with this face attitude of his. Nonetheless, in his own time he appears to be an amicable person with ambitions only to do his jobs and do them well, making friends and enemies along the way in whatever measure they should come. He seems to enjoy people and tends to try to befriend even those that he is killing, this becoming something of his trademark as he was raised in the ranks of the Lin Kuei. How he joined the gang is equally murky and likely tied to that traumatic past, but he has earned a respectable reputation amongst the Five Families and has come to be known as 'Genzo the Bleeder' for his tendency to return from battles covered in crusted blood...often assumed to be his enemies but more often, is not.

In general, there has been an aimlessness or purposelessness about his actions that speaks to a lack of any real plan for the future. He floats about from one job to the next and lives his life carelessly in between, as though there were nothing more in the world at all to be had. But if this is how he really feels or a face he puts up in lieu of a lack of other options, nobody really knows. One thing is for sure, though...many have their worries about what the young man might do if he were ever to be forced to leave the families...because there really seems to be an absence of other things he genuinely appears to care about. Though if he were, perhaps, to make some friends...

Complete Bloodbath
While many alchemists specialize their studies in certain elements and substances, the type which was always used on and by Genzo focused on blood magic in particular. Having alchemically modified his own blood and changed the properties of the cells within his own body, it has become capable of reproducing, regenerating, spreading, and congealing throughout his body at impossibly-swift rates. This produces the effect of fueling (through immense caloric intake aka binge eating) his body to perform functions at super-human levels such as increased strength, speed, stamina, but with the notable exception to his durability. More importantly, however, this allows for a high-speed clotting of wounds to prevent the possibility of bleeding out...followed by an equally-rapid regeneration that mends wounds as long as his body can provide the fuel to continue the process. Functionally, this can be sped up and enhanced by damage he endures...providing the necessity for his body to work even harder at each necessary function...meaning, in short, that the more Genzo becomes injured the faster he will regenerate, and the faster/stronger he will become. However, this comes with the side-effect of burning through his 'fuel' reserves impossibly fast...meaning that within a few short moments his body will begin feeding on itself, the muscles, the last bits of stored energy within...until he is either eaten up by his power or passes out short of it. His nickname comes from his tendency to allow himself to be injured and covered in blood (which, thanks to his quick-congealing, can be hardened into temporary armor or weapons) before he begins taking a fight seriously...even though he seems to be afraid himself of what he might be capable of if injured too greatly...
[Power/speed increase when ability is in use, and grow exponentially the greater his injuries are. High-speed regeneration and clotting prevent bleeding out and heal wounds in seconds. Stamina/ability to keep fighting decreases as his power increases.]

Personality: Vale is a calm person, one who eschews the bawdy, rowdy nature of the Syndicate's lower ranks and prefers to handle his business on his own. He is quiet and intelligent, skilled and adaptable, always preferring to work alone save when partnered with one person in particular. He is not particularly asocial, but he isn't the type who engage in silly antics. Rather than seeking copious personal pleasures, he prefers to occupy himself in what he considers to be a search for 'meaning'. A person's nature, he might say, is found in their reasons. Doing bad things for a good reason, doing good things for the wrong reason...his search is to find what motivates him. His purpose. And he admires someone like Faye Laforet who fights with all of her strength to protect that purpose, whatever it might be.
Bio: Unlike a large portion of the Syndicates, there was no connection between Vale Lampard and the Amakusu before his induction into their ranks. He was born the son of a soldier, but he never met his father. Before he was born, the man had been sent away into the thick of World War II against his will, as the Japanese Government was enlisting every able-bodied man they could find to push back the American attack. His father died at war...and barely old enough to remember anything, he nonetheless, remembers the news on the day the Americans dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. In the years that followed he couldn't quite remember where he had heard it, what the people had talked about, only the death toll...tens of thousands dead...and a pervasive emptiness that filled him with dread. He grew older with that feeling of empty, aimless confusion characterizing him, and during his youth he was an incredible troublemaker. He simply didn't care what the other children had to say, what the teachers had for him to learn, because the only question he considered worthwhile was to wonder what the purpose of it all was. People in the world died everyday in an instant, without ever knowing why...without ever knowing the reason that they existed...he couldn't help but wonder if those people who had been destroyed by the bomb, those who had slowly been poisoned by the fallout had ever found a reason. He wondered if they ever could have been satisfied with such an unclean and ugly death. He swore that he would not live his life aimlessly...he swore that no matter when the end came to him, he would be ready...he would live his life with a purpose and defend that purpose with his life. ...He would not be a victim...he would not die in vain, and leave the people he cared for to live on in the aftermath and wonder why...

Vale grew older, volunteering his strength as best he could during the country's reconstruction during the late '50s and early '60s. Graduating from high school with moderate marks, he became an officer of the peace before graduating to the rank of detective. He thought that by protecting the cities, the people, and by helping the Japanese people get back on their feet he could help them find their way again...he could give them purpose, and therein find his own. However there was always an absence of contentment with his work, as though something were missing...as though his purpose still lay elsewhere...and his mortality remained ever a constant presence within his mind. His mother died when he was twenty-one, leaving him mostly alone...and his attitude never made him one of the most popular despite his good will and volunteering. He was always alone...until one night, at the age of twenty-four, he found himself in pursuit of a criminal working a job for the Amakusu Syndicate. His determination was great, and no matter how fast or how far the man ran he managed to corner him. In the alley near a pub in the bad side of Oshu City he had the man pinned down, a standoff between them ended by the ringing of a gunshot that tore through the forehead of the criminal and left him in a heap on the blacktop. It was the first time that he had killed anybody on the job, and Vale couldn't help the nausea that filled him. It seemed so senseless that this person had to die, that he had chosen to fire upon him and risk his own death over a job like this one. What was his purpose? Why did he do such a thing? Vale wondered as he walked away from the scene, down to the end of the alley...and the gunshot that rang out in the empty alley and the searing pain in his back were the last things he remembered before the lights went out.

Weeks that followed went by in bits and pieces, flashes of floodlights and white walls and nurses trembling, unsure that he would ever rise again...until beside his bed there stood a man with white hair and golden eyes, who held up to his lips a bottle of what looked like alcohol but tasted much different. "One lifetime is not enough to discover a man's purpose in this world," the man proclaimed, "Accept this gift and live as many lifetimes as you require to find your answer. And when you have, I want you to come and find me...my name is L-" He couldn't remember anything for a while after that, only awakening in the hospital...a miraculous recovery having pulled him through his injuries. He was...different now. He felt invulnerable...and he knew somewhere in the back of his mind that the life he had lead until that moment of awakening was over.

So he abandoned it...and he drifted throughout the country doing whatever seemed necessary. Odd jobs, protection, eventually he even began to dabble in the realm of the criminal...he was no longer the person living the life he thought would give him purpose aimlessly, mired in his discontent. This last endeavor is what lead him to hear of the great Head of the Lin Kuei...a man with the power to cheat death, to cheat aging, a man whose very purpose in life was to find the answers to all of man's questions. Whomever this was, he was not the god that the men proposed him to be...but he was a man who knew, far better than himself, the truth of the world.

Vale joined the Lin Kuei Syndicate in 1985 and began his study of alchemy shortly thereafter, seeking the truth behind the immortality he had discovered inside of him...and the reason for everything that he had lived through and seen until then. Eventually, he awakened within himself a power of his own...and in time, his reputation as a competent and skilled mercenary that walked to the beat of his own drum earned him the right to know of the existence of the Grand Panacea. With one question answered, another still remained...what was his reason? His purpose? Why had he walked the road that he had chosen until now? These are the questions he seeks to answer...and he continues to walk, learn, and study those around him in search of that knowledge...

And life marches on as usual.

St. Elmo's Fire
St. Elmo's Fire involves the sudden and spontaneous combustion of flammable materials (ranging from oxygen to hydrogen to oil and gas) found in the environment or the air, with a sudden burst of heat or friction used as a catalyst to ignite a bright and powerful flame which ranges in color from red to blue to green. This combustion can take place in the air surrounding a person, or even upon them if a certain mark (usually ash or oil at the tip of one of his cigars) is made upon them. In addition, items which may be continuously burning or smoldering (such as a cigar or a lighter) may be used to create manipulable weapons/items of fire for use in combat. Use of this ability is often triggered with a flash in the eyes, a snap of the fingers, or the flicking of a cigar.
[Create spontaneous bursts of powerful and forceful flame in and around the nearby area. When a mark of oil or ash is made upon the body, the flame can ignite a person's clothes or skin where the mark was made and may further engulf them. Bursts may provide force to push or knock back those near the ignition. In addition, a sword, shield, or other weapon of fire may be created using a cigar...though these are not particularly solid and are more for show than practical use.]

Personality: Yura is an absolute sadist, with no moral qualms. She enjoys her job, really enjoys it; and has no trouble in making your life as miserable as possible, before killing you, all the time wearing that wicked smile of hers. She is violent, bloodthirsty, and twisted. There’s nothing she’d love more than to see the worst out of people…more so if it’s a particular someone. Despite it all, Yura is actually calculative, planning the best way to break you No regard is given to her comrades, though…believing they are trash and boot-lickers…if they get on her way, she discards them. Easy as that. . And whatever one may say, she is quite loyal to her boss…whoever that might be.
Bio:Yura’s life before the Lin Kuei is, to put it simply, boring as Hell. She joined the syndicate when she was young, and has enjoyed every minute of it. Perhaps a bit too much. Climbing up ranks among the mooks wasn’t hard, Yura showing her efficiency at her work with her viciousness as she accepted and completed any task given to her, especially if they were the bloody ones. Yura got a reputation of her own, and started working for Jian, the boss’s son. There she met the Sakurazukamori, the outsider that had the old man’s favor. It irked her…he who was so stoic and taciturn, so…meek. She, with a small group confronted him, in an attempt to get rid of him. There was where she realized his true nature. He tore her group to shreds with no effort, he showed his true colors. To say she was interested would have been an understatement.
He disappeared not long after…and Yura continued to serve the Lin Kuei as if nothing had happened. Though, no one can really know what goes inside her head…or if she has other plans now that the Cherry Blossom Killer is back on the picture.

Personality: Aiko has a chronic hero complex, going far out of her way on matters large and small to help others. She simply can't stop herself, and this has had a major impact on her life. Bio: Born to two of the members of the Lin Kuei family, Aiko was taught alchemy from a young age... and, being a kid, it was probably natural that she fixated on television and cartoons. It wasn't long before her learning began to lean in that direction, and she started talking to her parents about the ideas of love. That might have been more interesting, to both them and the family as a whole... if the ongoing gang wars hadn't killed both of her parents shortly afterwards. Aiko was presumed dead in the fire and, not knowing anything about the Lin Kuei, she was ultimately taken in by an orphanage where she started helping all of the other children. She was eventually adopted, but never really stopped helping others, and eventually her alchemy began to bloom in full measure... which was when the Lin Kuei noticed her again. Jian - recognizing that having somebody with a good public reputation could be helpful - quietly ordered his people to leave her alone instead of bringing her into the family. However, they are in contact with her, and Aiko believes them to be a secret organization that occasionally gives her missions for the greater good... and money for the orphanage, even when she travels around.
