[Created character: Carltis, Weyrbrat]
Some people go through life taking it as it comes, accepting things they cannot change and finding peace within themselves.
Carltis was not one of these people.
He hadn't gone to see the demonstration, because he had no interested in gawking at something that could replace dragons. Dragons. He would have his own one day, and it would have to be a silver of course because he was meant to be somebody but he knew no bronze or brown would take him. That still left the problem of how to make himself weyrleader but... well maybe if he didn't let himself think about it a bronze would have him after all. He wanted a bronze. He deserved a bronze.
He had been happily(!) brooding over these and other matters while hefting supplied around down in the lower caverns when the commotion began. To start with he had liked the sound of it, equality of colours had been brought up, but then it had been made clear that riders were to lose their position in this brave new world of the handlers, and his immediate reaction had been 'shaff that s**t'.
He had punched somebody, and everything had got very messy, and now he was leaning against a wall somewhere near the candidate barracks to get his breath back. As breath came easier he considered that maybe it wasn't such a bad thing that riders wouldn't be considered special, and shards he could Impress a green or blue or something and still be able to earn any post he worked for!
These considerations however were outweighed by the fact that one of the people he'd run into fighting for the revolution was a smug b*****d he really really hated, and the fact that said smug b*****d had broken his nose. Calrtis wiped blood away from his face with his sleeve and pushed off the wall.
Shaff the revolution, he didn't need their bullshit regime change to make something of himself!
Time to find somebody else to hit.

[Created character: Aleck, Weyrbrat]
He'd gone to see the demonstration. Of course he'd gone to see the demonstration, he and his father both, because however all the pomp and bluster the Ancientcrafter spouted (and he seemed to have an endless supply) couldn't smother the possibility of interesting old technology Aleck had only dreamed of. He'd been vaguely aware of the surrounding murmurs but hadn't paid them too much attention. Not because he didn't care - his father rode green, he did - but because if anything was going to happen, it would happen. In any case, the fall of Weyrs sounded like the sort of claims surrounding any 'revolutionary new innovation' shortly before it turned out everyone had been pinning their hopes on a very small board. Progress was gradual. And often unpredictable.
He certainly hadn't predicted a revolution.
It had all been very interesting (and as he'd suspected, only functional on a small scale yet) but then something.. went wrong. Amidst the confusion and panic they'd betweened to Malvren, Berath bellowing in rage as they returned to protect their home.
And then he'd been bustled in a back way to a storage room near the candidate barracks and told in no uncertain terms to stay put, with additional emphasis from the massive green who remained outside. Aleck hadn't objected to this, because the plea from both rider and dragon had been so strong. Please, please. Stay safe.
He'd hunkered down under a shelf of bedlinens, long limbs sticking every which way, and polished his glasses on the tail of his shirt while he waited, and thought, and thought.
His father would be going deeper in, his main focus the infirmary and his patients there.
He was alone and unarmed, unless he could lecture the revolutionaries to death.
Whers could fit in the tunnels.
Whers didn't listen to lectures.
And he could hear doors being opened in a systematically violent way.
Aleck unfolded to his full height and stood up. He wasn't a violent person, but he was rather attached to his life. Losing it would make reading interesting new scrolls difficult. His small experience with fighting consisted on being on the receiving end of it, and in any case this particular storeroom lacked blunt or edged instruments of any sort.
Voices too, getting closer now. He pulled a thick blanket from a shelf and shook it out as quietly as he could. One, two..
When the door opened he threw it, shoved past the surprised person, and ran. A muffled shout followed him down the corridor but he didn't pay attention to it; he was focusing on getting away. To only became a problem when he noticed the figure pushing off the wall ahead.
"Shaff-!"

[Carltis]
Somebody behind him down the hall shouted, and Carltis spun around with his fists raised. Running feet, coming closer, and then-!
It was Aleck.
There had been a time when the blue-eyed boy had been much smaller than he, but he realised absently that they were about the same height now. He had, on occasion, shoved Aleck over or stolen his books when they'd been very small because... well mainly just because he was an arsehole; there were other reasons too but he hardly had time to analyze them just now.
Carltis did not immediately punch the bespectacled young man in the face, but his fists remained raised and he showed his teeth in a snarl. "Whose side are you on then?" he snapped, wiping more blood away from his face and advancing on the other weyrbrat. "You with them, with the bloody revolutionaries?" He certainly wouldn't be shocked, what with them having that ancientcrafter guy and all; Aleck was fixated with that stuff. Maybe he'd been working for them all along.
The sound of running feet was getting closer.
For better or worse, it seemed like they were about to get more company.

[Aleck]
Reasonably quick reflexes and a skid that took the bottom layer of wherhide off his boots saved Aleck from an unpleasant collision with an unpleasant expression he recognized. Carltis! Not 'thank Faranth, Carltis' but just 'Carltis,' and the bespectacled blond fell back into the 'startled intellectual' defensive stance, old memories of getting his face ground in the dirt stepping him back.
"What? No!" was his automatic response. He hadn't thought about choosing a side; when it came to conflict he checked the box marked 'off that way a bit.' "I'm just looking for my dad!" His gaze darted sideways at an angry shout from behind. "Shaff- can we talk about this later? Now's not a good time."

[Carltis: Initiative Roll]
The speed and tone of the response made him think that it was probably true, though there was a bit of emphasis on that 'probably'. "Right, fine." Given Aleck wasn't an enemy at least, sticking with him for now might not be a bad plan. If nothing else the lanky young man was a second target, and if cornered he might even be an extra set of fists. Stranger things had happened, like grids of light that apparently reduced stuff to ash and wherhandlers taking over Benden Weyr.
“I’ll come with you,” Carltis said abruptly, “might as well, there’ll be bastards in need of facial rearrangement all over the place... and I don’t think you’d get all that far by yourself somehow. Let’s move then, around the next corner, and then we can get the jump on whoever’s chasing us, right?” Not waiting for a response the scruffy haired young man took off at a run in the direction Aleck had been heading before.

[Aleck: Initiative Roll]
Oh good, it had worked. That meant one less-
'I'll come with you.'
Wait. What?
Aleck blinked, caught off guard by the sudden alliance. To his knowledge (most of it observation from a safe distance) the only alliances Carltis made were creative marriages of expletives and his fists with parts of other people's anatomy. Never one of mutual protection.
So it was probably about using him as a shield.
"Uh, right," he managed, following after. The horrible teenage lankiness he was only just growing out of made it easy to keep up, at least.

[NPCs Anise and Anrin]
"Hey you, come back!" Small, wiry, and quick Anise charged after the flash of movement she had spotted diving around a corner.
Just behind her, taller but similarly built Anrin flexed his hands; he had heard male voices, and if two boys thought they were going to hurt his big sister they had another thing coming!

[Aleck: Grapple]
Around the corner, Aleck paused; he recognized that voice, though he couldn't immediately put a name to it - Avise? Ardise? She was a weyrbrat, not a wherhandler. He hadn't bothered to check what side she was on - if any - before he'd thrown a blanket at her; she could well have been looking for revolutionaries. Why they would be hiding in supply rooms was beyond him, but-
"Wait, Alise, hold up-" he began, catching the girl as she rushed around the corner.

Anrin was not an especially complicated young man. When he saw his sister being grabbed by somebody who seemed to be working with somebody who was working with the riders he gave a bellow of rage and charged at Aleck, raising a fist to strike at him.

[Carltis: attacking Anrin]
Carltis was a fairly complex young man in a number of ways, but he was about as complex as 1 + 2 when it came to a fight. In this case 1 was Anrin’s face and 2 were Carltis’ fists. Snarling like an agnry feline, Calrtis rushed at the other weyrbrat as he struck Aleck and made his attempt at mathematical martial arts.
The outcome of the equation was aimed to be -1 to nose shape for Anrin.

[Aleck: Grapple con't.]
Aleck had long arms and he put them to use now, holding on while he stepped back to drag Anise off her kicking feet. Revolutionaries? That hardly made any sen- There was Anrin. Ohfaranth.
The blond took the blow to his face with a 'ngh!' and looked back with what wasn't a glare but was more intense than the usual mellow look in his eyes, glasses askew. "Shard it all, you grew up here! Both of you!" What were they thinking?

[Anise: Trying to break grapple]
“Yes!” Anise squirmed and struggled, her wavy brown hair flopping into her face as she tried to get free. “I grew up here, and I was taught to just wait for my dragon to come and get me. Did that happen? No, it didn’t, and now what am I going to do with my life? They’re giving me a fresh start! They’ll give me a bondmate!” She would rather have a dragon than a wher, but a wher was better than nothing, and a chance to get back at the smug people who had been lucky enough to be chosen by a dragon.
