~The Confinement Chamber and Yatagarasu Training Facility~

Located in a secret underground tower that descends for nearly one-thousand levels beneath the center of the nation's capital, the Confinement Chamber is the most important location for the secretive Yatagarasu Organization in the entire country. Here is where the greatest of their foes are sealed within a facility only accessible through a long, difficult, and secretive ritual that only the strongest of their servants, the Kuzunoha, can properly perform. Within are sealed many immensely powerful demons against which the summoners of the Crows can train or with whom they can barter (and if they are lucky, perhaps winning their loyalty in battle); amongst those sealed are the Star of Death Mikaboshi on the 666th Floor, the Vault of Asgard on the 777th Floor, and the Guardian of the Capital himself, the Great Lord Masakado, on the 999th Floor. Tapping into the great vein of power beneath the capital, it draws from an impossibly large well of supernatural strength to seal in these devils.

Nearby, not far from the Tower, is a small shrine with no real distinguishing features that is rarely visited and poorly tended from the outside, but within lay a secret...the main training grounds for the best of the best amongst the Yatagarasu, a place where those who will bear the name of Kuzunoha train and test themselves one last time in order to claim the title that shall be rightfully theirs. Here is the only location where one of the summoners can go to deliver any sort of message to the very highest of the high amongst their shadowed brotherhood...but even so, they must go through the hands of the mysterious herald.

[Note: This location cannot be visited by any others save the Yatagarasu Members outside of a storyline!]

Mir

A lone girl stood on the very first floor of the Confinement Chambers, a watch in one hand frozen on the very moment of midnight. Well, to be more exact, it was frozen between midnight and the next moment. In her other hand was a scroll, detailing her orders and instructions. The spirits of the Yatagarasu were... worried. They were always at least moderately concerned about protecting Japan, yes, but the recent series of threats had rattled them rather badly. Enough, in fact, to reverse one of their earlier decisions about sealing and give her new instructions on that matter. Even as Mir thought back to the conversation they'd had, and the ominous voice of the deity they served...

"Much was expected of you, Raidou Kuzunoha the XIX. You have performed your services to the country well... but we continue to have grave concerns for the future."

"...What do you need, my lord?"

"For too long, the Four Great Summoners have only been three, and it is our great shame that one of your number fell so low as to betray all that he swore to protect."

"...You want me to select a new Kuzunoha?"

"No. We wish for you to become a new Kuzunoha. Much is expected of you, Raidou Kuzunoha the XIX. Yet much is asked, as well. Never before have we permitted the ones who bear your name to have access to all of our secrets, and to study the most ancient arts."

"...I have worked all my life to be worthy of the title I bear. You are right. Asking me to give it up is asking quite a lot."

"We would not do so if we did not believe it was necessary. There are many, including your fellow Kuzunoha Geirin, who will likely see it as a demotion and an indicator that we have lost faith in you. This is not true. Especially after the betrayal of the previous Ichirou Kuzunoha, we would not offer this information to anyone we did not completely trust. You were never skillful because you bore the name Raidou... you have held the name because of your skill. We require someone we can completely trust to fill this role, and there are none with the same expertise as you that can be asked to fill this position. We need four Great Summoners, not three. Raidou Kuzunoha the XIX. Should you accept, you will be the first Kuzunoha to ever hold all of the secrets and the knowledge of two lines of our Summoners... and the line shall be named anew, for the sins of the previous holder are too great to be forgiven."

"..."

"Much has always been expected of you. If you accept our invitation, then raise your voice and speak your true name, not the name of your past."

Raidou exhaled slightly. Still, it wasn't hard for her to remember the reason why she'd worked so hard, and become the person she was today. Like many of the Yatagarasu, she had always admired the actions of the Fourteenth to bear the name of Raidou. His actions were beyond legendary, and the fulfillment of everything that a protector of Japan was supposed to be. She wanted to be like him. She wanted to surpass him, and in the end, she had achieved the same name as he. Names had a special sort of importance, and having worked all her life for this one... to give it up wasn't an easy thing to do. Being Raidou was everything to her - she'd sacrificed no small amount of personal happiness as part of her efforts to protect Japan. She'd made difficult decisions, and she'd constantly thrown herself into battle against nightmarish foes, for the sake of every innocent life and the ideals of the organization she served. The Yatagarasu, the divine messenger of the goddess Amaterasu, ruler of the plains of Heaven and ancestor of the imperial lineage of Japan. The organization itself was, more-or-less, the will of the gods who loved the world the most... and the spirit of the Yatagarasu was ultimately a messenger for their true founder. A request like this one was a serious change, a serious offer... and that meant it had to have come from the very top: the goddess herself. As usual, the spirit of the Yatagarasu was right - there were many who might see this offer as a demotion or a punishment. Anyone who truly believed that was missing the point, though - and she wasn't a Kuzunoha for the sake of gaining the approval of people like that. Their thoughts meant nothing... all that mattered was what she wanted to do, and THAT point was crystal clear.

She wanted to protect the world, and help humanity survive against its greatest threats. To be a light, eternally shining to keep the darkness at bay. To inspire others, to teach and raise them, and to risk herself against the greatest foes so others didn't have to.

"My name... is Mir Teiwaz Artonelico. I am the protector of Japan who holds both knowledge and power, Ciela Kuzunoha the I."

"Much is expected of you, Ciela Kuzunoha the I. And much is given, as well."

Three of Mir's tubes flashed brightly as the ominous voice continued.

"These are our gifts to you. Soma, Violent Goddess of Catastrophe, who balances the world through Natural Selection. Filament, Goddess of Death and Poverty, who provides balance for the preservation of the world. Suzunomiya, Goddess of Song and Creation, who watches over the physical realm. These three goddesses shall be your companions on your assignments."

"What is my new mission?"

"We charge you with studying the knowledge of your line. Uncover the knowledge to protect Japan, and put it into action. We charge you with strengthening our forces; use the knowledge you have acquired to teach the other Summoners. We will trust your judgment and discretion in this matter. Allow all but the most serious matters to be dealt with by others. We charge you with retrieving the deity you once sealed within our Confinement Chambers; it has remembered the ancient pacts, and will be of use to you. Finally, as you had no true apprentice before, we charge you with selecting a new summoner to bear the name of Raidou Kuzunoha."

"As you command."

"There is still some time. Make your choice wisely. Much is expected of you, Ciela Kuzunoha the I. Yet... do not forget our gratitude, for you have indeed given much on our behalf. This meeting is concluded."

And that had been that... though Mir had decided to use her real name, not just the new title she possessed. Dive too deeply into another identity and you actually became that person - and she didn't want to forget what she'd done... and why. Now, however, it was time to fulfill one of her charges, and go to awaken that one once more. Best to get it done with, then see how the training of the others was coming along. Geirin ought to be done fairly soon, and a report ought to help her decide if one of them was right... or if someone else entirely deserved the name.

Mir

Mir quietly looked down at her arm, carefully examining the familiar shape of the claws that had formed over her skin. It was odd, in many ways... at heart, she was a summoner, calling up the powers of spirits in order to have an effect on the world, yet here she was, once more taking an entity within her body and summoning its power in a completely separate way from how Summoners normally were. Still, did the form really matter that much? Achieving the goals was a bit more important than the exact methods used, and it wasn't as if she'd ever stopped Summoning normally. That was still the bulk of what she did, and she calmly touched one finger to the mark on her (rather exposed) chest, pulling a very special Tube out of it. With the added knowledge of the fourth line of the Kuzunoha, she now possessed two invaluable techniques - and it would be a much better world if none of them were needed, but at the rate things were going, there might not have been much of a choice. She flicked her hair over her shoulder, then allowed the intoxicating power to vanish, as her clothes reformed once more. This was one of the tasks done, and it was time to see about the next. That little boy of Kyouji's had talent, but already seemed to be called for, so he was out of the question. Asuka might do well someday, but she needed a much greater degree of experience before she could be considered qualified... and Eoria would have been fantastic if she'd just been able to concentrate... hmm.

Quite calmly, Mir stepped onto a lift, leaving the desolate and empty chamber behind her. The lights began to flash by as she went upwards, each one indicating a floor sealing items and entities of almost incalculable power. On and on they went, never seeming to change - there were just about a thousand floors, after all, and it could take awhile to move past them all even when going at high speeds. Her thoughts turned inward once again, thoughts focused on the future. They were calling up the clans, and many warriors from everywhere they could reach. It had been effectively open-season on many targets, and now this establishment of an entirely new line... yeah, they were pretty worried about the future, weren't they? Still, the Yatagarasu existed to protect the people of the land, and they would use whichever means they decided were necessary in pursuit of that. It wasn't always an easy choice, and they always mourned any sacrifices that had to be made, but... There is far too much at stake for losing to be an option. Maybe it's time I returned to the village... Something had to be done, anyway. She didn't want to have to use some of the final options that the Yatagarasu possessed. Past a certain point, there was simply no turning back... it was better to solve problems before such drastic measures became necessary.

Ever so slowly, the lift she was riding on slowed, until she finally reached the very top of the Confinement Chambers. Mir calmly strode out, heading on towards the next task that had been placed on her shoulders.
