stressed I'm just starting the vending game, and I only have about 600k, so what should I start investing with?

I think it depends on you yourself, really. Are you willing to invest in REIs? Are you willing to invest in RIGs? Would you rather go for cash shop items/bundles?
Around 550k, you might have a limited set of choices. With that amount, you can pretty much get one Lady Jayne (REI) or a couple of Digital Rainbow singles (since you won't be able to afford the bundles). Whichever that floats your boat.
Or you can browse through the MP, check out items that are selling around more than 10 daily and try to invest in those. This requires a study on the graphs. Which is a must.

Nows a good time to start thinking about investing in/hoarding July 2012 Sealed Monthly Collectible Letters if thats your thing.
If not try vending if thats you thing.
Otherwise,550k is not much to play with, try browsing the Gaia Exchange and investing your gold into as many items as you can.
For example buying...say, 5 skinny trendy skinny jeans for like 100k each will give you about 75k-100k in profit.
The chances of you finding and investing in only one item in the exchange or in the vend worth 550k or less is not likely to bring you 75k-100k in profit.
Just buy easy to sell items and invest your gold on several items, not just one so you can increase your funds more effectivly.
Typically when exchangeing I find a reasonable profit range to be:
For items 1-100k look for about 10-15k in profit
For items 100-200k look for a 15-25k profit.
200-300k profit 25k-35k
300-400k profit 35-45k
400-500k profit 45-55k
and so on....
It may not seem like much, but exchangers will be more likely to sell you there items if your reasonable. Dont waiste your time trying to lowball exchangers. In the time you waiste you could be profiting.
Time is money afterall.
