Legend says that the Shadowlurkers originated from the first fearful scream of mankind. Logic dictates they should not exist at all. Magic states that they are a race of darkness, perhaps cursed by a unique evil.
However the Shadowlurkers began, they have lain low, watching the other races from the safety of their shadows.
Before forming an "organized" government, the Shadowlurkers ran wildly around the world, frightening its inhabitants in an attempt to find the darkest shadow, the ultimate darkness the world had to offer. As time passed and no such shadow was found, the Shadowlurkers began to evolve.
Some take this shadow hunt very seriously, and have interpreted their desire for darkness as a desire for evil. These Shadowlurkers are the stuff of nightmares. They are unafraid to steal, murder, and otherwise harm other races in their quest to join the deepest blackness in the universe.
Others believe that the desire for darkness is a mere desire for solitude, and spend their days in the Shadow Realm. Such Shadowlurkers are often favorites of the King, unbiased by the ways of other races. These in particular are prone to skewed moral compasses due to their lack of interaction with others.
A select few have found the side effects of their shadow-hunting more fun than the hunt itself. These are the Shadowlurkers mothers warn children about, the bumps in the night and the figures in the closets. They stay just out of sight, waiting for the right moment to let something be seen, the best moment to get the highest reaction out of their target.
The King of the Shadowlurkers rules over all the different Shadowlurkers, ordering them around to accomplish goals known only to himself. Whether they are malevolent or benign remains to be seen.
But as long as they exist, someone will always be right to fear the dark.
