Nkera had heard war was brewing in this dry corner of the world but that didn’t stop him from joining one of the Firekin outposts where small groups of rogues often gathered as they waited for a chance to duel one of the desert giants. From what he’d heard, this pride was exactly what his weary mind needed after the draining journey the green-eyed lion had been forced to undertake when a plague had struck the Aali’makabila, his former home.
Thanks to the God blood of the father he’d never met, Nkera was a big lion. His colors seemed acceptable to the mostly red lions and he believed himself to be a strong warrior, even if not very agile. He was still a very young adult fresh out of his former pride’s training grounds who barely had time to adjust to his rank before his world had been turned upside down. He hoped his size and the experienced gained in the rogue lands would – with a bit of luck, he supposed – help him pass this first obstacle towards his goal.
As he spotted a Firekin that seemed strangely familiar for some reason, Nkera let out a challenging roar to indicate he was ready for an official duel.

War was coming.
There had been little sign of the Nergui in the Firekin desert since he'd arrived, but Mkazo knew they would return. To strike, to do that much damage, then disappear? It didn't make any gods-damned sense. You just didn't provoke a pride of ******** warriors for shits and giggles. No, they would be back, and he was going to keep himself trained and ready. If a few lions proved worthy in the process, well...every good fighter would be needed.
And so he strode across the sand, pausing to roar his response to the challenger. Once he caught sight of him...a fierce grin spread across Mkazo's face. If Nkera was anywhere near as unused to the sand as he had been, this would be amusing and then some. "Should have known more than one ex-ushujaa would be spoiling for a fight around here. You ready or not?"

(2,2,1,3,1=9)
Nkera’s ears perked up when he heard the familiar term, a word so unexpected in this context that the pale lion froze in his tracks, eyes widening when he recognized the dark lion. One could almost hear the “oh, I know you!” that now echoed inside his head. It was if Fate itself had decided to show Nkera that he’d made the right decision in joining this pride.
“I am ready.” He said at last, mirroring the other lion’s grin as his expression turned from shock to delight. It was obvious Nkera was glad to see another Ushujaa… ex-ushujaa as a friendly opponent again. If all went well - and Nkera believed that if not this this time eventually it would – he’d have a familiar face fighting by his side soon enough. “Don’t go easy on me now.”
His grin widened as Nkera lowered his head and started circling the dark lion. He seriously doubted being from the same pride would make the lion go easy on him.

(1, 3, 2, 1, 3 = 10)"Surprised?" Mkazo barked a laugh, the sound resolving itself into a smirk. The look of shock on his former pridemate's face had been absolutely priceless. "Don't be. I've kin here." At least, that's what he'd been told, and he hadn't yet made time to verify it with...well, anyone who might have a clue about his lineage. Then he shook his head, the smirk widening. "I don't go easy on anyone." The best a duelist, Firekin or rogue, could expect would be a lack of claws. Considering the force that the black lion could put into his blows, this was a dubious blessing.
Without warning, he charged--and overshot his goal entirely. Only a swift slam of the paw he'd meant to strike with stopped him from stumbling, and he growled a curse under his breath.

The feeling of having sand between his toes as he flexed his claws was strange to Nkera and he slowly realized his movements had not yet adjusted to the unstable surface. Now that his heart started beating faster, the insufferable heat was also something he was having trouble dealing with but at least in that regard his mostly white color was doing a relatively good job at protecting the young lion. He still felt the urge to scratch the odd places where the sun or sand pierced through his coat but he remained in place as the dark lion missed his first attack. Nkera could tell he was as fast as he was strong. He did not want to get hit by one of those blows so he waited to see how the lion would recover, hoping to see an opening that he could take advantage of.

There was still a bit of fumbling to keep his footing in the sand, but Mkazo had been forcing himself to adapt to the stuff through duels and training. As such, it wasn't long before he spun on his heels, whirling to charge at a Nkera who...hadn't seemed to move much. His eyes narrowed--was the other lion sun-addled? The dark-coated lion snorted. His mistake, then. As he approached, he raised a heavy paw and swung.

The dark lion recovered surprisingly quickly and Nkera was completely unprepared for the attack that followed. He was too slow in his reactions and received the heavy blow on the side of his head which left him feeling slightly disoriented. Without waiting for the numbing sensation to disappear, the pale lion pushed forward to return the hit but one of his paws slipped, causing him to change the direction midblow. Even if it did hit, Nkera was certain his attack would be too weak to cause any damage.

Mkazo smirked as his blow disoriented the other lion, enough to cause his return strike to glance off of his shoulder. Rather than stick around to invite a more solid retribution, he retreated a length or so, pacing a circle around Nkera. His eyes were calculating, his gaze intense, all to watch for for--to wait for--an opening. His tail lashed behind him slowly as he did so--he had never been the most patient of lions, and he was a fighter, not a thinker. As soon as there was the least bit of vulnerability, he would charge.

When the dark lion jumped back, Nkera did the same. He flexed his claws slowly, stroking the sand beneath his paws as if asking it to support his weight. Like Mkazo, the pale lion wasn’t much of a thinker when it came to fighting but he wasn’t a reckless fool either – that trait had been thoroughly trained out of him. Still, he was a lion of actions more so than words and the moment his eyes caught his opponent mid-step he reacted quickly and threw himself at him, his shoulders readying for the potential collision as he aimed to unbalance the dark lion and set the stage a stronger attack that he hoped could decide the match.

Mkazo should have seen it coming. Nkera wasn't the first one to have thought of using a bodycheck in battle, nor would he be the last. But when he did so, he did it at the right time to catch Mkazo mid-charge, sending him careening to the side. The dark lion tried to take a swipe as he was knocked back, but struck only empty air. A hissed curse escaped him as he fought to regain his balance. Damn clever move, that, and damn fool move on his own part--having seen it too late to alter his direction, he felt he should have dodged in time anyways.

Nkera felt a surge of satisfaction when things seemed to be finally going his way. He had laid the perfect stage for the next attack and he lifted his paw to strike, already imagining himself within the Firekin borders. And he missed. Honestly, he couldn’t even blame the sand this time. His over-eagerness had caused him to fail in measuring the distance between himself and his opponent and his impulsive attack did not connect with the dark lion’s head. He growled under his breath, frustrated by his failure. It would’ve been such a perfect hit…
