User ImageShe still ached. Kayleena shuffled wearily to the outside of the cave that had been her home most recently. Since the surprise attack from the leader of the Mahapadma, Samsara, the little usdia had been keeping a low profile. The wound on her back seemed to be healing without any help. Phantom pains still plagued her. As bad as she was though it didn't compare to the mauling that Daimhin had received. Kayleena had been appalled at the damage inflicted on the stallion when he took the blunt of Samsara's attack.

It wouldn't do good to wallow though. Lately Kayleena had been trying to forage her own little meals here and there interspersed with hunting for anything that she could possible use to help Daimhin. It seemed odd: the "captive" aiding the "captor" but Kayleena merely saw it as repaying a debt. Daimhin had in effect saved her life and she owed him something in return. Unswerving loyalty might be going a little too far but she wasn't just going to desert him; not now.

Picking her way gingerly back to the cave Kayleena grasped the ends of a piece of fabric in her mouth. The irony was not lost on the mare as she dropped the bundle just inside the cave. She'd taken to using the scrap of fabric that once was her blindfold to ferry bunches of grass back to the cave. At least in this manner she had a say in what she wanted to eat. She was always careful in her trips though; never straying too far out of sight. Samsara might have dismissed her after their initial encounter but she could not say that the others of the Mahapadma would still like to sharpen their cruelty upon her.

It was a strange rustling sound that met her on her next trip out. Kayleena froze at the mouth of the cave as a wet snuffling accompanied the sound of movement. Something seemed to be just outside and perilously close to her hidden stash of grasses. The sound seemed to intensify as the cave walls caught and trapped the noises. Kayleena pricked her ears forward. Her main goal was to either rescue her stash from the prowler or scare it away entirely.

Placing one hoof in front of the other Kayleena slowly crept to the mouth of the cave. Her eyes widened at what she saw. It was not at all what she would have expected. Slowly she took in the sight. A rather pink bear seemed to have found her hidden stash and was eagerly mowing down on the nutrient rich shoots. The hours of painstakingly searching for that meal had Kayleena frowning in dismay. What could she do?

The bear on the other hand seemed lost in it's own meal. It did not notice the usdia mare looking down upon it. It was too occupied with filling the void in it's stomach.

Kayleena continued to watch in silence. She couldn't believe this creature. It came along and had raided her food stash. Why couldn't it find its own food source? Huffing silently Kayleena debated her options. She could try to chase the bear off but what happened if it turned and tried to attack her? There was also the option of doing nothing but that means all her food would be gone. She would have to venture further out in an attempt to forage more for herself.

There was also that elusive option to try to compromise with the creature. Maybe explain what she needed that food for. Kayleena shuffled awkwardly on her feet. A loose stone tumbled down the path and Kayleena froze as the bear's head came up and locked it's gaze on her. 'Uh-oh.'

The sound of a stone moving caught it's attention. The bear stopped snuffling the cache of food and swiftly locked it's gaze on the smallish figure at the top of the hill. What was this? A low growl was emitted as it took in the source of it's interrupted meal.

The bear's gaze never wavered in its focus. Kayleena almost swore to herself that she could make out a tiny reflection in the bear's black eyes. She gave a nervous sounding gulp. Her blindfold lay at the creature's paws. There was still some shoots of grass poking through the fabric and Kayleena wilted a little. There was absolutely no way that she would be able to fight the creature off while she was still in the process of healing. Leaving it alone would have been the wisest choice but the little mare remembered something.

Before Daimhin had come and changed her life she had watched other Soquili befriend the native species of the land. Perhaps there was a chance that she could do something along those lines here. The usdia gave a soft sigh. Could she make this work? Could she be strong enough to not doubt her next choice? Taking a careful step backwards the usdia cleared her throat. Once again she felt the bear's gaze settle on her. "I will not stop you. You obviously need this food more than I do. Take it in good faith."

The bear cocked its head at the words. The creature had observed the lessening tension in the figure before gently picking the bundle off the ground and marching off with it. It was a little strange that there wasn't any confrontation over what seemed to be a missed meal. It gave quiet pause to a strange thought before resuming it's course away from the cave. Maybe it'd come back.

She'd come back to the cave. The pink bear had felt something pinch at her emotions when she'd walked off with the fabric wrapped grasses. The little figure that she had seen hadn't even tried to stop her and she was curious as to what it meant. Today she was bringing the fabric back to the general area of the cave. She gave a soft grunting sound as she clambered up the rocks before releasing her bundle. The fabric had been bunched up and now opened to reveal a small cache of berries and grasses. She couldn't exactly be sure but she believed everything was edible. Without another sound she disappeared off the rocks.

Kayleena had been keeping Daimhin company. He wasn't any worse for wear but it didn't seem as if he was getting any better. It worried Kayleena. How long should wounds take to heal? It was true that they had been a little more extreme than hers. She'd only received the one attack from Samsara before managing to flee right into Svanbjorn ... and he hadn't hurt her. Shaking her mane out she gave a soft sigh before noticing the dim light coming from the entrance of the cave. She stood and made her way to sit outside and enjoy the sunlight. As she made her exit her gaze narrowed on a lumbering form way off in the distance. She shook her head. It was no use worrying about whom or what it was. She wasn't going to take anything to chance unless she was at least one-hundred percent feeling better.

She lay down and began to close her eyes when she caught sight of a familiar dirty-white cloth. The scent of berries registered a minute later and Kayleena made the motion of standing up to examine what she realized was her blindfold. A heap of berries and grass lay on top of it and she gave a soft chuckle before selecting one of the berries to sample. That bear had obviously come back ... and had left a gift for Kayleena. Was this the start of something beautiful? Could she have made a friend in this hostile land?
