The sun was sinking below the mountains on the horizon sending long shadows to claw their way across the ground of the forest. The shrill sounds of summer bugs filled the air and most sensible creatures lay resting in the shade of the trees. The peace of the evening was not to last as the shrieks of startled birds sent the woods into motion. The cause of the sudden commotion was a pale kalona mare that had set her sights on a young doe that had strayed too far from protection. The doe had fled with the mare in close pursuit. She kept her wings folded close to her sides to keep them from snagging on tree branches. It was a trick she had learned after tearing a hole in the membrane of one of her wings as a child. She had earned several more tears since then for other errors during hunts or fights and each one served as a reminder of what not to do. Now she moved with practiced grace and less than thirty seconds into the chase she was upon the doe.
In one swift, easy movement the mare sprang forward and seized the doe by the hind leg before digging her hind legs to bring them to a stop. She twisted to one side to evade a blow from the does other hind leg before tugging her backwards and giving her a vicious shake. The deer was just a bit more than half her size but it was still putting up a fight. For several minutes she struggled with it until it had weakened enough to strike a death blow. Once the doe had stilled she straightened up breathing heavily. There were easier meals but would eat well tonight.

A young colt lay resting beneath a pine tree on a bed of dried needles. It was not the most comfortable bed but it had been a good place to rest during the hottest hours of the day. Now that the shadows were growing long he decided that it was time to get up. With a small yawn he rolled over and got to his feet. He shook himself free of the needles that clung to his coat before stretching out. A rumbling of his stomach alerted him to a growing need for food and with a flick of his tail he set off to locate a meal.
The ruckus from a terrified flock of birds caught his attention. His eyes drifted to the sky before the young kalona decided to move in the opposite direction. The things that scared birds often meant a meal source was nearby, at least for a predator. What he found was a mare taking down a pray better suited for couples or small groups. Interested he watched from the shadows until she had killed the beast then he stepped forward.
"Would it not make more sense to catch something smaller?" He asked casually to announce his presence. "A deer is a bit much for just you."

Yseult snarled at the faceless voice behind her. It sounded young and that was, perhaps, the only reason that she had not yet launched an attack. She turned slowly to glare at whoever was behind her and found herself blinking in surprise. A foal? A foal had managed to sneak up on her? She would be impressed if she wasn't so annoyed. She wasn't sure what to make of his tone, he sounded a little too confident for a kid approaching a clear threat.
"Do you think it's wise to interrupt a hunter when she's eating?" She asked impatiently. She hadn't yet started but that wasn't the point. Yseult did not have to deal with this child even if he was kalona kin or at least some strange sub-breed judging by his wings. She didn't have to but for the moment she would. "Something smaller wouldn't be a challenge. I like a challenge. Now go away. I want to eat in peace."

"I never said I was wise." The foal retorted making his way closer to the deer carcass. His stomach rumbled quietly as he took in the scent of blood. This would be more than enough of a meal for the both of them, he only had to convince the mare that he was worth sharing food with. He looked the mare over carefully to determine his angle. She was tall, larger than his mother but smaller than his father, with a sinewy build. She had tatters along the edges of her wings and was decorated in silver, blue and black ornaments. She was used to a tough life and it wasn't just that, she had said it herself, she liked a challenge.
Zelcion smiled and paced away from the kill. With a quick look around the area he found his angle.
"If you like a challenge then will you accept one from me?" He asked calmly circling around the area as he spoke. "I may be a child but there isn't a single kalona out there that is better than me at getting into the tree tops." He said proudly as he curled his spaded tail around his hind leg. "If you can get into the uppermost branches of a tree, any tree, before I do than I will leave you in peace. But if I win I get some of your doe, I'm a child I won't eat much." He came to a stop on the other side of the area and gave his little wings a wiggle as though warming them up. "Will you accept the challenge or are you worried that I might actually defeat you?"

Yseult stared in amazement as the kid walked around issuing her a challenge. Him, with his under developed wings. He was a scrawny underfed brat that had likely only just been weaned. She got the feeling that if she gave him some of her kill he would just throw it right back up and it would be useless to all but crows. Still what he said burned her. He was calling her a coward? Her? A proud kalona of the purest blood? She was mountain reared and bred to excel and this brat thought he could beat her? Not on her watch.
"You'll have your little contest kid." She snarled. "But know that you are about to eat your words. I will go first, you may count for me and make sure you are watching close." She spread her wings and picked her target, a tree top off to one side of a clear space, it was taller but easier to get to in flight. Then, with a deep breath, she beat her wings as hard as she could and took off straight to the tree. She counted along in her head stopping once she landed in the prickly branches snapping it under her weight. She took off after barely a second had passed to glide back down to the ground and walk to the child. Twenty-one was her count and for the unusual conditions of the area, tight spaces without room for takeoff, she found this to be a pleasing count. There was no way that the child could beat her. If his wings could support him at all they wouldn't push him as high and unless he was secretly a squirrel there was no way his hooves would find a grip.
"Alright kid, it's your turn now and once you have humiliated yourself you can run home to your mommy."

Zelcion had to fight back his grin as the mare took the bait just like he knew she would. He nodded his head in agreement to count and then watched as she took off. He counted out loud making sure each number was evenly paced. She made it after only twenty-one counts. It was impressive and if he had planned to be completely fair she would have won. However, the point of this contest wasn't fairness it was getting food and for that he needed a guaranteed win.
"It's true, you're very good." He said with a gracious bow of his head. "I'm still better, please count." As the mare had done he stretched out his wings and beat them a few times before nodding to the mare to begin the count. When she did he took to large steps backward and announced, "I'm at the top now." It was no lie. He had selected a fallen tree to stand near before announcing the contest. The mare had been so eager to prove her skill that clearly she had missed the easy target just like Zelcion knew she would. "I did say any tree." He said casually. "I believe this makes me the winner. I'll have some of that deer now."

If Yseult hadn't felt so furious she might have been amused by the entire situation. Surely if someone else had been tricked by a foal in such a way she would have found it hilarious. This, however, was a blow to her pride. She had just been outsmarted by a whelp that was probably less than half of her age. As it was she growled fiercely at him baring her teeth as she advanced.
"I should tear you to shreds for this." She snarled lashing her tail out behind her. There were only a few things keeping her from attacking the foal then and there. First, while the contest had not necessarily been fair he had indeed said any tree and she hadn't put any limits on that. He had gotten into the tree tops faster than her even if that tree was on the ground. Second, he was a child of kalona decent and he looked pure enough. There wasn't enough pure blood going around to justify slaughtering a child just for a little trick. She looked hard at him, she couldn't kill him but she wasn't about to let him get away with it. Two could play at his game.
"I should, but I won't. I'll go get your reward." With a purposeful stride she marched over to the deer and bit off one of it's ears. Then she returned and dropped the ear in front of the colt. "There you go, that's some of my doe. You can eat that." He had brought this on himself.

Zelcion took a half step backwards as the mare rounded on him. He had been certain that she would be too proud to go back on her word but it was beginning to look like he was wrong. When she stopped he glanced around and then grinned. She had finally accepted her defeat and he was going to be fed. He looked on eagerly as she returned to the deer carcass to fetch him some food. His stomach growled in anticipation and he licked his lips.
When she returned he wrinkled his brow in confusion. She had nothing with her. He was about to ask where the food was when she dropped something on the ground before him. Zelcion looked down at it and a cold fury filled him. It was an ear. She had given him a piece that was practically inedible. "How dare you!" He shouted indignantly kicking the ear away. "You cannot treat me like this! Do you have any idea who I am?" He glared at her as he had often seen his mother do. If he had been with his parents right now this mare would be either dead or marked for some form of torture. No one would treat a son of Xelloss like this. They lived under the protection and rule of the great Lord Beastmaster. They were above even normal kalona kind. Far above. They weren't just kalona but also mazoku and important ones.

Yseult snorted. Clearly the child had been spoiled. If she had ever acted as though the world owed her something she would have found herself in heavy training until she shut up. Evidently the boy's parents didn't believe in taking such measures or else they agreed with him. She shook her head and returned to her kill. If she had been anything but a kalona she might have found sense in his words but as it was he sounded completely ridiculous.
"Obviously I don't know since you never bothered to tell me." She muttered disinterested as she looked over the deer. Where did she want to start? Part of the skin had already been torn off the leg but she preferred the taste of the chest meat. After a short debate she went for the leg, she could have the better part later.

Zelcion could scarcely believe his eyes. This mare had the gall to ignore him. His eyes narrowed and his lips began to twitch upward in a scowl as he watched her take a chunk out of the doe's leg. He didn't think for a second that he could be a match for this mare in a contest of strength but he had outwitted her once already he was confident in his abilities to do it once again.
"I am Zelcion." He spoke slowly as he approached the mare forcing his voice into calmness despite the fury he felt. "Son of Xelloss and Othelia. Grandson of the Lord Beastmaster. I will not be spoken to or treated in such a manner you harlot." He spat the word at her as he came to a stop just out of striking distance behind the mare. He wasn't fool enough to give her such an easy shot after insulting her and she would attack, of that he was certain.

Spoiled. The child had been very, very spoiled. Yseult swallowed her mouthful of venison before turning to look at the colt. She did her best to keep her temper from getting out of control but she was fighting a losing battle. He had called her a harlot? Where did a child even begin to learn words like that? She took in a deep breath in a last ditch effort to calm herself to no avail.
Pride for a kalona was completely normal. It was only fact that kalona were the best of all the breeds. His fault was that he seemed to think himself purer than her as though his lineage of lords was better than her's of warriors. Yseult was going to make him rethink that. "You're going to wish you never said that, runt." She snarled before charging at him with her head down. She was going to skewer him, then maybe he wouldn't be so chatty.

In retrospect Zelcion found that this had been a terrible idea, the mare was faster than he had anticipated, but it was too late to change things now. Very much like a rabbit on the run from a hound Zelcion turned and raced into the thick of the trees. She was fast but she was also large and not as nimble as he was. Her large wings, even tucked in at her sides, would make her movements around the trees even more awkward. This Zelcion counted on as he led the way.
Once they were far enough in he began to weave his way around trees easily slipping through narrow passages. He would keep this up until she got stuck somewhere or until she was too tired to put up a fight. Then he would make his move, fetch some of her kill and be done with her. It was a perfect plan. He could run around like this all night.

Yseult followed the foal blindly still trying to stab him with her horns. It wasn't until the child had dodged the first tree that she realized where she had been led. She turned sharply to follow the colt but still hit the tree leaving an angry red mark on her flank. She wanted to kill him now more than ever but part of her had to admire how quickly he'd turned her size into a disadvantage. He'd make one hell of an opponent when he got older. If he lived that long.
Yseult made it a point to pay more attention to her surroundings so that she didn't knock into anymore trees. Trees were, after all, unyielding opponents. The kid didn't seem to be taking the same sort of precautions that she did. Why should he? He danced around the trees like they were the ones in motion and not him. He slipped through progressively smaller gaps that Yseult had to navigate around. At first the gap between them had been small but it had grown until finally Yseult seemed to have lost him entirely as he passed through a narrow, circular cluster of trees. The silvery mare had gone around to the other side but he didn't appear. She took in a good whiff of the air and caught the kids scent. He had been standing there at some point recently but where had he gone? Yseult circled the cluster looking for signs of him but still found nothing.
"A spirit?" She asked herself wrinkling her nose. Was he some phantom horse just out to trick others? It seemed like such a ridiculous thought and yet it somehow made sense.

His plan seemed to be working, the trees slowed the mare down and once he found out how narrow of a gap she could fit through he worked more and more of them into their route. That was the bonus of being chased, you got to pick the course, you were almost in complete control of what obstacles were laid out. It was only an almost because a person had to pick and choose from what was available. Conveniently luck was with Zelcion and what he found to be available was a perfect vanishing point. Right before him lay a circle of trees pressed close together. It was a bit of a squeeze but he ran into the circle and waited.
Once Yseult had passed by him he ran out the same way he had come in and took off down a winding route that would hide him and bring him back to the clearing. All the way there Zelcion kept glancing over his shoulder to make certain that he hadn't been spotted. Once he burst out of the trees near the fallen doe he felt he could breathe easy. Feeling proud he marched over to the doe and went to work on the leg where the mare had started. Once he had swallowed a few mouthfuls he set to work tearing off a large chunk to eat at his leisure.
