The young foal walked slowly, eyeing the trees that towered above his frail form. He knew his sister was out there somewhere and drifting away from her probably wasn’t the best choice. He would always track her down later and honestly he wasn’t afraid at all. He liked wandering off on his own because Adalyn liked to do her own thing, which never included him anyway. What irritated him the most was that he couldn’t remember his parents. He couldn’t even remember their faces or how their voices sounded. The only thing he could remember was running as fast as he could. He knew that day scared him to the point where it probably would never be repaired, but he didn’t mind it.

He knew his foal years were done and the turn of events pretty much forced him to grow up more then he probably should have at his age. He didn’t want to, but he had to for his sister and himself. As his pupiless eyes stared blankly ahead of him, he gave a faint sigh as the breeze swept by. He could feel the spirits around him ensuring him that everything was going to be all right. In a way he probably should be scared of them and run, but he wasn’t. He felt like he was one of them. He felt like they were there to protect him and he was there to help them. He could feel it in his body.

He came to a stop at a darkened path and looked down it, peering into the distance. He was like a ghost. All that could be seen was his brilliant white color illuminating in the dark and creating an eerie glow to his form, which would scare most others away. He then spoke.

“Spirits…watch over me.”

Everything went silent again and Hania Shen was alone. The spirits disappeared and he soon made his way down the dark path.

A young, brightly colored foal pranced along, not really caring where he was or where he was going. His father was probably worried sick, wondering why Akino hadn't returned home and the day was already beginning to end. There was still a little bit of sunlight out, just enough for Akino to find his way home safe and sound. With his chest puffed out, head held high and shoulders pushed back, Akino smiled at what he assumed he looked like. Man did he think he was the s**t. No, no he didn't just think he was the s**t, he knew it with all his being! Nobody could tell him otherwise, especially not his brothers.

It was this attitude that he adopted from his mother. The attitude that he could take on anything and be whatever he wanted to be. What the colt hadn't realized was that he was slowly traveling into dangerous territory. His parents had warned him to keep away from the forests, especially near nightfall. Skinwalkers, kalonas, etc... Ha! Akino wasn't afraid of them. They would be crushed under his almost black hoof. He tossed his head back as he laughed at the imaginary kalona that stood in his path. "Step aside, or I might just rip you to shreds," The young colt said as he snapped at the air, his dull teeth making a pathetic clicking sound as they met. Soon, Akino was prancing along once again, stretching out his legs in order to give his prance an elegant look. Soon, mares would be dropping at the sight of his devilishly good looks... or so he thought.

The colt was shaken out of his day dreams when he heard the voice of another creature. His ears swiveled as he flared out his small feathered wings, giving himself a bigger look, which didn't do much for him. He cleared his throat before he noticed a glowing colt. Wait... a glowing... colt? Akino's ears quickly swiveled forward as he watched the colt speaking to no one. Watch over him? Pfft! There was no one there to watch over him. The purple and orange colt's silver eyes looked up to the trees. Nothing but a bunch of birds. Ha! Birds couldn't do anything to help this colt. "Hey! Don't you know its dangerous to go down that path?" I mean, Akino could go down the path with no problem, but he was special... he was Akino!

The white colt paused and turned his head to the side seeing the other brightly colored colt behind him. He didn’t think it was too dangerous down the path. The dark wasn’t something to really be afraid of compared to most things in the Kawani lands. He felt more at home in the darkness then in the light and the forest was the only real warmth he felt. He didn’t have much emotion as it was and relied on those two things to keep him sane.

“The darkness does not scare me nor does danger. If there was danger down this path the spirits would have told me so.”

He told the other foal with a firm nod of his head before twisting away from him and walking down the path once more.

Hania was a very strange foal and most would say he was a little mature for his age or just down right eerie. He didn’t play or pretend or even trick others. He was honest, serious and a thinker. He didn’t do anything without a reason for doing it.

“What brings you out here? Also…what is your name? Mine is Hania Shen.”

He said softly as he stopped and looked back to the brightly colored colt again.

Although most might think the other colt was more mature or eerie, Akino simply thought he was crazy and weird. What was wrong with him? Spirits would tell him if there was danger?! The brightly colored colt stifled a smile that was attempting to tug at the corners of his mouth. That and he fought back a laugh. No, no he could laugh later, for now he wanted to know how hard this colt was dropped on his head while in the basket. "Soooo... you speak to spirits?" The smile tried to creep on his maw once more, but he fought back.

Wait! The darkness didn't scare this foal? Then it didn't scare Akino either. He puffed out his chest once more as he tossed his head high towards the tree tops. "I'm not afraid of anything. Not one thing at all." He may have exaggerated a bit... or a lot, either way he didn't want this stranger knowing his fears... His fears were his worst enemy... mud.

Shaking his head from the thought, he gave the colt a look as though he were surprised the colt would even ask such a question. What brought him out to this dark, treacherous looking place. Oh a rainbow that he thought had a pot of gold at the end of it! Akino shook his head before shrugging his shoulders at the colt, his feathered wings moving up and down as well.

"I was just wandering. I'm assuming you were doing the same? Ah, my name. It's Akino!" His head once again tossed back as he tried to let a charming smile appear on his face, which turned out to be more cute than charming.

Hania’s ears raised up a little bit from the question. He knew the other probably thought him to be crazy or weird for speaking with the spirits that inhabited the forest, but he didn’t care. He was what he was and there was no changing it at all. He couldn’t go back and erase what he turned out to be. He stopped walking again for a moment and turned to look at Akino with a vacant expression. There was no smile, no frown, no nothing. Just a straight-laced face.

“Yes I speak to the dead and it’s good that you’re not afraid of anything. Nothing should frighten anyone. Fear is something that can be used against you and you don’t want that.”

He spoke lightly with his voice almost fading into the cool night air. He use to be afraid, but not anymore. After the events at the carnival, how could he be afraid of something? His family was attacked and now all he had was his sister. He didn’t know if his mother or father even made it out alive. He only hoped they did. He wanted so badly to meet up with them again.

“I’m looking for my twin sister actually…we got separated, but I’m not set on finding her. The spirits will lead us to one another eventually. It’s nice to meet you Akino. If you don’t mind accompanying me I never had someone do that before.”

He nodded to the other colt as he kept a pace similar to the other foal. He remained at his side as he walked never stepping ahead of him.

What was this other colt also a mind reader?! Akino stared at the straight faced colt with a confused stare of his own. His expression caused the brightly colored colt to shift uncomfortably. This kid only got weirder by the moment. Who knew what would happen by the time they got to the safety of Akino's parents. His silver tail swished at some mosquitoes that DARED try to bite him. A soft, grumpy snort escaped from the colt before he focused back on the colt once more before he spoke. "Uh... yeah. So you could speak to my great grandparents? They are dead... and I guess they would be spirits." A quirky little grin formed on his face as he listened to the glowing colt.

So the other colt had a twin? Oh man, he couldn't help but wonder how weird she must've been, as though girls weren't already weird enough already. He shook his head up and down as he eyed the other colt, noticing his strange looking tail... what the?! Man this kid had surprises all over the place! He glowed, he had a weird tail, and he could see spirits. Those were already three strikes against him. Any foal in their right mind would turn and run, sadly, Akino had to prove that he feared nothing and no one. "I'm sure she is with your parents..." It hadn't occurred to Akino that perhaps this colt didn't have parents. And again, the other colt started speaking about the spirits, it was starting to make the hairs on the back of Akino's neck stand up ever so slightly. "Of course, I'll accompany you! Just in case you need help fighting off any creatures of the night." The colt smirked as though her were big and bad. Yeah, keep thinking that Akino...

“Yes I could if you really wanted me to. I can see most other Soq using me for that reason. To connect with those long gone or to say one last thing that was left unspoken for years. Did you know your grandparents or are you only wanting to do this because you think I’m crazy?”

He got it. He knew he wasn’t normal and he knew he was nothing like this colt walking beside him. He didn’t think the same things or do the same things.

He told the other foal feeling a little saddened by that fact, but it didn’t show. He knew he would be used for his ability to speak with those long gone and he might even have trouble retaining friends because of that. He curled his tail up a little bit to show that he was a little irritated, but it quickly went back to the same position it was before.

“I don’t have parents anymore. We were attacked during the Blood Moon festival at the carnival. I haven’t seen them since and can only hope they made it out okay.”

He didn’t know how else to explain that he didn’t have parents without being honest about it. He didn’t exactly miss his parents too much. He only wished he knew if they were all right or not and that was eating the poor foal up inside. If he didn’t have Adalyn he didn’t know what he would do. She was the only thing keeping him attached to the world of the living for the time being even though his spiritual sense was very strong.

“Creatures of the night? What kind of creatures would they be?”

He asked tilting his head as he looked over to Akino completely confused. He never heard of these creatures before, but it seemed interesting.
