Bio: Nightpaw was born to two Recognized Lifemates, Roughbite and Bloombush. Of course, her parents did not Recognize for several turns of the seasons being only lovemates through thick and thin. They Recognized when Roughbite was jolted off of his wolf during the Hunt and Bloombush, unable to leave him behind, turned back to save him from the running branch-horns. When their eyes met, as Bloombush pulled him up onto her wolf, they could not help but know each other's soul names and know each other like they hadn't before - connected.

Roughbite and Bloombush's Recognition gave them twin cubs, Tearfall and Dreamtop. Their beginnings were like any other cubs; playing around the Holt, roughhousing, and wanting ever-so-desperately to go on the Hunt with their parents. But, the twins changed after they lost their parents to a magic-stricken beast that the whole tribe had to work hard (and lose many) to take down. Tearfall and Dreamtop were old enough to fight...and see their beloved parent's death at the creature. Dreamtop still had her head in the cloud's (like she always was as a cub), but her innocent dreaming changed to lost, unfocused thought as she often went to stare out at the Vastdeep Waters on the shore. Tearfall, whose name was meant to be one of elation, morphed into a sad, almost depressed meaning and now reflected pain and suffering. Seeing the two females as changed from these names, the Council decided to rename the girls....Dreamtop was now Brushtide and Tearfall was Nightpaw.

The twins were closer than ever after their name changes, completely feeling the loss of their parents in it, but knowing their soul's name would carry them on in spirit. Brushtide spent much of her time, when she wasn't busy with tribal duties, looking out to the vast waters...lost in her thoughts and self. She always spoke to Nightpaw of memories they shared from when they were cubs and Nightpaw knew her twin sister was slipping far in her mourning. During the following Storm Season, the Great Waves plagued the Holt from the Vastdeep Waters; oftentimes, many dared not brave the shore during the storm, but Brushtide did - especially her great loss. Nightpaw knew this storm would be one of the worst the Holt had seen, so she went after her sister to shield her, but was only in time to see Brushtide swept away by the tide. Nightpaw thought that it was appropriate, considering she seemed to truly want to be "lost" at sea.
Nightpaw was very thankful after losing her sister to not have the name Tearfall anymore; however, she felt peace because she knew her sister did not, and was not able to, live in "the now" of wolf-thought. Brushtide would always be lost in her grieving of Roughbite and Bloombush.

The bond that Nightpaw shared with her bond-wolf, Goldberry, strengthened in the passing time after the incident and she would always take runs through the trees or open plains with him. She loved the nature around her and seemed to connect with every living thing's soul...that was how her plant-shaping ability presented itself as she lazily talked to small branch one day, touched it with her finger, and watched it grow slightly beneath her touch. Nightpaw became multifariously calm after that, however, never rejecting the thrill of the Hunt and its violence; but, also respecting it all the more.

Goldberry got hurt when a group of wandering five-fingered ones (humans) got frightened and attacked passing wolves...knowing them to be friends with the four-fingered 'demons'. The Wolfriders chased them off, but Nightpaw could NOT lose another she cared about so soon. She held her wolf-friend, wishing and praying to the High Ones that they not take him from her yet...not after all she had lost. Although healing is lesser when used on animals, the frantic gesture to save Goldberry manifested Nightpaw's healing ability...and it worked!

Nightpaw tries not to let grief or unrest get to her if she can help it, so she faces situations and conversation with levelheaded opinions. She is a big fan of dreamberries and dreamberry wine, savoring the intoxicating affect they have on her elfin body. She also loves to dance, showing her emotion in expressive movement. She tried to live in the now of wolf-though and "the Way" for her sister and because all of her family would have wanted her to live, but she got captured by the five-fingered ones and instead of killing her...they sold her into slavery instead..

Nightpaw is pretty submissive, unless her master wants her to be rough. She tends gardens well, especially because of her plant-shaping ability. She can also hunt, heal, and entertain with dance at her master's request/delight.

Bio: Her parent's Recognized at a young age, and had one child out of Recognition; Curlsmile. She was a happy cub and oftentimes spent her time playing with other cubs, watching her father fish, or learning little tanning skills from her mother. Of course, happy times do not often last forever.

Curlsmile's mother ended up getting captured by the five-fingered ones, who looked at her people as 'demons' mostly, and Joybloom died atop their sacrificial altar which they assumed would save them from the 'tree spirits'. It was around this same time that Curlsmile, unknowing of what was happening to her mother (until her point of death), was wolf-bonding with her wolf-friend Sagesong. Curlsmile was inbetween on the loss of her mother and her new friend. Rivercatch's emotions went another direction.

The loss of his long-time Lifemate and other half he became catatonic - choosing to go to the Palace of the High Ones and having the Preservers wrap him in their 'Wrapstuff", which was like a spider's cocoon, to enter an endless sleep. Of course, his ability to communicate through Sending was still possible through his sleep and the shell that encased him. Curlsmile's Sending ability began to grow through communication with her father; however, the fact that she grew so powerful - leading to the manifestation of Astral Projection and Deep-Sensing - Timmain (last of the High Ones) became her mentor and changed her name to Airwhisper.

Taking time away from her duties, with the Council's excited agreement, she trained with Timmain and began to get a handle on her astral projecting. Airwhisper enjoyed the thrill of connecting with others of her kind, from afar, and the release it was to "go out". But, new abilities like her Levitation and Water Control developed as well and she has had a hard time grasping the difficulty of either ability - despite Timmain's guidance.

She has now gained control over part of her Deep-Sense ability, but only with recent memories. She is trying to control grasping more repressed ones, but besides working on her skills, she tends to her duties and sings to entertain the cubs and other elves. Airwhisper isn't often troubled because she has always lived for "The Way".

Timmain asked Airwhisper to go with Sagesong to learn from the magic users of the five-fingered ones, but Airwhisper went with much reluctance (and fear) because of what her family had gone through; however, she did not want to upset her mentor. Airwhisper was captured a few villages away from her forests, seeing that those of her tribe stayed away from them, because of her race and they thought she would fetch a price for her uniqueness. Sagesong always staying in near proximity, despite her need and want to help her elf-friend, Airwhisper kept her away from the danger.

Airwhisper's first master was a kind old man who instructed her in piano and even gave her voice lessons to strengthen her already strong talent. Despite her protests of cooking meat, he also taught her to cook and supported/cherished her powers and stories of home. He was lonely, however, with not many - living - friends left and it was this reason that caused his greedy son to kill him. The son feared Airwhisper and her power, beating her and placing an ability dampening bracelet on her before he sold her back into slavery and onto the next master responsible for her.

The Elfin Lovelife

Low Birth Rate

The elves pay for their incredible life-span with a very low birth rate. For a female elf to bear more then one cub in her lifetime is remarkable.Twins are almost as rare. It is not known whether other elf pregnancies fail to come to term or whether conception itself is difficult However, elves have an instinctive method called Recognition, of ensuring the birth of exceptional children. Only the Go-Backs have managed to find a way around the need for Recognition, and it is known that healers may overcome the boundaries to magically force a conception.

Recognition

Recognition is an instinct built into the elf's genetic pattern. It occurs when two elves whose genes would combine to make good, viable offspring come in contact with each other. Elves attempting at times to rise above this biological imperative often become very ill. If a member of a Recognized pair has a soul name the other will instantly know it, even if she or he is not normally corresponding telepathically. Recognition is such an ingrained part of the elves psyche that most couples try to make their relationships grow into love. Recognition has been known to disrupt out-of-recognition lovematings of several centuries. Other lifemate relationships survive recognitions, and even expand to include the newly recognized member.

Recognition has been described as "Two bodies with one soul" recognized mates share a perpetual empathic bond each feeling the emotions of the other at least peripherally. The loss of a recognized mate often causes suicidal frenzy's and near catatonia.

It is possible for elves to recognize more then one mate in their life. The subjective reactions of recognized elves to the loss of their mate would make second recognition's unlikely within several centuries of the loss. Most elves lives are either to short or too secure to have the possibility of another recognized mate.

Also as elves grow older the chance of them recognizing any particular other elf increases. The genetic sensors within their bodies lose discrimination as they age so that especially in close knit elf groups without outside contact, elves who have known each other for centuries might suddenly find themselves recognized.

Similarly an elf who has lived many centuries with one tribe without recognizing has an excellent chance of recognizing the first unrecognized elf of the other sex from a strange tribe he sees, simply because the genetic monitors are by then desperate for a matching gene set.


Children

Whether the result of Recognition or not, children are considered very precious. Pregnancies last 6 months, though there is little discomfort and the mother does not begin to 'show' until the second half of the pregnancy. Most elfin births are not difficult : "cubs were small at first and very delicate ... " (BA3) Cubs are neither coddled nor spoiled.


Lifemating

- are two or more elves that have completely committed themselves to eachother. It is a long term bond - none has been witnessed broken by anything but death. While lifemating is akin to marriage, it does not necessarily entail monogamy, lifemates occasionally include others in their joining. (Same sex pairings possible, Recognition necessary)

Lovemating

- are two or more elves who partner for reasons of pleasure or committed themselves to eachother without Recognition, both mental and physical. It is more a casual relationship and its concept is closer to dating or living together than marriage. Like lifemating, lovemating can encompass same sex pairings.

Anti-Healing

Prerequisite Power: Healing

This is the antithesis of healing. Any Healer can do Anti-Healing, and only healers may use this power. The power works much the same as healing except that the one it is used on is hurt instead of healed. Anti-Healing can also be used to put a target into a trance. This trance can be renewed from a distance if the anti-healer is a powerful enough sender. Only a healer using mental healing techniques can bring the target out of this trance.


Animal Bonding

This power is only useful on intelligence animals. This is a power possessed by many elves in some degree. It is an empathic ability to find an animal that the elf will be able to maintain an empathic bond with permanently. This bond will allow the elf to communicate his emotions and simple thoughts to the other. The elf can also use the power to bring thoughts out of the mind of the other animal. No elf may bond with more than one animal at a time and the bond is irrevocable for the lifetime of either member of the bond, though it rarely results in suicide. The elves are too pragmatic and the animals too unintelligent to pine away and die. Due to their heritage Wolfriders have a stronger bond with wolves with some touch of elf blood in them.

Finding (Dowsing)

This power allows the user to attempt to find anything he is familiar with and needs with in a localized area. Most elves with this power specialize with it. Plains Elves most likely would use it to find water. However it can be used to find anything the user is familiar with. Types of rocks, a lost friend or ornament, ect. The user will not know exactly where the item is but will have a general direction and know when they are getting closer to what they seek.

Homing Instinct

Prerequisite Power: Finding (Selective; PM if you want ability)

Sea elf homing instincts is less sophisticated version of the instinct which allows preservers to always locate the palace. Sea Elves with this power can find there way through the ocean waters to there home island. This power works best at night when the elf can use stars as navigational guides.

Levitation

This power lifts oneself or another person, creature or object by force of mind. Among the Gliders it is called Gliding though it does not include ridding air currants. This power is used Telekinetically. A beginning practitioner must concentrate to keep themselves or the object in the air.

Magic-Feeling*

Most elves are born with the power to sense that a nearby object or place has magical properties or has been created with magic, or that it was the site of great users of magic.

Plant-Shaping

This power manipulates plants to shape them to the users needs. The actual process involves delving deep into the life process of the plants and directing their growth. With this power an elf can cause a seed to sprout and grow almost instantly as long as the water and nutrients to sustain it are available. The elf can also with much effort change the nature of a plant. For example making it bear fruit all year. Plant-Shapers can also manipulate dead wood.

Rock-Shaping

Rock-Shaping is like Plant-shaping and is a rare talent. It never appeared among the Wolfriders probably because they never had need of it. A rock-shaper can detect anomalies in rock, such as a secret door or tunnel wall.

Sending*

This is the ability to telepathically send and receive messages over a distance. A sender may send his message broadcast to all other senders within range or privately to one individual. Very few elves can overhear a lock or private send. Sending can be used for psychic combat as well. Elf Protocol dictates that the winner of such conflict has carried his point and the loser will generally accede to the winners wishes in all maters pertaining to the initial conflict. Only truth can be told through Sending and most elves are born with this ability.

Shielding

Prerequisite Power: Healing

A healer may, be touching a willing target to initiate this power, which allows them to resist an attack via sending, Anti-Healing or any other hostel attacks from magical powers. This can be used for more then one target mind but it is more taxing.

StormSeeing

Stormseers have special sensitivity to the look and feel and scent of the sea, sky clouds and wind, allowing them to predict future weather. The Stormseer can determine the strength and duration of upcoming storms. This power will not predict earthquakes, eruptions or Great Waves.

Water Control

Water control is a rare power, it enables an elf to direct the flow of a stream of water and the volume of water in it. This power can be used to divert streams, bail boats, or keep water from leaking into a damage boat.

Airwhisper now continues to work on controlling her ability, but at the Holt, because she can "go out" and meet Timmain; although, Airwhisper goes to visit the Palace a lot because her father is wrapped there. She has now gained control over part of her Deep-Sense ability, but only with recent memories. She is trying to control grasping more repressed ones, but besides working on her skills, she tends to her tribal duties and sings to entertain the cubs and other elves. Airwhisper isn't often troubled because she has always lived for "The Way".
