Painted Moose Añuli drank steadily from the crisp water before her, vastly unaware of the moon bathing her in a eerie glow. Passing creatures gave her a wide birth, pausing only to watch her long enough to make sure she was still there. Not that she minded. To her, all she was just herself, and maybe…playing a game with Ekwueme. It was so fun! The game was her own perverted twist on Hide-and-go-seek, with her spin being that she had been away from his side for a whole day. The best part? He didn’t wasn’t even aware he was playing. She giggled lightly, lapping at the cool water, ever unaware of the moon…and what was lurking just beneath the grasses at her back. moineau bavarde "Añuli!" Ekwueme called, his voice long gone hoarse. Damn. Where could she be? The space by his side had still been warm when he awoke, how could she have gotten such a big lead? He had thought he was better at tracking her down than this, but she had learned a few tricks... like going through streams. Damn. He stumbled through a bush, the branches scratching his face and pulling at his coat, and glanced around wildly. Dusty, bloody, and desperate, he looked nothing short of a mad man. He was beginning to feel like one. What if something happened to her! Painted Moose As pristine as ever, barely caught sight of something shifting closer to her. She curiously raised her head, ears swiveling up, and out. The petite female gave a ghost of a smile. And here she thought she might be able to lead him on for a while. Oh well, better luck next- A loud, shrill sound tore out of Añuli’s lungs as she scrambled away, staring at the ferocious lioness who stood where she had once been. Too fast, too fast! She shivered, frozen with fear until a split second before the lioness pounced again, dodging, but not fast enough. Another howl wrench through the air as the lioness’ claws dug into her backside, dragging her down. moineau bavarde Ekwueme jerked sideways as Añuli's scream ripped through him like a physical blow. She was in trouble! He twisted and scrambled back the way he had come. Faster, faster, he had to get back – You’re fault. If anything happens, your fault.Shut up!Stretched low to the ground, headed straight through shrubs, he ran to the place Añuli’s call had come from – so close, so far – and burst in to find – A lion. s**t. s**t.His mind froze, but his body did not, and carried him on like a battering ram.

Añuli couldn't move fast enough. She couldn't prevent the lioness from tearing up her flesh, and she couldn't help making the wounds worse as she struggled.
The offending lioness was just about to deliver the killing blow when Añuli heard her howl out. It was like a wave of pressure was lifted from her, and with a lightened state of mind, she turned around to see none other than Ekwueme. What could he be doing here? He was going to get himself killed!

Ekwueme tumbled with the lioness, frightened and angry and slightly stunned by a blow to the head. He snapped at the lioness, trying to get his bite her - somewhere, anywhere! It didn't even occur to him to try biting at her neck or some place tender, so was it any surprise that he clamped down on her foreleg? The lioness howled in pain and rage, but Ekwueme's only thought was for Añuli - she had to get out of here! He wouldn't, couldn't let her die. Not like this, not ever.

Not only was she aggrivated by the males tactics, but now her leg was wounded. Añuli could tell that the angrier this lioness became, the more aggressive she would become in her defense. But what could she do? If she didn't do something-
Trying to stand, she felt flesh slide against flesh and she was forced to cry out once again. Her body wouldn't stop shivering. She needed to help him! They needed to get out. Stealing her resolve, the small female maneuvered herself into a better position, took a shaky breath and launched herself at the lioness. Her teeth sunk into the cat's ear.

With a sinking heart, Ekwueme realized that Añuli had joined the fight. He would have yelled at her to run, just go, but that required letting go of the lioness' leg. Growling, he clamped down, wishing he had the jaw strength of a hyena and could break the bone.
The lioness screamed in rage and gave her head a quick shake to try and dislodge the small white dog. What she wanted to do was to bite the black dog - but how to do that with such a big weight pulling back on her head? She tried to swat the black one, but while her blow connected, she lost her balance and stumbled sideways.

She couldn't see what was going on because Añuli wouldn't dare open her eyes. Her ghostly paws pressed against the beasts head and throat, scraping the flesh with tender claws. Then it felt like the world was falling. She felt her body connect with the earth, a horrible feeling at that, and the motion caused her to lose her grip. Añuli felt her body roll away from the lioness, but not before she registered two things. One was that the other female was bellowing in a mixture of rage and pain, and the other was that the cat's ear was in her maw.

With a gasp, Ekwueme let go of the lioness' paw and tumbled to the side. He staggered to his feet, vision slightly unfocused. But he could see Añuli, a blur of white on the other side of the lioness. And dimly he could hear the lioness screaming. "Añuli!" he screamed, his own voice sounding oddly distant to his own ears. " Run." The lioness staggered back to her feet, but the leg that Ekwueme had bitten was a torn, bleeding mess. Ekwueme doubted that they could beat her, even the two of them, but maybe they could outrun her.

Añuli didn't waste any time at all. Once she was sure of his plan, she bolted for the trees. Although, she wouldn't be going far. Her usual graceful steps had been tampered due to her wounds, and she was forced into a blind stumble. She wasn't even sure which way she was going, but she knew she was moving. The pain told her that. And that was good enough for now. "Ekwueme?" She called out, searching around in a mad panic. The move she moved, the more blood covered her pelt. In normal circumstances she would have been able to find him, but now...

Ekwueme didn't waste any time bailing out. His head still rang and there was blood matted in his fur, but none of that mattered right now. His nostrils were thick with the smell of blood, but long experience had taught him to use other signs - a snapped branch, a track on the ground, spots of blood... His heart ached as he caught up to Añuli, noting the blood on her fur, but he didn't have time for more than a few quick licks. "We need to keep moving," he said gruffly. He lined up next to her so that she could lean on him and started to walk.

Instant gratification washed over her as soon as she saw him. Even the sharp sensations of his tongue on her wound wasn't enough to take away her relief. They weren't out of the woods yet, but with him just being there...it was enough to take the edge off. With jagged breaths, she leaned up against Ekwueme and started to walk. "Water," she murmured. "She can't get us there."

Ekwueme nodded, not wanting to waste his breath on words, and angled his steps for the nearest stream. Very briefly he was glad that Añuli was so very good at getting away from him - it gave the two of them a chance to escape. But this could not continue. Añuli was bleeding, she was hurt and it was all his fault! He was only one dog; he couldn't look after her on his own. Privately he decided that he would find a pack that would accept them, no matter how miserable it would make him. The only thing that mattered was keeping Añuli safe.

Añuli wasn't sure when they reached the waters edge, but when they did she didn't hesitate to wade through it. The stream was shallow and smooth, thankfully giving her a break by washing cool water over her paws. She had enough reserves to get her across the water, but once on the other side she collapsed into the closest patch of shrubbery. While she was no where near calm or exhausted enough to sleep, she knew she wouldn't be walking for a little while.

Ekwueme wanted nothing more than to keep going until they found a pack and safety, but he knew that was impossible. If they couldn't run, then at least they could hide. For what good it was worth, he pulled and adjusted the branches of the shrub so that Añuli's prone form wasn't visible before crawling inside. His legs trembled as the adrenaline wore off and he curled around Añuli, the scent of her blood filling his nose. You failed.Shut up. I know.He tenderly licked her wounds. He'd fix this somehow, he wouldn't fail her again.
