YOUNG GIRL

User Image

Name: Xilin Lei
Color: #C13626 █████ (Ladybug)-- Let me know if it's too close to an existing color.
Age: 14
Nationality: Chinese
Home/Financial Status: Her single mother makes enough to send Xilin and her brother to school, while living in a moderately small house.
School: Rosaline Academy

Personality: She feels a strong need to be protective of others, always willing to put herself in danger for those that she loves and those that may be weaker than her. She will always fight for what she believes in, and she is a strong believer in everyone being treated fairly. If anyone threatens her, or someone around her, Xilin will step up and interfere without regards to her own safety. Sometimes, this ends with her being beaten and ostracized, but not stepping up for what is right is a worse crime, in her book. Xilin just wants everyone to get along, and for no one to have to get hurt.

She would rather talk out her problems, rather than combat because she is physically weak. Xilin secretly wishes she was bigger and stronger than she actually is, so she won't be scared to take anyone on. Usually, she is only defending herself. Her mother prevents her from working out in order to get stronger because of her traditional beliefs that girls should be dainty and only boys should be rowdy and get into fights. Xilin really loves her mother, and therefore, respects her wishes, however, she can't ignore her own feelings and let injustice slide past her. So, she is forced to hide this side of her from her mother.

Her family and friends are very important to her, and she tries to make time for them between her hectic school schedule. Xilin wants to be a part of everything and try everything, but she is starting to learn that she is only one person, and can't do everything all at once. Her schedule consists of daily violin lessons after school, ballet classes in the evening, tutoring her little brother whenever he needs the extra help, assisting her mother with making dinner, and chores round the house.

She is a very ambitious girl. She won't let any obstacle stand in the way of her goals. If sometimes doesn't go her way, she's flexible enough in her thinking to look for other ways in order to achieve what she wants. Xilin has learned not to take everything too personally, which helps her bounce back quickly from rejection, or failure.

Her aspirations are to become a well-known solo violinist, and she takes her lessons very seriously. She started playing violin at age 5, by her mother's request, but she found that she really likes it. Xilin can often be found playing well into the night, so her mother has given her the basement room for some peace and quiet. One day, she wants to take up martial arts lessons, as well, but she is afraid her mother may disapprove of "girls fighting," so she hasn't brought this up yet.

Appearance: Xilin has a delicate build and looks like she will be blown over with a strong wind. She is naturally skinny and lacks womanly curves. It doesn't bother her, but she will get angry if made fun of for having a boy's body.

She has long, black hair that comes down to the middle of her back that she usually keeps up in a ponytail, with bangs that frame her round face. Her skin is pale, which is a sign of beauty in her culture. Her mother will throw a fit if Xilin leaves the house without a light coat, even on the hottest of days.

History: Xilin's family is doing okay financially because their extended family is really closely knit. She has wealthy uncles and aunts who wouldn't even think twice about lending her family money, or extending a helping hand to her single mother. They have helped her mother tremendously and on top of lending them starting money when their father left, they gave her a high paying job so she would be able to support her children easily by herself. When she had made enough to pay them back, they wouldn't accept it.

Xilin was placed in Rosaline Academy by her mother, who thinks it would be best for her to focus on her studies and not be distracted by boys. Her mother is one who would believe Xilin should not date until after she is married, neglecting the fact that it would make zero sense. The girl is not naturally smart, but she is very studious.

Having her father leave at such a young age has been very hard on Xilin and her family, but they have gotten to understand that family extends beyond only their immediate family. Being the oldest child in a single parent household, Xilin is expected to take on a lot more responsibility than others of her age. She has been forced to grow up and help out with what her mother cannot do herself, instead of going out to play with other teenagers.

Family: Xilin lives with her mother, Chunhua Lei, 42, who has extremely traditional Chinese beliefs and is deeply religious. She strives to make sure Xilin grows up respecting her elders, and being a girly girl. She also loves telling stories of their family history, though some may be elaborated a little, the most prevalent being how their family is distantly related to emperors of ancient times. Chunhua works at her brother's computer hardware firm, assisting in sales and repair of computer parts.

Little is known about Xilin's father, Jianyu Lei, 45, as he left when she was 3. Her mother refuses to talk about him besides saying he was a good man, and that he was doing what he thought was right. This leaves Xilin with a lot of questions, which makes her angry, especially the part about him doing what he thinks is right. How can leaving their family behind ever be the right thing to do?

Xilin has one younger brother, Yingjie Lei, 12, who attends Teufel Town Middle School. Their mother has higher hopes for Yingjie than Xilin, but not because he is smarter than his older sister. Traditionally, males are more valuable than females because they are physically stronger and capable of carrying the family name. This doesn't bother Xilin too much, as it gives her more freedom to be who she wants to be because her mother isn't always doting on her, trying to make her life decisions for her. He doesn't have the ambition that Xilin does because to him, it seems like nothing he does is ever good enough for his mother. She wants him to be the best at everything, so she can brag about her only son in front of her friends. Xilin can see that her brother does try, and feels bad that he is expected to do so much, so she tries to help him succeed as well.

PUELLA MAGI

Language: Chinese

Desires: Xilin wants her physical strength to match her mental strength, so she can protect others.

Emblem: Shield

Weapon: Ji (Chinese Halberd)-- My sketch. Xilin's ji has a crescent blade attached to the side, set with rubies. The head of the ji is bound with red horsehair. The other end has a metal counter balance.

Type of Magic: Xilin's offensive magic can pierce opponents with light. She can also yield protective magic in the form of temporary invisible force fields, but this can only be used to protect someone else because of the wording of her wish. When transformed, her physical strength is enhanced, as well.

Outfit: She wears traditionally Chinese influenced garb, based on this character. If possible, modernize it and take artistic freedom with it.

The personality and appearance are very solid, her eye/emblem color is beautiful! The only thing I'm curious about are a few factors in her history:

- Why was the leave so abrupt? What led up to the feud or her father wishing to leave?
- Any reason why her family is so traditionalist? What does Xilin feel about this-- does she feel stress from having to fill those roles? If so, how does she cope with them?
- There is a lot about her family in general, or very broadly, but what did she do throughout her life? Just fleshing out what significant things happened other than her parents' separation might be good.
- Why the need to protect others? Does her need to stand up stem from something? How does that match up with what seems to be extreme political pressures, where girls expected to be more passive?
- You mention she wants to fight for what she believes in. What does she believe in?
